We scored every hotel in Bacalar with a real review base, priced the best of them on six dates, and ranked the 12 that held up. Nine sit on the lagoon; three are in town from $60 a night.

What You Should Know

  • Bacalar has no sea beach. The draw is the freshwater lagoon, so the real choice is between a lagoon-front hotel with its own dock and a cheaper hotel in town a few blocks from the public swimming spots.
  • Nine of the 12 hotels ranked here are on the lagoon. The three in town (Gran Jaguar, AGAM and Casa Delia) cost $60 to $96 a night; the lagoon-front picks start at $61 for a guesthouse and run to $334.
  • Six of the 12 are adults-only by name or by their booking record. If you are travelling with children, the realistic shortlist is Rancho Encantado, Hotel Carolina, Agave-Blue, Gran Jaguar and Casa Delia.
  • Several of the best-known names in Bacalar, including Blue Palm, Casa Chukum, Bluebayou and Casa Hormiga, returned no bookable rates on any of our six sample dates, so they are not ranked here.
  • Every price on this page is for two adults before taxes, taken from live availability on six separate three-night stays between November 2026 and July 2027, and labelled with the meal plan it belongs to.

Hotels in Bacalar: What the Data Shows

Bacalar is a small lagoon town in southern Quintana Roo, and almost every good hotel here is small too. There are no big resorts and none of the hotels we ranked is all-inclusive. What there is instead is a long run of boutique hotels, guesthouses and bungalows strung along the lagoon shore north and south of town, plus a handful of simple, well-run hotels in the streets behind the main square.

Our booking partner lists 564 properties within 25 km of Bacalar. We kept the 104 in the lagoon area with at least 80 guest reviews, scored them with a weighted average that discounts thin review bases, read the most recent 40 reviews of each serious contender, and priced the shortlist on six separate three-night stays. Twelve came through every check.

The short version: Puerta del Cielo is the best-rated hotel in Bacalar at 9.8 across 568 reviews, adults-only, from $204 a night. Villa Marilu is the best-rated lagoon-front stay under $150, with breakfast. Gran Jaguar is the best value in town at $66 with breakfast and a 9.5. For families, Rancho Encantado is the strongest lagoon-front option that takes children.

Below are the picks by traveller type, a map, live prices for all 12, and an honest profile of each, including the recent complaints. Once you have a room, our guides to boat tours on Bacalar Lagoon and paddleboard and kayak tours cover what to do on the water, and our best things to do in Bacalar guide covers the rest of the trip, with a separate guide to Bacalar with kids for families.

Where to Stay in Bacalar: Lagoon Front or Town

The lagoon shore south of town (the Costera). This is where most of the best-rated hotels sit, along the Boulevard Costero that runs south from the center toward Cenote Azul. Villa Marilu and Hotel Carolina are about 1.5 km from the main square; Cristalino is a little further; Amainah and Amaranto are neighbours about 4 km out. Expect a private dock, kayaks or paddleboards for guests, and a taxi or bike ride into town for dinner. Guests at Carolina describe the walk in as about 15 minutes, which is manageable in the cool of the evening.

North of town, along Highway 307. Puerta del Cielo, Rancho Encantado and Agave-Blue are 3 to 6 km north on the lagoon. These are the quietest stays on the list and the most dependent on a car or taxi. One guest at Puerta del Cielo felt the lagoon looked less colourful at that end than further south; most of its 568 reviews single out the view as the best thing about it, so treat that as one opinion.

Far south, toward Los Rápidos. Our Habitas sits on its own about 8 km south of the square, closer to the Los Rápidos river channel than to town. Guests describe a jungle setting with direct lagoon access and a 15-minute drive into Bacalar.

In town. Gran Jaguar, AGAM and Casa Delia are all within about a kilometre of the main square, walkable to restaurants and to the public swimming spots and tour docks on the lagoon. None has its own lagoon frontage, which is most of the reason they cost $60 to $96 rather than $150 and up. AGAM gives guests free entry to two lagoon beach clubs, which closes much of that gap.

