Akumal in November (2026): The Month the Numbers Turn

⭐ Best November window: the first three weeks. Rain has dropped off, sargassum is low, nortes are not yet frequent, and you are ahead of both US Thanksgiving demand at the end of the month and the December holiday climb behind it.

If October was the month whose reputation ran ahead of its rainfall, November is where the numbers catch up. Rain roughly halves, humidity eases to moderate, highs settle at a comfortable 28°C (83°F), and the sargassum that dominated the summer stays low. Our read is that this is the first month since spring where you can plan an Akumal trip around the beach and reasonably expect the beach to cooperate, and it arrives before the December price climb.

Who November suits. Almost everyone, which is not something worth saying about July or September. We'd single this out for travelers who want dry-season conditions without dry-season prices: the weather is close to December's, the beach is close to January's, and the rates are closer to October's. Where this month earns its keep is the gap between quality and cost, which is wider in November than at any other point in the calendar. The honest limitation is that it is no longer a bargain in the way September was, and the wildlife calendar has gone quiet.

The rainfall drop is the headline

Worth being clear about the scale of the change, because it is the largest month-over-month improvement on the Akumal calendar. Rainfall falls from roughly 204mm in October to about 105mm in November, and rain days from around 14 to 8. That is the difference between planning on the assumption of rain and planning on the assumption of sun. Humidity drops to moderate at the same time, so the air stops feeling heavy.

Temperature

Highs ease to around 28°C (83°F) with lows near 23°C (73°F). This is the first month since spring where the evenings are genuinely pleasant rather than warm and sticky, and where a full day outdoors is comfortable at any hour. Water stays at about 28°C (82°F), still warm enough that nobody needs a wetsuit for a snorkel.

Nortes: the new variable

Hurricane season closes on November 30 and risk is very low all month, but the Yucatán winter brings its own weather feature in its place. Nortes are cold fronts pushing down from the north, arriving two or three times a month once the season is established, each bringing one to three days of northerly wind, cloud, cooler air and choppier sea before clearing quickly. In November they are just beginning, and mostly late in the month, so they are a late-November consideration rather than an early-November one.

For Akumal specifically, the thing to know is that orientation decides who feels it. A norte blows from the north, so the north-facing stretches take it first: Half Moon Bay, the same crescent that suffers most in the summer sargassum season, is the most exposed to winter fronts. The main bay, facing east-southeast, is generally more sheltered from a northerly. If a front lands during your stay, a norte day is a cenote day.

November is quiet for three weeks and then briefly is not, which makes the timing within the month straightforward to plan around.

• November 1 to 21: light crowds and the best value of the dry season. The bay is calm, the entry points are unhurried, and rates sit well below December.
• November 22 to 30: US Thanksgiving demand arrives. Rates step up at the properties that cater to it, and the beach and tours get noticeably busier for a week.

Prices run to roughly $190 a night for mid-range lodging, around $155 for boutique hotels and condos, and about $320 for all-inclusive resorts. Those figures sit above October and well below the December holidays, which is exactly the trade November offers: near-peak conditions at clearly sub-peak rates.

We'd argue this is the best value proposition on the Akumal calendar, better than the September floor. September was cheaper in absolute terms but you were paying for weather risk with the discount; November asks a little more and delivers conditions that are close to the January standard. Low, and reliably so. November sits at the start of the clean window that runs through to around April, alongside December, January and February, and the beach is among the cleanest it gets all year. After the October transition, this is where conditions settle rather than merely improve.

The bay's mechanics still apply in the background: Akumal Bay is semi-enclosed and clears more slowly than open coast, so an unusual late arrival can linger a little longer here than at neighbouring beaches. In practice this is rarely the deciding factor in November. The morning-timing discipline that mattered so much in July, getting in before the weed and before the crowds, is no longer necessary, and a mid-morning swim is simply a mid-morning swim.

One thing that does change conditions this month is a norte rather than the seaweed. A passing front can stir up the water and push weed and debris around for a day or two, particularly on the north-facing stretches, which is a different mechanism from the summer influx and a much shorter-lived one. The nesting and hatching season has closed. Nesting runs to roughly the end of October and the last hatchlings emerge in the first part of that month, so November has neither. The daytime turtle snorkel, though, is arguably at its best. The green turtles grazing the bay's seagrass beds are resident foragers rather than seasonal visitors, so they are there year-round, and November gives you the conditions to enjoy them properly: clear, calm water, a clean bay, comfortable air temperature, and light crowds. We'd point you toward November over any summer month if the swim itself is the priority rather than the nesting spectacle.

The bay rules are unchanged year-round. Life jackets are mandatory in the guided zone, a minimum-distance rule applies, and guided snorkeling is not run on Mondays, a conservation rest day, with independent entry allowed before 10am that morning. The month everything works at once

Every previous month in this series required a plan built around a constraint: the heat in July, the storms in August and September, the rain in October. November is the first month where the itinerary can simply be a list of what you want to do. That sounds unremarkable until you compare it to planning a July week, where roughly half the advice is about what to do when the beach fails you.

The wildlife calendar is the tradeoff

What November gives up is the summer's wildlife. No whale sharks, no nesting, no hatchlings. The resident turtles in the bay remain, and they are the main event here anyway, but travelers choosing between November and September are effectively choosing between good conditions and big wildlife, and they cannot have both. • Day of the Dead tail, November 1 to 2: observances continue into the first days of the month across the corridor, so an early-November arrival catches the end of it.
• Long shore-entry snorkel sessions: visibility is at its best of the second half of the year, which makes the ironshore sites north of the bay genuinely rewarding.
• Aktun Chen: the cave and underground river park nearby is a good norte-day plan if a front lands during your stay.
• Xel-Há and Xcaret: comfortable weather and pre-holiday crowd levels make November one of the better months for both.
• The southern bays: Jade Bay and South Akumal are quiet, clean and at their most pleasant now, and easy to reach for a half day.

• Book the first three weeks if you can: Thanksgiving demand lifts rates and crowds at the end of the month, and nortes are more likely late than early.
• Stop planning around the beach failing: unlike every month since spring, the bay is a reliable plan in November, so build the week around it rather than around escapes from it.
• Keep one cenote day anyway: if a norte lands, a windy, choppy day on the coast is the perfect time to be underground where the weather does not reach.
• Check the orientation of your stretch: north-facing Half Moon Bay feels a norte first, while the main bay is more sheltered from a northerly.
• Pack a light layer: evenings drop to around 23°C (73°F) and a norte can knock several degrees off that, which catches out people who packed only for the Caribbean.
• Do not come for turtle nesting: the season closed at the end of October, so November is for the resident turtles in the bay, not the life cycle on the sand.
• Book ahead for Thanksgiving week: the late-November bump is short but real, and the better villas in the good bays go first.
