Nine day trips from Tulum, each with the single best-reviewed tour for it: drive times, verified prices, what is and is not included, and which trip suits which traveler.

What You Should Know

  • Nine day trips, each with its top-rated tour: Maya ruins at Chichén Itzá, Cobá, Ek Balam and Muyil, Sian Ka'an wildlife, Akumal turtles, cenotes, summer whale sharks and a jungle adventure park.
  • Akumal, Muyil and the cenotes near town are under 30 minutes away and fit a morning; Cobá is 45 minutes, while Chichén Itzá, Punta Allen and the whale-shark marina take 2 to 3 hours each way.
  • Top tours cost $80 to $254 per person, and admission varies: the Chichén Itzá small group includes every fee, Ek Balam adds $35 at the gate, and whale sharks exclude government fees.
  • Sea conditions decide the boat days. The Sian Ka'an reef snorkel is regularly dropped when it is rough, and whale-shark boats often share a shark, so each pair gets about two short jumps.

Day Trips from Tulum: How to Choose

Most of the best day trips from Tulum are shorter than the same trips from Cancún, because Tulum already sits at the southern end of the Riviera Maya: Cobá is about 45 minutes away, Akumal's turtle bay about 25 minutes, and the Muyil entrance to the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve about 25 minutes south. This hub compares nine different day trips, each represented by the single best-reviewed tour we could verify for it, with the drive time, price, and who it suits, so you can pick one or two without reading nine separate guides.

This page answers one question: which day trip from Tulum should you choose? Once you have picked one, our detailed guide for that trip answers the next one, which tour should you book?, by comparing every operator and route, such as Chichén Itzá tours from Tulum or Sian Ka'an tours compared. If you are still deciding how to split your days between town, beach and these Tulum excursions, start with our best things to do in Tulum guide.

What to Expect on a Full-Day Trip from Tulum

A full day trip from Tulum, such as Chichén Itzá or Cobá, follows a similar shape. Half-day trips to Akumal, the cenotes or Selva Maya compress it into a morning.

  1. 017:00–8:00 AM

    Tulum hotel pickup

The Mexico Kan Tours day trips leave Tulum at 7:00am (Chichén Itzá, Punta Allen) or 8:00am (Cobá), and the operator confirms your exact pickup time by email once you give your hotel.

  2. 02

    The drive

From 45 minutes to Cobá up to 2 to 2.5 hours to Chichén Itzá. Small-group vans carry water and snacks, and guides usually start the history talk on the way.

  3. 03

    The main site

Ruins with a guide, a boat through the Sian Ka'an lagoons, or the turtle snorkel. This is the part to protect from delays, so ask how long you will actually have there. On the Chichén Itzá small group, one recent guest reports about two hours at the ruins, and the early start means leaving as the crowds arrive.

  4. 04

    Cenote swim

Most full-day trips here add a cenote. Several cenotes ban phones, cameras or sunscreen, so expect to leave your phone in the van. Some require a full rinse, hair included, before you swim, and the Xux Ha cenote on the Chichén Itzá trip is reached down roughly 50 steep steps.

  5. 05

    Lunch

Included on most full days: in Valladolid on the Chichén Itzá trip, with a Maya family on the Cobá trip, in Punta Allen village on the Sian Ka'an trip. In reality, free time in Valladolid is short, enough for the main square and a few shops, and it is the stop guests most often say they could skip.

  6. 06

    Back in Tulum

Full days run 8 to 10 hours on the listing, longer for whale sharks and Ek Balam once transfers are counted. Plan a quiet evening.

Our take (pickup messages): Several of the harshest recent reviews on these trips come from guests who missed a pickup change sent the evening before, then lost the day and the fare. We would check WhatsApp and email the night before every tour, especially on early starts like whale sharks.

Our take (sea-dependent stops): The Sian Ka'an trips are the clearest case of a tour that can change on the day. Guests regularly describe the reef snorkel being dropped because the sea was too rough, while still rating the wildlife highly. If snorkeling is the main reason you are going, Akumal's sheltered bay is the safer bet.