Most boat and paddle tours leave from docks in town, not from hotels, so a town hotel is no handicap for tours. Our Bacalar boat tours guide lists where each one departs.

Cheapest Good Hotels in Bacalar

Cheap does not mean poorly rated here. Four of the 12 hotels on this page cost under $100 a night for two, and every one of them scores 9.0 or higher with guests. Three are in town, within about a kilometre of the main square, so you can walk to restaurants, tour docks and the public swimming spots. Agave-Blue is the exception: a lagoon-front guesthouse with its own dock and free kayaks, but about 6 km north of town, so it only makes sense with a car.

For most budget travellers, Gran Jaguar is the pick: it has the highest score of the four and includes breakfast for $6 more than Casa Delia.

Bacalar Hotel Map

The map shows how the hotels split. The town hotels cluster within a kilometre of the main square. The lagoon-front picks run south along the Costera toward Cenote Azul and north along Highway 307, with Our Habitas on its own furthest south.

The 12 Best Hotels in Bacalar, Ranked

Ranked on a guest score weighted for how many reviews sit behind it, so a 9.6 on 132 reviews does not automatically beat a 9.2 on 1,135. The weighted score is shown so you can check the order.

ℹ️ Guest scores and review counts are our booking partner's own, out of 10. "Weighted" pulls each score toward a market average of 8.8 in proportion to how few reviews sit behind it. "Meal plan priced" is the cheapest plan that hotel returned on at least four of our six sample dates. "From" is the cheapest nightly rate on that plan across six three-night stays from November 2026 to July 2027; "peak" is the dearest of those dates. Two adults, before taxes and fees, verified 22 October 2026.

The 12 Hotels in Detail

1. Puerta del Cielo Hotel Origen: best-rated in Bacalar

A 9.8 across 568 reviews is the highest guest score of any hotel in Bacalar with a meaningful review base, and the newest reviews (into mid-October 2026) are still overwhelmingly tens. Guests come back again and again to the same thing: the view of the lagoon from the rooms and the panoramic terrace. It is adults-only, room-only at $204 to $232 a night, with a pool, a restaurant and bar, and canoes listed among the facilities.

The trade-off: it is about 3 km north of the main square on the road toward Xtomoc, so you will be taking taxis into town. A few recent guests wanted more space down at the water's edge and more on-site activities; one called the food the weak point.

2. Villa Marilu B&B: best lagoon-front value

A small B&B on the Costera, about 1.5 km south of the square, with a private dock, kayaks and breakfast served looking out over the lagoon. It holds a 9.7 on 243 reviews and the reviews from the past six months average 9.8, with none below a 7. At $148 a night with breakfast it is the cheapest of the higher-rated lagoon-front stays.

The trade-off: its description calls it adults-only while its booking record says children are accepted. If you are travelling with children, confirm with the hotel before you book.

3. Gran Jaguar Hotel: best value in town

A plain, very clean hotel in a quiet street about 800 metres from the square, with free parking, bike rental, garden seating and breakfast included. It priced at exactly $66 a night on all six of our dates, which is unusual, and holds a 9.5 on 383 reviews. Guests repeatedly mention the host's help booking lagoon tours.

The trade-off: no lagoon frontage and no pool. One recent guest found the room large but bare, with a leaking shower.

4. Cristalino Lagoon Front Hotel: the modern lagoon-front pick

A newer hotel on the Costera, about 2.4 km south of the square, with two pools above the lagoon and docks you can swim from. A 9.6 on 230 reviews, room-only at $164 to $191, which is low for what it offers.

The trade-off: its booking record says children are not accepted. Three critical reviews from January 2026 complained of a compulsory New Year's Eve dinner charge, misted windows in one room type and limited English in the restaurant; reviews from the past six months average 9.5. If you are booking around New Year, ask about holiday supplements first.

5. AGAM Hotel Boutique: most reviewed, adults-only in town

With 1,135 reviews, AGAM has the deepest review base on this page, which is why a 9.2 ranks this high. It is adults-only, five to ten minutes' walk from the square, with a pool and breakfast included from $96. Guests get free entry to two lagoon beach clubs, so you can still swim off a dock during the day.

