Every type of Cancún boat tour in one place: Isla Mujeres catamarans, a drive-your-own jungle speedboat, sunset cruises, private yachts, a hip hop party boat, Isla Contoy and whale sharks, each represented by its best verified tour with real prices and the fees listings leave out.
What You Should Know
- Cancún boat tours split into sheltered two-to-three-hour lagoon trips in Nichupté Lagoon and open-water days to Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy or the whale shark grounds, with a real chance of chop.
- Lagoon tours leave hourly from the Hotel Zone and fit around a beach day; Isla Mujeres days take five to eight hours, and whale shark pickups start around 6am, June to mid-September.
- Shared trips here cost $55 to $199 per person and private boats from about $353 per boat. Most add a dock or park fee of about $20 per person, often in cash.
- Time in the water is shorter than most listings suggest: recent reviews describe reef stops of 15 to 20 minutes on the jungle and sailing trips, and snorkel stops dropped in rough seas.
Cancún Boat Tours: How to Pick the Right Trip
Cancún boat tours range from a two-and-a-half-hour speedboat run through the mangroves of Nichupté Lagoon to a ten-hour day chasing whale sharks off Isla Mujeres, so the right trip depends less on the operator and more on the type of day you want. This hub compares one top-rated, recently reviewed tour for each type of boat trip, with verified prices, ages, departure points and the extra fees, then sends you to our detailed guide for each.
The best boat tours in Cancún leave from three areas: the lagoon-side marinas along Kukulcán Boulevard in the Hotel Zone, the Playa Tortugas piers at Km 6.5, and Puerto Juárez north of downtown. If you already know what you want, jump to our guides to the best sunset cruises in Cancún, Cancún yacht rentals or the top Cancún snorkeling tours. Staying further south? We have separate hubs for Playa del Carmen boat tours and Cozumel boat tours.

What to Expect on a Cancún Boat Tour
Most shared Isla Mujeres boat trips from Cancún follow the same pattern. Here is how a typical full day runs:
- 01
Check-in at the marina
Arrive 15 to 30 minutes early (or meet your transfer), check in at the dock office and pay any dock or port fee, usually in cash.
- 02
Sail across the bay
The crossing to Isla Mujeres takes roughly an hour on a catamaran, with the bar usually opening as soon as you board.
- 03
Reef snorkel stop
A guided snorkel of about 45 minutes to an hour at a reef such as El Meco, with life jackets mandatory. It can be shortened or dropped when the sea is choppy.
- 04
Beach club or Playa Norte
Lunch either onboard or at a beach club, plus swimming time off Playa Norte, a shallow beach on the island's north tip.
- 05
Free time in town
One to two hours to walk Isla Mujeres town, rent a golf cart or shop before reboarding.
- 06
Sail back to Cancún
The return leg is the party part of the day on most boats, with music and drinks. Expect to be back at the dock in the late afternoon.

Lagoon tours are much shorter: a Mayan purification ceremony and briefing at the marina, a self-drive run through the mangroves and out to the reef, a snorkel stop of about 20 minutes, then a snack back at base, all in two and a half hours. If the wind picks up, the snorkel can be cancelled while the speedboat run goes ahead. Whale shark trips start earliest, with pickups from 6am and, in recent reviews, 40 minutes to an hour and a half of open water each way.
Our take (the shared Isla Mujeres catamarans): On the shared catamarans, the complaints in recent reviews are almost always the same three: cash fees at the dock that the headline price leaves out, buffet food that rarely impresses, and long waits at the marina before boarding. The sailing, the crews and the water off Playa Norte get the praise. Book these trips for the day on the water and eat properly on the island if food matters to you.
Our take (the jungle speedboat tour): Guests consistently rate driving the boats and the patience of the captains highest, and several mention underwater statues on the snorkel stop. The low ratings are about add-ons and the reef itself: drinks, a separately priced photo and drone video package, a snack some call underwhelming, and fewer fish than people hoped for on a short snorkel. Bring your own water, decide on photos before you go, and treat it as a speedboat thrill rather than a serious snorkel trip.
Best Boat Tours in Cancún, by Type
Here is what each type of Cancún boat trip is actually like and who it suits. Each one has a full guide of its own where we compare more operators.
