May is when Akumal's two headline seasons begin: turtle nesting opens on the 1st and whale shark tours start around mid-month. Prices are low, crowds are thin, and the sargassum is ramping up. This guide covers the trade.

What You Should Know

  • May is the month both of Akumal's wildlife seasons open. Turtle nesting begins on May 1 and runs to the end of October, and whale shark tours out of the wider region typically start around mid-May, so a late-May trip catches the opening of both.
  • Prices drop to low season while the weather is still mostly dry, which makes May one of the two best value months of the year alongside the post-Easter window in April.
  • The trade-off is the beach. Sargassum ramps up quickly through May, and this is the month the bay starts doing what it does all summer, which is holding whatever lands in it rather than letting the next swell carry it out.
  • The rains begin. Rainfall roughly doubles from April to about 109mm, mostly as afternoon build-up late in the month, which is the first sign of the pattern that dominates June through October.

Akumal in May: What to Expect

Best May window: the second half, from around the 15th. Whale shark season opens, nesting is underway, and prices are still at low-season levels. Early May is cheaper and drier but misses both wildlife seasons, which are the strongest reasons to be here this month.

May is the pivot month in Akumal, and the first one in which the wildlife rather than the water clarity is the reason to come. Nesting season opens on the 1st, whale shark trips start running around mid-month, and prices have fallen to low-season levels after April's post-Easter drop. What you are accepting in exchange is a beach that is deteriorating week by week and the return of afternoon rain. For travelers who came for turtles and sharks rather than for a lounger, that is a very good deal.

💰 Average May hotel prices (Akumal, mid-range):
Boutique hotels and condos: ~$150/night · Mid-range and villa rentals: ~$180/night · All-inclusive resorts: ~$310/night
Rough mid-range estimates and among the year's lowest. Late May firms slightly as whale shark season opens, and all vary considerably by property, by which bay it sits on, and by lead time.

Who May suits. We'd expect this to work best for travelers who came for wildlife and value rather than for the sand: nesting turtles, the opening of whale shark season, empty cenotes and low-season rates. We'd look elsewhere if a clean beach is central to the trip, because May is where the sargassum genuinely establishes itself, or if you want the year's clearest water, which means January through March.

Our Top Pick

Hidden Cenote Swim: Snorkeling, Sea Turtles & Beachside Lunch

From $119 USD · 4.8 ⭐ (1,376 reviews)

We'd book this if you have one day to get right in May. The cenote half is now doing real work against both the heat and an uncertain beach, and the turtle snorkel benefits from warm water and low-season quiet in the bay. It also carries the largest review base of the combination tours, which is useful in a month when conditions start varying more day to day.

Temperature and Humidity

May highs average around 31°C (88°F) with lows near 24°C (75°F), and the nights have stopped cooling off meaningfully. Humidity climbs to around 79%. This is the month Akumal becomes properly hot rather than warm, and the practical effect is that open-sun activities need to happen in the morning.

Rain Pattern

Rainfall roughly doubles from April to about 109mm across about seven days, and the character changes with it. Early May is often still dry and frontal; late May starts producing the afternoon convective build-up that defines the summer. It rarely writes off a day, but it does start arguing for morning activity and afternoon flexibility.

Hurricane Season Timing

Atlantic hurricane season opens on June 1, so May sits just outside it. Very early-season systems are not unheard of but are rare, and in practice May is the last month of the year where storm disruption is not something to plan around. From June it is.

Sea Conditions

Sea temperature climbs to around 28°C (82°F), warm enough for genuinely long snorkels without any thermal protection. Wind is light, which is comfortable but does mean less mixing, and less mixing is part of why arriving sargassum tends to settle in the bay rather than disperse.

Crowds and Prices in Akumal in May

May is one of the quietest months of the Akumal year, and the crowd picture barely moves across it.

