Akumal in December (2026): The Same Beach at Double the Price

⭐ Best December window: December 1 to 18. You get the year's best beach weather at roughly half what the same room costs a week later. The conditions on December 15 and December 27 are essentially identical; the prices are not.

December is where Akumal's weather peaks and its pricing fractures. Rainfall falls again to around 84mm, the sunniest and driest month in this series, the sargassum stays low, and the sea holds at a comfortable 27°C (81°F). We'd be blunt about the implication: the weather argument for December is unambiguous, and the entire planning question is which half of the month you book. The split worth planning around is not gradual, like August's or October's. It is a step change on a specific date.

Who December suits. The case for early December is close to unarguable: it is the best weather of the year at roughly November's prices, with the beach clean, the bay calm and the crowds still light. We'd steer anyone with flexible dates into the first two weeks without hesitation. The case for the holiday fortnight is different and narrower. You are paying a very large premium for the calendar rather than for the conditions, and it only makes sense if the timing itself is the point, which for a family Christmas it legitimately can be.

The best beach weather of the year

Rainfall drops again to roughly 84mm across about 7 days, down from November's 105mm and a long way from October's 204mm, and December carries the most sunshine of any month here. Highs sit at a comfortable 28°C (82°F) with lows around 21°C (70°F), the coolest nights of the year so far, and humidity finally drops to moderate or low. The late part of the month is typically drier still than the early part.

Nortes are now routine

The one caveat on an otherwise clean weather picture. Northerly cold fronts now arrive several times a month rather than occasionally, each bringing a day or two of wind, cloud, cooler air and choppier sea before moving through. They are short and they clear, but over a one-week stay the odds of catching one are meaningful, and a norte can knock several degrees off an evening.

As in November, orientation determines the impact. The north-facing stretches, Half Moon Bay in particular, take a northerly first, while the main bay's east-southeast aspect gives it more shelter. A norte day is a cenote day, and December's fronts are the strongest practical argument for keeping an underground option in the plan even in the driest month.

Sea Conditions

Water eases to around 27°C (81°F), the coolest of the series but still comfortable for extended snorkelling without a wetsuit, and visibility is excellent between fronts. The one thing that reliably interrupts it is a norte pushing chop and stirring the inshore water for a day or two.

This is the defining feature of the month, and it is worth stating in dates rather than in generalities.

• December 1 to 18: quiet, with excellent weather and rates close to November's. Comfortably one of the best value-for-conditions windows of the year.
• December 19 to January 2: the year's busiest and most expensive fortnight. Rates roughly double, the bay is at its most crowded, minimum-stay requirements are common, and the better properties sell out months ahead.
• Late December weather: typically drier than early December, so the holiday premium does buy marginally better odds on paper, though the difference is small next to the price gap.

Early-December rates run to roughly $200 a night for mid-range lodging, around $160 for boutique hotels and condos, and about $330 for all-inclusive resorts. Over the holidays those become roughly $370, $300 and $580 respectively. Low, and this is the heart of the clean season. December sits in the reliable November-to-April window alongside January and February, and the sand is as good as Akumal gets. For anyone whose impression of the bay was formed by summer photographs, December is the corrective.

The summer discipline is entirely unnecessary now. There is no need to get in before 9am to beat overnight weed, no 10am crowd surge to outrun outside the holiday fortnight, and no need to keep Yal-Ku Lagoon in reserve as a fallback. Those alternatives are worth visiting on their own merits this month rather than as escapes.

What can still move debris around is a norte rather than the Atlantic influx. A passing front stirs the water and can push weed and sand along the shoreline for a day or two, particularly on the north-facing stretches, which is a short-lived and very different mechanism from the summer season. The seasonal wildlife calendar is closed. Nesting ended around the end of October, the last hatchlings emerged in early October, and the offshore whale shark season does not reopen until around mid-May. December sits in the quiet middle of the year for anything seasonal.

What remains is the reason most people come anyway. The green turtles grazing the seagrass beds in Akumal Bay are resident foragers, present year-round, and December gives you close to ideal conditions to snorkel with them: clear water, a clean bay, comfortable air, and calm seas between fronts. Our advice for anyone choosing dates purely around the swim itself is that December and November are the two strongest months of the second half of the year, with December marginally clearer and November marginally cheaper.

Holiday crowding is the one thing to plan around. From December 19 the bay's managed entry points get busy in a way they have not since August, so the early-morning start that summer demanded becomes worth reviving over the holiday fortnight. Outside those dates, timing is unimportant. The bay rules are unchanged year-round: life jackets are mandatory in the guided zone, a minimum-distance rule applies, and guided snorkeling is not run on Mondays, a conservation rest day, with independent entry permitted before 10am that morning. Conditions stop being the variable

Across this series, every month had something to plan around: heat, storms, rain, seaweed. December removes almost all of it and replaces it with a scheduling problem instead. Whether your trip works now depends on your dates and your booking lead time rather than on the sky, which is a much easier problem to solve, and one you solve months in advance rather than on the morning.

Keep a cenote day for the fronts

The exception, and the one genuine reason not to treat December as weather-proof. With several nortes passing through, a windy grey day is a realistic part of a week here. Dos Ojos to the south, Taj Mahal near Xpu-Ha, and Aktun Ha inland on the Tulum to Cobá road are all unaffected by what the wind is doing above ground. • Christmas and New Year in the bays: the residential communities and small hotels run their own low-key festivities, which is a very different holiday atmosphere from the big resort zones up the coast.
• Aktun Chen: the cave and underground river park nearby, and the most reliable norte-day plan in the area.
• Long shore-entry snorkel sessions: visibility is at its best of the year between fronts, and the ironshore sites north of the bay reward a slow morning.
• Xel-Há and Xcaret: both are excellent in December weather, though both are at their busiest over the holiday fortnight.
• The southern bays: Jade Bay and South Akumal stay quiet even over the holidays, which makes them a useful escape when the main bay fills.

• Book December 1 to 18 if you possibly can: the weather is the year's best and the rates are close to November's. It is the strongest value window in this whole series of months.
• If the holidays are fixed, book very early: the good villas and the better hotels in the preferred bays sell out months ahead, and minimum-stay requirements are common over Christmas and New Year.
• Pre-book tours for the holiday fortnight: group departures fill in a way they do not at any other point in the dry season, so arriving and booking on the day stops working.
• Expect at least one norte on a week-long stay: several fronts pass through in December, each lasting a day or two, so keep one flexible day in the plan for it.
• Pack a genuine layer: nights fall to around 21°C (70°F) and a front can push that noticeably lower, which surprises people who packed only beachwear.