The trade-off: the recent reviews are weaker than the headline. The last six months average 8.4, and complaints include street noise, a cloudy pool, a windowless bathroom and, in one October 2026 review, mould in an upgraded room.

6. Hotel Amainah: adults-only on the southern lagoon

On the Boulevard Costero about 4 km south of the square, next door to Amaranto. Rooms and the pool face the lagoon, and guests can use the hotel's paddleboards and kayaks. A 9.5 on 230 reviews, room-only from $254.

The trade-off: one July 2026 guest reported children staying despite the adults-only name, and its facility list includes kids' meals, so if a strictly adults-only stay matters, check before you book. Other critical reviews mention noise and upselling.

7. Our Habitas Bacalar: the jungle retreat

About 8 km south of the square, Habitas is a set of cabins in the jungle with direct access to the lagoon and paddleboards for guests. Adults-only, a 9.3 on 450 reviews, room-only from $225 (breakfast rates from $266). Guests describe it as the place to disconnect, and note that the Los Rápidos river channel is close.

The trade-off: it is the most isolated hotel here, about 15 minutes' drive from town, and it priced on only four of our six dates. One recent guest felt the price was high for what it delivered.

8. Amaranto Bacalar Hotel Boutique: the priciest

A new-feeling boutique hotel beside Amainah with its own dock, free kayaks and paddleboards, and breakfast included. A 9.6 on 132 reviews, from $334, the most expensive hotel on this page.

The trade-off: the 132 reviews are the thinnest base in the top 12, and the last six months average 8.8, with a handful of low scores and one broken in-room jacuzzi. It is non-smoking everywhere, including the garden and jetty, and its booking record says no children.

9. Hotel Rancho Encantado: best for families

Bungalows spread through tropical gardens on the lagoon at km 24 of Highway 307, about 4.6 km north of the square. Some rooms have their own dock or step straight into the water, and guests can take out kayaks and paddleboards. It accepts children and holds a 9.2 on 401 reviews. Room-only from $166, rising to $278 on our dearest date.

The trade-off: several recent guests call the rooms dated and the restaurant pricey for the area, and one group of four found two adults sleeping on a sofa bed.

10. Hotel Carolina Bacalar: lagoon front with a kids' pool

On the Costera about 1.4 km south of the square (guests put the walk at about 15 minutes), with a dock, a restaurant at the water's edge, kayaks and paddleboards, and a kids' pool. A 9.0 on 345 reviews, from $209 with breakfast.

The trade-off: the hotel is on a slope, and the lagoon-view rooms are next to the bar, pool and restaurant, so one guest found them loud. Others mention music from a neighbouring venue and boat traffic from the dock next door.

11. Agave-Blue: cheapest on the lagoon

A small guesthouse at km 24.9 north of town, about 6 km from the square, with a private dock, hammocks, free kayaks and paddleboards, and rooms with kitchens. A 9.2 on 86 reviews, room-only from $61. Lagoon access comes up in more than half of its recent reviews.

The trade-off: you need a car or taxi for everything. One guest found the rooms dated, and one April 2026 guest reported a refund dispute with management.

12. Casa Delia Hotel Downtown: cheapest on the page

A quiet in-town hotel with a pool and garden, about ten minutes' walk from the square, a 9.0 on 231 reviews, room-only from $60. Reviewers mention attentive staff and parking in the courtyard.

The trade-off: rooms are simple, one family felt the neighbourhood looked a little rough, and one mentioned a drain smell in the bathrooms.

Adults-Only and Family Hotels in Bacalar

Bacalar leans adults-only. Six of the 12 hotels on this page are adults-only by name or by their booking record: Puerta del Cielo, AGAM, Amainah, Our Habitas, Cristalino and Amaranto. Villa Marilu's description also says adults-only, although its booking record accepts children.

