Five days in Tulum adds Sian Ka'an to the ruins and cenotes: a float through the mangroves at Muyil. Here is the plan, with free beach time every day, start times, live prices and real costs for two by month.

What You Should Know

  • Five days is four nights, with three full days. That fits the ruins at opening time, three cenotes and the Muyil and Sian Ka'an float, with free beach time every day.
  • The Muyil tour starts at 12:30 pm and takes about six hours: the jungle ruins of Muyil, a boat across two lagoons and a 30-minute float down a canal through the mangroves, $219 per person with hotel pickup in Tulum.
  • Visit the Tulum ruins yourself at the 8 am opening for 265 MXN (about $14) per foreign adult, then walk on to a free beach; the Muyil tour visits different ruins, so nothing is repeated.
  • For two people, a town hotel, the tours, the ruins and private transfers from Tulum airport came to about $1,580 to $1,920 on our November 4, 2026 checks, depending on the month, before flights and meals.

5 Days in Tulum: The Plan at a Glance

⭐ Our 5-day plan: free beach and town on day 1, the ruins at opening time on day 2, three cenotes on day 3, a free morning and the Sian Ka'an float on day 4, and a cooking class before your flight on day 5.

5 days in Tulum is the length where the trip reaches past the town. The headline addition is Sian Ka'an, the biosphere reserve south of Tulum, where you float down an ancient Maya canal through the mangroves. The rest of the plan keeps a free block in every day, because Tulum's public beaches and its walkable town are half the point.

DayPlanStart and lengthPrice per person
Day 1Fly in; free afternoon at Playa Paraíso and a free evening in Tulum PuebloAbout 30 min from Tulum airportTransfer from $70 each way for two sharing
Day 2Tulum ruins on your own at 8 am, then a free afternoon at Playa Mangle or Las PalmasAbout 2 hours at the site265 MXN (about $14)
Day 3Cenote Triple Adventure, then a free bike ride to Playa Pescadores9 am, 4 hours$130
Day 4Free morning on the beach, then Muyil and the Sian Ka'an float12:30 pm, about 6 hours$219
Day 5Cooking class in a local home, then the airport10:30 am, 3 hours$93

Prices are what we found on November 4, 2026 for two adults travelling in February and July 2027; they were the same in both months. For everything else Tulum offers, see our best things to do in Tulum guide.

5 Days in Tulum, Day by Day

Day 1: Arrive, the Beach and the Town

Tulum airport is about 30 minutes from town and Cancún airport about two hours; a private one-way transfer was $140 per vehicle on our check, and our airport transfer guide compares the options. Spend a free afternoon at Playa Paraíso, a public beach access on the beach road, and a free evening on Avenida Tulum in town.

Day 2: The Ruins at 8 am, Then a Free Beach

Go to the Tulum ruins for the 8 am opening: 265 MXN (about $14) per foreign adult since July 20, 2026, entering through Jaguar Park. The first hour is the only time the view of El Castillo above the sea is free of crowds; our ruins rules guide has the details. Then walk into Playa Mangle, free from Jaguar Park's south entrance between 8 am and 5 pm, or ride on to Las Palmas.

Day 3: Three Cenotes, Then a Bike to the Beach

The Cenote Triple Adventure, rated 5.0 from 468 reviews, leaves from a meeting point in town at 9 am and spends about four hours at Gran Cenote, Casa Cenote and Cenote Zemway, $130 per person with gear and snacks; lunch is $15 extra. Back by early afternoon, ride a bike to Playa Pescadores, another free access, for the rest of the day.

Day 4: A Free Morning, Then Muyil and Sian Ka'an

Keep the morning free on the beach. At 12:30 pm, Mexico Kan Tours' Muyil and Sian Ka'an tour, rated 4.9 from 846 reviews, collects you from your Tulum hotel for about six hours: a guided walk through the jungle ruins of Muyil, a boat across two lagoons and a float of more than 30 minutes down a canal through the mangroves, then tacos. It was $219 per person on our check; pickups north of Tulum cost more. See our Sian Ka'an tour guide.

