August is Bacalar at its hottest and busiest with families, with rain building again and the most active part of the hurricane season beginning. The first half of the month carries summer-holiday rates; the last week is noticeably cheaper.

What You Should Know

  • August is among the hottest months, with afternoons of 33.5 to 34°C (92 to 93°F), and rain builds again after July's dip: about 11 to 12 days with rain and 94 to 179 mm, by the official normals for the nearest stations.
  • The first half of August is the summer peak. Comparing each of 16 hotels with its own July rate, most kept charging July prices to mid-August and three raised them further. In the last week, 5 of the 16 were cheaper than in July, by 5% to 66%, and only 2 were dearer.
  • August opens the most active part of the Atlantic hurricane season, which usually peaks from August to October. Hurricane Dean made landfall on this stretch of coast in August 2007. Watch the forecast, book refundable tours and consider travel insurance.
  • Heat on the water is the practical issue. An August guest on DayTour's boat advised: "Sit in the shade it gets very hot and you cannot wear sunscreen. Bring extra water." The 8 am departures are the coolest.

Bacalar in August: The Honest Picture

⭐ Best August window: August 23 to 31. In our sample a third of the hotels charge less than in July in the last week of August, and the lagoon gets quieter as the summer holidays wind down. Keep plans flexible: this is the start of peak hurricane season.

💰 August hotel prices (Bacalar, hotels with 80+ guest reviews):
Aug 1–15: 13 of 16 at July rates, 3 higher · Aug 26–31: 5 of 16 cheaper than July by 5–66%, 2 dearer, the rest unchanged
Live rates for the same 16 hotels, each priced for every night from 30 July to 2 September 2027, two adults, one night, cheapest meal plan, before taxes, pulled 22 October 2026, compared hotel by hotel with their own July rates. The median ran about $158 to $164 on most nights to mid-August and $122 from August 26; with 16 hotels it jumps between neighbours, so read it as a direction, not a price.

Bacalar is good in August for families who plan around the heat and the weather. The lagoon is warm and shallow, the mornings are calm and bright, and the private and shared boats are full of families making the most of the summer holidays. Most July and August reviews of the boat tours are family trips.

Three things make August harder than July. It is among the hottest months of the year, with afternoons of 33.5 to 34°C. The rain builds back up after July's mid-summer dip. And August opens the most active stretch of the Atlantic hurricane season, which usually runs to October; this coast is not immune, as Hurricane Dean showed when it made landfall here in August 2007. Most August days are simply hot, humid and stormy in the afternoon, but a week-long trip needs flexibility built in.

In our view, August suits families on school holidays who book early starts and refundable tours. The last week of the month is the best time for everyone else: several hotels in our sample cut their rates, and the lagoon begins to empty as the holidays end.

Where to Stay on an August Trip to Bacalar

Timing within the month matters more than in July. In our sample most hotels kept charging July rates to about mid-August, a few raised them further (including Puerta del Cielo, up about 24% in the first half of the month), and several dropped back in the second half. If your dates are flexible, the last week is the cheapest.

For families, a lagoon-front hotel with a dock and shallow water is worth the money in August, and good air conditioning matters more than ever. Our guide to the best hotels in Bacalar ranks 12 options and lists the five that accept children.

There is no long-term weather station in Bacalar itself. Temperatures and rain here come from the 1991 to 2020 normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional at Chetumal, about 22 km south on the same coast, and Chacchoben, about 35 km north and further inland. We found no official lagoon temperature series; climate guides put the water around 28°C in August.

Temperature and Humidity

August is the hottest month of the year at Chetumal's main station, with an average high of 34.1°C, and the other two stations reach 33.5°C. Nights stay warm, from about 23°C (73°F) inland at Chacchoben to 25°C (77°F) on the coast. With high humidity on top, the middle of the day is genuinely draining; the first hours after sunrise are the time to be active.

Rain Pattern

Rain builds back up after July's dip. The normals give 94 to 179 mm on about 11 to 12 days, more than July at all three stations, and September and October are wetter still. Storms typically pass: an August 2025 group on Wild Wave's sailboat was "hit by a rain storm" and praised a crew that "kept their cool", and a guest on DayTour's boat earlier in the year described a captain who switched the plan to a swim when it started raining.

Lagoon Conditions

The lagoon is warm and calm in the morning, and the shallow swim stops (knee-deep to waist-deep, as one family describes the Pirates' Channel stop) are ideal for children. The sun is fierce by late morning, and there is little shade on most boats.

Crowds and Prices in August: First Half vs Second Half

We priced the same 16 hotels for every night from July 30 to September 2, 2027, and compared each with its own July rate.

  • August 1 to 15: the summer peak. Thirteen of the 16 hotels charged their July rate or within a few percent of it, and 3 charged more, including Puerta del Cielo at about 24% above July. The median ran about $158 to $164 on most nights.
  • August 16 to 31: easing. Three hotels that had raised rates for the summer dropped back by 14% to 35%, while two of the priciest stayed high.
  • August 26 to 31: the cheapest stretch of the month. Compared with July, 5 of the 16 hotels were cheaper by 5% to 66%, 2 were dearer and the rest unchanged. The median fell to about $122, but with 16 hotels that overstates the change for the typical hotel.

Mexico's long summer school break covers most of August, and family reviews dominate the month on every boat tour we looked at. A sailboat guest in August 2025 appreciated a crew who "brought us to a calmer spot when others were way too busy". Most people don't realize that the end of the holidays, not the start, is where the summer discounts appear: in our sample, a third of the hotels charged less in the last week of August than they had in July.

Late Summer on the Lagoon: Family Days and a Cheaper Last Week

August's draw is the same as July's, a warm and shallow lagoon at holiday time, with one extra advantage: the end of the month is noticeably cheaper.

