September is Bacalar's quietest and wettest stretch: rain on 13 to 15 days, the peak of hurricane season and empty docks once the summer holidays are over. Hotel rates are flat all month, and a few lagoon-front hotels are at their cheapest of the year.

What You Should Know

  • September is among the wettest months of the year, with rain on about 13 to 15 days and 92 to 207 mm in total, by the official normals for the nearest stations. Only October matches it for rainy days.
  • It is the heart of the Atlantic hurricane season, which usually peaks from August to October. Most September days are hot and stormy rather than dangerous, but book refundable tours, watch the forecast and consider travel insurance.
  • Hotel rates are flat all month, with no Independence Day bump. Comparing each of 14 hotels with its own July rate, 6 were cheaper by 7% to 50% and 6 unchanged; against early March, 4 were 15% to 33% cheaper and the rest within a few percent.
  • The summer holidays are over, so the lagoon is quiet. Independence Day (Thursday, September 16, 2027) is a public holiday, with celebrations on the evening of the 15th. Every tour on our shortlist had open departures that week.

Bacalar in September: The Honest Picture

⭐ Best September window: any week, as long as you are flexible. Hotel rates in our sample are flat every night, with no bump for Independence Day, and the docks are quiet all month. Plan the lagoon for the morning, keep two flexible days and book everything with free cancellation.

Live rates for the same 14 hotels, each priced for every night from 30 August to 3 October 2027, two adults, one night, cheapest meal plan, before taxes, pulled 22 October 2026. Their median sat at about $114 to $115 every September night. Fewer hotels quoted September rates than in spring (35 to 40 against about 50), so some properties may close or limit rooms in the low season.

Bacalar is worth it in September only if you are flexible. This is the wettest stretch of the year, with storms on 13 to 15 days, and the peak of the hurricane season. In return you get the lagoon almost to yourself: the summer holidays are over, the docks are quiet, and the water is as warm as it gets.

What typically happens is a stormy morning that clears, or a bright morning that clouds over by afternoon. September reviews describe tours that went ahead "aún con llovizna" (even with drizzle), a guide who offered to move a stormy early tour to a later slot, and a rainy, overcast trip that one guest still called a great time. Hotel rates are flat all month, and a handful of lagoon-front hotels in our sample were at their cheapest of the year.

In our view, September suits couples and solo travellers with flexible plans who value quiet over guaranteed sunshine. It is not the month for a short trip that hinges on one perfect boat day, or for anyone who would rather not travel in peak hurricane season.

Where to Stay on a September Trip to Bacalar

September is a good month to book a lagoon-front room on a budget. In our sample rates were flat every night, with no Independence Day bump, and a handful of lagoon-front hotels were at their lowest of the year, including Cristalino at about $155 a night against $182 in early March. Fewer hotels quoted September rates than in spring, so check that your first choice is open.

In the rainiest month, a lagoon-front hotel with its own dock lets you swim whenever the weather clears without depending on a tour slot, and a covered terrace makes a storm pleasant to watch. Our guide to the best hotels in Bacalar ranks 12 options on both sides.

There is no long-term weather station in Bacalar itself. Temperatures and rain here come from the 1991 to 2020 normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional at Chetumal, about 22 km south on the same coast, and Chacchoben, about 35 km north and further inland. We found no official lagoon temperature series; climate guides put the water around 27°C in September.

Temperature and Humidity

September is still hot: afternoon highs of about 33 to 34°C (91 to 93°F) at the three stations, with nights of about 23°C (73°F) inland at Chacchoben and 24 to 25°C (75 to 76°F) on the coast at Chetumal. Humidity is high, and the air feels heavy before a storm and briefly fresher after it.

Rain Pattern

September and October are the wettest stretch of Bacalar's year by number of rainy days: the normals give about 13 to 15 days with rain in September and 92 to 207 mm in total, depending on the station. Rain still tends to come as storms rather than all-day downpours, though a passing tropical system can bring a day or two of steady rain. Reviews from September describe drizzle, a stormy early start and a rainy, overcast tour, all of which went ahead.

Lagoon Conditions

The water is warm and calm early in the day; storms bring gusts and short spells of chop. The colours depend on the sky: bright when the sun breaks through, grey under heavy cloud. We found no reviews of our shortlist's tours describing murky water after rain.

Crowds and Prices in September

We priced the same 14 hotels for every night from August 30 to October 3, 2027, and compared each with its own July and early-March rates.

  • Every September night: flat, weekends included. The median was about $114 to $115 on every night of the month.
  • Compared with July: 6 of the 14 hotels were cheaper, by 7% to 50%, 6 were unchanged and 2 were dearer. The biggest falls were at lagoon-front hotels that had charged summer rates.
  • Compared with early March: 4 of the 14 were 15% to 33% cheaper and the rest were within a few percent, so for most hotels September costs about the same as the dry season.
  • Independence Day (September 15 to 16): no bump. No hotel in our sample charged more than 5% above its usual September rate on either night.

Most people don't realize that low season here mostly means low crowds rather than low prices: the majority of hotels keep the same rate all year, and only a handful discount. What does change is availability. Fewer hotels quoted September rates than in spring, so book your first choice early and check it is open. Tours kept their usual prices and had open dates throughout the month.

The Quietest Month: An Empty Lagoon for Flexible Travellers

September's draw is simple: the lagoon is almost empty. With the summer holidays over and the dry-season visitors not yet back, you can have swim stops, docks and channels largely to yourself.