1. Jungle Tour: Puerto Maya Cancún (Our Pick)
You pilot your own small speedboat through the mangrove channels of Nichupté Lagoon, then snorkel the reef with a guide. At two and a half hours from a Hotel Zone base, it is the easiest boat trip to fit around a beach day. The tradeoff: there is very little actual jungle, the reef stop lasts about 20 minutes, and the day opens with a smoky Mayan purification ceremony that some guests love and others would skip. Drinks, photos and a drone video are sold separately, and recent reviewers quote roughly $70 for photos and $99 for the drone clip. We wouldn't choose it if snorkeling is your main goal, since the reef stop is the shortest part of the day. For more reef options, see our Cancún snorkeling tours guide.
2. Isla Mujeres Luxury Sailing: Cancun Adventures
The most-reviewed boat trip on this page and the cheapest full Isla Mujeres day at $55. You choose between an adults-only boat and a family-friendly boat, and lunch and the open bar are served onboard. Budget for the $20 hotel transport and the $20 dock fee, which together take the real cost well above the headline price. Recent reviewers also describe a short snorkel of around 15 minutes, limited shade on deck and no towels or water provided, so bring your own.
3. Isla Mujeres All-Inclusive Catamaran: Caribean Golden Tours
The classic eight-hour party-and-beach catamaran: El Meco reef snorkel, a stop off Playa Norte, a beach club buffet with unlimited drinks, and free time in town. It is the longest shared day here, and the clearest split in its reviews is between guests who love the crew and guests who found the food and the wait at the marina disappointing. Recent reviews also call the included drinks weak, and beach chairs, umbrellas and restrooms at the stops can cost extra. We'd only choose it if the boat and the beach matter more than lunch; recent guests suggest eating on the island instead. Our things to do in Isla Mujeres guide helps you plan the free time.
4. Private Catamaran: Cancun Sailing Catamarans
A 32 ft catamaran for up to 13 people, four or seven hours, open bar included. At $899 for four hours, a group of 12 pays about $75 each, close to the shared all-inclusive price, for a boat of your own. We'd give it the edge for groups of ten or more, since you also set the stops and the music. Recent guests like that the crew plays your own playlist and lets you shape the stops, with one describing 30 to 40 minutes of snorkeling before anchoring off the Isla Mujeres beaches. Some older reviews say the boat felt small for a full group in high seas, and weather cancellations come up more than once.
5. Sunset Cruise: Contoy Adventures
A late-afternoon crossing to Isla Mujeres with a downtown walk and a swim at Playa Norte as the sun goes down, back in about four hours. Recent reviews describe a lively boat with a live saxophone player, music requests and a photographer rather than a quiet romantic sail. Everyone gets off for one and a half to two hours on the island, so you cannot stay aboard, and on some dates the sun sets while guests are reboarding or after dark in town. Our Cancún sunset cruise guide compares quieter dinner sails too.
6. Private Yacht Charter: Cancun Charter
A crewed 55 ft yacht out of Marina Puesta del Sol, bookable from one to eight hours, with snorkel gear, a paddle board and a floating mat. It holds a perfect 5.0 from 838 reviews. It is the most flexible option here for birthdays and groups, but food and alcohol are not included, so check what you can bring. A couple of recent reviews say the snorkel stop or paddle board did not happen on their charter, so confirm the itinerary with the crew when you board. See our full Cancún yacht rentals guide for larger and cheaper boats.
7. Hip Hop Boat Party: Rockstarcrawls
Three hours of guest DJs, an open bar, a swim stop and champagne showers, strictly 18 and over, leaving from the Playa Tortugas pier. Bookings are non-refundable, and the lower-rated reviews say the included punch is weak, with bottle service sold separately. One recent guest flags a $10 entry fee at the pier, and several say rain-outs were not refunded. Read our Cancún hip hop boat party guide before you book.
