Mayan Monkey Cancun

Almost every hostel in Cancun is downtown, not on the beach, and the one exception is also the highest-rated. This guide ranks the 7 best Cancun hostels by verified guest score and review volume, with live nightly rates from $63.

What You Should Know

  • Cancun's hostels are downtown, not on the beach. Six of the seven best-reviewed sit in Centro near the ADO bus terminal; only Mayan Monkey has a Hotel Zone address.
  • From a Centro hostel every beach is a 20 to 25 minute R1 or R2 bus ride down Avenida Tulum, roughly 12 pesos a fare, twice on any beach day.
  • Solo rates start near $63 at Mayan Monkey, $70 at Mezcal Hotel, and $80 at Nomads Rooftop Pool, then roughly double over Christmas, New Year, and February.
  • Overall scores cluster tightly between 7.9 and 9.2, so they barely separate these hostels. Cleanliness is the category that actually splits them, running from 8.6 down to 6.5.

Hostels in Cancun: What the Guest Scores Actually Show

The most useful thing to know when you are choosing the best hostel in Cancun, Mexico is geographic: the hostels are not where the beach is. Cancun splits into a 14-mile barrier island of resorts (the Hotel Zone) and a working city on the mainland (Centro), and with one exception every well-reviewed hostel is in Centro. That exception, Mayan Monkey Cancun, is also the highest-volume property on this list by a wide margin at 4,958 guest reviews, which tells you how much demand there is for a bed on the actual beach strip. The other six sit in the Centro grid around Avenida Tulum, Calle Claveles, and Avenida Carlos Nader, a 20 to 25 minute R1 or R2 bus ride from the beaches.

Ranked by guest score weighted for review volume, the seven best Cancun hostels score between 7.9 and 9.2 out of 10. That is a narrow band, and the interesting differences are inside the category scores rather than the headline number. Service and location are strong almost everywhere: Naranjo Hostel posts a 9.5 for service, Moloch Hostel & Suites a 9.1, Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool a 9.1. Cleanliness is where these properties separate, running from 8.6 at the top down to 6.5 at Naranjo, where guests specifically report hair, stains, and dirt. What matters more than the overall score is that cleanliness gap: a two-point spread inside a 7.9-to-9.2 band means two hostels with near-identical headline numbers can feel completely different on arrival. Food and beverage is the other soft spot, bottoming out at 6.3 at Moloch, where reviewers call out thin breakfast options. If you are still building the trip around your bed, our guide to the best things to do in Cancun without a car covers the bus-and-ferry logistics that matter most from a Centro base, and our budget all-inclusive resorts guide ranks nine value resorts from $127 per night if a private room with meals included turns out to be the better deal for your trip.

Centro: Where Almost Every Cancun Hostel Is

Downtown Cancun on the mainland, and the location of six of the seven hostels on this list. The cluster is tight: Nomads Party Hotel, The Boat House Cancun, and Xtabentun sit within a few blocks of each other on Calle Claveles and Calle Alcatraces, Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool and Mezcal Hotel are both on Avenida Carlos Nader, and Moloch Hostel & Suites and Naranjo Hostel are a short walk north. Everything here is within reach of the ADO bus terminal on Avenida Tulum, Parque de las Palapas, and the Mercado 28 area. There is no beach, and the R1 and R2 buses to the Hotel Zone run from Avenida Tulum for roughly 12 pesos.

Hotel Zone: One Hostel, On the Beach

The barrier island where the resorts are. Mayan Monkey Cancun at Kukulcan Km 9.5 is the only hostel here with a meaningful review base, and it is positioned in the busiest stretch of the strip, close to Playa Chac Mool, Playa Gaviota Azul, and the Punta Cancun nightlife cluster. Staying here costs more per night than Centro, but it removes the daily bus commute and puts you inside walking distance of the beach clubs and clubs.

Puerto Juarez: The Isla Mujeres Ferry Hub

No hostels, but the departure point for the Isla Mujeres ferry and a common day-trip target from a Centro base. From downtown it is a short taxi or a bus up Avenida Lopez Portillo.

