December is when Bacalar's dry season begins: fewer rainy days, cooler mornings and the lagoon's colours coming back to full strength. The first half of the month is quiet and steady; from about December 19, Christmas and New Year push rates up by half or more at most hotels.
What You Should Know
- December starts the dry season: rain on about 7 to 10 days and 35 to 66 mm in total, down from 8 to 11 days in November, with afternoons of 29.5 to 30°C (85 to 86°F) and cooler mornings, by the official normals for the nearest stations.
- The first half of the month is the value window. Comparing 21 hotels with their own early-December rates, prices were flat to about December 17, then rose: the typical hotel charged about 36% more on Christmas Eve, 54% more on Christmas Day and 58% more on New Year's Eve.
- Rooms sell out over the holidays. About a quarter fewer hotels had rooms for Christmas to New Year 2026 than for early December when we checked in October, so book the holiday weeks early.
- Tours do not follow hotel prices. Every tour on our shortlist kept its normal price over Christmas and New Year 2026, with open dates on December 24, 26 and 31. A private pontoon at $215 for up to six suits holiday groups.

💰 December hotel prices (Bacalar, hotels with 80+ guest reviews):
Dec 1–17: ~$149–156/night, flat apart from weekends · Dec 19–22: rising · Christmas (Dec 24–25): typical hotel +36–54% · New Year's Eve: typical hotel +58% (median ~$183)
Live rates for the same 21 hotels used in our January guide, each priced for every night from 30 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, two adults, one night, cheapest meal plan, before taxes, pulled 23 October 2026, and compared hotel by hotel with their own December 1 to 10 rates. Our January guide's New Year's Eve figure of about $166 comes from a slightly larger set of 24 hotels.
Yes, Bacalar is good in December, and especially in its first half. The rainy season is over: the official normals for the three nearest stations show rain on 7 to 10 days, mostly short showers, and the lagoon's colours come back to full strength on the growing number of clear days. Mornings are cool and fresh, and the jungle around Ichkabal is still green after the rains.
The second half of the month is a different trip. From about December 19 hotel rates in our sample start to rise, and over Christmas and New Year most hotels charge half as much again or more. Mexico's school winter break, as reported from the SEP calendar, starts on December 21, and fewer hotels had rooms to sell for the holiday nights. Most people don't realize how sharp the line is: in our sample, the typical hotel charged the same on December 15 as on December 5, and about 50% more two weeks later.
In our view, December 1 to 17 is one of the best-value fortnights of the year: dry-season weather at autumn prices. Families tied to the holidays will still find a warm, calm lagoon, and should book rooms early and choose tours priced per group.
Where to Stay on a December Trip to Bacalar
Book the holiday weeks early. When we checked in October, about a quarter fewer hotels had rooms for December 25 to January 2 than for early December, and the typical hotel was charging half as much again or more. Some of the jumps among the hotels in our showcase were large: Cristalino rose from about $162 in mid-December to about $416 on New Year's Eve, and Puerta del Cielo from about $197 to $311. Before December 18, rates were steady.
With the dry season starting, a lagoon-front hotel with its own dock is at its best in December. Town hotels cost less and some hold their rates over the holidays: Gran Jaguar stayed between $66 and $80 on the December nights it had rooms, though it was full on several holiday nights. Our guide to the best hotels in Bacalar ranks 12 options on both sides.

Bacalar Weather in December: The Dry Season Begins
| Metric | December |
|---|---|
| Avg High | 29.5–30°C (85–86°F) |
| Avg Low | 19–20°C (66–68°F) |
| Lagoon Water Temp | ~24°C (75°F), estimate |
| Rain Days | ~7–10 (mostly light) |
| Humidity | Moderate |
| Wind | Calm mornings; strong on norte days |
| Hurricane Risk | None (season runs June–November) |
There is no long-term weather station in Bacalar itself. Temperatures and rain here come from the 1991 to 2020 normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional at Chetumal, about 22 km south on the same coast, and Chacchoben, about 35 km north and further inland. We found no official lagoon temperature series; climate guides put the water around 24°C in December.
Temperature and Humidity
December brings the coolest weather since the spring. Afternoon highs reach about 29.5 to 30°C (85 to 86°F) at the three stations, and nights drop to about 19°C (66°F) inland at Chacchoben and 20°C (68°F) on the coast at Chetumal. Humidity eases, and mornings on the water feel fresh enough for a light layer, as they will through January.
Rain Pattern
December marks the start of the dry season. The normals give 35 to 66 mm on about 7 to 10 days, about half November's total, mostly as short showers that often come with a passing front.
Lagoon Conditions
Clear days return and with them the lagoon's colours at full strength. Mornings are usually calm. Cold fronts, known locally as nortes, can bring a day or two of north wind, cloud and cooler air; on those days the open lagoon gets choppy and the blues flatten. The sun sets early, at about 6:15 pm in early December and 6:27 pm by New Year's Eve, and rises late, at about 7:09 to 7:25 am.
Crowds and Prices in December: Week by Week
We priced the same 21 hotels for every night from November 30, 2026 to January 3, 2027, and compared each with its own rate for December 1 to 10.
- December 1 to 17: steady. The typical hotel charged its early-December rate every night, with a few hotels adding a little on Friday and Saturday nights. The median was about $149 to $156.
- December 18 to 22: the rise begins. By Saturday December 19, 11 of the 21 hotels charged more than in early December, and by December 22, 13 did.
- Christmas (December 23 to 27): the first peak. On Christmas Eve the typical hotel charged about 36% more than in early December, and on Christmas Day about 54% more; 16 of 20 hotels charged more.
- New Year (December 28 to January 2): the second peak. On New Year's Eve the typical hotel charged about 58% more than in early December, and January 1 and 2 were about 50% higher. Rates eased from January 3.
Availability tightens too: when we checked in October, about a quarter fewer hotels quoted rooms for December 25 to January 2 than for early December. Mexico's school winter break, as reported from the SEP calendar, runs from December 21 to January 6. Tours are the exception to the holiday pricing: every tour on our shortlist kept its usual price on the Christmas and New Year dates we checked, and ViveSUP's paddle was still on sale at about $36 per person in early December before returning to about $52.
The Dry Season Returns: Clear Water, Cool Mornings and Early Sunsets
December's draw is the return of the dry season after six months of rain, with the first half of the month still quiet.
Colours back at full strength
With fewer rainy days and more sun, the lagoon's bands of turquoise and deep blue are visible again on most days. Morning boats and paddles get the calmest water; afternoon breezes return with the dry-season pattern.
Sunset tours
The sun sets at about 6:15 pm in early December, the earliest of the year, and about 6:27 pm on New Year's Eve, so a 3 pm departure ends in golden light and the private pontoon's four-hour sunset tour finishes after dark. December guests on the private sunset tour describe "good drinks and snacks", their own music and the lagoon's colours before the light went.
Cool, green jungle
After the rains, the jungle around Ichkabal is green and the weather is cool enough for an easy climb. Mehran's Ichkabal and Los Rápidos day runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday with hotel pickup, and had open dates on the December 2026 days we checked.
Christmas, New Year and the First Cold Fronts
Risk level: moderate, mostly for price and availability. December's weather is generally kind; the challenge is the holiday fortnight.
- Holiday rates: from about December 19, most hotels in our sample raised their rates, by half or more over Christmas and New Year. Compare several hotels: a few, like Gran Jaguar ($66 to $80), barely moved.
- Availability: about a quarter fewer hotels had rooms for the holiday nights when we checked in October. Book early.
- Cold fronts: a few times a month, a norte brings wind, cloud and cooler air for a day or two. Keep a flexible day for your most important lagoon tour.
- Cool mornings: bring a light layer for sunrise paddles and 8 am boats.
We think the holidays are still worth it for families with fixed dates, provided rooms are booked early; everyone else gets the same dry-season lagoon for far less in the first half of the month.

