Playa Tortugas is the lively, calm-water public beach at km 6.5 of the Cancún Hotel Zone, with the Ultramar ferry to Isla Mujeres, the catamaran piers and the hip hop boat party. Here is the ferry timetable and fare, a map, and the five best hotels nearby, priced live.
What You Should Know
- Playa Tortugas is a free public beach at km 6 to 6.5 of Boulevard Kukulcán, on the north shore of the Hotel Zone. It faces the sheltered Bahía de Mujeres, so the water is calm and shallow near the shore rather than the open-Caribbean surf of the south Hotel Zone.
- The Ultramar ferry to Isla Mujeres leaves from a terminal on this beach seven times a day, from 9:15 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., for 290 MXN one way per adult plus a 36.56 MXN environmental fee (checked on Ultramar's own timetable on October 5, 2026). The last boat back from the island leaves at 7:00 p.m.
- This is the busiest beach on the bay side. Catamarans to Isla Mujeres, the adults-only hip hop boat party, jet skis and parasailing all operate from here, so expect boat traffic, music and touts rather than a quiet lounging beach.
- Restrooms, beach bars and seafood restaurants sit right on the sand. If you want the same calm water with fewer boats, Playa Langosta is an 18-minute walk west.
Playa Tortugas Cancún: The Short Answer
Playa Tortugas is the calm-water public beach at km 6.5 of the Cancún Hotel Zone, on the bay side between Playa Langosta and Punta Cancún, and the most action-packed beach on that stretch. It is one of two Hotel Zone beaches, with Playa Caracol, where the Ultramar ferry to Isla Mujeres leaves from the sand, and it is also where most Isla Mujeres catamarans and the hip hop boat party check in. If you want to swim in flat water, grab a beer and ceviche on the sand, and be on a boat to the island an hour later, this is the beach for it.
This guide covers the Playa Tortugas ferry (timetable, fare and crossing, checked on Ultramar's own site), a map of the beach, the piers and the nearby beaches, what the sand, water and bars are actually like, how exposed it is to sargassum, and how far it is from the airport, downtown and the rest of the Hotel Zone. It finishes with the five best hotels within 1.5 km, ranked by verified guest reviews and priced live, and the nine most popular tours that leave from the Playa Tortugas piers.
Playa Tortugas is one of several free beaches along Boulevard Kukulcán. Our guide to the best beaches in Cancún compares them all, and our best hotels in the Cancún Hotel Zone guide explains why the north arm of the Hotel Zone is the calm side of the island.

Our Take
The 7:00 p.m. boat is the last one back to Playa Tortugas. If you want sunset or dinner on Isla Mujeres, buy your return to Puerto Juárez instead, which runs far later, and take a taxi back to the Hotel Zone.
Playa Tortugas Ferry to Isla Mujeres: Timetable and Fares
The Cancún Playa Tortugas ferry is run by Ultramar from its terminal at km 6.5 of Boulevard Kukulcán, with boats to the APIQROO maritime terminal on Avenida Rueda Medina in Isla Mujeres town. We checked the timetable and fares on Ultramar's own site on October 5, 2026, for dates from mid-October through November 2026; the timetable was the same on every date we checked.

Fares
- Adult: 290 MXN one way, 580 MXN round trip.
- Child (1 year old up to 1.20 m tall): 220 MXN one way, 440 MXN round trip.
- Infant (under 1 year): free, but still needs a boarding pass.
- Environmental sanitation fee: 36.56 MXN, required by the municipal authority on top of the fare.
Ultramar charges the same 290 MXN adult fare from Playa Tortugas, Playa Caracol and Puerto Juárez. Tickets are non-refundable but valid for six months on any departure of the route you bought, and each ticket includes one piece of luggage up to 25 kg. Ultramar asks passengers to reach the terminal 30 minutes before departure.
Crossing time and arrival
Ultramar does not publish a crossing time for this route; ferry booking sites list the Hotel Zone crossings at about 30 minutes. You land at the ferry dock in Isla Mujeres town, and from there Playa Norte is a flat walk of about 0.9 km, roughly 11 minutes, through the town centre. Our things to do in Isla Mujeres guide covers the rest of the island.
