May is the start of Bacalar's low season: hot, quiet and still mostly sunny, with the first rains arriving and a strong afternoon wind on the lagoon. Hotel rates hold or fall, and the best of the day is the early morning.

What You Should Know

  • May is one of Bacalar's hottest months, with afternoons of 33 to 34°C (91 to 93°F), and the start of the rainy season: about 6 to 8 days with rain and 75 to 117 mm in total, roughly double April, by the official normals for the nearest stations.
  • The lagoon gets windy in the afternoon. May 2026 guests on the shared sailboat warned of "crazy winds", and a DayTour boat guest advised keeping things dry because "the wind is strong". Mornings are calm, which makes May a sunrise month.
  • Hotel rates hold or fall. Across 15 hotels we priced for every May night, 8 charged the same as in early March (within 2%), 5 were 12% to 25% cheaper and 2 were dearer. There is no holiday spike.
  • May is the start of the low season, with no school holidays and quiet docks. ViveSUP moves its sunrise paddle to 5:30 am from May, which is about an hour before sunrise, so you still reach the far lagoons as the sky lights up.

Bacalar in May: The Honest Picture

⭐ Best May window: the first half of the month. Rain normally builds toward June, so early May gives you the best odds of dry days, and the docks are already quiet. Book anything on the water for the morning, before the wind gets up.

Per hotel, compared with early March: 8 of 15 the same (within 2%) · 5 of 15 cheaper by 12–25% · 2 of 15 dearer
Live rates for the same 15 hotels, each priced for every night from 30 April to 1 June 2027, two adults, one night, cheapest meal plan, before taxes, pulled 22 October 2026. Their median ran about $95 to $110 a night, but with 15 hotels the median jumps between neighbours, so the per-hotel comparison is the clearer guide.

Bacalar is good in May if you like it hot and quiet. The dry-season visitors have mostly gone, there are no national school holidays, and the docks and swim stops are about as empty as they get. The water is warm, the first half of the month is still mostly dry, and hotel rates in our sample are the same as or lower than in the dry season.

Three things change. It is one of the hottest months of the year, with afternoons of 33 to 34°C. The rainy season starts, so you can expect a handful of storms, more of them toward the end of the month. And the lagoon gets windy in the afternoon: May guests describe "crazy winds" on the sailboat and strong wind on the shared boats. What typically happens is a glassy, still lagoon at sunrise that turns choppy by early afternoon.

In our view, May suits couples and travellers who are happy to be up early and spend the hot hours in the water. It is less ideal for anyone who wants long walks, ruins or guaranteed blue skies, and for first-time sailors who would rather not lean into a strong breeze.

Where to Stay on a May Trip to Bacalar

May is a good month to book: in our sample most hotels charge the same as in the dry season and about one in three is cheaper, including Cristalino, which fell from about $182 to $154 a night against early March. There is no holiday weekend to plan around.

With hot afternoons and windy water, a lagoon-front hotel with its own dock lets you swim early or late when the lagoon is calm. Town hotels cost less and put you a short walk from restaurants and the tour docks; a pool and good air conditioning matter more this month. Our guide to the best hotels in Bacalar ranks 12 options on both sides.

There is no long-term weather station in Bacalar itself. Temperatures and rain here come from the 1991 to 2020 normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional at Chetumal, about 22 km south on the same coast, and Chacchoben, about 35 km north and further inland. We found no official lagoon temperature series; climate guides put the water around 28°C in May.

Temperature and Humidity

May is among the hottest months in Bacalar. Afternoon highs reach 33 to 34°C (91 to 93°F) at the three stations, and nights stay warm: about 22°C (72°F) inland at Chacchoben and 25°C (77°F) on the coast at Chetumal. The humidity rises as the rains arrive, so it feels hotter than April. The comfortable hours are from dawn to about 10 am and after 5 pm.

Rain Pattern

May is when the rainy season begins. The normals give 75 to 117 mm on about 6 to 8 days, roughly double April's total, and June is wetter again. Early in the rainy season the rain tends to come as short storms later in the day rather than all-day rain, so mornings are often still clear.

Lagoon Conditions

The defining feature of May on the water is the afternoon wind. A May 2026 sailboat guest titled their review "if you haven't been on a sail boat before be prepared for the crazy winds", another May 2026 guest on DayTour's boat warned that "the wind is strong" and to keep things dry, and a May 2025 sailor described "viel Wind & Sonne" (lots of wind and sun). Mornings are typically calm and glassy, which is why we'd put anything on the water before noon this month.