Our take (sun at Akumal): Sunscreen is not allowed in Akumal Bay, and one recent guest describes the worst sunburn of their life on the backs of their legs. Wear a rash guard and leggings or board shorts rather than relying on cream applied at the hotel.

The 9 Best Day Trips from Tulum, Ranked

We ranked these on how much each trip gives you that Tulum itself cannot, weighted by review strength and how easy the logistics are from town. The order is a starting point: a family with young kids and a pair of divers will read it very differently. From what we've seen in reviews and operator details, the days that go wrong rarely come down to the guide; they come down to rough sea, a missed pickup change or a longer transfer than expected.

1
Best first-time day trip$214 · 10 hrs · fees included

Chichén Itzá, Cenote & Valladolid (Mexico Kan Tours)

The headline day trip, done as a small group that starts in Tulum rather than on a Cancún coach route. Every entrance fee is in the price. Recent guests say the van reaches the ruins ahead of the coach crowds and the Xux Ha cenote is often close to empty, but plan on a long day: one guest timed it at 12 hours door to door from Tulum.

2
Best combination of activities$184 · 8 hrs · 5.0 rating

Cobá, Punta Laguna & Mayan Family (Mexico Kan Tours)

Jungle ruins explored by bike, then spider monkeys, a canoe and zipline at Punta Laguna, a cenote and a home-cooked lunch with a Maya family. The highest-rated tour on this page. It is hot and active, though you can ride a pedicab around Cobá instead of cycling, and guests often have the cenote to themselves.

3
Best wildlife$254 · 10 hrs · ages 6+

Sian Ka'an to Punta Allen (Mexico Kan Tours)

A long drive down the reserve's dirt road, then boats through lagoons and out to the reef. Recent reviews list manatees, dolphins, crocodiles and turtles; the snorkel stop depends on the sea and is sometimes called off. On choppy days the back seats of the small boats take the spray, so bag up cameras.

4
Best half-day$219 · 6 hrs · 12:30pm start

Muyil & Sian Ka'an Canals (Mexico Kan Tours)

The closest way into Sian Ka'an: the Muyil ruins, a boat across two lagoons, then a float down an ancient Maya canal wearing your life jacket upside down as a seat. A relaxed afternoon rather than an adventure, and the float itself lasts roughly 30 to 40 minutes. Several recent guests describe a version that started at the Tulum ruins instead, so confirm which site your date visits.

5
Best for turtles$119 · 4.5 hrs · ages 6+

Hidden Cenote Swim & Akumal Turtles (Cancun Adventures)

A cave cenote swim, a guided snorkel with green turtles in Akumal Bay, and lunch at a beach club. Phones are not allowed in the cenote and sunscreen is not allowed in the bay, two rules guests wish they had known sooner.

Check availability
6
Best cenote morning$129.88 · 4 hrs · from downtown

Cenote Triple Adventure (Adventure Tour Center at Mateo's)

Three very different cenotes in one morning: a mangrove snorkel, a cave cenote with bats, and a jumping cenote with rope swings. Meet at the office in town. Lunch is not included, and one guest says the morning ran nearer five hours. Several recent guests had the guide to themselves after other bookings cancelled.

7
Best ruins you can climb$159 + $35 gate fee · Thu & Sun

Ek Balam, Cenote & Valladolid (Cancun Adventures)

Ek Balam's Acropolis can still be climbed, and the site sees far fewer visitors than Chichén Itzá. It is a long day from Tulum, and pickups from the Riviera Maya run only on Thursdays and Sundays. Guests rate the ruins and cenote highly but often say the Valladolid stop could be skipped.

8
Best summer experience$199 · 6 to 10 hrs · summer only

Whale Shark Tour (Ocean Tours Mexico)

Swimming beside the world's largest fish off Isla Mujeres. From Tulum it means a 4:00 to 5:00am pickup and a long drive to the Cancún-area marina, so it is a full commitment of a day. Each pair gets about two short jumps, often with other boats around the same shark, and seasickness is the most common complaint.