  • May 1 to 14: genuinely quiet. Post-Easter low season is fully established, rates are at their floor, and the bay is uncrowded even mid-morning.
  • May 15 to 24: still quiet on the beach, but whale shark season opening adds demand to the day-trip operators and boat capacity starts tightening.
  • May 25 to 31: quiet, with the first summer-holiday bookings appearing and rates beginning to firm ahead of June.

On price, May is among the cheapest months of the year, running around $180 a night for mid-range lodging, with boutique hotels and condos nearer $150 and all-inclusive resorts around $310. Rates firm slightly through the second half as whale shark season and early summer demand arrive.

Based on what we've seen across the corridor, late May is the best combination of wildlife and value on the Akumal calendar: nesting underway, whale sharks running, low-season pricing, and thin crowds. The beach is the price of admission, and the honest question is whether that matters to your trip. For how the wider corridor prices out this month, see our Riviera Maya in May guide.

Turtle Nesting Season Opens in Akumal in May

May 1 is the start of nesting season, which runs to the end of October. The first females of the year come ashore this month to dig and lay, and the Centro Ecológico Akumal begins its nest patrols and monitoring in earnest. This is the beginning of the six-month window in which Akumal's beaches are an active nesting site rather than just a snorkelling bay.

What you will not see much of in May is hatchlings. Nests laid now take 45 to 60 days to incubate, so the first emergences from May nests arrive in late June and July, and the main hatching window runs from late August into October. May is the laying end of the cycle, not the hatching end.

Three species nest here: green turtles (Chelonia mydas), loggerheads (Caretta caretta), and the rarer hawksbill (Eretmochelys imbricata). Loggerheads tend to appear earlier in the season and green turtle nesting builds from June onwards. Nests are marked and protected, and the practical etiquette from May onwards is to keep well back from markers, use red light only after dark, and never dig or drive on the upper beach.

The daytime snorkel is unaffected by any of this. The green turtles that make Akumal Bay famous are resident foragers on the seagrass beds rather than nesting adults, so the daytime snorkel runs exactly as it does in high summer. Our Akumal snorkeling tour guide covers the operators and entry points. As in every month, guided snorkeling is not run on Mondays, a conservation rest day, though independent snorkelers can enter before 10am that morning.

Sargassum in Akumal in May

May is where the season gets real. Levels move from April's moderate to moderate-to-high, and the pace of change through the month is the thing that catches people out: a beach that looks acceptable on May 5 can be a different proposition on May 28.

This is also the month the bay's shape starts costing rather than helping. Akumal Bay is semi-enclosed, bounded by headlands and partly fronted by reef, and while the reef intercepts a share of incoming rafts, the bay exchanges less water than an open beach and holds what gets through. Light May winds compound it, since less mixing means arriving weed settles rather than dispersing.

The alternatives are the ones that carry the whole summer here: Yal-Ku Lagoon two kilometres north sees very little, the rocky ironshore at North Akumal accumulates less than the sandy crescents, Half Moon Bay is the worst-affected stretch and runs its own community-funded barrier, and the cenotes inland are freshwater and outside the weed's reach entirely. Our full Akumal sargassum guide covers the month-by-month pattern and the live trackers worth checking before you travel.

Book late May for both seasons at once

The specific reason to favour the second half of the month is that it is the only stretch where you get nesting underway, whale shark trips running, and low-season pricing simultaneously. Two weeks earlier the price is marginally lower but neither wildlife season has started, which removes most of May's distinctive appeal.

Cenotes carry more of the trip from here

From May through October, the cenotes stop being a highlight and become the backbone of an Akumal itinerary: cool, clear, unaffected by weed, and unaffected by an afternoon storm. Dos Ojos to the south, Taj Mahal near Xpu-Ha, and Aktun Ha inland on the Tulum to Cobá road are all short drives. See our Tulum cenote tour guide for the options.

