April is Bacalar after the holidays: still dry, hotter by the week, with warm water and quieter docks once the Easter school break ends on April 2. Hotel rates hold or fall, and the trick is timing your day around the heat.

What You Should Know

  • April is still dry season, with about 3 to 4 days of light rain, but it is noticeably hotter than March: afternoons reach 32 to 33°C (91 to 92°F). The lagoon is warm enough to swim at any hour.
  • The Easter school break, as reported from the official SEP calendar, runs to April 2, 2027, with classes back on April 5. After that the lagoon settles into its quietest stretch of the dry season.
  • Hotel rates hold or fall. Across 16 hotels we priced for every April night, 10 charged the same as in early March (within 2%), 4 were 15% to 25% cheaper and 1 was dearer. The Labour Day weekend at the end of the month barely registered.
  • Plan your day around the heat. The 8 am boats are the coolest and the cheapest, and guests recommend 11 am for the brightest colours; after lunch is the time for a cenote swim or a long shady lunch.

Bacalar in April: The Honest Picture

⭐ Best April window: April 5 to 29. The Easter school break is over, about a quarter of the hotels in our sample have dropped their rates below early March, and the weather is still dry. Book morning activities and keep the hottest hours for the water.

💰 April hotel prices (Bacalar, hotels with 80+ guest reviews):
Mar 29–31 (end of Easter week): ~$118–131/night · Apr 1–30: ~$102/night · Labour Day weekend (May 1–2): ~$102/night
Median live rate for the same 16 hotels, each priced for every night from 29 March to 2 May 2027, two adults, one night, cheapest meal plan, before taxes, pulled 22 October 2026. The drop in the median is driven by a few hotels; hotel by hotel, 10 of the 16 charged the same in April as in early March and 4 were 15% to 25% cheaper.

Yes, Bacalar is good in April, especially after the first few days. It is still the dry season, with only a few days of rain, and the water is the warmest it has been all year. Once the Easter school holidays end on April 2, the lagoon settles into a quiet stretch with no national holidays until the Labour Day weekend at the very end of the month.

The trade is heat. Afternoons now reach 32 to 33°C (91 to 92°F), the sun is strong, and there is no cold front to break it up. What typically happens is that guests who book the early boats rave about the light and the colours, while the middle of the day is best spent in the water. An April 2026 guest on DayTour Bacalar's boat tour was "glad we came early April, it will be extremely hot later", which is a fair summary of the month.

In our view, April suits couples and anyone who wants the lagoon quiet and warm, and who does not mind an early start. It is less ideal for families tied to school dates, since the national break ends on April 2, and for anyone planning long walks or ruins in the middle of the day.

Where to Stay on an April Trip to Bacalar

April is a good month to book: in our sample most hotels charge the same as in early March, and about one in four is cheaper. The end of Easter week (March 29 to 31) is the only stretch where some hotels still charge holiday rates.

With hot afternoons, a lagoon-front hotel with its own dock earns its price in April: you can swim whenever the heat builds. Town hotels cost less and put you a short walk from restaurants and the tour docks; a pool matters more this month. Our guide to the best hotels in Bacalar ranks 12 options on both sides.

There is no long-term weather station in Bacalar itself. Temperatures and rain here come from the 1991 to 2020 normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional at Chetumal, about 22 km south on the same coast, and Chacchoben, about 35 km north and further inland. We found no official lagoon temperature series; climate guides put the water around 28°C in April.

Temperature and Humidity

April is the month the heat arrives. Afternoon highs reach 32.5 to 33°C (91 to 92°F) at the three stations, two degrees up on March, and nights range from about 21°C (70°F) inland at Chacchoben to 24°C (75°F) on the coast at Chetumal. The humidity starts to climb toward the end of the month. Mornings are the comfortable part of the day, and the sun is high and strong from late morning.

Rain Pattern

April is still dry: 23 to 53 mm of rain on about 3 to 4 days, depending on the station. When it comes, it can still be a heavy shower. One April 2026 guest on DayTour's boat had rain all morning before their 3 pm tour, which then ran under cloud and, in their words, was perfect.

Lagoon Conditions

The water is the warmest it has been since autumn, and the strong sun brings out the colours. The lagoon is usually calm at dawn, and the wind builds through the morning: an April 2026 sunrise paddler noted that "the current / winds pick up as the morning goes on so the return is tougher". By afternoon there is enough breeze for the sailboats and a light chop on the open water.

Crowds and Prices in April: Week by Week

We priced the same 16 hotels for every night from March 29 to May 2, 2027, and compared each with its own rate for March 1 to 11.