Check availability
9
Best adventure$80 · 4 hrs · ages 5+

Selva Maya Eco Adventure Park

Ziplines, hanging bridges, a climbing wall, a rappel and two cenotes, one of them underground, then tacos. There is no hotel pickup, so it suits travelers with a car or a taxi budget. Recent groups are often near-private, and the optional ATV adds about 25 to 30 minutes of jungle track each way.

Check availability

If you only have one free day, we would choose Chichén Itzá on a first visit and Cobá if you have already seen it.

Drive Times from Tulum and Where to Read More

Distance shapes these Tulum excursions more than anything else. Here is how far each one is, and which of our detailed guides covers it in full.

  • Akumal (about 25 km north, 25 to 30 minutes): the region's reliable turtle bay, and the shortest transfer on this list. Our Akumal snorkeling tour guide compares turtle-only snorkels with ruins combos.
  • Muyil and the Sian Ka'an canals (about 20 km south, 25 minutes): the easy entrance to the biosphere reserve. We'd book it over Punta Allen if you want the lagoons without the long dirt-road drive or a snorkel stop that depends on the sea.
  • Punta Allen (2 to 3 hours south): the far end of the Sian Ka'an peninsula, reached on a slow dirt road. Our Sian Ka'an tour guide compares 12 tours across both the Muyil and Punta Allen sides.
  • Cenotes near town: Gran Cenote and Casa Cenote are close to Tulum, which is why a three-cenote morning fits before lunch. Our Tulum cenote tour guide ranks nine options, including private and cave trips.
  • Cobá (about 45 km northwest, 45 minutes): the closest major Maya city. Our Cobá ruins guide covers the Nohoch Mul climb, bikes and colectivos.
  • Chichén Itzá (about 150 km, 2 to 2.5 hours): the longest ruins day, usually paired with Valladolid. Most people don't realize the site can close at short notice: two guests reviewing in May 2026 were switched to Ek Balam on the day, and both rated the swap highly. See our Chichén Itzá tours from Tulum comparison and our best time to visit Chichén Itzá guide.
  • Ek Balam: north of Valladolid, and the operator warns the transfer from Riviera Maya hotels can take up to 2.5 hours each way.
  • Whale-shark marina (2 to 2.5 hours north): boats leave from the Cancún area, so Tulum pickups start before dawn. Our whale shark tours from Tulum guide covers the season and the tours that pick up in Tulum.
  • Selva Maya (km 240, Highway 307): a self-drive jungle park. For ziplines with hotel pickup and ATVs instead, see our Tulum zipline guide and Tulum ATV tours.

Best Day Trips from Tulum by Traveler Type

The best day trips from Tulum for you depend less on ratings, since every tour here is rated 4.8 or above, and more on age limits, early starts and how much time you want to spend in a van.

  • First-time visitors: Chichén Itzá. We'd give the small-group version from Tulum the edge because it avoids the big-coach pickup rounds that make Cancún versions so long, and recent groups of four to ten reach the ruins before the coaches arrive. We'd look elsewhere if anyone in your group has limited mobility: one recent guest describes about half a mile of rocky ground at Chichén Itzá and roughly 50 steep steps down to the cenote.
  • Families with young kids: the Chichén Itzá, Cobá and Muyil tours list an infant band from age 0, while Selva Maya starts at 5 and the Akumal, cenote and Punta Allen trips at 6. The Akumal tour also sets a minimum height of 1.20 m. Our Tulum with kids guide goes further.
  • Wildlife lovers: Punta Allen for manatees and dolphins, Akumal for turtles, and whale sharks if you are here in summer. This is where expectations differ most: the whale-shark swim is a couple of short, fast jumps with other boats nearby, not a long snorkel, while Akumal's turtles are a slower, calmer swim.
  • Active travelers: Cobá by bike plus Punta Laguna, or Selva Maya's ziplines, climbing wall and rappel.
  • Budget-minded: Selva Maya at $80 is the lowest price here, but you pay separately to get there. Among trips with pickup, the Akumal tour at $119 is the lowest.
  • Couples who want something slow: the Muyil canal float, which starts at 12:30pm and leaves the morning free for the beach.