Punta Sam: Further North

The stretch north of Puerto Juarez has a couple of beachfront budget properties, but their guest scores fall below the 7.9 floor used for this ranking and public transport is thin. Worth knowing about, not worth planning around.

Punta Cancun

Where the Hotel Zone strip bends, and the centre of Cancun nightlife. Coco Bongo, Mandala, and the main club cluster are here, along with Playa Gaviota Azul and the Forum area. Mayan Monkey Cancun at Km 9.5 is on the edge of this district, which is the practical reason it is the hostel of choice for anyone whose trip revolves around the beach clubs. It is also why guests report noise as a trade-off.

North Hotel Zone

Gentler waves and calmer beaches around Playa Langosta and Playa Tortugas. Nothing hostel-priced up here, but Playa Tortugas is the easiest free swimming beach to reach from a Centro hostel by R1 bus.

Middle Hotel Zone

La Isla Shopping Village, the Interactive Aquarium, and a long run of large resorts. Useful as a mid-strip landmark when you are working out where to get off the bus.

South Hotel Zone

Quieter, further from everything, and where the strip meets the mainland again near the airport road. No hostels, and a long bus ride from Centro.

Best Cancun Hostels: Our Full Picks

Mayan Monkey Cancun - Social Hostel

Rated 8.6/10 across 4,958 guest reviews, Mayan Monkey is both the most-reviewed hostel in Cancun and the only one with a genuine Hotel Zone address, at Kukulcan Km 9.5 roughly 200 metres from Playa Chac Mool. Location scores 9.1 and service 9.0, which is what you would expect from those two facts. It runs a pool with a view, a sun terrace, a bar and snack bar, a shared kitchen, lockers, a tour desk, and evening entertainment, and reviewers repeatedly mention free yoga classes and a happy hour. It is adults-only. From $63 per night solo. The two recurring complaints are worth knowing before you book: guests report mould on the first floor, and room assignment mix-ups come up often enough that we'd make sure to confirm your room type at check-in rather than assume. Cleanliness is its lowest category at 8.1, which is still the second-best score on this list. We wouldn't choose this for a quiet trip: Km 9.5 sits on the edge of the Punta Cancun club cluster, and the beach address you are paying for is also the noise you are buying.

Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool Cancun

Rated 8.5/10 across 2,662 guest reviews, this is the strongest Centro option by review volume, on Avenida Carlos Nader a few minutes from the ADO bus terminal. The rooftop pool and bar are the draw, alongside a pool table, a shared kitchen, a shared lounge, a tour desk, and bike and car hire. Location scores 9.2 and value for money 9.1, the highest value score on this list. Room quality is the weak point at 7.6, with reviewers specifically flagging noise and bed comfort, and cleanliness sits at 8.1 with some pool and WiFi maintenance complaints. From $80 per night solo, which makes it the most expensive of the three bookable hostels here despite being downtown. We'd only choose this over Mayan Monkey if the rooftop pool and the bus-terminal proximity matter more than being on the beach.

Nomads Party Hotel

Rated 8.5/10 across 1,058 guest reviews, the second Nomads property sits a few blocks south on Calle Claveles and is built around a different idea: a rooftop garden, a pool table, a lap pool, beach yoga, and a coworking room. The front desk keeps limited hours rather than running 24 hours, which is a real consideration for a late flight arrival. This one is not bookable through our reservation system, so you will need to go direct. We'd give this the edge for anyone who wants the party-hostel format specifically, and we'd look elsewhere if you need to sleep.

