January is dry-season Bacalar: warm afternoons, cool mornings, quiet water most days and the latest sunrises of the year. The catches are the New Year price peak, which ends on January 4 in our hotel sample, and the odd cold front that brings wind, cloud and a choppy lagoon for a day or two.
What You Should Know
- January is one of Bacalar's most comfortable months: afternoons around 29°C (84°F), mornings around 18 to 19°C (64 to 67°F) and little rain. Bring a warm layer for sunrise tours; several January guests mention being cold on the water.
- Prices peak over New Year and drop on January 4. Across 24 hotels we priced for every night from December 31 to January 31, the median room fell from $166 on New Year's Eve to $134 on the 4th and stayed between $132 and $137 to the end of the month.
- The tradeoff is cold fronts (nortes). A few times a month they bring wind, cloud and chop for a day or two. That dulls the lagoon's colours and can hide the sunrise, but the same wind is what lets the sailboats sail instead of motoring.
- January has the latest sunrises of the year: 7:26 to 7:29 am, with the very latest around January 19. Sunrise paddles still meet in the dark (ViveSUP lists 5 am), so you paddle by lamplight first. Keep a flexible day in your plan to swap a tour if a front arrives.
Bacalar in January: The Honest Picture
⭐ Best January window: January 4 to 31. In our sample the New Year hotel premium is gone by January 4 and rates stay flat for the rest of the month. Mexico's national school calendar has no classes until January 6, so the first few days of that window may still feel busier with Mexican families. Leave one spare day in any January plan in case a cold front blows through.

Yes, Bacalar is very good in January, and for most travellers the second half of the month is better still. It is the heart of the dry season: warm, mostly sunny afternoons, cool mornings and evenings, and a lagoon that is calm enough for paddling on most days. Bacalar has no sea beach, so the weather questions that matter here are about the lagoon itself: will the water be calm, will the sun be out to light up the blues, and will the wind cooperate with your boat.
The one thing to plan around is cold fronts, known locally as nortes. They sweep down from the Gulf of Mexico a few times a month in winter and bring a day or two of wind, cloud and cooler air. On those days the lagoon turns choppy and grey-blue, sunrise can disappear behind mist, and a shared sail feels livelier than usual. Most guests find the fronts pass quickly. What typically happens is a breezy, cloudy day followed by clear, bright weather, which is why we would not book the one tour you care about most on your last morning.
In our view, January suits couples, slow travellers and anyone combining Bacalar with a Riviera Maya trip who wants warm weather without summer heat. It is less ideal if your dates fall over New Year, when rooms run about 25% above the rest of the month in our sample, or if you only have one day and need guaranteed sun for photos. If that is you, a few days later in the month gives you more chances.
Where to Stay on a January Trip to Bacalar
Book early if your dates touch New Year: the first days of January carry the holiday premium, and many of the best lagoon-front hotels are small. From January 4 prices in our sample flatten out for the rest of the month.
The big choice is lagoon front or town. Lagoon-front hotels along the Costera south of town and Highway 307 north of it have their own docks and often lend kayaks, which is a real advantage on calm January mornings. Town hotels cost less and put you a short walk from restaurants and the tour docks. Our guide to the best hotels in Bacalar ranks 12 options on both sides.

Bacalar Weather in January: Temperature, Rain and Cold Fronts
| Metric | January |
|---|---|
| Avg High | 29°C (84°F) |
| Avg Low | 18–19°C (64–67°F) |
| Lagoon Water Temp | ~24°C (75°F), estimate |
| Rain Days | ~6–9 (mostly light) |
| Humidity | Moderate |
| Wind | Low to moderate; strong on norte days |
| Hurricane Risk | None (season runs June–November) |
There is no long-term weather station in Bacalar itself. Temperatures and rain here come from the 1991 to 2020 normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional at Chetumal, about 22 km south on the same coast, and Chacchoben, about 35 km north and further inland. Bacalar sits between the two. We found no official lagoon temperature series; climate guides put the water around 24°C in January.