When to Do Each Day Trip

Most of these trips run every day of the year, so timing is about heat, rain and one seasonal animal rather than availability.

Dry seasonWinter and spring

Best for ruins

Chichén Itzá, Cobá and Ek Balam are exposed sites, and cooler, drier months make the walking far easier. Early departures matter at any time of year: the Chichén Itzá small group leaves Tulum at 7:00am.

Whale sharksMid-May to mid-September

Summer only

The only seasonal trip here. Ocean Tours Mexico's 2027 departures run June 1 to September 17. Book it early in your stay so a rough-sea cancellation can be rescheduled.

Hurricane seasonJune to November

Keep inland options open

Boat trips to Punta Allen and the whale-shark grounds are the most weather-dependent. Cenotes, Cobá and Chichén Itzá are inland, so they are also unaffected by sargassum on the beaches.

For month-by-month detail, see our best time to visit Tulum guide and our Tulum sargassum guide, both linked in the tips below.

How Much Do Day Trips from Tulum Cost?

Day trips from Tulum cost from $80 to $254 USD per person for the top-rated tour on each route. Half-day cenote, turtle and adventure-park trips sit at the low end, while full days to Chichén Itzá and Sian Ka'an cost the most. Check admission: some prices include every fee, while others add a fee on the day, such as $35 USD at Ek Balam.

Budget$80 to $129.88

Selva Maya ($80, no transport), the Akumal turtle and cenote tour ($119) and the three-cenote morning ($129.88, lunch is a $15 add-on). Half days, so you keep an afternoon free.

Mid-range$159 to $199

Ek Balam ($159 plus a $35 gate fee), Cobá with Punta Laguna ($184, lunch included) and whale sharks ($199 plus government fees and optional wetsuit rental).

Premium$214 to $254

The Chichén Itzá small group ($214 with all entrance fees), Muyil and Sian Ka'an ($219) and the full day to Punta Allen ($254). You are paying for small groups and Tulum pickup rather than a seat on a Cancún coach route.

We'd lean toward Cobá at $184 for value: lunch, a guide and a bike are included on the highest-rated tour here, and it fits ruins, monkeys, a canoe and a cenote into an 8-hour day. On every trip, budget for tips and drinks.

What About Bacalar and Holbox?

Both come up constantly when people plan day trips from Tulum, and both are better as overnights. When we scanned the tours on offer, neither had more than a handful of well-reviewed day tours from Tulum, and most of the day would go on the highway. Bacalar's lagoon is a destination in its own right rather than a quick add-on.

Isla Holbox is further still, at the northern tip of the peninsula, and needs a ferry. If you want to go, our how to get to Isla Holbox guide explains the routes, and best things to do in Isla Holbox shows what a two- or three-night stay looks like.

Our Take

The pattern we keep seeing in recent reviews is that group size, not the itinerary, is what the higher Tulum prices buy: groups of four to ten reach Chichén Itzá ahead of the coach tours and often have the cenote to themselves.