Mezcal Hotel

Rated 9.2/10 across 85 guest reviews, Mezcal posts the highest scores of any hostel in Cancun: 10.0 for location, 9.6 for service, 9.8 for overall experience. It is a hostel-category property on Calle Mero off Avenida Carlos Nader with a garden, a terrace, a library, a snack bar, mosquito nets, and karaoke. From $70 per night solo. The biggest difference between Mezcal and the two properties above it is sample size, not quality, and two caveats keep it at fourth rather than first. The review base is 85 stays, which is not enough to be confident the score holds at scale the way Mayan Monkey's 4,958 reviews are. And guests report confusion over the hotel name, which matters when you are giving a taxi driver an address: it is a hostel called Mezcal Hotel, and there is more than one mezcal-themed business in the area. Reviewers also flag inconsistent WiFi. Upper floors are reachable by stairs only.

Moloch Hostel & Suites

Rated 8.1/10 across 701 guest reviews, Moloch is on Calle Margaritas in Centro and is the one property on this list that lists family rooms, which makes it the default answer for anyone travelling with kids who still wants hostel pricing. It has an outdoor pool, a garden, a games room, a shared kitchen, a shared lounge, a minimarket, and a 24-hour front desk. Location scores 9.1 (reviewers consistently mention how close the bus stations are) and service 9.1. Food and beverage is the worst score on this whole list at 6.3, with specific complaints about breakfast, so plan to eat elsewhere or use the kitchen. Cleanliness sits at 7.8 and noise comes up in reviews. Not bookable through our reservation system.

The Boat House Cancun

Rated 7.9/10 across 902 guest reviews, The Boat House on Calle Alcatraces is the quietest-feeling of the Centro cluster: adults-only, non-smoking throughout, with a garden, a shared kitchen, a shared lounge, a games room, board games, and a concierge who arranges fishing, diving, and snorkelling. Service scores 8.5 and location 8.6. The honest problem is cleanliness at 7.0, the lowest of the four Centro hostels with meaningful review volume, and the complaints are specifically about shared bathrooms and the kitchen. Reviewers also mention restricted air-conditioning hours and extra fees on arrival, so ask what is included before you commit. Not bookable through our reservation system.

Naranjo Hostel

Rated 8.3/10 across 150 guest reviews, Naranjo on Calle Granada has the best service score in Cancun at 9.5, and the reviews read like it: guests describe attentive hosts who make restaurant and transport recommendations. Value for money scores 9.0 and location 9.0. It is adults-only, with a garden, BBQ facilities, a shared kitchen, a shared lounge, lockers, a minimarket, currency exchange, and a 24-hour front desk. It sits seventh because cleanliness scores 6.5, the weakest number anywhere on this list, with guests reporting hair, stains, and dirt, alongside cramped rooms and hot-water problems. We'd book this if the hosts and the price matter more to you than the room, and we'd go in with realistic expectations after that 6.5 cleanliness score. Not bookable through our reservation system.

What to Expect at a Cancun Hostel

  • Getting there from the airport: There is no hostel shuttle from Cancun airport. The ADO bus runs from all terminals to the downtown ADO terminal on Avenida Tulum for around 120 to 140 pesos, which drops you within walking distance of Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool, Moloch, Naranjo, and Mezcal Hotel. For Mayan Monkey in the Hotel Zone, take the ADO to downtown and then the R1 or R2 bus, or book a transfer. Mayan Monkey, Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool, The Boat House, and Mezcal Hotel all list an airport shuttle at additional charge.
  • Check-in and front-desk hours: Mayan Monkey checks in from 3:00 PM until midnight and checks out at noon. Mayan Monkey, Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool, Moloch, and Naranjo run 24-hour front desks. Nomads Party Hotel and The Boat House do not, so a red-eye arrival needs a message ahead.
  • Lockers and valuables: Mayan Monkey, Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool, The Boat House, Moloch, and Naranjo all list lockers, and Naranjo adds a safety deposit box. Bring your own padlock rather than assuming one is provided.
  • Kitchens and eating: Shared kitchens are the norm here (Mayan Monkey, Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool, The Boat House, Moloch, Naranjo, and Mezcal Hotel all have one), and given that food and beverage is the weakest review category across the board, using it is usually the better call. Centro puts you next to Mercado 28 and the Parque de las Palapas food stalls, which is a real advantage over a Hotel Zone base. What typically happens is guests plan to eat out every night and start cooking by day three, once they have seen Hotel Zone restaurant prices.
  • Pools and social areas: Mayan Monkey, Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool, Nomads Party Hotel, and Moloch all have pools. Mayan Monkey and Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool are the two with an on-site bar, which is the practical difference between a social hostel and a quiet one.
  • Getting to the beach from Centro: The R1 and R2 buses run along Avenida Tulum to the Hotel Zone for roughly 12 pesos and take 20 to 25 minutes to reach Playa Tortugas or Playa Delfines. Budget for two fares a day if you are staying downtown, and factor the commute into which hostel you pick.
  • Adults-only is common: Mayan Monkey, Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool, The Boat House, and Naranjo are all flagged adults-only. If you are travelling with children, Moloch Hostel & Suites is the one property here with family rooms.