Crowds and Prices in May

We priced the same 15 hotels for every night from April 30 to June 1, 2027, and compared each with its own rate for March 1 to 11.

  • Labour Day weekend (Sat May 1 to Sun May 2): no spike. Most hotels charged their normal rate, and the median was lower than on the last night of April.
  • May 3 to 31: flat, weekends included. Eight of the 15 hotels charged the same as in early March (within 2%), 5 were 12% to 25% cheaper and 2 were dearer, by 4% and 9%.
  • Into June: the median ticked up on June 1 in our sample, so the end of May is not a cheaper time to arrive than the start.

Most people don't realize how little low season changes the price of a good room here: the hotels that discount had mostly already done so in April, and most others hold the same rate all year. What changes in May is the crowd, not the bill. There are no national school holidays, and tours in our checks kept the same prices as earlier in the year, with plenty of open dates.

Low Season Begins: Empty Docks and Early Mornings

May's draw is the quiet. With the dry-season visitors gone and no holidays, it is the easiest month to have a swim stop to yourself, and the best way to enjoy it is to live by the morning.

Sunrise is the best part of the day

Sunrise comes at about 6:25 am on May 1 and 6:16 am on May 31, close to the earliest of the year. ViveSUP moves its sunrise paddle to 5:30 am from May, so you still set off in the dark and reach the far lagoons as the sky lights up, before the heat and the wind. A May 2025 paddler who started at 5 am described crossing the lagoon in three to three and a half hours and found it "absolutely suited for beginners".

Morning boats, afternoon water

The 8 am boats beat both the heat and the wind; DayTour's shared boat is $29 at that hour and its private pontoon $215 per boat for up to six. Keep the afternoon for a cenote swim or a dock at your hotel. If you want a sail, book it knowing the breeze will be strong: exciting for some, unsettling for nervous first-timers.

Long evenings

Sunset moves from about 7:15 pm to 7:26 pm through the month, so there is time for a swim and a drink on a lagoon-front dock after the heat breaks.

Heat, Wind and the First Storms: What to Plan Around

Risk level: moderate. May trades the cold fronts of winter for heat, wind and the first rainy-season storms. None of them is a reason to skip the month, but each changes how you plan the day.

  • Heat: afternoons of 33 to 34°C with rising humidity. Do walking, the San Felipe fort and any ruins early or late, and drink more than you think you need.
  • Afternoon wind: strong enough on the open lagoon to make a sail lively and a shared boat splashy. Keep phones and cameras in a dry bag.
  • Storms: about 6 to 8 rain days, mostly short storms later in the day; the end of the month is wetter than the start.
  • Sun on the water: operators ask guests not to wear sunscreen in the lagoon to protect the stromatolites, so a long-sleeved rash guard and a hat are essential.

We think the tradeoff is worth it for travellers who like quiet places: May costs no more than the dry season, the water is at its warmest, and the mornings are as good as any month's.

Sunrise paddle: May's pick

ViveSUP's sunrise route through the Pirates' Channel into Laguna Mariscal and the mangroves is the best-rated paddle tour in Bacalar, at 4.99 across 697 reviews. From May it starts at 5:30 am and costs about $52 per person, with breakfast, coffee, a short sound-bowl meditation and GoPro photos. It runs every day except Wednesday. In May it is the calmest, coolest three hours you will spend on the lagoon. We'd book this first; our Bacalar paddleboard and kayak guide compares it with seven other paddles.

Morning boats

DayTour Bacalar's shared boat with cenote stops is $29 per person at 8 am ($39 at 11 am and 3 pm), and its private Bacalar 101 pontoon is $215 per boat for up to six at 8 am. Both visit the stromatolites, a cenote, the Pirates' Channel and Bird Island, and neither runs on Wednesdays. Wild Wave's shared sail costs about $45 per person; in May, expect a lively ride. Our Bacalar boat tours guide compares them all.

Ichkabal and Los Rápidos

Mehran's small-group day runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8 am with hotel pickup, about $70 for the Ichkabal visit or about $122 for the full day with an afternoon floating at Los Rápidos. In May we'd only do the full day: the climb is hot, and the float is what makes it worth it.