Temperature and Humidity
January is Bacalar's coolest month, which in practice means pleasant rather than cold. Afternoons reach about 29°C (84°F) at both stations, and nights drop to about 18°C (64°F) inland at Chacchoben and 19°C (67°F) on the coast at Chetumal. The humidity is noticeably lower than in summer, so a midday walk around the San Felipe fort or a climb at Ichkabal is comfortable. Mornings are the surprise: several January guests on sunrise tours describe being cold on the water, and one ViveSUP guide lent a jacket to a two-year-old. Pack a long-sleeved layer and long trousers for anything that starts before dawn.
Rain Pattern
January is dry season, but it is the wettest month of it. The normals give 33 to 74 mm of rain on 6 to 9 days, against 15 to 31 mm on about 3 days in March. Most of it falls as short showers, often with a passing front. Two guests on a January 2026 private sailboat trip had heavy rain at the start of their tour that cleared, which is the typical pattern: rarely a washed-out day, more often a wet hour.
Lagoon Conditions
On a normal January day the lagoon is calm in the morning and picks up a breeze in the afternoon. The colours that give Bacalar its "lagoon of seven colours" name need sunlight to show, so the blues are at their best on clear days and look flatter under cloud. Cold-front days are the exception: wind can raise real chop. A solo paddler in late January 2026 crossed in the dark in what his guide called the strongest wind and biggest waves he had seen, and still finished the route. The water is cooler than summer but swimmable for most people; a rash guard helps on breezy days.
Crowds and Prices in January: Week by Week
We priced the same 24 hotels for every night from December 31, 2026 to January 31, 2027. The pattern is simple: a short holiday peak, then a flat month.
- New Year (Dec 31 to Jan 3): the most expensive stretch. The median room ran $166 on New Year's Eve, $160 on January 1 and about $150 on the 2nd and 3rd.
- January 4: the drop. The median fell to $134 on Monday January 4, right after the New Year weekend.
- Jan 4 to 31: the value window. The median stayed between $132 and $137 every night, weekends included, so a Saturday cost no more than a Wednesday. The lagoon tours run daily (some skip Wednesdays) and are easy to book a few days ahead.
School holidays overlap the start of the month: Mexico's 2026 to 2027 national school calendar, as reported from the official SEP agreement, has no classes from December 21 to January 6. In our sample hotel rates had already dropped by January 4, so the holiday may keep the lagoon busier for a few more days without showing up in room prices. Quintana Roo can adjust the calendar for its own schools.
Most people don't realize how small the gap is between January and the rest of the dry season here: an early-February spot check of the same hotels came out at about $133. In our view, the real saving in January is not a cheap month but avoiding the first three nights of it.
Dry Season on the Lagoon: Light, Colour and Late Sunrises
January is when Bacalar's lagoon looks most like the photos for the most days in a row: dry weather, plenty of sun and calm mornings. Three things make it a particularly good month on the water.
The latest sunrise of the year
Quintana Roo keeps the same clock all year (UTC−5, no daylight saving), and Bacalar sits far west in that time zone, so sunrise in January comes between 7:26 and 7:29 am, with the latest of the whole year around January 19. The sky starts to lighten about 25 minutes earlier, and sunset moves from about 6:28 pm on January 1 to 6:46 pm on January 31. Sunrise tours still meet in the dark (ViveSUP lists 5 am, others meet around 6), so you paddle out by headlamp and reach the far lagoons as the sky lights up. Several January guests describe that crossing in the dark as part of the magic; others note that mist or cloud from a front hid the sun itself. We'd book the sunrise paddle early in your stay so a cloudy morning can be repeated.
Wind for the sailboats
The same breeze that ruffles the water is good news for sailing. January guests on Wild Wave's shared sailboat describe "a fairly windy day" when the boat heeled over and the crew sailed without the motor, and one family in January 2026 had too little wind to sail and visited three cenotes instead. We like the sail for a breezy afternoon; on a dead-calm day, the boat tour with cenote stops gives you more swimming for less money.
