March is Bacalar's driest month: warm water, clear skies and the lagoon's colours at their most reliable. The catch is Semana Santa, Mexico's biggest domestic holiday, which falls on March 21 to 28 in 2027 and pushes up rates at about half the hotels we tracked.
What You Should Know
- March is the driest month of the year at all three nearby official weather stations: about 2 to 4 days with some rain and 15 to 31 mm in total. Afternoons reach 31 to 32°C (88 to 89°F), and the lagoon is warm enough for a comfortable swim.
- Semana Santa falls on March 21 to 28, 2027 (Easter Sunday is the 28th). Across 18 hotels we priced for every March night, half raised their rates over Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday, by 7% to 82%; the other half charged their normal rate.
- The best stretch is March 1 to 11, with midweek March 16 to 18 a close second. The Benito Juárez long weekend (March 13 to 15) is the other busy spell, with 5 of the 18 hotels charging more on the Friday and Saturday, and some hotels start raising rates the weekend before Holy Week.
- For families travelling over the school holidays, a private boat beats the shared tours on price: DayTour Bacalar's Bacalar 101 pontoon is $215 for up to six people at 8 am, about $54 each for a family of four. Like DayTour's shared boat, it does not run on Wednesdays.
Bacalar in March: The Honest Picture
⭐ Best March window: March 1 to 11, with midweek March 16 to 18 a close second. These avoid the Benito Juárez long weekend (March 13 to 15), the run-up weekend (March 19 to 20) and Semana Santa (March 21 to 28), when about half the hotels in our sample raise their rates. You get the driest weather of the year without the holiday crowds.

💰 Average March hotel prices (Bacalar, hotels with 80+ guest reviews):
Mar 1–24: ~$130/night · Holy Thursday Mar 25: ~$146 · Mar 26–27: ~$138 · Easter Sunday Mar 28: ~$146 · Mar 29: ~$131
Median live rate for the same 18 hotels, each priced for every night from 27 February to 4 April 2027, two adults, one night, cheapest meal plan, before taxes, pulled 22 October 2026. The median hides a split: over Holy Week 9 of the 18 hotels charged 7% to 82% above their own early-March rate and the rest did not change.
Yes, Bacalar is excellent in March, as long as you plan around one week. On weather alone it is the best month of the year: the official normals for the three nearest stations all show March as the driest month, with only a few short showers, more clear days than any other month and water warm enough to stay in for as long as you like. The cold fronts that cloud over January and February are now rare.
The week to plan around is Semana Santa, Mexico's biggest domestic holiday. In 2027 it runs from Palm Sunday, March 21, to Easter Sunday, March 28, and the national school break, as reported from the official SEP calendar, covers March 22 to April 2. Most people don't realize how uneven the price effect is: in our sample, half the hotels charged their normal rate all week while the other half added 7% to 82%. If your dates are fixed to the holiday, choosing the right hotel matters more than choosing the right night.
In our view, March suits almost everyone. Couples and slow travellers should aim for the first half of the month; families tied to the school holidays will still find the lagoon at its best, and a private boat priced per group makes the tours better value than in any other month.
Where to Stay on a March Trip to Bacalar
Outside Holy Week, March hotel prices in our sample are steady and close to February's. Over Easter, compare before you book: about half the hotels we tracked raised their rates and half did not, so two similar lagoon-front rooms can be priced very differently on the same night.
Lagoon-front hotels along the Costera south of town and Highway 307 north of it have their own docks, which comes into its own on hot March afternoons. Town hotels cost less and put you a short walk from restaurants and the tour docks. Our guide to the best hotels in Bacalar ranks 12 options on both sides, including the five that accept children.

Bacalar Weather in March: The Driest Month of the Year
| Metric | March |
|---|---|
| Avg High | 31–32°C (88–89°F) |
| Avg Low | 19–22°C (66–72°F) |
| Lagoon Water Temp | ~27°C (81°F), estimate |
| Rain Days | ~2–4 (the fewest of the year) |
| Humidity | Moderate |
| Wind | Light mornings, afternoon breeze; fronts now rare |
| Hurricane Risk | None (season runs June–November) |
There is no long-term weather station in Bacalar itself. Temperatures and rain here come from the 1991 to 2020 normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional at Chetumal, about 22 km south on the same coast, and Chacchoben, about 35 km north and further inland. We found no official lagoon temperature series; climate guides put the water around 27°C in March.