For families, five hotels here accept children: Rancho Encantado and Hotel Carolina on the lagoon (Carolina has a kids' pool), Agave-Blue as the budget lagoon option with kitchens, and Gran Jaguar and Casa Delia in town. Booking records are a third-party cross-check rather than the hotel's own policy, so confirm the child policy directly before booking either way.

How Much Does a Hotel in Bacalar Cost?

Across the 12 hotels on this page, nightly rates for two adults ran from $60 to $334 before taxes. Lagoon frontage and distance from town explain most of that spread.

$60–$96Town and budget

The cheapest good rooms

Casa Delia at $60, Agave-Blue at $61 (on the lagoon, north of town), Gran Jaguar at $66 with breakfast and AGAM at $96 with breakfast. All four score 9.0 or higher.

$148–$209Lagoon front

Where most people land

Villa Marilu at $148 with breakfast, Cristalino at $164, Rancho Encantado at $166 and Hotel Carolina at $209 with breakfast. Each has its own dock or direct lagoon access.

$204–$334Top end

Adults-only and boutique

Puerta del Cielo at $204, Our Habitas at $225, Amainah at $254 and Amaranto at $334. The best-rated of the four, Puerta del Cielo, is also the cheapest.

Every figure excludes taxes and fees, added at checkout. Breakfast is included only where the ranking table says so; none of the 12 sells an all-inclusive rate.

Our Take

What surprised us is how little you have to pay for a very good hotel here. Three of the twelve cost under $70 a night and score 9.0 or higher, and the best-rated hotel in Bacalar is the cheapest of the four in the top-end bracket. The extra money buys lagoon frontage and a quiet setting out of town, not a better guest score.

Tips for Booking a Hotel in Bacalar

  • Decide on lagoon front first. It is the single biggest driver of price here. A town hotel plus a beach-club day costs far less than a lagoon-front room, and the swimming is the same water.
  • Check the child policy. Half the top 12 are adults-only, and booking records do not always match the hotel's own description. Confirm directly if you are travelling with children.
  • Plan your transport. Puerta del Cielo, Rancho Encantado, Agave-Blue and Our Habitas are 3 to 8 km from town. Budget for taxis, or stay in town or on the near Costera if you will not have a car.
  • Read the recent reviews, not the headline. AGAM's 9.2 sits on 1,135 reviews, but its last six months average 8.4. Villa Marilu's last six months average 9.8.
  • Use the hotel's kayaks. Most lagoon-front hotels here lend kayaks or paddleboards free, which covers a short paddle without a tour. For a guided sunrise paddle, see our Bacalar paddleboard and kayak guide.
  • Ask about holiday supplements. One hotel here charged guests a compulsory New Year's Eve dinner on top of the room; ask before booking around Christmas and New Year.
  • Visiting in January? Our Bacalar in January guide tracks hotel rates night by night: about $166 on New Year's Eve, then roughly $133 from January 4 to the end of the month.
  • Booking over Easter? Our Bacalar in March guide tracked hotel rates night by night through Semana Santa: about half the hotels raised prices by 7% to 82%, the rest kept their normal rate.
  • Visiting in April? Our Bacalar in April guide found most hotels held their dry-season rate after Easter, while a few lagoon-front hotels, Cristalino among them, cut prices by 15% to 25%.
  • Visiting in June? Our Bacalar in June guide found hotel rates flat at dry-season levels or below for every June night, then a jump from July 1.
  • Visiting in August? Our Bacalar in August guide found summer rates at almost every hotel to mid-August, and a third of the hotels charging less than in July in the last week.
  • Visiting in September? Our Bacalar in September guide found rates flat every night, a few lagoon-front hotels at their lowest of the year, and fewer hotels quoting rooms than in spring.
  • Visiting in October? Our Bacalar in October guide found short-notice late-October rates about 17% below the same hotels' spring prices, with a step up from November 1.
  • Visiting in November? Our Bacalar in November guide found most nights close to spring rates, but more than half the hotels charging more over the Revolution Day long weekend.
  • Skip sunscreen in the lagoon. Many hotels and tour operators ask guests not to wear sunscreen in the water to protect the lagoon; a rash guard works better.