Playa Tortugas, Playa Caracol or Puerto Juárez?
Playa Tortugas is the convenient choice if you are staying between km 3 and km 8: no taxi downtown, and the bus stops by the terminal. Ultramar's other Hotel Zone terminal, at Playa Caracol (km 9.5), also runs seven boats a day, from 9:00 a.m., and is about 4 km and 8 minutes east by car. The trade-off at both is frequency. Ultramar's Puerto Juárez terminal, about 10.4 km and 20 minutes by car from Playa Tortugas, runs boats roughly every 30 minutes from 5:30 a.m. and much later into the evening. If you want an early start or dinner on the island, Puerto Juárez gives you more options; if you are happy to go mid-morning and back by 7:00 p.m., Playa Tortugas saves the trip across town.
The Playa Tortugas Cancún map below plots the beach, the parking between the boulevard and the sand, the Hotel Zone bus stop, the Ultramar ferry terminal and the tour-boat piers beside it. The line shows the 1.5 km, 18-minute walk west along the boulevard to Playa Langosta, the quieter bay beach next door. Pin 6 is Casa Tortugas, a small boutique hotel across the road (see the FAQ below), and pin 8 is Ultramar's Playa Caracol terminal. Pins 9 to 13 are the hotels ranked further down this page, numbered by our ranking.
What Playa Tortugas Is Like: Water, Bars and Facilities
Playa Tortugas is a short stretch of white sand on the north arm of the Hotel Zone. The Hotel Zone is shaped like a 7, and everything west of Punta Cancún, from Playa Las Perlas through Langosta and Tortugas to Caracol, faces the Bahía de Mujeres, the sheltered bay between Cancún and Isla Mujeres. That is why the water here is so much calmer than at the long south-strip beaches such as Playa Delfines.
The water and the drop-off
Local beach guides describe the water as calm and shallow near the shore, with a sandy bottom and low waves, which suits children and weaker swimmers in the first stretch from the sand. It does not stay that way: guests describe the water getting deeper and cooler as you wade out toward the piers and the boat channel, and one local guide notes that the swell tends to pick up in the afternoon. Keep children close to the shore, swim inside any roped-off area, stay well clear of the piers and the boat lanes, and respect the flags. It is a swimming beach rather than a snorkeling one; for reef and fish, take one of the boat trips below or see our top Cancún snorkeling tours guide.
Bars, food and things to do
Tortugas is the bay side's activity beach. Beach bars and seafood restaurants line the sand, including Bonanza Seafood and Beach Club, and operators rent jet skis, run parasailing and banana boats, and sell catamaran trips from booths by the piers. There is also a bungee platform over the water. The well-known Fat Tuesday frozen-drink bar on this beach has closed, and local press reports a commercial plaza planned for its site.
Facilities
- Access: free and public. Mexican beaches are federal property, so the sand is open to anyone, not only hotel guests.
- Restrooms and showers: public restrooms sit at the back of the beach, and beach guides list freshwater showers.
- Loungers and umbrellas: for rent on the sand, or included with a drink or meal at some of the beach bars.
- Lifeguards: beach guides report a lifeguard on duty, but presence varies, so do not count on one.
- Parking: Ultramar says parking is available at its terminal, and there is surface parking between the boulevard and the beach, but it fills in high season.
Crowds
With a ferry terminal, a party-boat pier and a dozen tour operators, Playa Tortugas is busy and loud by bay-side standards, and the sand fills up around the morning ferry and tour check-ins. Early morning, before the first boat at 9:15 a.m., is the quietest time to swim.
Most Popular Tours
Sargassum at Playa Tortugas
Playa Tortugas has some of the lowest sargassum exposure in Cancún. The seaweed drifts in from the open Caribbean on the prevailing currents and winds and lands hardest on the east-facing beaches of the south Hotel Zone. Tortugas faces north into the Bahía de Mujeres, with Punta Cancún between it and the open sea, so it sits in the lee. Our Cancún sargassum season guide and our best beaches in Cancún comparison both put the bay beaches (Las Perlas, Langosta, Tortugas and Caracol) in the low-exposure group.