The coolest month for the ruins
The Ichkabal Maya site, deep in the jungle west of town, is a hot climb for most of the year. In January, guests describe a peaceful drive in, monkeys in the trees and sweeping views over the canopy from the top, with the afternoon spent floating at Los Rápidos. It is the one Bacalar tour we would schedule for a cloudy front day, since the colours of the lagoon do not matter there.
Cold Fronts (Nortes): What They Do to a January Trip
Risk level: moderate, and short-lived. Cold fronts reach the Yucatán Peninsula a few times a month between roughly November and March. In Bacalar a front typically means one or two days of north wind, cloud, cooler air and perhaps a shower, followed by clear weather.
- On the water: chop on the open lagoon, especially in the afternoon. Paddle routes through the Pirates' Channel and the smaller lagoons beyond it are more sheltered than the open crossing. Operators decide on the day; ask what happens if they cancel, since the standard policy here is a full refund up to 24 hours before.
- Colours and photos: cloud flattens the blues. If photos matter, keep your boat tour for a clear day.
- Comfort: mornings can feel properly cold on the water, and one January guest at the floating yoga class found it cloudy, windy and cold enough to want a jumper and trousers.
Alternatives on a front day: the Ichkabal ruins, the San Felipe fort and its pirate museum in town, Cenote Azul, or a long lunch on a lagoon-front deck. We think the tradeoff is worth it: a front costs you a day, not a trip, provided you leave room to move things around.

Sunrise paddle: January's pick
ViveSUP's sunrise route through the Pirates' Channel into Laguna Mariscal and the mangroves is the best-rated paddle tour in Bacalar, at 4.99 across 697 reviews, and January is one of its busiest months for reviews. It costs about $52 per person on January 2027 dates (949 MXN), with breakfast, coffee, a short sound-bowl meditation and GoPro photos. It runs every day except Wednesday. We'd book this if you want one quiet, memorable morning on the lagoon; our Bacalar paddleboard and kayak guide compares it with seven other paddles.
Ichkabal and Los Rápidos
Mehran's small-group day runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8 am with hotel pickup: about $70 per person for the four-hour Ichkabal visit with breakfast, or about $122 for the full eight-hour day that adds an afternoon floating at Los Rápidos. Entrance fees, a life jacket and snorkel mask are included. In our view this is the best use of a cloudy January day.
Boat tours on the lagoon
DayTour Bacalar's three-hour boat tour visits the stromatolites, a cenote, the Pirates' Channel and Bird Island, from $29 at 8 am or $39 at 11 am and 3 pm in January. Wild Wave's shared sail costs about $45 per person on January 2027 dates and runs at 11 am and 3 pm. For a group, the private Bacalar 101 pontoon is priced per boat: $215 for up to six people at 8 am, $259 at 11 am or 3 pm. DayTour's boats do not run on Wednesdays. Our Bacalar boat tours guide compares all of them in detail.
More January Activities Worth Knowing About
We do not have dedicated guides for these yet, but they fit a January trip well:
- Cenote Azul: a very deep, round cenote on the southern edge of town with a restaurant on its rim. Its open water is a good swim on a breezy day when the lagoon is choppy.
- Fuerte de San Felipe: the 18th-century fort above the lagoon in the centre of town, with a small museum about the pirates who raided the area. A comfortable afternoon walk in January.
- Los Rápidos on your own: the river channel south of town where you float with the current past stromatolites. The water feels cooler in January, so pick a sunny afternoon.
- Calakmul day trip: the great Maya city in the Campeche jungle is a very long day from Bacalar, but January's cooler weather makes the walking easier.
- Floating yoga: Amir AdvenTours runs a 6 am class on a floating platform for about $25. It has only 16 reviews and the newest is from June 2026, so read recent feedback before booking.
- Sunset from a lagoon club: with sunset between about 6:28 and 6:46 pm, an evening drink on a dock in town is an easy end to the day.
Our Take
The thing most January visitors underestimate is the cold at dawn, not the heat at noon. The tours that make Bacalar special start in the dark, on open water, in the coolest month of the year, and a long-sleeved layer does more for your morning than any amount of sunscreen.