8. Isla Contoy: Ocean Tours Mexico
The nature option: a reef snorkel, about three hours on Isla Contoy (a CONANP-managed national park capped at 200 visitors a day), then an hour on Isla Mujeres. Sunscreen and insect repellent are not allowed on the island. Recent reviewers praise the grilled lunch on Contoy, but snorkel stops are dropped when the sea is rough, and some days run the route in reverse, with Isla Mujeres first. One guest notes the $20 marine park fee was cash only with no ATM at the meeting point. We like this option for wildlife lovers who can handle a long day: one recent reviewer counted 13 to 14 hours door to door once hotel pickups were included. Our Isla Contoy tour guide covers the fees and the bird life.
9. Whale Shark Trip: Ocean Tours Mexico
A seasonal boat trip from Puerto Juárez to the whale shark feeding grounds off Isla Mujeres, with hotel pickup from 6am. The swim is not guaranteed and several boats often share one animal, but the encounter still drives most of the five-star reviews. Recent guests describe two or three timed jumps per person, called by number, and motion-sickness tablets and ginger tea offered at the marina before you leave. Everything else you need is in our Cancún whale shark tour guide.
Where Cancún Boat Tours Leave From
Cancún boat trips leave from three areas, and where your boat leaves from decides how long you spend getting there and how rough the ride is.
Hotel Zone Lagoon Marinas
Kukulcán Boulevard's lagoon side is where the jungle tours and most private yachts start. Puerto Maya's base sits at Km 16.2, Cancun Charter leaves from Marina Puesta del Sol, and jet ski rentals run from marinas such as Marina Sunset Lagoon. Jungle tours stay in the sheltered Nichupté Lagoon before heading to the reef, so this is the calmest water in Cancún.
Playa Tortugas (Km 6.5)
Playa Tortugas is the busiest pier for shared Isla Mujeres catamarans and the party boats: Caribean Golden Tours checks in at Marina Adventure Bay and the hip hop party leaves from the Caribbean Carnival Pier. It is a short taxi ride from most Hotel Zone resorts, which is why many of these trips charge extra for transport rather than including it.
Puerto Juárez and Punta Sam
Puerto Juárez, north of downtown, is the closest launch point to the whale shark grounds and Isla Contoy, and Ocean Tours Mexico runs its whale shark trips from a private pier here. Expect an early pickup: Cancún collections on the whale shark trip run from 6 to 7am. For snorkeling around the island itself, see our Isla Mujeres snorkeling guide.
How to Choose a Boat Trip in Cancún
From what we've seen in reviews and operator details, the first decision is shared or private, and it shapes the day more than the operator does. Shared boats are cheaper for one to four people and come with a crew that runs the whole day. Private boats cost a flat rate per boat, so they pay off for larger groups and give you control over stops and timing. Here is how the types line up by budget, group and vibe.
Shared Isla Mujeres day
Cancun Adventures' sailing and Caribean Golden Tours' catamaran are the cheapest full days on the water. Add dock fees and transport before comparing them.
Jungle speedboat tour
Hourly departures from the Hotel Zone and back before lunch. The best way to fit a boat trip into a beach day.
Sunset cruise or adults-only sailing
The sunset cruise ends at Playa Norte at golden hour; the adults-only sailing boat removes the family crowd. We'd lean toward a private catamaran for a quiet evening, since the shared sunset boat runs as a party with live music.
Jungle tour or family sailing
The jungle tour takes kids from 6 and the family sailing boat from 4. On the Golden catamaran, snorkeling is limited to ages 10 to 60.
Private yacht or catamaran
Up to 15 on the yacht and 13 on the catamaran, with your own itinerary. Split the flat rate before comparing it with shared prices.
Isla Contoy or whale sharks
Contoy runs year-round, six days a week; whale sharks only in summer. Both are long, early days from the north end of Cancún.
Boat Tour vs Catamaran vs Yacht in Cancún
Choosing between a Cancún boat tour, a catamaran and a yacht is really a choice about who sets the day. A shared boat tour sells one experience on a fixed schedule: the jungle speedboat, the sunset cruise, the party boat, Isla Contoy or the whale sharks. A catamaran is the classic Isla Mujeres beach day, either shared with other guests or chartered for your group. A yacht is always private, priced per boat, and goes where you ask within the charter time.
| Shared boat tour | Catamaran or sailboat | Private yacht | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Price in this guide | $62.10 to $199 per person | $55 to $77 per person shared; $899 to $1,499 per boat private | From about $353 per boat for one hour |
| Group | Shared with other guests | Shared, or private for up to 13 | Private, up to 15 on the 55 ft yacht |
| Who sets the plan | The operator, on a fixed route | The crew on shared boats; you on a charter | You, within the charter time |
| Best for | One specific experience: speedboat, sunset, wildlife | A full Isla Mujeres beach and snorkel day | Groups of eight or more and celebrations |
For one to four people, a shared tour or shared catamaran almost always costs less. Once you split a flat charter rate across eight or more, a private catamaran or yacht starts to compare well, with the bonus of your own stops and timing.