Temperature and Humidity
March is where Bacalar starts to feel properly hot in the afternoon. Highs reach 31 to 32°C (88 to 89°F) at the three stations, and nights range from about 19°C (66°F) inland at Chacchoben to 22°C (72°F) on the coast at Chetumal. Mornings are the most pleasant time of day: no longer cold on the water as in January, and still cool enough for a walk or a climb before the heat builds. An early-April guest on DayTour's boat was glad they had come then because "it will be extremely hot later", which is a fair warning for late March too.
Rain Pattern
March is the driest month of the year at both Chetumal stations and at Chacchoben, on both counts: 15 to 31 mm of rain on about 2 to 4 days. A wet day is unusual; a passing shower is the most you should plan around.
Lagoon Conditions
With the most clear days of the year, March is when the lagoon's bands of turquoise and deep blue are most reliably at full strength. Mornings are usually still, and a breeze builds in the afternoon that keeps the sailboats moving and takes the edge off the heat. The water is warm enough to swim comfortably at any time of day.
Crowds and Prices in March: Week by Week
We priced the same 18 hotels for every night from February 27 to April 4, 2027, and compared each with its own rate in the first eleven days of March.
- March 1 to 11: quiet and steady. The median was about $130 every night, the same as February for most hotels.
- Benito Juárez long weekend (Sat March 13 to Mon March 15): Benito Juárez Day falls on the third Monday of March, giving a long weekend. The median barely moved, but 5 of the 18 hotels charged 7% to 29% more on the Friday and Saturday, and 4 charged more on the Sunday and holiday Monday.
- March 16 to 20: normal midweek; by Friday 19 and Saturday 20, 6 of the 18 hotels were already charging more, ahead of Holy Week.
- Semana Santa (Sun March 21 to Sun March 28): rates held until Holy Wednesday, then the median rose to about $146 on Holy Thursday (March 25), $138 on Good Friday and Saturday, and $146 on Easter Sunday. Nine of the 18 hotels charged more than usual, by 7% to 82%; the other nine charged their normal rate.
- After Easter: the median fell back to $131 on March 29 and lower still into early April, although the school break, as reported from the SEP calendar, runs to April 2.
The biggest difference over Easter is between hotels, not between nights. We'd compare at least three similar hotels before booking Holy Week; in our sample the cheapest half did not raise prices at all. Tours, unlike hotels, kept their normal prices on every Holy Week date we checked.
The Driest Month: Clear Water, Warm Swims and Long Afternoons
March is the payoff for coming in the dry season: everything that made January and February good, with warmer water and fewer clouds.
The lagoon at its most reliable
With the fewest rainy days of the year, March gives you the best chance of seeing the lagoon's colours at full strength on the day you book your boat. You no longer need to keep a spare day for a cold front, which makes March the easiest month to plan a short trip around.
Warm water all day
Climate guides put the lagoon at about 27°C in March, warm enough that early boats are comfortable rather than chilly. The 8 am departures, which are also the cheapest, are the best of both worlds: still water, softer sun and lower prices. A February 2026 guest on the 8 am private boat noted the colours forming "gradient colors" in the low light and advised a light jacket for the wind.
Later sunsets
Sunset moves from about 6:59 pm on March 1 to 7:07 pm on March 31, so a 3 pm boat ends with plenty of daylight left. Sunrise comes earlier too, from about 7:12 am to 6:48 am, so sunrise paddles reach the far lagoons at a slightly more civilised hour than in January.
Semana Santa in Bacalar: How to Handle Holy Week
Risk level: moderate, for one week. Holy Week is the busiest week of the year for domestic travel in Mexico, and in 2027 it falls from Palm Sunday, March 21, to Easter Sunday, March 28. Holy Thursday and Good Friday (March 25 and 26) are the peak days off for many Mexicans.
- Hotels: half the hotels in our sample raised rates from Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday, by 7% to 82%, and half did not. Compare before booking.
- Tours: every tour on our shortlist kept its normal price on the Holy Week dates we checked, and all had open departures on the days they run. Book a few days ahead anyway; small boats fill first.
- Busy docks: expect more boats on the lagoon around the popular stops. A March 2026 family on a private pontoon noted other tours around but still found it "very quiet, peaceful, and laid back", and a March 2026 guest on the shared boat appreciated a guide who chose spots "not as busy as others". The 8 am departures are the quietest.
- Wednesdays: DayTour Bacalar's boats and ViveSUP's paddles do not run on Wednesdays, including Holy Wednesday (March 24).
We think the tradeoff is manageable: if your dates are fixed to the holiday, pick one of the hotels that keep their normal rate, go out on the 8 am boats, and book the private pontoon if you are four or more.