Tips for Visiting Bacalar in January
- Avoid the first days of the month if you can. In our sample, the median room fell from $166 on New Year's Eve to $134 on January 4, and stayed there.
- Keep one flexible day. A cold front can bring a windy, cloudy day or two. Put your most important lagoon tour early in the trip so it can move.
- Dress for the dawn. Long sleeves, long trousers and a light windproof layer for sunrise paddles and yoga; you will shed them by 9 am.
- Check the weekday. ViveSUP, DayTour Bacalar and several other operators skip Wednesdays, and the Ichkabal tour runs only Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
- Save Ichkabal for a cloudy day. It is the one big outing that does not depend on sunshine on the lagoon.
- Skip sunscreen in the water. Operators and lagoon-front hotels ask swimmers not to wear it to protect the stromatolites; a rash guard and hat work better.

Our Bacalar in December guide covers the start of the dry season and how hotel rates climb toward New Year, our Bacalar in February guide covers the drier, steadier month that follows, with sailing breezes and flat hotel rates. How We Put This Guide Together
Weather figures come from the 1991 to 2020 climate normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional for Chetumal and Chacchoben, the nearest official stations to Bacalar, and sunrise and sunset times are calculated for Bacalar's coordinates and time zone and checked against an online almanac. Hotel prices are live rates for the same 24 Bacalar hotels on every night from December 31, 2026 to January 31, 2027, pulled on October 22, 2026. Tour prices, schedules and January availability were checked against live booking data on the same day, and every tour here has guest reviews from the past six months except the floating yoga class, which we flag. The weather and conditions details come from reading January reviews of each tour, including the critical ones. School holiday dates are from press reports of Mexico's 2026 to 2027 SEP school calendar (Agreement 07/07/26); we could not read the calendar annex itself, and Quintana Roo can adjust dates for its own schools.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Bacalar good in January?+
Yes. January is dry season, with afternoons around 29°C (84°F), cool mornings and calm water most days. The main catches are New Year prices, which ease from January 4 in our sample, and the occasional cold front that brings a windy, cloudy day or two.
What is the weather like in Bacalar in January?+
Highs average about 29°C (84°F) and lows 18 to 19°C (64 to 67°F), based on the official 1991 to 2020 normals for Chetumal and Chacchoben. Expect 6 to 9 days with some rain, mostly short showers, and cool, sometimes misty mornings on the lagoon.
Can you swim in Bacalar Lagoon in January?+
Yes. The water is cooler than in summer, around 24°C (75°F) by climate-guide estimates, but most people swim comfortably in the afternoon. Mornings and cold-front days feel chilly out of the water, so bring a towel and a warm layer on boat and paddle tours.
Do cold fronts affect Bacalar in January?+
Sometimes. A few times a month a norte brings north wind, cloud and cooler air for a day or two. The lagoon gets choppy and the colours look flatter, and sunrise can be hidden by mist. Tours usually still run, and the weather typically clears quickly afterwards.
Is January expensive in Bacalar?+
Only at the start. Across 24 hotels priced for every night of the month, the median room cost $166 on New Year's Eve and $160 on January 1, then $132 to $137 every night from January 4 to January 31, about the same as early February.
What is the best week to visit Bacalar in January?+
Any time from January 4, when hotel rates in our sample drop back and stay flat to the end of the month, weekends included. Mexico's national school calendar has no classes until January 6, so the lagoon may stay a little busier with Mexican families for a few more days.
What are the best things to do in Bacalar in January?+
A sunrise paddle through the Pirates' Channel, a boat or sailboat tour on a sunny day, and the Ichkabal ruins with an afternoon at Los Rápidos, which is at its most comfortable in January's cooler weather. Cenote Azul and the San Felipe fort make good cloudy-day options.
What time is sunrise in Bacalar in January?+
Between 7:26 and 7:29 am, the latest sunrises of the year (the very latest is around January 19), with sunset moving from about 6:28 pm to 6:46 pm across the month. Sunrise tours still meet in the dark, often between 5 and 6 am, so you reach the far side of the lagoon as the sky lights up.