Weather, Wind and Seasickness on Cancún Boat Trips
Boat tours run year-round in Cancún, but the water is not the same every day. The open crossing to Isla Mujeres is exposed to the wind, and on windy days the Harbor Master (Capitanía de Puerto) can close the port to small boats. Recent reviews of the sunset cruise and the private catamaran include trips cancelled on the day for wind or currents, and Isla Contoy reviews mention snorkel stops dropped because the sea was too rough.
- Calmest option: lagoon trips in Nichupté Lagoon are the safest choice if anyone in your group is prone to seasickness.
- Roughest rides: the whale shark run is a fast trip of 40 minutes or more in a small boat on open water. Several recent reviewers were seasick, and one recommends starting motion-sickness tablets the day before.
- Whale shark season: the season broadly runs mid-May to mid-September; the Ocean Tours listing operates June to mid-September. See our best time to visit Cancún guide for the full calendar.
- Sargassum: seaweed affects beaches more than boat trips, but it can change where you stop to swim. Our Cancún sargassum season guide tracks it month by month.
How Much Do Boat Tours in Cancún Cost?
Shared boat tours in Cancún cost $55 to $199 per person in this guide, depending on length and what is included. Lagoon and Isla Mujeres trips sit at the low end; Isla Contoy and whale shark days cost the most. If you are looking for cheap Cancún boat tours, the shared Isla Mujeres sailing and the lagoon speedboat tour start at $55 and $62.10 per person, before dock fees or transport. Private charters are priced per boat: from about $353 for an hour on a yacht to $1,499 for seven hours on a private catamaran. Most people don't realize the photo and video packages are the biggest optional extra: recent reviewers quote $50 to $100 depending on the boat.
Isla Mujeres sailing and catamarans, jungle tour
Cancun Adventures' sailing at $55, the Puerto Maya jungle tour at $62.10 and Caribean Golden Tours' all-inclusive catamaran at about $77. Dock fees and transport are usually extra.
Sunset cruise and party boat
The Contoy Adventures sunset cruise at $69 includes hotel pickup; the Rockstarcrawls hip hop party at $105 includes an open bar but not transport.
Isla Contoy and whale sharks
Full days with hotel pickup, lunch and a guide. Government or park fees are charged on top, and the whale shark trip rents wetsuits separately.
Yachts and private catamarans
Cancun Charter's 55 ft yacht from about $353 for one hour; Cancun Sailing Catamarans from $899 for four hours. Divide by your group size to compare.
We think the sweet spot for most couples is a shared Isla Mujeres day or the jungle tour at $55 to $77 per person, but add about $20 a head in dock fees, plus $20 for transport on the sailing trip, before comparing. Groups of eight or more should price a private boat first.
Our Take
The pattern we keep seeing across all nine boats is that complaints are rarely about the water and almost always about the extras: dock fees, transport, photo packages and drinks sold on top. Price those in before comparing headline fares, because the cheapest listing is often not the cheapest day.
Tips for Your Cancún Boat Tour
- Carry pesos or small US bills: dock, port and marine park fees are often collected in cash at check-in, and Cancun Charter's listing says its dock fee must be paid in cash at the marina.
- Read the start time carefully: on trips with pickup, the listed time is when the boat leaves, not when you are collected. Several recent reviews describe missed or confusing pickups, so confirm your pickup time the day before. This is where tours really differ: shared shuttles collect from several hotels, and recent reviewers on the sailing and sunset trips counted an hour or more on the road.
- Bring a rash guard and reef-safe habits: Isla Contoy bans sunscreen and repellent on the island, and operators ask you to apply sunscreen only at your hotel. A long-sleeve swim shirt does the job instead.