  • March 29 to 31 (end of Easter week): the median was about $118 to $131, and 4 to 5 of the 16 hotels still charged 9% to 45% above their early-March rate. The national school break, as reported from the SEP calendar, runs to April 2.
  • April 1 to 4: mixed. The median fell to about $102, but a few hotels were still above their March rate on the final weekend of the school holidays.
  • April 5 to 30: the value window. Ten of the 16 hotels charged the same as in early March (within 2%), 4 were 15% to 25% cheaper and 1 was 15% dearer. Weekends cost the same as weekdays.
  • Labour Day weekend (Sat May 1 to Sun May 2): barely noticeable. Three of the 16 hotels charged 5% to 16% more on the Saturday than on the Wednesday before; the rest did not change.

Most people don't realize that the post-Easter drop here is a handful of hotels cutting prices, not a market-wide sale: most hotels simply hold their dry-season rate. We'd use April to look at the hotels that do discount: three of the four that cut prices in our sample were lagoon-front, including Cristalino, which fell from about $182 to $155 a night. Tours kept the same prices as earlier in the year.

Post-Easter Calm: Warm Water and Quiet Docks

April's draw is simple: the lagoon is at its warmest of the dry season, the holiday crowds have gone home, and the weather is still reliably dry.

The warmest water so far

Climate guides put the lagoon at about 28°C in April, warm enough to stay in for as long as you like at any hour. That changes how a tour feels: the 8 am departure, which can be bracing in January, is now pleasant from the first swim stop. An April 2026 guest on DayTour's 8 am boat described a group of about ten, a three-hour trip with about an hour swimming in the Pirates' Channel and another 20 minutes at the end.

Quiet weeks after the holidays

Once the school break ends on April 2, there is no national holiday until the Labour Day weekend at the start of May. Shared boats still run daily (except DayTour's on Wednesdays), and the private pontoons and sailboats are easy to book a day or two ahead.

The best time of day for each thing

Guests' advice lines up neatly: an April 2025 guest recommended the private boat at 8 am "ya que el sol no está tan fuerte" (because the sun is not as strong), and another recommended Wild Wave's 11 am sail "to see the full colors". Sunrise comes earlier, from about 6:47 am on April 1 to 6:26 am on April 30, and sunset later, from about 7:07 pm to 7:15 pm, so there is plenty of daylight left after a 3 pm boat.

The Heat Arrives: What It Changes in April

Risk level: moderate, and easy to plan around. April has no cold fronts and little rain; the downside is heat and strong sun from late morning to mid-afternoon.

  • Sun on the water: there is little shade on most boats, and operators ask guests not to wear sunscreen in the lagoon to protect the stromatolites. A long-sleeved rash guard, a hat and sunglasses do the job.
  • Ruins and walking: the Ichkabal climb and the walk around town are much hotter than in winter. Start at 8 am and carry water.
  • Paddling back: on sunrise paddles the wind tends to build by mid-morning, so the return leg is harder work. Pace yourself on the way out.
  • Afternoon showers: rare, but a heavy shower can still roll through; one April 2026 guest's morning was rained off before a perfect afternoon tour.

We think the tradeoff is worth it: with an early start and the middle of the day in the water, April is one of the most relaxing months on the lagoon.

Shared boat with cenotes: April's pick

DayTour Bacalar's three-hour shared boat tour visits the stromatolites, a cenote, the Pirates' Channel and Bird Island, with swim stops, beers, fruit drinks and snacks, for $29 per person at 8 am or $39 at 11 am and 3 pm. At 4.93 across 1,321 reviews it is one of the best-reviewed tours on the lagoon, and the 8 am departure is both the cheapest and the coolest way to spend a morning on the water in April. It does not run on Wednesdays, and towels are not included. We'd book this as the first tour of any April trip; one March 2026 guest's tip is to wear a swimsuit, since you get out to swim and wade more than the description suggests.

Sunrise paddle and the private pontoon

ViveSUP's sunrise route through the Pirates' Channel into Laguna Mariscal, rated 4.99 across 697 reviews, costs about $52 per person; in April the water is warm from the start, and the wind picks up for the return. For a group, DayTour's private Bacalar 101 pontoon is $215 per boat for up to six at 8 am. Our Bacalar paddleboard and kayak guide and Bacalar boat tours guide compare all the options.

Ichkabal and Los Rápidos

Mehran's small-group day runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8 am with hotel pickup: about $70 per person for the four-hour Ichkabal visit with breakfast, or about $122 for the full day that adds an afternoon floating at Los Rápidos. In April we'd lean toward the full day, since the cool water after the climb is most of the point.

