February is the driest, steadiest stretch of Bacalar's winter: warmer afternoons than January, fewer rainy days, breezes that keep the sailboats sailing and hotel rates that hold flat all month. Dawn is still cool on the water, and the odd cold front still passes through.

What You Should Know

  • February is a little warmer and noticeably drier than January: afternoons of 30 to 31°C (86 to 87°F) and about 3 to 6 days with some rain, against 6 to 9 in January, by the official normals for the two nearest stations.
  • Hotel rates hold steady all month. Across 22 hotels we priced for every February night, 15 charged the same as in mid-January (within 2%), 6 were cheaper and 1 was dearer, and Valentine's weekend carried no premium for the typical hotel.
  • Dawns are still cool. A February 2026 guest on a 6 am paddle put the temperature at 13 to 14°C (55 to 57°F), and a boat-tour guest advised bringing something warm and a big towel if a front is around.
  • The breeze that comes with the dry season is what makes February good for sailing. Book the shared sailboat for an afternoon; on the rare dead-calm day the crew motors instead, so check the forecast and keep a flexible day.

Bacalar in February: The Honest Picture

⭐ Best February window: any week, with a slight edge to February 2 to 28. Hotel rates in our sample are flat across the month, with no premium for Valentine's weekend. The only small bump was the Constitution Day long weekend (Saturday January 30 to Monday February 1), and even that was modest.

💰 Average February hotel prices (Bacalar, hotels with 80+ guest reviews):
Jan 30–31 (long weekend): ~$132/night · Feb 1: ~$127/night · Feb 2–18: ~$117/night · Feb 19–28: ~$115/night
Median live rate for the same 22 hotels, each priced for every night from 30 January to 1 March 2027, two adults, one night, cheapest meal plan, before taxes, pulled 22 October 2026. The same 22 hotels ran ~$125–134 in mid-January; with a sample this size the median jumps between neighbouring hotels, so the clearer measure is per hotel: 15 of 22 charged the same as in mid-January.

Yes, Bacalar is excellent in February, and for many travellers it is the best month of the winter. It keeps everything good about January (dry season, warm afternoons, a calm lagoon on most mornings) and adds a little more warmth, fewer rainy days and more clear afternoons to light up the blues that give the lagoon its "seven colours" name.

The weather pattern is steadier too. Cold fronts, known locally as nortes, still reach the Yucatán in February, but the official normals for the nearest stations show fewer rainy days than in January. When one does pass, expect a day of wind and cloud and a cool dawn rather than a ruined trip. What typically happens is a breezy, grey morning that clears by the afternoon boats.

In our view, February suits couples, slow travellers and anyone who wants the lagoon at its most reliable without the New Year premium. We'd give it the edge over January if your dates are flexible. It is less ideal only if you need guaranteed warm water at dawn: the lagoon is lovely by afternoon, but the first hour of a sunrise paddle can feel genuinely cold.

Where to Stay on a February Trip to Bacalar

February is easy for hotels: in our sample, rates barely move across the month, weekends included, so you can pick the hotel first and the dates second. The small lagoon-front places still fill early on popular weekends, so book ahead if you have your heart set on one.

Lagoon-front hotels along the Costera south of town and Highway 307 north of it have their own docks and often lend kayaks, which suits February's calm mornings. Town hotels cost less and put you a short walk from restaurants and the tour docks. Our guide to the best hotels in Bacalar ranks 12 options on both sides.

There is no long-term weather station in Bacalar itself. Temperatures and rain here come from the 1991 to 2020 normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional at Chetumal, about 22 km south on the same coast, and Chacchoben, about 35 km north and further inland. Bacalar sits between the two. We found no official lagoon temperature series; climate guides put the water around 25°C in February.

Temperature and Humidity

February warms up a degree or so on January. Afternoons reach 30 to 31°C (86 to 87°F) at the two stations, while nights still drop to about 18°C (64°F) inland at Chacchoben and 20 to 21°C (68 to 69°F) on the coast at Chetumal. Humidity stays comfortable. The cool part of the day is dawn on the water: one February 2026 paddler measured 13 to 14°C (55 to 57°F) at a 6 am start, and another guest on an 8 am private boat found it "a bit colder" but comfortable. Bring a long-sleeved layer for anything before 9 am.

Rain Pattern

February is drier than January. The normals give 19 to 35 mm of rain on 3 to 6 days, against 33 to 74 mm on 6 to 9 days in January. Rain usually comes with a passing front as a shower or two rather than a full wet day. A Wild Wave guest in February 2026 set off under cloud that looked threatening, had "a shower or two" and still called it a wonderful tour.

Lagoon Conditions

Mornings are usually calm, and a breeze builds through the afternoon, which is exactly what the sailboats want. Guests describe "fun tacking into the wind" on one February afternoon and calm wind with vivid colours on another. On front days the open lagoon gets choppy and the blues flatten under cloud, and one group on a private pontoon in February 2026 described "a day with a lot of wind" that was still very pleasant. The water is warm enough for most people to swim comfortably by late morning.