- Pack light: towel, swimsuit, hat, sunglasses, a waterproof phone pouch and a change of clothes. Lockers and towels are extra at the jungle tour base.
- Watch out for island sales pitches: on Isla Mujeres stops, recent reviews across several tours describe pushy shop and cigar sellers near the dock. Golf carts run about $40 an hour, so share one with other guests if you want to see the south end.
- Read the weather policy: cancellation rules vary a lot between boats. Recent party boat reviewers say a rainy day did not get them a refund or a new date, while a private catamaran guest whose trip was cancelled was refunded promptly. Check the terms before you book.
- Want the cheapest crossing? Public passenger ferries also run to Isla Mujeres from Puerto Juárez and Playa Tortugas if you only want the island, not the boat day.
- Jet skis are a separate rental: Cancun Jetski Rental rents jet skis from Marina Sunset Lagoon at $95 per jet ski for two riders (4.9 from 441 reviews), from 30 minutes to four hours.
- Choosing between bases? Our Cancún vs Playa del Carmen snorkeling comparison and best things to do in Cancún guide help you plan the rest of the trip.
How We Selected These Tours
The Cancun Trip Insider team built this hub around boat trip types, not operators: for each type we picked the single tour with the strongest mix of rating, review volume and recent reviews, preferring tours we already recommend in our detailed guides. Every tour has an active listing checked on October 3, 2026, and reviews from the last six months. We left out tours with stale reviews and ones that hide fees. The result covers lagoon trips, Isla Mujeres days, private charters, nightlife and wildlife.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best boat tour in Cancún?+
For most visitors, the Puerto Maya Cancún jungle tour is the best boat tour in Cancún: 4.9 from 3,341 reviews, $62.10 per person, two and a half hours, and you drive your own speedboat before snorkeling the reef. For a full day out, the Cancun Adventures Isla Mujeres sailing at $55 is the most-reviewed alternative.
How much is a boat tour in Cancún?+
Shared Cancún boat tours cost $55 to $199 per person, with Isla Mujeres catamarans and the jungle tour at the low end and Isla Contoy and whale shark trips at the top. Private yachts start around $353 per boat for an hour. Most trips add a dock or park fee, about $20 per person in recent reviews.
Where do boat tours leave from in Cancún?+
From three areas: the lagoon-side marinas along Kukulcán Boulevard in the Hotel Zone (jungle tours, yachts and jet skis), the Playa Tortugas piers at Km 6.5 (Isla Mujeres catamarans and party boats), and Puerto Juárez north of downtown (whale shark and Isla Contoy trips). Many tours include hotel pickup; others charge for it.
Can you take a boat tour from Cancún to Isla Mujeres?+
Yes. Isla Mujeres is the most common boat trip from Cancún, by shared catamaran, sailing boat, sunset cruise or private charter. Tours add a reef snorkel, Playa Norte and drinks. If you only want to see the island, public ferries also cross from Puerto Juárez and Playa Tortugas.
Are Cancún boat tours good for kids?+
Many are. The Contoy Adventures sunset cruise and the Ocean Tours Isla Contoy trip take all ages, the family sailing boat takes children from 4, and the jungle tour from 6. Snorkeling usually has its own limits, such as ages 10 to 60 on the Caribean Golden catamaran. The hip hop party boat is 18 and over.
Will I get seasick on a boat tour in Cancún?+
It depends on the trip. Lagoon tours in Nichupté Lagoon are sheltered and rarely rough. The open-water runs to Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy and the whale shark grounds can be choppy on windy days, and recent whale shark reviewers mention seasickness. Take motion-sickness tablets ahead of time and pick a bigger catamaran over a small boat.
Are there adults-only boat tours in Cancún?+
Yes. Cancun Adventures runs an adults-only boat on its Isla Mujeres luxury sailing, and the Rockstarcrawls hip hop boat party is strictly 18 and over. A private yacht or catamaran is the other way to keep the boat to your own group.
When is whale shark season in Cancún?+
Whale shark season runs roughly mid-May to mid-September, with July and August the most reliable months. The Ocean Tours Mexico trip we feature operates June to mid-September. Outside those months, Isla Contoy or a reef snorkel trip is the wildlife alternative.