Low exposure is not zero. In a heavy year some seaweed can still drift into the bay. The season usually starts in April, builds through May and peaks from June to August, easing through September and October; November to March is usually clean.
How to check today's conditions
We do not report day-to-day conditions on this page. For the current picture, use the sargassum traffic light (semáforo de sargazo) published by the Quintana Roo government's environment department, SEMA Quintana Roo, which rates stretches of coast from green (scarce) through yellow and orange to red (very high), and the daily maps shared by the Red de Monitoreo del Sargazo de Quintana Roo on its social channels. If the mainland is having a bad week, Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres, one ferry ride away, is among the most reliably clear beaches in the area.
How to Get to Playa Tortugas and Distances
Playa Tortugas is on Boulevard Kukulcán, the single road through the Hotel Zone, at km 6.5. Ultramar's directions are simple: drive to km 6.5, where parking is available, or take an AUTOCAR Hotel Zone bus to Playa Tortugas. The R-1 city buses run the length of the boulevard between downtown and the Hotel Zone and stop by the beach.

Few hotels sit directly on Playa Tortugas: the streets behind it are mostly apartments and vacation rentals, which we leave out. Within 1,000 m of the shoreline, only Riu Palace Peninsula cleared our review and availability floors, so we widened the search to 1.5 km, where seven hotels passed; the five below are the top of that list, numbered as on the map. Holiday Inn Club Vacations The Royal Cancun is #1 by our weighted score at 9.0 across 1,441 reviews. If you want the lowest nightly rate, Sina Suites starts at $69 room only. If you want to walk to the sand, Riu Palace Peninsula is about 250 m away; the other four are a short taxi or bus ride. Holiday Inn Club Vacations The Royal Cancun All Inclusive
Rated 9.0/10 across 1,441 guest reviews, The Royal is #1 by our weighted score. It is an all-suites resort on the calm bay at km 4.5, about 1.5 km west of Playa Tortugas beyond Playa Langosta, and its suites have full kitchens and terraces. Guests score it 9.7 for service and 9.5 for cleanliness and rooms, and describe a calm beach that works well for children. It was cheapest all-inclusive on every date we checked, from $231 to $427 a night for two. The complaints: little evening entertainment, extra charges for premium items, and a clumsy sign-for-everything billing system. Our reservation system lists the resort twice; we took the score and review count from the listing with the most reviews and combined the rates of both, as explained in our method below. Choose it if you want space and calm water for a family.
Sina Suites Cancun (Adults Only)
Rated 8.9/10 across 2,480 reviews, Sina Suites is the lowest starting rate here, room only from $69 to $95 a night for two. It is an adults-only, three-star suites hotel on the lagoon side by the golf club, about 1.3 km from Playa Tortugas, so you will cross the boulevard and take a bus or taxi to the beach. Service scores 9.8. Guests mention room maintenance issues and a limited breakfast, and location is its weakest score at 8.4. Choose it if you want a cheap, adults-only base and do not need to be on the sand.
Presidente InterContinental Cancun Resort
Rated 8.8/10 across 3,447 reviews, the most of any hotel here, the Presidente sits at km 7.5, about 1.5 km east of Playa Tortugas on its own calm beach, room only from $177 to $293. Guests praise the cleanliness, service and location. Food and drink prices draw the most criticism, along with breakfast variety.
Riu Palace Peninsula
Rated 8.8/10 across 2,164 reviews, Riu Palace Peninsula is the only one of the five within walking distance of the beach, on the bay at km 5.5, about 250 m from Playa Tortugas. It is all-inclusive from $325 to $395 a night for two. Guests rate the service 9.35 and like the choice of pool and beach areas. Food is its weakest score at 7.9, with guests describing it as inconsistent. Choose it if you want to walk to the ferry and the beach bars.
Breathless Cancun Soul Resort & Spa (Adults Only)
Rated 8.8/10 across 1,570 reviews, Breathless is an adults-only all-inclusive on the bay at km 4.5, about 1.3 km from Playa Tortugas, and the most expensive start here, from $438 to $643 a night for two. Guests praise the service (9.1) and the clean, spacious rooms (8.9). The criticism is about value: guests say the food could be better and some extras feel overpriced. Not an option for families.

