July is Bacalar's summer-holiday month: hotel rates rise from July 1, the docks fill with families, and the weather is hot with storms on 9 to 12 days, though less rain than June. The mornings, and a private boat for groups, are the way to enjoy it.

What You Should Know

  • Hotel rates rise from July 1. Comparing each of 15 hotels with its own June rate, 8 charged the same in July, 6 charged 6% to 67% more and 1 charged less. Many of the hotels that discounted in spring go back up for the summer.
  • July has less rain than June. At all three nearby official weather stations, July rainfall drops well below June's (62 to 128 mm on 9 to 12 days, against 117 to 205 mm), a mid-summer dip often called the canícula in Mexico. It is still hot and humid.
  • It is a family month. Mexico's school year, as reported from the SEP calendar, ends on July 9, 2027, and July reviews of the private pontoon and shared boats are full of family trips. For four or more, the private Bacalar 101 boat at $215 for up to six beats paying per seat.
  • Go early. A July guest on the sunrise paddle was glad to be "the first in the water which was so peaceful as it gets busy later on in the day", and families on the private boat recommend the 8 am departure with small children.

Bacalar in July: The Honest Picture

⭐ Best July window: the first week, before the school holidays. Hotel rates in our sample rise from July 1, but the lagoon is quieter until Mexico's school year ends on July 9. If you can only travel in the holidays, book early mornings on the water and a hotel that kept its June rate.

💰 July hotel prices (Bacalar, hotels with 80+ guest reviews):
Compared with each hotel's own June rate: 8 of 15 the same · 6 of 15 dearer by 6–67% · 1 of 15 cheaper
Live rates for the same 15 hotels, each priced for every night from 28 June to 2 August 2027, two adults, one night, cheapest meal plan, before taxes, pulled 22 October 2026. Their median rose from about $106 on June 30 to $148 on July 1 and stayed there all month; with 15 hotels the median is a rough guide, so we lead with the per-hotel comparison.

Bacalar is good in July, especially for families, as long as you plan around the summer holidays. The water is warm, the mornings are calm, and the weather is a little kinder than June: the official normals for the three nearest stations all show noticeably less rain in July, the mid-summer dip that often settles over the Yucatán.

The trade is price and company. Hotel rates in our sample rise on July 1, and Mexico's school year, as reported from the SEP calendar, ends on July 9, after which the lagoon fills with families on holiday. Most people don't realize how much of the July price rise comes from hotels that had discounted in spring returning to full price: some lagoon-front rooms that were the bargains of April to June are 30% or more dearer in July.

In our view, July suits families above all: warm, shallow water, private boats priced per group and long evenings. Couples who want the lagoon to themselves are better off in May or June, or in the first week of July before the school holidays begin.

Where to Stay on a July Trip to Bacalar

Compare before you book in July. In our sample about four in ten hotels charged more than in June, by 6% to 67%, while just over half kept the same rate. Several of the biggest jumps were at hotels that had cut prices in spring, so last season's bargain may not be this summer's.

For families, a lagoon-front hotel with a dock and shallow water to swim from is worth the money in July. Our guide to the best hotels in Bacalar ranks 12 options and lists the five that accept children, and our Bacalar for families guide covers ages and child fares.

There is no long-term weather station in Bacalar itself. Temperatures and rain here come from the 1991 to 2020 normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional at Chetumal, about 22 km south on the same coast, and Chacchoben, about 35 km north and further inland. We found no official lagoon temperature series; climate guides put the water around 28°C in July.

Temperature and Humidity

July is hot and humid, with afternoon highs of about 33 to 34°C (91 to 93°F) at the three stations and warm nights of about 23°C (73°F) inland at Chacchoben and 25°C (78°F) on the coast at Chetumal. Dawn and the hour before sunset are the comfortable times; the middle of the day belongs in the water.

Rain Pattern

July is wetter than the dry season but drier than June. The normals give 62 to 128 mm on about 9 to 12 days, against 117 to 205 mm on 10 to 13 days in June, at all three stations. This mid-summer dip, often called the canícula in Mexico, usually gives way to wetter weather again by September. Rain still tends to arrive as storms, and guests regularly describe tours that went ahead around them.

Lagoon Conditions

The water is warm and swimmable all day. Mornings are usually calm; afternoons can be still or gusty around storms. One July 2025 group on DayTour's shared boat noted "weinig wind" (little wind) and still managed a short sail, so July afternoons are not reliably breezy the way May's are.

Crowds and Prices in July

We priced the same 15 hotels for every night from June 28 to August 2, 2027, and compared each with its own June rate.

  • June 30 to July 1: the jump. The median rose from about $106 on June 30 to $148 on July 1, and stayed there every night of the month, weekends included.
  • July 1 to 31, hotel by hotel: 8 of the 15 charged the same as in June, 6 charged 6% to 67% more and 1 charged less. The biggest rises were at hotels that had discounted in spring.
  • Late July: most hotels held their early-July rate, but 3 of the 15 charged more in the second half of the month.
  • Into August: rates in our sample stayed at July levels on August 1 and 2.

Crowds follow the school calendar. Mexico's school year, as reported from the SEP calendar, ends on July 9, 2027, so the busiest stretch on the lagoon is from mid-July. A July 2025 guest on the sunrise paddle put it simply: be first in the water, because it gets busy later in the day. Tours kept the same prices as the rest of the year, with open dates throughout July.

Summer Holidays on the Lagoon: Family Boats and Long Evenings

July's draw is a warm, shallow, calm lagoon at exactly the time families can travel. The way to enjoy it is to get out early and keep your own pace.