Day 5: Cook, Eat, Fly

The cooking class in a Tulum family home starts at 10:30 am, about three hours with all the food and drinks, including beer, wine and mezcal, for $93 per person. That leaves time for an afternoon flight from Tulum airport.

Free Things to Do in 5 Days in Tulum

Every day of this plan has a free block. They cost nothing beyond a bike or a short taxi, and they are where the trip slows down.

WhenFree thingWhereWhy it fits
Day 1 afternoon and eveningPlaya Paraíso, then Tulum PuebloBeach road; the townA free public access, then dinner in town
Day 2 afternoonPlaya Mangle or Las PalmasJaguar Park south entrance; beach roadStraight on from the ruins

The beach is public, but there are only a few free entry points on the beach road and parking is tight, so ask your hotel for a bike; many lend them. The federal government says 10 public beach accesses have opened along Tulum's coast since 2025. In spring and summer, check our Tulum sargassum guide before a beach day.

Where to Stay for 5 Days in Tulum

For five days, either base works. Town is cheaper and closer to the cenote tour; the beach zone puts the free beach outside your door. In our sample the median town hotel was $97 to $182 a night for two and the median beach-zone hotel $176 to $341, depending on the month. The Sian Ka'an tour collects from hotels in Tulum either way. Our Tulum hotels guide compares them.

Book the Tours for 5 Days in Tulum

All of these could be booked for February and July 2027 dates on our November 4, 2026 check, except the whale shark tour, which runs only in season. Muyil and the Sian Ka'an float is our pick for five days because it is the experience that Tulum's shorter trips leave out, and an afternoon start keeps the morning free for the beach.

How Much Do 5 Days in Tulum Cost?

For two adults, before flights, meals, tips and the taxes and fees added at hotel checkout. The range runs from the cheapest month to the most expensive in our sample.

StyleHotel, 4 nightsTours, ruins and transfers for twoTotal for two
Budget hotel$324 to $620$1,192$1,516 to $1,812
Town hotel$388 to $728$1,192$1,580 to $1,920
Beach-zone hotel$704 to $1,364$1,192$1,896 to $2,556

The beaches, the town and the bike rides are free, so they add $0. What goes into it: private transfers from Tulum airport both ways ($280 for two, if the return costs the same as the arrival), the ruins on your own ($28), the Cenote Triple Adventure ($260), Muyil and Sian Ka'an ($438) and the cooking class ($186). Hotel figures are per-night rates for two across 22 well-rated Tulum hotels: budget is the cheapest quarter, $81 to $155 a night; town is the median of the 12 town hotels, $97 to $182; beach zone is the median of the 10 beach hotels, $176 to $341.

Our Take

Five days lets Tulum be what it is best at: slow mornings on a free beach, one good outing in the afternoon, and dinner in town. Sian Ka'an is the reason to stay the extra day; floating down a Maya canal through the mangroves is unlike anything else on the coast.

Tips for a 5-Day Trip to Tulum

  • Bring swimwear under your clothes on the Sian Ka'an day; you float straight from the boat.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen in the cenotes and the reserve.
  • Borrow a bike for the free beach accesses; parking on the beach road is tight.
  • Planning a different length? Our 3-day, 4-day and 7-day Tulum itineraries use the same approach, and our best things to do in Tulum guide covers every activity.
  • Staying in Cancún instead? Our 5 days in Cancún itinerary plans the same length from the hotel zone.

How We Built This Itinerary

We built this plan around real start times and durations. On November 4, 2026 we checked live availability and prices on Viator for two adults on February 10 and July 14, 2027 for each tour in the plan and its swaps, and read each tour's 30 most recent Viator reviews; tours whose recent reviews had slipped were left out. The ruins entrance is the July 20, 2026 fee for foreign adults, from our Tulum ruins guide. Hotel costs come from our hotel partner's rates for the same 22 Tulum hotels, rated at least 8 out of 10 from at least 300 reviews, for a four-night stay for two starting in the middle of each month from November 2026 to October 2027, pulled the same day, before the taxes and fees added at checkout. Prices change; always confirm with the operator or hotel before booking. We have not taken these tours ourselves.