Playa Tortugas is Cancún's main departure point for Isla Mujeres catamarans, and every tour below checks in at the piers or ticket booths on this beach, so you can walk or take the bus to the start. Most are full-day catamaran trips with a snorkel stop, an open bar, lunch and free time on Isla Mujeres; two are private catamarans; and one is the adults-only hip hop boat party (18 and over, with a 10 USD port fee paid in cash at check-in). All nine are rated at least 4.5 out of 5 and have reviews posted in the past six months. Isla Contoy trips usually collect you from your hotel rather than leaving from this pier; our Isla Contoy tour guide compares them. Best Time to Visit Playa Tortugas, and Tips
For beach quality, November to April is the safest window: dry season, and outside the usual sargassum season. Our best time to visit Cancún guide covers weather, crowds and prices month by month. Within the day, swim early, before the first ferry at 9:15 a.m. and the catamaran check-ins, when the beach is quiet and the water is at its calmest.
- Pair the beach with the ferry: swim first, take the 10:45 a.m. or 12:15 p.m. boat to Isla Mujeres, and come back on a later one. The last boat back to Playa Tortugas leaves the island at 7:00 p.m.
- Carry pesos and small dollars: the 36.56 MXN ferry environmental fee is charged on top of the fare, and the hip hop boat party collects its 10 USD port fee in cash.
- Say no politely: tour and water-sport sellers work the beach and the terminal. If you have already booked, head straight to your operator's booth.
- Watch the depth with children: the shallow water near the shore gets deeper toward the piers, so keep little ones close and away from the boat lanes.
- Go by bus if you can: parking near the terminal fills in high season, and Hotel Zone buses stop by the beach.
- Want it quieter? Playa Langosta, 18 minutes' walk west, has the same calm bay water with far fewer boats. Our Cancún with kids guide and best things to do in Cancún guide cover the rest of the trip.
How We Researched This Guide
Most pages about Playa Tortugas repeat an old ferry timetable and never say which hotels are actually close. Our team reviewed Ultramar's own timetable and fares, mapped the beach from OpenStreetMap and Mapbox data, checked every tour's meeting point, and ranked nearby hotels from verified guest reviews and live prices.
Ferry, map and distances
The ferry timetable and fares come from Ultramar's official site, checked on October 5, 2026, for several dates from mid-October through November 2026. Map positions come from OpenStreetMap (the beach, the ferry terminal, piers, parking and the bus stop) and Mapbox place search (the beach, Casa Tortugas and the neighbouring beaches). Drive and walking times come from the Mapbox Directions API, without traffic; the airport, downtown and Punta Cancún figures match our best beaches in Cancún table. Facilities and water conditions are drawn from local beach guides and guest reports; we do not report day-to-day sea or sargassum conditions.
Hotels
We pulled every property our reservation system lists near Playa Tortugas and measured each in a straight line to the mapped shoreline. We kept hotels and resorts with a guest score of 8.0 or higher on at least 300 verified reviews, removed apartments, condos, vacation rentals and hostels, and required bookable rates on at least four of five sample check-in dates (two adults, three nights, November 19 and December 10, 2026, and January 14, February 11 and March 11, 2027). We start at 1,000 m and widen in steps until four or five hotels pass. Within 1,000 m only Riu Palace Peninsula passed: Riu Caribe (8.8) returned rates on three of five dates and Real Inn Cancún (8.0) on none. At 1.5 km, seven passed, so we stopped there. One listing, for Temptation Cancun Resort, carried a map position at Playa Tortugas although the resort is at km 3.5, about 2.5 km away, so we used its real location and it fell outside the radius.
The Royal Cancun appears twice in our reservation system under the same name and address. We merged the two listings: the guest score and review count come from the listing with the most reviews, the rates and the booking link come from the bookable listing, and a sample date counts as bookable if either listing had a rate.