Crowds and Prices in February: Week by Week

We priced the same 22 hotels for every night from January 30 to March 1, 2027. February is the flattest month we have measured in Bacalar.

  • Constitution Day weekend (Sat Jan 30 to Mon Feb 1): Mexico's Constitution Day holiday falls on the first Monday of February, giving a long weekend. The median room was about $132 on the Saturday and Sunday and $127 on the Monday, the only small bump of the month.
  • Feb 2 to 18: about $117 every night, weekends included.
  • Valentine's weekend (Sat Feb 13 to Sun Feb 14): no premium for the typical hotel. The median was unchanged, and only 4 of 22 hotels charged more on the Saturday than on the Wednesday before.
  • Feb 19 to 28: about $115 every night.

Most people don't realize that February costs no more than mid-January here, even though the weather is drier. Comparing each hotel with itself, 15 of 22 charged the same as in mid-January (within 2%), 6 were cheaper (four by 14 to 23%) and only 1 was dearer. Apart from the Constitution Day Monday, February has no national school holidays, so the lagoon carries steady dry-season traffic without a holiday rush.

Dry Season at Its Steadiest: Sailing, Colour and Later Sunsets

February is the month when Bacalar's lagoon is most reliably at its best: dry weather, clear afternoons and a breeze that does not usually tip into a gale. Three things make it a particularly good month on the water.

Sailing weather

A sailboat needs wind, and February's afternoon breeze usually provides it without the chop of a front. Wild Wave's guests in February describe sailing rather than motoring, tacking into the wind, and the quiet of a boat with no engine compared with the noisy motorboats elsewhere on the lagoon. One February 2025 group that had the boat to themselves sailed south, where there were fewer tours. We like the 3 pm departure for the warmest water and the softest light.

More clear days for the colours

The lagoon's famous bands of turquoise and deep blue need sunshine to show. With fewer rainy days than January and more clear afternoons, February gives you the best odds of seeing them at full strength from a boat or a dock.

Later sunsets, still-late sunrises

Sunset moves from about 6:47 pm on February 1 to 6:59 pm on February 28, so a 3 pm sail now finishes well before dark. Sunrise comes earlier through the month, from about 7:27 am to 7:13 am, so sunrise paddles still meet in the dark (ViveSUP lists 5 am) and reach the far lagoons as the sky lights up. February 2026 guests describe paddling under the moon and stars before the mangroves woke up.

Cold Fronts and Cool Dawns: What Can Still Go Wrong in February

Risk level: low to moderate, and short-lived. Cold fronts can still reach the Yucatán Peninsula in February. In Bacalar a front typically means a day of north wind, cloud, cooler air and perhaps a shower, followed by clear weather.

  • On the water: chop on the open lagoon on front days, especially in the afternoon. The paddle routes through the Pirates' Channel and the smaller lagoons beyond it are more sheltered. The standard policy on these tours is a full refund up to 24 hours before.
  • Cool dawns: early starts can be properly cold, with one guest reporting 13 to 14°C at 6 am. A February 2026 boat-tour guest's advice: "If there is any chance of cold weather bring something warm and a big towel."
  • Cloud and photos: cloud flattens the blues; if photos matter, keep your boat tour for a clear afternoon.

Alternatives on a front day: the Ichkabal ruins, the San Felipe fort and its pirate museum in town, Cenote Azul, or a long lunch on a lagoon-front deck. We think the tradeoff is small in February: with drier weather than January, a front usually costs you a morning rather than a day.

Shared sail: February's pick

Wild Wave's three-hour shared sail visits Cenote Negro, the Pirates' Channel and Bird Island with swim stops, fruit and beer, for about $45 per person on February 2027 dates (it is on a temporary sale now). At 4.96 across 1,670 reviews it is the most-reviewed tour on our shortlist, and February is one of its busiest months for reviews. It sails at 11 am and 3 pm daily, for up to eight guests per booking. We'd book this if you want the lagoon at its most peaceful, under sail rather than engine; our Bacalar boat tours guide compares it with the pontoons and private boats.

Sunrise paddle

ViveSUP's sunrise route through the Pirates' Channel into Laguna Mariscal and the mangroves, rated 4.99 across 697 reviews, costs about $52 per person in February, with breakfast, coffee, a short sound-bowl meditation and GoPro photos. It runs every day except Wednesday. Our Bacalar paddleboard and kayak guide compares it with seven other paddles.

Ichkabal and Los Rápidos

Mehran's small-group day runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8 am with hotel pickup: about $70 per person for the four-hour Ichkabal visit with breakfast, or about $122 for the full eight-hour day that adds an afternoon floating at Los Rápidos. February is still cool enough for an easy climb, and the afternoon float is warmer than in January.

