Three days in Tulum is one big day out and two half days. Here is how to spend them, with the ruins, turtles and a cenote in a single tour, Tulum's free public beaches, and what the trip costs for two month by month.

What You Should Know

  • Three days is two nights. Tulum airport is about 30 minutes from town and Cancún airport about two hours, so on a short trip the airport you fly into matters.
  • Spend the one full day on the ruins, turtles and cenote tour: $129 per person on our check, with the Tulum ruins entrance included and the national park and marine conservation fees extra, in about eight hours.
  • The beach is free. Tulum's coast is public, with free access at Playa Paraíso, Las Palmas and Playa Pescadores, and a flat ride of about two miles between town and the beach that many hotels make by lending bikes.
  • For two people, a town hotel, the tour and private transfers from Tulum airport came to about $732 to $902 on our November 4, 2026 price checks, depending on the month, before flights and meals.

3 Days in Tulum: The Plan at a Glance

⭐ Our 3-day plan: a free afternoon on the beach and an evening in town on day 1, the ruins, turtles and a cenote on day 2, and a free sunrise swim before your flight on day 3. One paid day, two free half days.

3 days in Tulum is short, but Tulum's best things are close together: the clifftop ruins, the turtles at Akumal and the cenotes are all within about 30 minutes, and the public beaches cost nothing. The trick is to put the three sights into one guided day and keep the rest of the trip free.

DayPlanStart and lengthPrice per person
Day 1Fly in and transfer; free afternoon at Playa Paraíso and a free evening in Tulum PuebloAbout 30 min from Tulum airportTransfer from $70 each way for two sharing; the rest free
Day 2Tulum ruins, Akumal turtles and a cenoteHotel pickup, about 8 hours$129 + park and marine fees
Day 3Free sunrise swim at Las Palmas or Playa Pescadores, then the airportSunrise to mid-morningFree

Prices are what we found on November 4, 2026 for two adults travelling in February and July 2027; they were the same in both months. For everything else Tulum offers, see our best things to do in Tulum guide.

3 Days in Tulum, Day by Day

Day 1: Arrive, Then the Beach and the Town

From Tulum airport it is about 30 minutes to town; from Cancún airport, about two hours. A private one-way transfer was $140 per vehicle on our check, and our Tulum airport transfer guide compares both airports. Then spend the afternoon free on the beach: the coast is public, and Playa Paraíso is one of the main free access points on the beach road. In the evening, walk Avenida Tulum in Tulum Pueblo, the town, for dinner; it costs nothing to wander.

Day 2: The Ruins, Turtles and a Cenote

Ocean Tours Mexico's Tulum ruins, Akumal turtles and cenote tour, rated 4.9 from 2,343 reviews, packs Tulum's three big sights into about eight hours with hotel pickup: a guided visit to the clifftop ruins with the entrance included, a snorkel with turtles at Akumal, a cenote swim and fresh tacos. It was $129 per person on our check, plus the Tulum National Park and marine conservation fees. Its 30 most recent Viator reviews averaged 4.9; one late-October guest who is not a strong swimmer skipped the turtle swim and still enjoyed the rest. Bring walking shoes and a change of clothes; the cenote is chilly.

Day 3: A Free Sunrise Before You Fly

The coast faces east, so the sun comes up over the sea. Ride a bike or take a short taxi to Las Palmas or Playa Pescadores, two more of the free public accesses on the beach road, for a sunrise swim before checkout. If your flight is in the afternoon and you want one more paid outing, the two-hour Tulum reef snorkel leaves at 10 am and was $49 per person; see our Tulum snorkelling guide.

Free Things to Do in 3 Days in Tulum

Two of your three days are mostly free. These cost nothing and fit around the plan above.

WhenFree thingWhereWhy it fits
Day 1 afternoonPlaya ParaísoBeach road, near the ruinsOne of the main free public accesses, popular with locals
Day 1 eveningTulum Pueblo and Avenida TulumThe townWalk, eat and people-watch; restaurants cost less than on the beach
Day 3 sunriseLas Palmas or Playa PescadoresBeach roadFree access points, and the coast faces the sunrise
Any dayRide a bike between town and the beachAbout two miles, flatMany hotels lend bikes; it replaces a taxi each way

The beach itself is public, but the beach road has only a few free entry points and parking is tight, which is why a bike works better than a car. The federal government says 10 public beach accesses have opened along Tulum's coast since 2025, and Playa Mangle is free to walk into from Jaguar Park's south entrance between 8 am and 5 pm; our Tulum ruins rules guide explains the park. In spring and summer, check our Tulum sargassum guide before a beach day.

