Cancun International Airport (CUN): The Practical Choice

Cancun is about 53 to 55 kilometers north of Playa del Carmen, a 50 to 60 minute drive on Highway 307. It is the busiest airport in the region by far, with the widest range of direct international flights and the most transfer, shuttle, and bus options, so fares are competitive and departures are frequent. For the overwhelming majority of visitors, we'd book into Cancun and not overthink the alternatives.

Cozumel Airport (CZM): Closest by Distance, but Across the Water

Cozumel's airport is the nearest to Playa del Carmen in a straight line, but Cozumel is an island. Reaching Playa means a taxi to the Cozumel ferry dock, the roughly 45 minute ferry crossing to Playa del Carmen, and then onward to your hotel. Flight options into Cozumel are also far more limited than Cancun. We'd only choose Cozumel if you find a direct flight that Cancun cannot match, since the ferry leg adds time and cost to every trip into Playa.

Tulum Airport (TQO): A Southern Option

Tulum's international airport opened at the end of 2023 and sits roughly 100 kilometers south of Playa del Carmen, about a 1 hour 15 minute to 1 hour 40 minute drive. Its flight list is growing but still smaller than Cancun's. If you find a noticeably cheaper or more convenient flight into Tulum, the transfer up to Playa is straightforward, but for most itineraries Cancun remains the better-connected gateway.

The whole trip follows Federal Highway 307, the coastal road that links Cancun airport with the Riviera Maya. It is a straightforward, well-maintained route of about 54 kilometers (34 miles) with no tricky turns until you reach Playa del Carmen, and in normal traffic the drive takes 50 to 60 minutes. Cancun International Airport has four terminals, and most international flights arrive at Terminal 2, 3, or 4. After clearing immigration and customs, you exit into the arrivals hall where timeshare sales staff typically approach arriving travelers. They cannot book your transfer; their offers are for timeshare presentations, not airport services. Walk past them. Your pre-booked driver waits in the designated meeting area beyond, usually holding a sign with your name.

Pre-booked private transfers: an agent meets you at the arrivals exit, verifies your booking, then brings the vehicle around. Expect 10 to 15 minutes between meeting the rep and being on the road. ADO bus: the ADO counter and bus bay are just outside the terminal exits. The bus arrives at Playa's downtown terminal near Fifth Avenue, not your hotel, so factor in a short taxi to your accommodation.