How Much a Cancun Hostel Actually Costs

The three hostels bookable through our reservation system price between $63 and $195 per night for a solo three-night stay, depending entirely on when you check in. That range is wider than the gap between the hostels themselves, which is the single most useful pricing fact on this page.

Budget: $63 to $80 per night

Low-season check-ins, roughly May, June, September, and October, plus most of the shoulder weeks. At these dates Mayan Monkey prices around $63 to $81, Mezcal Hotel around $70 to $80, and Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool around $80 to $82. This is the band to aim for, and it is available for most of the year outside the peak windows.

Mid-range: $90 to $130 per night

Dry-season and busy shoulder dates. Mayan Monkey moves to $90 to $130, Mezcal Hotel to $100 to $121, and Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool to $105 to $125. Nothing about the property changes at these prices; you are paying for the calendar.

Peak: $130 to $195 per night

Christmas, New Year, February, and spring-break weeks. Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool has hit $195 per night on late-December dates in our rate checks, Mayan Monkey $130, and Mezcal Hotel $132. At the top of this band a private room at a budget resort with meals included starts to compete on total cost, which is worth comparing rather than assuming.

What to budget beyond the bed

Add the airport bus (around 120 to 140 pesos each way), two R1 or R2 fares a day if you are downtown (roughly 24 pesos), and food. Cooking in the shared kitchen and eating at Mercado 28 or Parque de las Palapas keeps daily costs low; eating on the Hotel Zone strip does not. The sweet spot on this list is Mayan Monkey in low season: it is the cheapest of the three bookable hostels, it removes the daily bus fare entirely, and it carries the largest review base of any hostel in the city. Most people don't realize the commute costs time rather than money: the bus fare is trivial, but 40 to 50 minutes of round-trip travel on every beach day is the real price of a Centro bed.

From Our Experience

We've found the useful question is not which Cancun hostel is best but whether you want a bed or a base: the Centro properties are places to sleep between activities, while Mayan Monkey and the two Nomads hostels run bars, pools and entertainment that become the trip itself.