Private boats for families

The private Bacalar 101 pontoon costs the same for two people as for six ($215 at 8 am), so a family of four or five pays less per head than on most shared tours and sets its own schedule. July reviews of the private boat are mostly families: one parent with small children recommended the 8 am tour and praised a guide who was kind with the little ones, and the route includes a swim stop shallow enough to stand in.

Early starts beat the crowds

Sunrise comes at about 6:20 am on July 1 and 6:30 am on July 31, and ViveSUP's paddle starts at 5:30 am. The first hours are the calmest and the emptiest, and families on paddle tours in July describe it as a highlight. DayTour's 8 am boats are the cheapest of the day as well as the quietest.

Long evenings

Sunset comes at about 7:34 pm at the start of the month and 7:29 pm at the end, close to the latest of the year, so an evening swim from a dock after the heat breaks is easy to fit in.

Busier Docks, Higher Rates and Summer Storms

Risk level: moderate. July's downsides are mostly about other people and prices, with storms as a background risk.

  • Busier docks: from mid-July the popular stops get crowded by late morning. Book the 8 am boats or the sunrise paddle.
  • Higher rates: about four in ten hotels in our sample charged more than in June. Compare at least three similar hotels before booking.
  • Storms: rain on about 9 to 12 days, usually as storms that pass. Every tour on our shortlist has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and one July 2025 family on DayTour's shared boat was able to move their date when their son was ill.
  • Hurricane season: tropical storms are possible from June, with the most active months usually August to October. Check the forecast in the week before travelling.

We think the tradeoff is fair for families: the lagoon is warm, safe and shallow, and an early start avoids most of the crowds.

Private pontoon: July's pick

DayTour Bacalar's Bacalar 101 is a private three-hour pontoon tour of the lagoon's main stops, rated 4.96 across 1,137 reviews. The price is per boat: $215 at 8 am, $259 at 11 am or 3 pm and $308 for the four-hour sunset tour, the same for two people as for six, and $250 for eight at 8 am. It includes a bilingual guide, beers, water and snacks, but not towels, and it does not run on Wednesdays. In July we'd book it for any family of four or more, at 8 am. Our Bacalar boat tours guide compares it with the shared boats and sailboats.

Sunrise paddle and shared boats

ViveSUP's sunrise route through the Pirates' Channel into Laguna Mariscal, rated 4.99 across 697 reviews, starts at 5:30 am for about $52 per person and takes children from six. DayTour's shared boat with cenote stops is $29 at 8 am, and Wild Wave's shared sail about $45 at 11 am and 3 pm. Our Bacalar paddleboard and kayak guide compares the paddles.

Ichkabal and Los Rápidos

Mehran's small-group day runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8 am with hotel pickup, from about $70. In July the full day that ends floating at Los Rápidos is the one to book; the climb alone is hard going in the heat.

More July Activities Worth Knowing About

We do not have dedicated guides for these yet, but they fit a July trip well:

  • Cenote Azul: a very deep, round cenote on the southern edge of town with a restaurant on its rim, a cool afternoon swim; expect company in the holidays.
  • Los Rápidos on your own: the river channel south of town where you float with the current past stromatolites; go early on holiday weekends.
  • Fuerte de San Felipe: the 18th-century fort above the lagoon in the centre of town, with a small museum about the pirates who raided the area; a good stop with children on a rainy hour.
  • Floating yoga: Amir AdvenTours runs a 6 am class on a floating platform for about $25. It has only 16 reviews and the newest is from June 2026, so read recent feedback before booking.
  • Sunset from a lagoon club: with sunset around 7:30 pm, an evening swim and dinner on a dock is the best part of a July day.

Our Take

The surprise in July is which hotels get dearer. Several of the lagoon-front rooms that were the best value from April to June were 30% or more dearer once July began, while plain in-town hotels did not move at all, so the bargain of the spring is not a safe bet for the summer.

Tips for Visiting Bacalar in July

  • Travel in the first week if you can. Hotel rates rise from July 1, but the school holidays do not start until after July 9.
  • Book a private boat for four or more. Bacalar 101 is $215 per boat for up to six at 8 am.
  • Be first on the water. Sunrise paddles and 8 am boats beat both the heat and the holiday crowds.
  • Compare hotels, not dates. In our sample, July rates were flat all month, but some hotels rose sharply from June and others not at all.
  • Cover up instead of sunscreen. Operators ask swimmers not to wear sunscreen in the lagoon; long-sleeved rash guards and hats for the whole family.
  • Check the weekday. DayTour Bacalar's boats and ViveSUP's paddles do not run on Wednesdays, and the Ichkabal tour runs only Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Bacalar in August guide covers the end of the summer holidays and the start of peak hurricane season, and our Bacalar in June guide covers the last low-priced month before the holidays, and our Bacalar in May guide covers the quiet start of the low season. How We Put This Guide Together

Weather figures come from the 1991 to 2020 climate normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional for Chetumal and Chacchoben, the nearest official stations to Bacalar, and sunrise and sunset times are calculated for Bacalar's coordinates and time zone and checked against an online almanac. Hotel prices are live rates for the same 15 Bacalar hotels on every night from June 28 to August 2, 2027, pulled on October 22, 2026, and compared hotel by hotel with the same hotels' June rates. Tour prices, schedules and July availability were checked against live booking data on the same day, and every tour here has guest reviews from the past six months except the floating yoga class, which we flag. The conditions details come from reading July reviews of each tour, including the critical ones. School calendar dates are from press reports of Mexico's 2026 to 2027 SEP calendar.
