June is Bacalar's rainy season in full: storms on 10 to 13 days, heat and humidity, but also the longest days of the year, warm water and some of the quietest docks. Hotel rates stay at or below the dry season until the summer holidays push them up from July 1.

What You Should Know

  • June is one of Bacalar's wettest months: about 10 to 13 days with rain and 117 to 205 mm in total, by the official normals for the nearest stations. Most of it comes as storms that pass, and guests regularly describe tours that went ahead between showers.
  • It is also the longest-daylight month of the year: sunrise at about 6:15 am and sunset up to about 7:34 pm. The early morning is the calmest and coolest time on the lagoon.
  • Hotel rates stay low until July. Across 16 hotels priced for every June night, 8 charged the same as in early March, 5 were 12% to 25% cheaper and 3 were dearer. Rates in our sample jumped on July 1, so June is the last low-priced month before the summer holidays.
  • The Atlantic hurricane season opens on June 1, but storms are most likely from August to October. Book tours with free cancellation (the standard on our shortlist is a full refund up to 24 hours before) and keep a spare day.

Bacalar in June: The Honest Picture

⭐ Best June window: any week, booked with flexibility. Hotel rates in our sample are flat all month and the docks are quiet. Rain can fall in any week, so keep one spare day for your most important lagoon tour, and aim to be on the water in the morning.

Live rates for the same 16 hotels, each priced for every night from 29 May to 2 July 2027, two adults, one night, cheapest meal plan, before taxes, pulled 22 October 2026. The median was flat at about $121 for every June night and rose to $151 on July 1 and $158 on July 2; with 16 hotels the median is a rough guide, so we lead with the per-hotel comparison.

Bacalar is worth visiting in June if you can live with rain. This is the rainy season in earnest: the normals for the nearest stations put June among the wettest months of the year, with storms on 10 to 13 days. In return you get the quietest docks of the year before the summer holidays, warm water, the longest daylight of the year and hotel rates that are the same as or lower than in the dry season.

What typically happens is rain that comes and goes rather than days that wash out. Guests on rainy-season tours describe "impressive rain" that did not stop a good trip, storms that a crew navigated around, and skies that made the lagoon's colours look more dramatic against the dark cloud. The trick is flexibility: plan the lagoon for the morning, keep a spare day, and let the afternoon storms pass.

In our view, June suits couples, photographers who like big skies and travellers who want Bacalar at its quietest and are happy to work around the weather. It is less ideal for a short trip that hinges on one perfect blue-sky boat day, and for anyone tied to school holidays, which do not start until July.

Where to Stay on a June Trip to Bacalar

June is the last low-priced month before the summer holidays. In our sample most hotels charged the same as in early March and about one in three was cheaper, including Cristalino at about $154 a night against $182. Rates rose sharply from July 1, so if your trip straddles the two months, the June nights are the cheap ones.

In the rainy season a lagoon-front hotel with its own dock lets you swim whenever the weather clears, without depending on a tour slot. Town hotels cost less and put you a short walk from restaurants and the tour docks. Our guide to the best hotels in Bacalar ranks 12 options on both sides.

There is no long-term weather station in Bacalar itself. Temperatures and rain here come from the 1991 to 2020 normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional at Chetumal, about 22 km south on the same coast, and Chacchoben, about 35 km north and further inland. We found no official lagoon temperature series; climate guides put the water around 28°C in June.

Temperature and Humidity

June is hot and humid. Afternoon highs reach about 32.5 to 33.5°C (90 to 92°F) at the three stations, and nights stay warm, from about 23°C (73°F) inland at Chacchoben to 25.5°C (78°F) on the coast at Chetumal. Rain cools the air for an hour or two, then the humidity returns. Mornings remain the most comfortable time of day.