Change the Plan by Season

If you travel in...Change
June to SeptemberDay 2 can be a whale shark tour instead: $199 per person on our July check, 6:00 am pickup, 6 to 10 hours.
Spring and summerSargassum is heaviest on Tulum's beaches from about May to August. If the beach is covered, swap the free beach time for a cenote; our Tulum cenote tour guide lists them.
December to AprilDry, clear and busy; book the day 2 tour a few days ahead.

Where to Stay for 3 Days in Tulum

On a short trip, the town is the better base: it is cheaper, it has the restaurants, and day 2's pickup is easy. In our sample the median town hotel was $97 a night for two in May and early December and $182 in January; in the beach zone the median was $176 in November and $341 in January. Our Tulum hotels guide compares both areas.

Book the Tours for 3 Days in Tulum

All of these could be booked for February and July 2027 dates on our November 4, 2026 check, except the whale shark tour, which runs only in season. The ruins, turtles and cenote tour is our pick for a short trip because it covers Tulum's three headline sights in one day with the ruins entrance included.

How Much Do 3 Days in Tulum Cost?

For two adults, before flights, meals, tips and the taxes and fees added at hotel checkout. The range runs from the cheapest month to the most expensive in our sample.

StyleHotel, 2 nightsTour and transfers for twoTotal for two
Budget hotel$162 to $310$538$700 to $848
Town hotel$194 to $364$538$732 to $902
Beach-zone hotel$352 to $682$538$890 to $1,220

The beaches, the town and the bike rides are free, so they add $0. What goes into it: private transfers from Tulum airport both ways ($280 for two, if the return costs the same $140 per vehicle we found for one way) and the ruins, turtles and cenote tour ($258 for two, plus park and marine fees). Hotel figures are per-night rates for two across 22 well-rated Tulum hotels: budget is the cheapest quarter, $81 to $155 a night; town is the median of the 12 town hotels, $97 to $182; beach zone is the median of the 10 beach hotels, $176 to $341.

Our Take

On three days, Tulum rewards doing one big thing well and then slowing down. The ruins, turtles and cenote fit into one guided day; the rest of the trip is the free part, the beach, the town and a bike between them, and that is the part people come back for.

Tips for a 3-Day Trip to Tulum

  • Fly into Tulum airport if you can; it is about 30 minutes from town against about two hours from Cancún.
  • Ask your hotel for a bike. Many lend them, and it saves a taxi between town and the beach.
  • Carry pesos for the national park and marine fees on day 2.
  • Want more time? Our 4-day, 5-day and 7-day Tulum itineraries build on this plan, and our best things to do in Tulum guide covers every activity.
  • Staying in Cancún instead? Our 3 days in Cancún itinerary plans the same length from the hotel zone.

How We Built This Itinerary

We built this plan around real start times and durations. On November 4, 2026 we checked live availability and prices on Viator for two adults on February 10 and July 14, 2027 for each tour in the plan and its swaps, and read each tour's 30 most recent Viator reviews; tours whose recent reviews had slipped, such as one hidden-cenote and turtle tour from Akumal, were left out. Hotel costs come from our hotel partner's rates for the same 22 Tulum hotels, rated at least 8 out of 10 from at least 300 reviews, for a four-night stay for two starting in the middle of each month from November 2026 to October 2027, pulled the same day, before the taxes and fees added at checkout. Beach zone means the hotels along the coast road south of the ruins. The free beach accesses and park rules come from our Tulum guides. Prices change; always confirm with the operator or hotel before booking. We have not taken these tours ourselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 3 days enough in Tulum?+

Yes, for the highlights. The ruins, the turtles at Akumal and a cenote fit into one guided day, and the public beaches and the town fill the rest for free. A longer trip adds Sian Ka'an, Cobá and more cenotes.

What should I do with 3 days in Tulum?+

Spend day 1 free on the beach at Playa Paraíso and in town, take the Tulum ruins, Akumal turtles and cenote tour on day 2, and have a free sunrise swim at Las Palmas or Playa Pescadores before your flight on day 3.

How much do 3 days in Tulum cost?+

For two people, two nights in a town hotel, private transfers from Tulum airport and the ruins, turtles and cenote tour came to about $732 to $902 on our November 4, 2026 checks, depending on the month, before flights and meals. In the beach zone it was about $890 to $1,220.

Are Tulum's beaches free?+

Yes. The beach is public, and the main free access points on the beach road are Playa Paraíso, Las Palmas and Playa Pescadores; parking is limited, so a bike or taxi is easier. Playa Mangle is free to walk into from Jaguar Park's south entrance between 8 am and 5 pm.

What is the cheapest month for 3 days in Tulum?+

In our sample, the median Tulum hotel was cheapest in November, $134 a night for two, and most expensive from January to March, $226. Town hotels were cheapest in May and early December, at $97.