Private pontoon: December's pick
DayTour Bacalar's Bacalar 101 is a private three-hour pontoon tour of the lagoon's main stops, rated 4.96 across 1,137 reviews. It is priced per boat: $215 at 8 am, $259 at 11 am or 3 pm and $308 for the four-hour sunset tour, the same for two people as for six. That price did not change over Christmas or New Year 2026 in our checks, which makes it the easiest way for a holiday group to keep costs predictable, and with sunset around 6:15 to 6:27 pm the sunset tour is at its best in December. It includes a bilingual guide, beers, water and snacks, but not towels, and it does not run on Wednesdays. Our Bacalar boat tours guide compares it with the shared boats and sailboats.
Sunrise paddle and shared sail
ViveSUP's sunrise route through the Pirates' Channel to the quieter lagoons beyond, rated 4.99 across 699 reviews, was about $36 per person on early-December 2026 dates and about $52 from mid-December. Wild Wave's shared sail is about $45 per person at 11 am and 3 pm. Our Bacalar paddleboard and kayak guide compares the paddles.
Ichkabal and Los Rápidos
Mehran's small-group day runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8 am with hotel pickup, about $70 for the Ichkabal visit or about $122 for the full day with Los Rápidos. December's cool, green conditions make it one of the best months for it.
More December Activities Worth Knowing About
We do not have dedicated guides for these yet, but they fit a December trip well:
- Cenote Azul: a very deep, round cenote on the southern edge of town with a restaurant on its rim; best in the warmest part of the day.
- Fuerte de San Felipe: the 18th-century fort above the lagoon in the centre of town, with a small museum about the pirates who raided the area.
- Los Rápidos on your own: the river channel south of town where you float with the current past stromatolites; busier over the holidays, so go early.
- Calakmul day trip: the great Maya city in the Campeche jungle is a very long day from Bacalar, and December's cool weather makes it one of the better months to try.
- Floating yoga: Amir AdvenTours runs a 6 am class on a floating platform for about $25. It has only 16 reviews and the newest is from June 2026, so read recent feedback before booking.
Our Take
December splits cleanly in two. In our sample the typical hotel charged the same on December 15 as on December 5, and about half as much again from Christmas Eve, while tours kept their usual prices throughout, so the first half of the month is the best-value dry-season fortnight of the year.
Tips for Visiting Bacalar in December
- Go before December 18 if you can. Hotel rates in our sample were flat to mid-month and rose by half or more over the holidays.
- Book holiday rooms early. About a quarter fewer hotels had rooms for Christmas to New Year when we checked in October.
- Compare hotels over the holidays. A few, like Gran Jaguar ($66 to $80), barely moved while others doubled.

- Try a sunset tour. With sunset around 6:15 to 6:27 pm, the 3 pm boats and the four-hour private sunset tour end in golden light.

How We Put This Guide Together
Weather figures come from the 1991 to 2020 climate normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional for Chetumal and Chacchoben, the nearest official stations to Bacalar, and sunrise and sunset times are calculated for Bacalar's coordinates and time zone and checked against an online almanac. Hotel prices are live rates for the same 21 Bacalar hotels used in our January guide, priced for every night from November 30, 2026 to January 3, 2027, pulled on October 23, 2026, and compared hotel by hotel with their own rates for December 1 to 10. Tour prices, schedules and December availability, including Christmas Eve, December 26 and New Year's Eve, were checked against live booking data on the same day, and every tour here has guest reviews from the past six months except the floating yoga class, which we flag. School holiday dates are from press reports of Mexico's 2026 to 2027 SEP school calendar.