More May Activities Worth Knowing About

We do not have dedicated guides for these yet, but they fit a May trip well:

  • Cenote Azul: a very deep, round cenote on the southern edge of town with a restaurant on its rim, and the best place to sit out a hot May afternoon.
  • Los Rápidos on your own: the river channel south of town where you float with the current past stromatolites; quiet in the low season.
  • Fuerte de San Felipe: the 18th-century fort above the lagoon in the centre of town, with a small museum about the pirates who raided the area. Go after 5 pm.
  • Floating yoga: Amir AdvenTours runs a 6 am class on a floating platform for about $25. It has only 16 reviews and the newest is from June 2026, so read recent feedback before booking.
  • Sunset from a lagoon club: with sunset after 7:15 pm, an evening swim and a drink on a dock in town is the best way to end a hot day.

Our Take

May is when the lagoon's day splits in two. Before about 10 am it is glassy, cool and empty; after lunch it is hot, windy and sometimes stormy. Most people don't realize how much that matters until they are bouncing across the open water at 3 pm, so book every boat for the morning and treat the afternoon as swimming time.

Tips for Visiting Bacalar in May

  • Book the water in the morning. The sunrise paddle and the 8 am boats get the calm before the afternoon wind.
  • Use a dry bag. May guests on the shared boats warn that the wind is strong and to keep things dry.
  • Come early in the month. The normals suggest the rains build toward June, so the first half of May is the better bet for dry days.
  • Cover up instead of sunscreen. Operators and lagoon-front hotels ask swimmers not to wear sunscreen in the lagoon; a long-sleeved rash guard and a hat are essential.
  • Pack insect repellent for evenings. Use it on land around dusk; skip it before swimming in the lagoon.
  • Check the weekday. DayTour Bacalar's boats and ViveSUP's paddles do not run on Wednesdays, and the Ichkabal tour runs only Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Bacalar in June guide covers the full rainy season and the last low-priced weeks before July, and our Bacalar in April guide covers the quiet, dry weeks after Easter, and our Bacalar in March guide covers the driest month of the year. How We Put This Guide Together

Weather figures come from the 1991 to 2020 climate normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional for Chetumal and Chacchoben, the nearest official stations to Bacalar, and sunrise and sunset times are calculated for Bacalar's coordinates and time zone and checked against an online almanac. Hotel prices are live rates for the same 15 Bacalar hotels on every night from April 30 to June 1, 2027, pulled on October 22, 2026, and compared hotel by hotel with the same hotels' rates for March 1 to 11. Tour prices, schedules and May availability were checked against live booking data on the same day, and every tour here has guest reviews from the past six months except the floating yoga class, which we flag. The conditions details come from reading May reviews of each tour, including the critical ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Bacalar good in May?+

Yes, if you like it hot and quiet. May is the start of the low season, with empty docks, warm water and hotel rates at or below the dry season. Afternoons reach 33 to 34°C (91 to 93°F), the first rains arrive and the lagoon gets windy after lunch, so do everything on the water in the morning.

What is the weather like in Bacalar in May?+

Highs average 33 to 34°C (91 to 93°F) and lows 22 to 25°C (72 to 77°F), based on the official 1991 to 2020 normals for Chetumal and Chacchoben. Expect about 6 to 8 days with rain, mostly short afternoon or evening storms, and humid air.

Does it rain a lot in Bacalar in May?+

Not a lot, but more than in the dry season. The normals give 75 to 117 mm on about 6 to 8 days, roughly double April, mostly as short storms later in the day. June is wetter again, so the first half of May is the safer bet.

Is Bacalar Lagoon windy in May?+

In the afternoon, often. May 2026 guests on the shared sailboat warned of "crazy winds", and a guest on DayTour's boat said the wind was strong enough to keep things in a dry bag. Mornings are usually calm, so book paddles and boats early.

Is May expensive in Bacalar?+

No. Across 15 hotels priced for every May night, 8 charged the same as in early March, 5 were 12% to 25% cheaper and 2 were slightly dearer. The Labour Day weekend did not push prices up.

What is the best week to visit Bacalar in May?+

The first half of the month. Hotel rates in our sample are flat all May, so the deciding factor is weather: the rains normally build toward June, which makes early May the better bet for dry days.

What are the best things to do in Bacalar in May?+

A sunrise paddle through the Pirates' Channel, an 8 am boat tour before the wind, an afternoon swim at Cenote Azul and an evening drink on a lagoon-front dock. Leave ruins and long walks for the early morning or skip them.

Is May hurricane season in Bacalar?+

No. The Atlantic hurricane season officially opens on June 1, and May storms in Bacalar are usually short afternoon or evening downpours rather than tropical systems.