More April Activities Worth Knowing About

We do not have dedicated guides for these yet, but they fit an April trip well:

  • Cenote Azul: a very deep, round cenote on the southern edge of town with a restaurant on its rim; the obvious place to spend a hot April afternoon.
  • Los Rápidos on your own: the river channel south of town where you float with the current past stromatolites; warm and quiet once the Easter crowds have gone.
  • Fuerte de San Felipe: the 18th-century fort above the lagoon in the centre of town, with a small museum about the pirates who raided the area. Go late in the afternoon.
  • Calakmul day trip: the great Maya city in the Campeche jungle is a very long day from Bacalar and a hot one in April; only worth it if you start at dawn.
  • Floating yoga: Amir AdvenTours runs a 6 am class on a floating platform for about $25. It has only 16 reviews and the newest is from June 2026, so read recent feedback before booking.
  • Sunset from a lagoon club: with sunset after 7 pm all month, an evening swim and a drink on a dock in town is the best way to end a hot day.

Our Take

April's best value is not a cheaper hotel but a better-timed day. The same lagoon that is bracing at 8 am in January is warm and glassy at 8 am in April, and that early boat is also the cheapest seat on the water, so the month rewards anyone willing to be up before the heat.

Tips for Visiting Bacalar in April

  • Arrive after April 4. The Easter school break runs to April 2, and a few hotels hold holiday rates through that weekend.
  • Book the 8 am boat. It is the coolest and the cheapest departure, $29 on DayTour's shared boat and $215 per boat on the private pontoon.
  • Keep the afternoon for the water. A cenote swim or a lagoon-front dock beats any walking tour between noon and 4 pm.
  • Cover up instead of sunscreen. Operators and lagoon-front hotels ask swimmers not to wear sunscreen in the lagoon; a long-sleeved rash guard and a hat are essential in April sun.
  • Wear your swimsuit. The boat tours include more swimming and wading than their descriptions suggest.
  • Check the weekday. DayTour Bacalar's boats and ViveSUP's paddles do not run on Wednesdays, and the Ichkabal tour runs only Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Bacalar in May guide covers the start of the low season, the first rains and the windy afternoons, and our Bacalar in March guide covers the driest month and Semana Santa, and our Bacalar in February guide covers the steadiest sailing weather of the winter. How We Put This Guide Together

Weather figures come from the 1991 to 2020 climate normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional for Chetumal and Chacchoben, the nearest official stations to Bacalar, and sunrise and sunset times are calculated for Bacalar's coordinates and time zone and checked against an online almanac. Hotel prices are live rates for the same 16 Bacalar hotels on every night from March 29 to May 2, 2027, pulled on October 22, 2026, and compared hotel by hotel with the same hotels' rates for March 1 to 11. Tour prices, schedules and April availability were checked against live booking data on the same day, and every tour here has guest reviews from the past six months except the floating yoga class, which we flag. The conditions details come from reading April reviews of each tour, including the critical ones. School holiday dates are from press reports of Mexico's 2026 to 2027 SEP school calendar.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bacalar good in April?+

Yes. April is still dry season, with warm water and strong sun for the lagoon's colours, and the Easter crowds have gone by April 5. The catch is heat: afternoons reach 32 to 33°C (91 to 92°F), so plan boats for the morning and the afternoon for swimming.

Is it too hot in Bacalar in April?+

Not if you time your day. Mornings are comfortable and the water is around 28°C, so the hot hours are best spent swimming. Book boats at 8 am, keep walks and the San Felipe fort for late afternoon, and cover up with a rash guard instead of sunscreen in the lagoon.

Is Bacalar busy after Easter?+

Not for long. The national school break, as reported from the SEP calendar, ends on April 2, 2027, and classes resume on April 5. From then until the Labour Day weekend at the start of May there are no national holidays, and the lagoon is quiet.

No. Across 16 hotels priced for every April night, 10 charged the same as in early March, 4 were 15% to 25% cheaper and 1 was dearer. The last days of Easter week (March 29 to 31) are the only time some hotels still charge holiday rates.

Any week from April 5. The school holidays are over, hotel rates in our sample are flat through the rest of the month, weekends included, and the Labour Day weekend (May 1 to 2) barely moved prices.

What are the best things to do in Bacalar in April?+

An 8 am boat tour with cenote stops, a sunrise paddle through the Pirates' Channel, an afternoon swim at Cenote Azul, and an evening drink on a lagoon-front dock. The Ichkabal ruins are best done as the full day that ends floating at Los Rápidos.

Can you swim in Bacalar Lagoon in April?+

Yes, and comfortably at any time of day. Climate guides put the water around 28°C (82°F) in April. Operators and hotels ask swimmers not to wear sunscreen in the lagoon to protect the stromatolites, so bring a rash guard and a hat.