More February Activities Worth Knowing About

We do not have dedicated guides for these yet, but they fit a February trip well:

  • Cenote Azul: a very deep, round cenote on the southern edge of town with a restaurant on its rim, and a good swim on a breezy day when the lagoon is choppy.
  • Fuerte de San Felipe: the 18th-century fort above the lagoon in the centre of town, with a small museum about the pirates who raided the area.
  • Los Rápidos on your own: the river channel south of town where you float with the current past stromatolites; pick a sunny afternoon.
  • Calakmul day trip: the great Maya city in the Campeche jungle is a very long day from Bacalar, and February's dry, mild weather is one of the better times to try it.
  • Floating yoga: Amir AdvenTours runs a 6 am class on a floating platform for about $25. It has only 16 reviews and the newest is from June 2026, so read recent feedback before booking.
  • Sunset from a lagoon club: with sunset close to 7 pm by late February, an evening drink on a dock in town is an easy end to the day.

Our Take

February is the month where we would stop worrying about dates. In our sample hotel rates do not move, the weather is the driest of the winter so far, and the one variable that matters, a passing front, usually costs a morning, so the smartest planning move is simply to put the sail on an afternoon in the middle of your stay.

Tips for Visiting Bacalar in February

  • Book the sail for the afternoon. The breeze builds after lunch, so the 3 pm departure is the most likely to sail rather than motor, and it still finishes well before sunset.
  • Do not pay extra for Valentine's. In our sample the typical hotel charged the same on Valentine's weekend as midweek; only 4 of 22 raised their Saturday rate.
  • Dress for the dawn. Long sleeves and a light windproof layer for sunrise paddles and 8 am boats; one guest measured 13 to 14°C at 6 am.
  • Bring a big towel on cool days. A boat-tour guest's tip for any day with a front around; towels are not included on DayTour Bacalar's boats.
  • Check the weekday. ViveSUP, DayTour Bacalar and several other operators skip Wednesdays, and the Ichkabal tour runs only Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • Skip sunscreen in the water. Operators and lagoon-front hotels ask swimmers not to wear it to protect the stromatolites; a rash guard and hat work better.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Bacalar in March guide covers the driest month of the year and how to handle Semana Santa, and our Bacalar in January guide covers the New Year price peak and the coolest month for the ruins, and our best things to do in Bacalar guide covers the lagoon across the seasons.

How We Put This Guide Together

Weather figures come from the 1991 to 2020 climate normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional for Chetumal and Chacchoben, the nearest official stations to Bacalar, and sunrise and sunset times are calculated for Bacalar's coordinates and time zone and checked against an online almanac. Hotel prices are live rates for the same 22 Bacalar hotels on every night from January 30 to March 1, 2027, pulled on October 22, 2026, and compared hotel by hotel with the same hotels' mid-January rates. Tour prices, schedules and February availability were checked against live booking data on the same day, and every tour here has guest reviews from the past six months except the floating yoga class, which we flag. The conditions details come from reading February reviews of each tour, including the critical ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bacalar good in February?+

Yes, it is one of the best months. February is dry season, with afternoons of 30 to 31°C (86 to 87°F), fewer rainy days than January and calm mornings on the lagoon. Hotel rates in our sample are flat all month, and the occasional cold front usually passes in a day.

What is the weather like in Bacalar in February?+

Highs average 30 to 31°C (86 to 87°F) and lows 18 to 21°C (64 to 69°F), based on the official 1991 to 2020 normals for Chetumal and Chacchoben. Expect about 3 to 6 days with some rain, mostly short showers, and cool mornings on the water.

Is February a good month for sailing in Bacalar?+

Yes. The afternoon breeze usually lets the sailboats sail rather than motor, and February guests describe tacking into the wind and the quiet of a boat with no engine. Book an afternoon departure; on a rare dead-calm day the crew uses the motor instead.

Do cold fronts affect Bacalar in February?+

Sometimes, though less often than in January. A front brings north wind, cloud and cooler air for about a day, with choppy water and flatter colours. Dawn can feel cold, with one guest reporting 13 to 14°C at 6 am, so bring a warm layer and a towel.

Is February expensive in Bacalar?+

No more than mid-January. Across 22 hotels priced for every February night, the median room ran about $115 to $127, and 15 of the 22 charged the same as in mid-January. The only small bump was the Constitution Day long weekend at the start of the month.

What is the best week to visit Bacalar in February?+

Any week works. In our sample rates are flat from February 2 to 28, weekends included, and the weather is steady all month. If you want to avoid the busiest days, skip the Constitution Day long weekend (January 30 to February 1, 2027).

What are the best things to do in Bacalar in February?+

An afternoon sail on the lagoon, a sunrise paddle through the Pirates' Channel, and the Ichkabal ruins with an afternoon at Los Rápidos. Cenote Azul and the San Felipe fort make good options if a front brings a cloudy day.

Is Bacalar busy on Valentine's Day?+

Not noticeably in hotel prices. In our sample the typical hotel charged the same on Valentine's weekend (February 13 to 14, 2027) as midweek, and only 4 of 22 hotels raised their Saturday rate. Popular lagoon-front restaurants and sunset boats may still be worth booking ahead.