Tips for Booking a Hostel in Cancun

  • Decide Hotel Zone or Centro before you compare properties: This choice sets your daily rhythm more than anything else. A Centro hostel is cheaper and puts you next to real restaurants, markets, and the ADO terminal, but you will ride the R1 or R2 bus to every beach. Mayan Monkey costs more and is the only hostel on the strip, but you walk to the sand. The main tradeoff is not money, it is control over your day: from Centro you commit to a bus schedule on every beach day, while from Km 9.5 you can go back to the room mid-afternoon and return without losing an hour each way.
  • Check the cleanliness score, not just the overall score: From what we've seen across these review sets, overall scores on this list cluster between 7.9 and 9.2, but cleanliness runs from 8.6 down to 6.5. Naranjo Hostel has the best service score in the city and the worst cleanliness score, and that combination is not visible in a single star rating.
  • Confirm your room category at check-in: Room assignment mix-ups are the second-most-common complaint at Mayan Monkey across nearly 5,000 reviews. Have your confirmation showing the room or dorm type you paid for.
  • Plan for a late arrival: Nomads Party Hotel and The Boat House Cancun do not run 24-hour front desks. If your flight lands after 10 PM, either message the property ahead or pick one of the four properties here that does staff reception around the clock.
  • Bring your own padlock: Five of the seven list lockers, but none of them promise a lock. A travel padlock costs less than one night's beach-club drink.
  • Ask what is not included: Reviewers at The Boat House Cancun specifically mention extra fees on arrival and restricted air-conditioning hours. Mayan Monkey's terms note that a deposit may be required at the property and that an early departure is charged at the full stay amount.
  • Use the shared kitchen: Food and beverage is the weakest review category at almost every property here, bottoming out at 6.3 at Moloch. Six of the seven have a shared kitchen, and Centro's markets are genuinely cheap.
  • Book day tours rather than staying put: A hostel is a base, not the trip. Our guide to the best things to do in Cancun covers the full range, our things to do without a car guide is built specifically around bus and ferry access, and the Cancun pub crawl is the usual social starting point from a hostel base.
  • Compare against a budget resort before you commit: On peak dates, when hostel beds run $130 to $195, a private room at a budget all-inclusive with meals included can work out cheaper overall. Our guide to the best budget all-inclusive resorts in Cancun ranks nine value options from $127 per night.
  • Check the month before you fix the dates: The same bed roughly doubles between low and peak season. Our best time to visit Cancun guide breaks down weather, crowds, and pricing month by month, and September is the cheapest month outright.
  • Read up on safety from a downtown base: Most hostel guests stay in Centro rather than the Hotel Zone, which is a different environment from a resort. Our is Cancun safe guide covers the practical, area-by-area detail.
  • Consider Isla Mujeres for part of the trip: The island is a 20-minute ferry from Puerto Juarez and has its own budget accommodation scene. Our guide to the best hotels in Isla Mujeres covers 12 options from $106 per night.

Why Our Rankings Are Different

Most “best hostels in Cancun” lists are assembled from other people’s public ratings. This one is not. The Cancun Trip Insider team ranks these 7 hostels from our own hotel reservation system: the same first-party inventory, verified post-stay guest reviews, and live rate data that power the booking links on this page. That is why we can tell you which hostels we cannot sell you, and why every price here was checked rather than quoted.

Six inputs go into this guide:

  • Guest score: the aggregate post-stay rating out of 10, not a star classification. Most of these properties carry no meaningful star rating at all, which is why we do not publish one.
  • Review volume: how many verified stays that score rests on, from 4,958 at Mayan Monkey down to 85 at Mezcal Hotel. This is what stops a 9.2 from a handful of stays outranking an 8.6 from thousands.
  • Category scores: separate ratings for cleanliness, service, location, room quality, amenities, value, and food. This is where these hostels actually diverge, and it is the reason the overall number is the least useful figure on the page.
  • Current inventory: whether we hold live, bookable availability, checked across 24 date and occupancy combinations per property. We disclose this rather than rank on it: Nomads Party Hotel sits third and we cannot sell it.
  • Location: Hotel Zone against Centro, plus walking distance to the ADO terminal, the R1 and R2 bus route, and the nearest beach.
  • Practical traveler fit: adults-only policies, family rooms, front-desk hours, shared kitchens, and lockers, taken from property data rather than marketing copy.

We started from every hostel-category property within 25km of downtown Cancun, then applied two thresholds: a minimum guest score of 7.9 out of 10 and a minimum of 85 verified reviews. That removed Punta Sam (7.5), Hotel and hostel KAB (7.7), La Luz Hostal Cancun (7.1), and Xtabentun Hostal (7.1) on score, and a long tail of properties with fewer than 85 reviews on sample size. We also excluded Nilu Cancun Zona Hotelera by Selina despite its 3,908 reviews, because it carries no guest score in our data and we will not rank a property on review volume alone.