Small groups and private tours

With fewer visitors, shared tours often run with small groups, and the private boats and sunrise paddles are easy to book a day or two ahead, which makes it simple to move a tour around the weather. A September guest on DayTour's shared boat was offered a later slot when an early storm rolled in.

Earlier sunsets, still-early sunrises

Sunset moves from about 7:08 pm on September 1 to 6:43 pm on September 30, and sunrise from about 6:38 am to 6:43 am. ViveSUP's 5:30 am paddle still sets off in the dark and reaches the far lagoons as the sky lights up, usually the calmest part of a stormy day.

Independence Day

Mexico's Independence Day, September 16, is a public holiday, and on the evening of the 15th towns across the country hold the traditional "grito" celebration. In 2027 the 16th falls on a Thursday. All the tours on our shortlist that run on Thursdays had open departures that day.

Peak Hurricane Season: What to Plan Around

Risk level: moderate to high for weather disruption. September sits in the heart of the Atlantic hurricane season. Most days are simply hot with storms, but a tropical system can close the lagoon to boats for a day or more, and this coast has been hit before: Hurricane Dean made landfall near Majahual, south-east of Bacalar, in August 2007.

  • Before you go: check the forecast in the week before travel and consider travel insurance that covers weather.
  • Tours: every tour on our shortlist has free cancellation up to 24 hours before, and operators decide on the day whether it is safe to go out.
  • Flexibility: keep two spare days in a week-long trip and put the most important lagoon tour early.
  • Heat and sun: sit in the shade on the boats and cover up; operators ask swimmers not to wear sunscreen in the lagoon.

We think September is worth it only for travellers who are comfortable with that uncertainty. If your dates are fixed and the trip is short, the dry season from December to April is the safer bet.

Sunrise paddle: September's pick

ViveSUP's sunrise route through the Pirates' Channel into Laguna Mariscal and the mangroves is the best-rated paddle tour in Bacalar, at 4.99 across 697 reviews. It starts at 5:30 am and costs about $52 per person, with breakfast, coffee, a short sound-bowl meditation and GoPro photos, and it runs every day except Wednesday. In September the early start is usually the calmest, driest window of the day, and an October 2026 review from first-time paddlers in their fifties shows how gentle it can be. Our Bacalar paddleboard and kayak guide compares it with seven other paddles.

Morning boats

DayTour Bacalar's shared boat with cenote stops is $29 per person at 8 am, and its private Bacalar 101 pontoon is $215 per boat for up to six; neither runs on Wednesdays. Wild Wave's shared sail is about $45 per person at 11 am and 3 pm. Our Bacalar boat tours guide compares them all.

For a rainy afternoon

The San Felipe fort and its pirate museum are the best indoor plan in town, and Cenote Azul is easy to time around the storms. We'd skip the Ichkabal ruins this month: the jungle is hot, wet and muddy.

More September Activities Worth Knowing About

We do not have dedicated guides for these yet, but they fit a September trip well:

  • Fuerte de San Felipe: the 18th-century fort above the lagoon in the centre of town, with a small museum about the pirates who raided the area; the best plan for a stormy afternoon.
  • Cenote Azul: a very deep, round cenote on the southern edge of town with a restaurant on its rim, easy to fit between storms.
  • Los Rápidos on your own: the river channel south of town where you float with the current past stromatolites; quiet after the summer holidays.
  • Independence night: the "grito" celebrations on the evening of September 15 in town squares across Mexico.
  • Floating yoga: Amir AdvenTours runs a 6 am class on a floating platform for about $25. It has only 16 reviews and the newest is from June 2026, so read recent feedback before booking.

Our Take

September rewards travellers who treat the weather as a scheduling problem rather than a reason to stay away. The lagoon is at its emptiest, operators readily move tours around storms, and the early morning is usually clear, so a trip with two spare days and every booking refundable gets the quietest Bacalar of the year.

Tips for Visiting Bacalar in September

  • Book everything refundable. Every tour on our shortlist has free cancellation up to 24 hours before; in peak hurricane season, use it.
  • Keep two spare days. Put your most important lagoon tour early in the trip so a stormy day can be absorbed.
  • Go at dawn. The sunrise paddle and 8 am boats are usually the calmest, driest part of the day.
  • Watch the forecast. Check in the week before you travel, and consider travel insurance that covers weather.
  • Pack for rain and sun. A light rain layer, a dry bag and a long-sleeved rash guard (operators ask swimmers not to wear sunscreen in the lagoon).
  • Check the weekday. DayTour Bacalar's boats and ViveSUP's paddles do not run on Wednesdays, and the Ichkabal tour runs only Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Bacalar in October guide covers the wettest month by rainfall and the short-notice deals that come with it, and our Bacalar in August guide covers the end of the summer holidays, and our Bacalar in March guide covers the driest month of the year. How We Put This Guide Together

Weather figures come from the 1991 to 2020 climate normals of Mexico's Servicio Meteorológico Nacional for Chetumal and Chacchoben, the nearest official stations to Bacalar, and sunrise and sunset times are calculated for Bacalar's coordinates and time zone and checked against an online almanac. Hotel prices are live rates for the same 14 Bacalar hotels on every night from August 30 to October 3, 2027, pulled on October 22, 2026, and compared hotel by hotel with the same hotels' July and early-March rates. Tour prices, schedules and September availability, including Independence Day, were checked against live booking data on the same day, and every tour here has guest reviews from the past six months except the floating yoga class, which we flag. The conditions details come from reading rainy-season reviews of each tour, including the critical ones.