The Best Things to Do in Bacalar in March

Private pontoon: March's pick
DayTour Bacalar's Bacalar 101 is a private three-hour pontoon tour of the lagoon's main stops, rated 4.96 across 1,137 reviews. The price is per boat rather than per person: $215 at 8 am, $259 at 11 am or 3 pm and $308 for the four-hour sunset tour, the same for two people as for six (eight cost $250 at 8 am). That makes it about $54 each for a family of four at 8 am, against about $45 each on the shared sail. It includes a bilingual guide, beers, water and snacks, but not towels, and it does not run on Wednesdays. We'd book this for any group of four or more, and especially over Holy Week, when it lets you set your own pace away from the busier shared boats.
Sunrise paddle and shared sail
ViveSUP's sunrise route through the Pirates' Channel into Laguna Mariscal and the mangroves, rated 4.99 across 697 reviews, costs about $52 per person and no longer comes with January's cold start. Wild Wave's shared sail costs about $45 per person at 11 am and 3 pm. Our Bacalar paddleboard and kayak guide and Bacalar boat tours guide compare all the options.
Ichkabal and Los Rápidos
Mehran's small-group day runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8 am with hotel pickup: about $70 per person for the four-hour Ichkabal visit with breakfast, or about $122 for the full eight-hour day that adds an afternoon floating at Los Rápidos. In March the climb is noticeably hotter than in January, so the early start matters; the afternoon float at Los Rápidos is at its most welcome.
More March Activities Worth Knowing About
We do not have dedicated guides for these yet, but they fit a March trip well:
- Cenote Azul: a very deep, round cenote on the southern edge of town with a restaurant on its rim; the obvious place to cool off on a hot March afternoon.
- Los Rápidos on your own: the river channel south of town where you float with the current past stromatolites. Expect it to be busier over Holy Week; go early.
- Fuerte de San Felipe: the 18th-century fort above the lagoon in the centre of town, with a small museum about the pirates who raided the area. Go late in the afternoon.
- Calakmul day trip: the great Maya city in the Campeche jungle is a very long day from Bacalar, and March is getting hot for the walking; start at dawn if you go.
- Floating yoga: Amir AdvenTours runs a 6 am class on a floating platform for about $25. It has only 16 reviews and the newest is from June 2026, so read recent feedback before booking.
- Sunset from a lagoon club: with sunset after 7 pm by the end of the month, an evening drink on a dock in town is an easy end to the day.
Our Take
The single most useful thing we found for March is that Holy Week pricing splits the hotels down the middle. Half of the ones we tracked charged exactly their normal rate over Easter; the other half added up to 82%. If you are tied to the holiday, an extra ten minutes comparing hotels saves more than moving your dates would.
Tips for Visiting Bacalar in March
- Aim for March 1 to 11, or midweek March 16 to 18. The driest weather of the year without the long weekend or the Holy Week run-up.
- Compare hotels over Easter. In our sample half the hotels raised rates for Holy Thursday to Easter Sunday and half did not.
- Price the private boat if you are four or more. Bacalar 101 costs the same for two people as for six, about $54 each for four at 8 am.
- Go early. The 8 am boats are the cheapest, the calmest and the coolest, and they beat the Holy Week traffic at the popular stops.
- Check the weekday. DayTour Bacalar's boats and ViveSUP's paddles do not run on Wednesdays, and the Ichkabal tour runs only Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
- Skip sunscreen in the water. Operators and lagoon-front hotels ask swimmers not to wear it to protect the stromatolites; with March sun, a rash guard and a hat matter more than ever.
- Visiting at a different time of year? Our Bacalar in April guide covers the quiet, hot weeks after Easter, and our Bacalar in February guide covers the month before, with sailing breezes and flat hotel rates, and our Bacalar in January guide covers the coolest month for the ruins. For everything else to do in town, whatever the month, see our guide to the best things to do in Bacalar.
How We Put This Guide Together
Weather figures come from the 1991 to 2020 climate normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional for Chetumal and Chacchoben, the nearest official stations to Bacalar, and sunrise and sunset times are calculated for Bacalar's coordinates and time zone and checked against an online almanac. Hotel prices are live rates for the same 18 Bacalar hotels on every night from February 27 to April 4, 2027, pulled on October 22, 2026, and compared hotel by hotel with the same hotels' rates for March 1 to 11. Tour prices, schedules and availability, including every Holy Week date, were checked against live booking data on the same day; the private pontoon was priced for groups of two to eight. Every tour here has guest reviews from the past six months except the floating yoga class, which we flag. School holiday dates are from press reports of Mexico's 2026 to 2027 SEP school calendar, and public holiday dates from Mexico's Federal Labor Law.