Weighted score = (reviews × guest score + 300 × 8.8) ÷ (reviews + 300)
Every hotel starts as if it already had 300 reviews at a baseline of 8.8, and its real reviews pull it away from that baseline. Four hotels tied at 8.80 because their guest score equals the baseline; we broke the tie by review count. The ranking uses guest score and review count only; distance, board and price shape what we say about each hotel, not where it ranks.
| # | Hotel | Guest score | Reviews | Weighted score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Holiday Inn Club Vacations The Royal Cancun | 9.0 | 1,441 | 8.97 |

| 5 | Breathless Cancun Soul Resort & Spa | 8.8 | 1,570 | 8.80 |
| 6 | La Villa du Golf à Cancun Hotel Boutique | 8.8 | 1,195 | 8.80 |
| 7 | Meliá Casa Maya Cancún | 8.4 | 303 | 8.60 |
La Villa du Golf and Meliá Casa Maya placed sixth and seventh and are not shown.
Tours
The nine tours are the most-reviewed tours whose listed meeting point is at Playa Tortugas: the Ultramar terminal area, the Caribbean Carnival pier or the operator booths beside them. We checked each listing's own meeting-point details. Every one is active, rated at least 4.5 out of 5, and has reviews from the past six months; most have dozens in the past year. None of the Isla Contoy tours we checked leaves from this pier, so none is included.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Isla Mujeres ferry leave from Playa Tortugas?+
Yes. Ultramar runs a ferry to Isla Mujeres from its Playa Tortugas terminal at km 6.5 of Boulevard Kukulcán, with seven departures a day at 9:15, 10:45 a.m., 12:15, 1:45, 3:15, 4:30 and 6:00 p.m. Boats back leave Isla Mujeres from 9:45 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This is the timetable on Ultramar's site on October 5, 2026; it can change without notice.
How much is the Playa Tortugas ferry to Isla Mujeres?+
290 MXN one way or 580 MXN round trip per adult, and 220 MXN or 440 MXN for a child up to 1.20 m tall, plus a 36.56 MXN environmental sanitation fee. Infants under 1 year travel free with a boarding pass. These are Ultramar's fares as checked on October 5, 2026.
Where is Playa Tortugas in Cancún?+
Playa Tortugas is at km 6 to 6.5 of Boulevard Kukulcán, on the bay side of the north Hotel Zone between Playa Langosta and Punta Cancún. It is about 24.4 km and 32 minutes by car from Cancún airport, about 9 km and 18 minutes from downtown, and Hotel Zone buses stop by the beach.
Is Playa Tortugas good for swimming?+
Yes, near the shore. It faces the sheltered Bahía de Mujeres, so the water is calm and shallow with low waves, but it gets deeper toward the piers and the boat channel, and guests say the swell can pick up in the afternoon. Keep children close to the sand and away from the boat lanes, and follow the flags.
What is Casa de Playa Tortugas in Cancún?+
Two places use the name. Casa Tortugas Boutique Hotel is a small, family-run hotel with kitchen suites and a lagoon-view pool on Calle Cenzontle at km 6.5, across the boulevard from Playa Tortugas and about a 3-minute walk from the beach; it is not in our reservation system, so we have not ranked it. Casa Playa Tortugas is a private oceanfront villa for large groups in Isla Blanca, about 12 miles north of Cancún, and is not at Playa Tortugas.
What are the best hotels near Playa Tortugas?+
Within 1.5 km, Holiday Inn Club Vacations The Royal Cancun is #1 by our weighted score (9.0 across 1,441 reviews, all-inclusive from $231). Sina Suites has the lowest starting rate at $69 room only, and Riu Palace Peninsula is the closest, about 250 m from the sand, all-inclusive from $325. Few hotels sit on the beach itself.
Does Playa Tortugas have sargassum?+
Its exposure is low. Playa Tortugas faces north into the sheltered bay, so it gets far less sargassum than the open-Caribbean beaches of the south Hotel Zone, though some can still arrive in a heavy year. The season usually peaks from June to August. For today's conditions, check the SEMA Quintana Roo sargassum traffic light.
Which boat tours leave from Playa Tortugas?+
Many Isla Mujeres catamarans check in at the Playa Tortugas piers, including Joluga, Oceanix, Caribean Golden and Boat Trips Club, and the adults-only hip hop boat party leaves from the Caribbean Carnival pier next to the Ultramar terminal. Check your voucher for the exact booth and check-in time.