Shallow swim stops for children

DayTour's shared boat spends about an hour in the water at the Pirates' Channel, where, as a July 2026 guest put it, the lagoon "goes from knee deep to waist deep making it perfect to be in for little ones". At $29 per person at 8 am it is the cheapest boat on the lagoon for a family, and the private Bacalar 101 pontoon at $215 for up to six suits larger groups.

Early starts

Sunrise comes at about 6:31 am on August 1 and 6:38 am on August 31. ViveSUP's sunrise paddle starts at 5:30 am and takes children from six; the 8 am boats follow. Both beat the heat, the storms and the busiest hours at the swim stops.

The last week

Sunset moves from about 7:28 pm to 7:09 pm through the month. By the last week, several hotels in our sample have cut their rates and the docks are emptying, which makes August 23 to 31 one of the better-value weeks of the summer for anyone not tied to the holidays.

Peak Hurricane Season Begins: What to Plan Around

Risk level: moderate. August opens the most active part of the Atlantic hurricane season, which usually runs from August to October. Most August days are simply hot with afternoon storms, but a tropical system can disrupt a trip, and this coast has been hit before: Hurricane Dean made landfall near Majahual, south-east of Bacalar, in August 2007.

  • Before you go: check the forecast in the week before travel, and consider travel insurance that covers weather.
  • Tours: every tour on our shortlist offers free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and operators decide on the day whether it is safe to go out.
  • Heat: sit in the shade on the boats, drink more than you think you need, and do any walking or ruins at 8 am.
  • Sun: operators ask guests not to wear sunscreen in the lagoon to protect the stromatolites; long-sleeved rash guards and hats for everyone.

We think the tradeoff is acceptable for families with fixed holidays, provided the bookings are flexible. If your dates can move, late August or the dry season is the safer choice.

Shared boat with cenotes: August's pick

DayTour Bacalar's three-hour shared boat tour visits the stromatolites, a cenote, the Pirates' Channel and Bird Island, with about an hour in the water, beers, fruit drinks and snacks, for $29 per person at 8 am or $39 at 11 am and 3 pm. At 4.93 across 1,321 reviews it is one of the best-reviewed tours on the lagoon, and August is its busiest month for reviews, most of them from families. Children under four ride free, and children from four to twelve pay a child fare of $26 at 8 am. It does not run on Wednesdays, and towels are not included. We'd book the 8 am departure and sit in the shade between swims.

Private pontoon and sunrise paddle

For a group of four or more, DayTour's private Bacalar 101 pontoon is $215 per boat for up to six at 8 am. ViveSUP's sunrise paddle, rated 4.99 across 697 reviews, starts at 5:30 am for about $52 per person and takes children from six. Our Bacalar boat tours guide and Bacalar paddleboard and kayak guide compare all the options.

Ichkabal and Los Rápidos

Mehran's small-group day runs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8 am with hotel pickup, from about $70. In August we'd only book the full day that ends floating at Los Rápidos, and only for travellers comfortable with real heat.

More August Activities Worth Knowing About

We do not have dedicated guides for these yet, but they fit an August trip well:

  • Cenote Azul: a very deep, round cenote on the southern edge of town with a restaurant on its rim; a cool afternoon swim, busy in the holidays.
  • Los Rápidos on your own: the river channel south of town where you float with the current past stromatolites; go early on weekends.
  • Fuerte de San Felipe: the 18th-century fort above the lagoon in the centre of town, with a small museum about the pirates who raided the area; good for a storm hour with children.
  • Floating yoga: Amir AdvenTours runs a 6 am class on a floating platform for about $25, for ages 12 and up. It has only 16 reviews and the newest is from June 2026, so read recent feedback before booking.
  • Sunset from a lagoon club: with sunset after 7 pm, an evening swim from a dock is the coolest part of an August day.

Our Take

The pattern we did not expect in August is where the discounts show up. In our sample, the first half of the month carried full summer rates at almost every hotel, while in the last week a third of the hotels charged less than they had in July, some by a quarter or more, so a family with any flexibility gets the same warm lagoon for less by travelling at the very end of the holidays.

Tips for Visiting Bacalar in August

  • Aim for the last week. In our sample, 5 of 16 hotels charged less from August 26 than in July, and none of the cheaper in-town hotels went up.
  • Book refundable. Every tour on our shortlist has free cancellation up to 24 hours before; in peak hurricane season, use it.
  • Go at 8 am. The first boats are the coolest and cheapest, and beat the busiest hours at the swim stops.
  • Sit in the shade and bring water. An August guest's advice for the boats, where it "gets very hot".
  • Cover up instead of sunscreen. Operators ask swimmers not to wear sunscreen in the lagoon; long-sleeved rash guards and hats for the whole family.
  • Check the weekday. DayTour Bacalar's boats and ViveSUP's paddles do not run on Wednesdays, and the Ichkabal tour runs only Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Bacalar in September guide covers the quietest, wettest month and the peak of hurricane season, and our Bacalar in July guide covers the start of the summer holidays, and our Bacalar in June guide covers the last low-priced month before them. How We Put This Guide Together

Weather figures come from the 1991 to 2020 climate normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional for Chetumal and Chacchoben, the nearest official stations to Bacalar, and sunrise and sunset times are calculated for Bacalar's coordinates and time zone and checked against an online almanac. Hotel prices are live rates for the same 16 Bacalar hotels on every night from July 30 to September 2, 2027, pulled on October 22, 2026, and compared hotel by hotel with the same hotels' July rates. Tour prices, schedules and August availability were checked against live booking data on the same day, and every tour here has guest reviews from the past six months except the floating yoga class, which we flag. The conditions details come from reading August reviews of each tour, including the critical ones.