Tips for Your Tulum Day Trips

  • Check where pickup is included: the Mexico Kan Tours trips include pickup inside Tulum only, with listed surcharges of $10 to $45 USD per person if you stay further up the coast. If you are based in Playa del Carmen, our day trips from Playa del Carmen guide has tours priced for there.
  • Read the admission line, not the headline price: $214 with fees included can cost less than a cheaper tour plus gate fees. The table above shows which tours include what.
  • Do not stack two long days back to back: Chichén Itzá, Punta Allen and whale sharks each take most of a day. Put a beach or cenote day between them.
  • Pack for cenote rules: several cenotes and Akumal Bay ban sunscreen and phones. Bring a rash guard, a towel and cash for lockers and tips, and expect photos to be sold by the operator. The main tradeoff is on the Akumal tour: phones stay out of the cenote, and recent guests were quoted different prices for the photo package, so ask the price before you swim.
  • Leave a change of clothes in the van: on the small-group trips the driver stays with the vehicle, so you can walk the ruins light and change before the cenote or the Muyil float. Water shoes help on the rocky path to some cenotes.
  • Prepare for the whale-shark boat: seasickness is the complaint that comes up most, so take motion-sickness tablets before you board, and bring a long-sleeved swim shirt rather than buying one on the boat.
  • Protect your gear on Sian Ka'an boats: there is little dry storage on the small boats, so bring a dry bag, plus insect repellent for the lagoons and mangroves.
  • Selva Maya needs your own transport: the park is at km 240 on Highway 307, with no hotel pickup. It is closed on Sundays, and the posted weight limit is 240 lb.
  • Check the sea before booking boat trips: plan around sargassum and summer weather with our best time to visit Tulum and Tulum sargassum guides.
  • Staying in Cancún instead? Our day trips from Cancún guide covers the same sites from the north, with longer transfers.

How We Selected These Tours

For this Tulum hub the Cancun Trip Insider team chose one tour per destination, not several versions of the same trip, and favoured tours that pick up in Tulum or start in town over Cancún-based routes. Every tour was verified as an active listing with current pricing on October 3, 2026, and each had recent reviews within the last six months. We left out Bacalar and Holbox because neither had enough well-reviewed day tours from Tulum. The nine picks cover Maya history, wildlife, cenotes, a seasonal splurge and a budget adventure park.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the best day trips from Tulum?+

Chichén Itzá with Valladolid, Cobá with Punta Laguna, and the Sian Ka'an Biosphere Reserve are the three strongest full days. For shorter trips, Akumal's sea turtles, a three-cenote morning and the Muyil canal float all fit in half a day. In summer, whale sharks are worth the early start.

How far is Chichén Itzá from Tulum?+

About 150 km, a drive of roughly 2 to 2.5 hours each way. That is shorter than from Cancún. The top-rated small-group tour leaves Tulum at 7:00am and runs about 10 hours. Our Chichén Itzá tours from Tulum guide compares the other options.

What is the closest Mayan ruin day trip from Tulum?+

Apart from the Tulum ruins in town, Muyil is closest, about 25 minutes south at the edge of Sian Ka'an. Cobá is the closest major Maya city, about 45 km and 45 minutes northwest, and the top Cobá tour from Tulum adds Punta Laguna, a cenote and lunch with a Maya family.

Which day trips from Tulum are good for kids?+

The Chichén Itzá, Cobá and Muyil tours list an infant age band, so all ages can join. Selva Maya starts at age 5, and the Akumal turtle, cenote and Punta Allen trips start at 6. The Akumal tour also requires a minimum height of 1.20 m. Whale shark tours accept children from 3.

Can you swim with whale sharks on a day trip from Tulum?+

Yes, but only in summer, and it is a long day. Tulum pickups run 4:00 to 5:00am because the boats leave from the Cancún area, 2 to 2.5 hours north. The top tour's 2027 departures run June 1 to September 17, from $199 plus government fees.

Are entrance fees included in Tulum day trips?+

It depends on the tour. The Chichén Itzá small-group tour from Tulum includes all entrance fees. The Ek Balam tour charges $35 USD at the gate, the whale shark tour excludes government fees, and the Akumal turtle tour is sold with or without the entrance and conservation fee. Compare all-in prices, not headline rates.

How much do day trips from Tulum cost?+

The top-rated tour for each trip costs between $80 and $254 USD per person. Half days to Selva Maya, Akumal and the cenotes run $80 to $129.88, and full days to Chichén Itzá, Muyil and Punta Allen run $214 to $254. Add tips, drinks and any gate fees.