Rain Pattern

June is the first peak of the rainy season. The normals give 117 to 205 mm on about 10 to 13 days, about double May and among the wettest months of the year alongside September and October. Most of that falls in storms rather than steady all-day rain: a June 2026 guest on DayTour's private pontoon described "la lluvia impresionante" (impressive rain) and still called the lagoon beautiful, and in the wetter months DayTour has offered guests the option to move a stormy early tour to a later slot.

Lagoon Conditions

The lagoon stays warm and swimmable. Its colours depend on the sky: bright between storms, flatter under heavy cloud, and sometimes at their most striking against dark storm clouds, as one October 2025 guest put it after a stormy-sky tour. We found no reviews describing murky water after rain on our shortlist's tours. Mornings are usually calm; wind gusts arrive with storms.

Crowds and Prices in June

We priced the same 16 hotels for every night from May 29 to July 2, 2027, and compared each with its own rate for March 1 to 11.

  • June 1 to 30: flat, weekends included. The median was about $121 every night. Eight of the 16 hotels charged the same as in early March (within 2%), 5 were 12% to 25% cheaper and 3 were dearer.
  • July 1 and 2: the jump. The median rose to about $151 and $158, and 5 of the 16 hotels charged more than in early March, ahead of the summer holidays.

There are no national holidays in June, and Mexico's school year, as reported from the SEP calendar, runs to July 9, 2027, so the lagoon is at its quietest. Most people don't realize how sharp the change at the start of July is in our sample: if your dates are flexible, ending a trip on June 30 rather than starting one on July 1 is one of the easiest savings of the summer. Tours kept the same prices as earlier in the year, with plenty of open dates.

Green Season: Long Days, Warm Water and Big Skies

June's draw is the combination of quiet, warmth and light. The rain is real, but so are the advantages of travelling just before the summer holidays.

The longest days of the year

Sunrise comes at about 6:15 am in early June, the earliest of the year, and sunset at about 7:26 pm on June 1, rising to 7:34 pm by June 30, among the latest of the year. That gives you two calm windows on the water, dawn and early evening, around the hot and stormy middle of the day.

Quiet docks

With no holidays and the school year still running, June has some of the emptiest swim stops of the year. Small sailboats and private pontoons are easy to book a day or two ahead, which makes it simple to move a tour when the weather turns.

Storm light

The lagoon after a storm can be spectacular. A rainy-season guest on DayTour's private pontoon described one of the most contrasted views of the lagoon's colours "against the dark grey clouds", and another described the sun coming out after a morning of rain to turquoise water and perfect swimming temperatures. Photographers who like drama in the sky may prefer June to the flat blue of March.

Rain, Storms and Hurricane Season: What to Plan Around

Risk level: moderate to high for rain, low for hurricanes. June brings regular storms and the official start of the Atlantic hurricane season on June 1, though the most active part of the season is usually August to October.

  • Storms: expect rain on 10 to 13 days, mostly as storms that pass. One August 2025 sailboat group was "hit by a rain storm" and praised a crew that "kept their cool". Book the morning departures, which are usually drier.
  • Cancellations: every tour on our shortlist offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and operators decide on the day whether it is safe to go out. Keep a spare day.
  • Heat and humidity: afternoons of 32 to 34°C with high humidity; ruins and long walks are hard going, and paths can be muddy after rain.
  • Tropical storms: early-season storms are possible but not common; check the forecast in the week before you travel and consider travel insurance.

We think the tradeoff works for flexible travellers: rates hold at dry-season levels or below, the docks are nearly empty, and a passing storm usually costs you an hour rather than a day.

Shared sail: June's pick

Wild Wave's three-hour shared sail visits Cenote Negro, the Pirates' Channel and Bird Island with swim stops, fruit and beer, for about $45 per person, at 11 am and 3 pm daily for up to eight guests per booking. At 4.96 across 1,670 reviews it is the most-reviewed tour on our shortlist. In June we'd book the 11 am departure: it is brighter for the colours and usually ahead of the afternoon storms, and the free cancellation makes it easy to move. Our Bacalar boat tours guide compares it with the pontoons and private boats.