Other Things Worth Doing in May

  • Nesting-season beach etiquette briefings: the ecological centre runs talks through the season, and a short one early in your stay changes how you read the marked upper beach for the rest of the trip.
  • Aktun Chen: a cave and underground river park minutes away, effectively indoors, and a good use of a hot afternoon.
  • Xel-Há and Xcaret: both built around sheltered inlets and freshwater, so they hold up regardless of what the open coast is doing.
  • Shore-entry reef diving at the ironshore: the northern sites reach clear water quickly and skip the shallowest inshore stretches.
  • Tulum dining and mezcal evenings: a good use of the hours after the heat breaks, and unaffected by whatever the beach is doing.
  • Airport logistics: Akumal sits about 90km south of Cancún airport, roughly a 75 to 80 minute drive. Our Cancún airport to Akumal transfer guide covers the options.

From Our Experience

What we consistently see is that May visitors split cleanly by expectation. The ones who came for the wildlife and the price were among the happiest of any month, because they got both with almost no crowds. The ones who came for a beach holiday and booked May because it was cheap were the least happy, because the reason it is cheap is visible on the sand. May is an excellent month if you know what you are buying.

Tips for Visiting Akumal in May

  • Favour the second half of the month: whale shark season opens around mid-May and nesting is underway, so the back half gives you both wildlife seasons at the same low-season rates.
  • Book whale shark trips as soon as the season opens: boat capacity is the one thing that tightens in May, and the early-season departures fill faster than the beach crowds would suggest.
  • Treat the cenotes as the backbone, not a side trip: from May the beach becomes unreliable and the heat becomes real. Cenotes solve both and are unaffected by either.
  • Be in the water by 8 or 9am: mornings give you the clearest water before the day's arrivals settle, and the bay fills from around 10am regardless of season.
  • Learn the nesting etiquette on arrival: nests are marked from May 1. Keep well back from markers, red light only after dark, and never dig or drive on the upper beach.
  • Carry cash for the conservation fee: reported amounts commonly run between $15 and $35 per person depending on the operator and what is included, so confirm the figure when you book.
  • Expect afternoon rain late in the month: rainfall roughly doubles from April to about 109mm, and late May starts producing the afternoon build-up that defines the summer.
  • Comparing months?: our Akumal in April guide covers the drier month before with its post-Easter value window, and our Akumal sargassum guide has the full seaweed calendar.
  • Looking at June instead?: our Akumal in June guide covers the month the rains and the sargassum peak both arrive, with whale shark sightings at their most reliable.

How We Selected These Tours

The Cancun Trip Insider team assessed these May options against a month where the wildlife is the draw and the beach is the weak point. We weighted cenote components, early start times, and operators whose itineraries hold up whether or not the bay looks good on the day. Every listing here comes from a highly rated operator, with ratings and review counts shown as published. We passed over options with unclear turtle-zone permissions or thin review histories, both of which matter more as nesting season opens and access rules tighten. The set spans short beach snorkels, cenote and turtle combinations, full-day ruins trips, and private tours with flexible timing, so a wildlife-led itinerary is possible at most budgets.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Akumal good in May?+

Yes, if you came for wildlife and value rather than the sand. Turtle nesting opens on May 1, whale shark season starts around mid-month, prices are among the year's lowest and crowds are thin. The trade-off is sargassum, which ramps up quickly through the month, and the return of afternoon rain.

What is the weather like in Akumal in May?+

Hot and mostly dry, turning wetter late. Highs average around 31°C (88°F) with lows near 24°C (75°F), so nights no longer cool off. Rainfall roughly doubles from April to about 109mm across about seven days, mostly late in the month. Sea temperature reaches around 28°C (82°F).

When does whale shark season start near Akumal?+

Around mid-May, running to roughly mid-September. Tours depart from the wider region rather than from Akumal Bay itself, so expect an early start and a transfer. Sightings become more reliable as the season builds through June and peak in July and August.

Is there sargassum in Akumal in May?+

Yes, moderate to high and rising quickly through the month.
