December is, for many, the best month of the year in Puerto Morelos. It is the peak of the dry season, so the beaches are pristine and sargassum-free, and the weather is cool, sunny, and comfortable, a welcome break from the summer heat. The sea is a touch cooler but still swimmable, and the whole coast looks its postcard best.

The catch is entirely about timing. Early-to-mid December is calm and reasonably priced, but Christmas and New Year are the busiest, priciest stretch of the entire year, so those dates need booking well in advance. Whale shark season is closed until May, so December is about the clean reef, the cenotes, the ruins, and the festive atmosphere. Temperature and Humidity

December is the coolest and most comfortable month. Days average around 28°C (82°F) with fresh nights near 20°C (68°F), and low humidity makes it feel crisp and pleasant, warm in the sun without the summer swelter. The sea cools to about 26 to 27°C (79 to 81°F), still comfortable for swimming, especially in the midday sun. For many, this is the ideal Caribbean climate.

Rain Pattern

December is firmly in the dry season, averaging only about five rain days. Showers are brief and uncommon, and sunny days are the rule. The main weather feature is the norte, the winter cool front, which is at its most frequent now: expect the occasional day or two of wind, cloud, and cooler temperatures, more so at times, before the sunshine returns. Sea and Outdoor Conditions

The sea is clean, clear, and sargassum-free, so December is excellent for the reef, with some of the best water clarity of the year. The one variable is the norte, which can bring a breezy, choppier day or two and occasionally affect boat departures; conditions settle again quickly. On the calm days between fronts, the reef and the beaches are at their absolute best, and the cooler air makes land tours and the ruins especially comfortable.

December is a tale of two halves: a calm, good-value first three weeks and a peak-of-the-year holiday finish.

Whale shark season is closed in December. The animals gather off the northern Yucatán only from about mid-May to mid-September, so there are no tours now, and the season will not reopen until next May. December makes up for it with the best beach and weather conditions of the year: a clean, clear reef, pristine sand, comfortable temperatures for the ruins, and a festive holiday atmosphere that the summer months cannot match.

December is a no-sargassum month. The seaweed season is long over, so the beaches are at their cleanest and the water at its clearest, the postcard Caribbean that draws people to the coast in winter. Along with the other dry-season months, it is the best time of year for pristine sand.

An occasional norte can stir up a little seagrass or churn the water briefly, but true sargassum is simply not a December concern.