The final order weights guest score against review volume rather than using either on its own. That is why Mayan Monkey (8.6 across 4,958 reviews) ranks ahead of Mezcal Hotel (9.2 across 85 reviews), and why Naranjo Hostel places seventh despite an 8.3 overall: its 6.5 cleanliness score is the weakest number on this list.

Three of the seven are bookable through our reservation system and carry live rates. The other four returned no availability across 24 separate date and occupancy combinations, so they are marked book direct rather than given a price we cannot verify. Pricing was checked across 11 check-in dates spanning the next eight months in August 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best hostel in Cancun?+

Mayan Monkey Cancun - Social Hostel ranks first, with an 8.6/10 guest score across 4,958 reviews and prices from $63 per night for a solo stay. It is the only hostel on the Hotel Zone beach strip, about 200 metres from Playa Chac Mool at Kukulcan Km 9.5, with a pool, a bar, a shared kitchen, and evening entertainment. It is adults-only. Mezcal Hotel has the highest score in the city at 9.2/10, but across only 85 reviews.

Is Mayan Monkey Cancun worth it?+

Yes, if you want to be on the beach strip rather than downtown. Mayan Monkey is the most-reviewed hostel in Cancun at 4,958 reviews and scores 9.1 for location and 9.0 for service, and it is the only hostel with a genuine Hotel Zone address, which removes the daily 20 to 25 minute bus commute that every Centro hostel requires. Rates start around $63 per night solo in low season. The two recurring complaints in reviews are mould on the first floor and room assignment mix-ups, so confirm your room type at check-in.

Are there hostels on the beach in Cancun?+

Effectively one. Mayan Monkey Cancun at Kukulcan Km 9.5 is the only hostel on the Hotel Zone strip with a meaningful review base, and it sits about 200 metres from Playa Chac Mool. Every other well-reviewed hostel in Cancun is in Centro on the mainland, with no beach access, roughly 20 to 25 minutes from the sand by R1 or R2 bus.

How much does a hostel in Cancun cost per night?+

The bookable hostels in this guide run from $63 to $195 per night for a solo three-night stay, depending on the season. Low-season check-ins in May, June, September, and October price around $63 to $82. Dry-season and busy shoulder dates run $90 to $130. Christmas, New Year, February, and spring-break weeks reach $130 to $195. The month you travel moves the price more than which hostel you choose.

Where should I stay in Cancun as a backpacker?+

Centro if budget is the priority, the Hotel Zone if beach access is. Six of the seven best-reviewed Cancun hostels are in Centro, clustered around Avenida Carlos Nader, Calle Claveles, and Calle Alcatraces, close to the ADO bus terminal, Mercado 28, and Parque de las Palapas. That saves money and puts you next to real restaurants, but you will bus to every beach. Mayan Monkey Cancun is the only Hotel Zone option and costs more per night while eliminating the commute.

Do Cancun hostels have private rooms?+

Yes. Every property in this guide offers private rooms alongside shared dorms, and the live rates shown on this page are for private accommodation on a solo three-night stay, which is why they sit above typical dorm-bed pricing. Moloch Hostel & Suites is the only property here that also lists family rooms.

Are hostels in Cancun safe?+

The properties in this guide list the standard protections: five of the seven have lockers, four run 24-hour front desks, Naranjo Hostel adds a safety deposit box, and several list CCTV in common areas. Bring your own padlock, since lockers are provided but locks generally are not. Because most hostel guests stay in Centro rather than the Hotel Zone, our separate guide to whether Cancun is safe to travel covers the area-by-area detail that matters from a downtown base.

How do I get from Cancun airport to a hostel?+

Take the ADO bus from any airport terminal to the downtown ADO terminal on Avenida Tulum, around 120 to 140 pesos, which leaves you walking distance from Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool, Mezcal Hotel, Moloch, and Naranjo. For Mayan Monkey in the Hotel Zone, continue on the R1 or R2 bus from Avenida Tulum. Mayan Monkey, Nomads Hotel & Rooftop Pool, The Boat House, and Mezcal Hotel all offer an airport shuttle at additional charge if you would rather arrange it through the property.