Sunrise paddle

ViveSUP's sunrise route through the Pirates' Channel into Laguna Mariscal and the mangroves, rated 4.99 across 697 reviews, starts at 5:30 am and costs about $52 per person. In June it is the calmest, coolest part of the day. Our Bacalar paddleboard and kayak guide compares it with seven other paddles.

Morning boats and Ichkabal

DayTour Bacalar's shared boat with cenote stops is $29 at 8 am, and its private Bacalar 101 pontoon is $215 per boat for up to six; neither runs on Wednesdays. Mehran's Ichkabal and Los Rápidos day runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8 am from about $70; in June the full day with the afternoon float is the one to book.

More June Activities Worth Knowing About

We do not have dedicated guides for these yet, but they fit a June trip well:

  • Fuerte de San Felipe: the 18th-century fort above the lagoon in the centre of town, with a small museum about the pirates who raided the area; a good plan for a rainy afternoon.
  • Cenote Azul: a very deep, round cenote on the southern edge of town with a restaurant on its rim, easy to time around the storms.
  • Los Rápidos on your own: the river channel south of town where you float with the current past stromatolites; quiet before the summer holidays.
  • Floating yoga: Amir AdvenTours runs a 6 am class on a floating platform for about $25. It has only 16 reviews and the newest is from June 2026, so read recent feedback before booking.
  • Sunset from a lagoon club: with sunset close to 7:30 pm, the evening is often the clearest time to sit on a dock in town.

Our Take

The most useful number for June is not the rainfall but the date July 1. Our hotel sample sits at dry-season levels or below for every June night and then jumps on the first of July, so a flexible June trip gets the quietest lagoon of the summer at the lowest prices, rain included.

Tips for Visiting Bacalar in June

  • Book the water for the morning. The sunrise paddle and the 8 am and 11 am boats are usually ahead of the afternoon storms.
  • Keep a spare day. Every tour on our shortlist has free cancellation up to 24 hours before; use it.
  • End your trip by June 30 if you can. Hotel rates in our sample jumped on July 1.
  • Pack a dry bag and a light rain layer. Storms can arrive quickly on the open lagoon.
  • Cover up instead of sunscreen. Operators ask swimmers not to wear sunscreen in the lagoon; one sailboat guest got "quite sunburnt" without a long-sleeved top.
  • Check the weekday. DayTour Bacalar's boats and ViveSUP's paddles do not run on Wednesdays, and the Ichkabal tour runs only Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Bacalar in July guide covers the summer holidays, family boats and the rate rise from July 1, and our Bacalar in May guide covers the hot, quieter month before the rains build, and our Bacalar in March guide covers the driest month of the year. For everything else to do in town, whatever the month, see our guide to the best things to do in Bacalar.

How We Put This Guide Together

Weather figures come from the 1991 to 2020 climate normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional for Chetumal and Chacchoben, the nearest official stations to Bacalar, and sunrise and sunset times are calculated for Bacalar's coordinates and time zone and checked against an online almanac. Hotel prices are live rates for the same 16 Bacalar hotels on every night from May 29 to July 2, 2027, pulled on October 22, 2026, and compared hotel by hotel with the same hotels' rates for March 1 to 11. Tour prices, schedules and June availability were checked against live booking data on the same day, and every tour here has guest reviews from the past six months except the floating yoga class, which we flag. The conditions details come from reading rainy-season reviews of each tour, including the critical ones. School calendar dates are from press reports of Mexico's 2026 to 2027 SEP calendar.

Does it rain a lot in Bacalar in June?+

Yes, June is one of the wettest months. The normals give 117 to 205 mm on about 10 to 13 days, about double May. Most of it comes in storms rather than all-day rain, so tours usually still run, and every tour on our shortlist has free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

A sunrise paddle through the Pirates' Channel, a morning sail or boat tour before the afternoon storms, a swim at Cenote Azul between showers and the San Felipe fort museum on a rainy afternoon.