How We Rated These Hotels

We started from the 564 properties our booking partner lists within 25 km of Bacalar and kept the 104 in the lagoon area (excluding Chetumal) with at least 80 guest reviews. We scored those with a weighted average that pulls a rating toward the market mean in proportion to how thin its review base is, which is why a 9.2 on 1,135 reviews can outrank a 9.6 on 132.

Then we priced them, and recorded the meal plan. Each candidate was quoted on six separate three-night stays between November 2026 and July 2027. We kept only hotels that returned a bookable rate on at least four of the six. This is why several well-known names are missing: Blue Palm, Casa Chukum, Bluebayou, Casa Hormiga, BOA BOA and Hotel My Love all score well but returned no rates on any of our dates.

Then we read the recent reviews. For each contender we read the newest 40 reviews and checked for theft, safety or closure reports; we found none among the final 12. We dropped hotels whose recent reviews had fallen well below their headline score: Mia Bacalar Luxury Resort, Royal Palm Bacalar, Hotel CasaBakal and Hotel Makaabá. We also dropped La Galuna, which had no reviews in the past twelve months, and Casa Cactus in Buenavista, which is 28 km north of town.

Every price, guest score and review count was verified against live data on 22 October 2026. We have not stayed at these hotels: this is booking data we pulled and checked, guest reviews we read, and our own judgement about what the numbers mean.

Stay on the lagoon if you want to swim off your own dock and you have a car or are happy to use taxis; lagoon-front rooms on this page start at $61 and most cost $148 to $254. Stay in town if you want to walk to restaurants and tour docks and keep costs down: Gran Jaguar, AGAM and Casa Delia cost $60 to $96 and all score 9.0 or higher.

How much does a hotel in Bacalar cost per night?+

Across the 12 hotels we ranked, from $60 to $334 a night for two adults before taxes, on six sample stays between November 2026 and July 2027. Town hotels run $60 to $96, most lagoon-front hotels $148 to $209, and the adults-only and boutique top end $204 to $334.

What are the best cheap hotels in Bacalar?+

Four well-rated hotels cost under $100 a night for two before taxes: Casa Delia from $60 and Gran Jaguar from $66 (with breakfast) in town, Agave-Blue from $61 on the lagoon about 6 km north, and adults-only AGAM from $96 with breakfast, also in town. All four score 9.0 or higher; Gran Jaguar is the highest at 9.5.

Are there all-inclusive resorts in Bacalar?+

Not among the hotels we ranked. Bacalar's best-rated hotels are small boutique properties, B&Bs and guesthouses, and the rates we found were either room-only or included breakfast. If you want a large all-inclusive, the resorts are on the Riviera Maya coast to the north.

Which Bacalar hotels are good for families?+

Five of the 12 hotels we ranked accept children: Hotel Rancho Encantado and Hotel Carolina on the lagoon (Carolina has a kids' pool), Agave-Blue as a budget lagoon-front guesthouse with kitchens, and Gran Jaguar and Casa Delia in town. Six of the 12 are adults-only, so check the policy before you book.

What are the best adults-only hotels in Bacalar?+

Puerta del Cielo is the best-rated at 9.8 from $204. AGAM is the best value at 9.2 on 1,135 reviews from $96 with breakfast, in town. On the lagoon, Cristalino (9.6, from $164), Hotel Amainah (9.5, from $254) and Our Habitas (9.3, from $225) are the other strong options.

Which hotels in Bacalar have a private dock?+

Among our 12, guests describe a dock or direct lagoon access at Villa Marilu, Cristalino, Amaranto, Hotel Carolina, Rancho Encantado, Agave-Blue, Amainah and Our Habitas, and lagoon views from Puerta del Cielo. Most of these also lend kayaks or paddleboards to guests.

Why aren't Casa Chukum or Blue Palm on this list?+

Both score well with guests, but neither returned a bookable rate through our booking partner on any of our six sample dates, and we only rank hotels we could verify live prices for. Bluebayou, Casa Hormiga, BOA BOA and Hotel My Love were left out for the same reason.
