Playa Langosta is the calm, shallow bay beach at km 5 of Cancún's Hotel Zone. We cover which boats really use its pier, where the Isla Mujeres ferries leave from, parking, sargassum and the five best-rated hotels within 1 km.

What You Should Know

  • Playa Langosta faces the sheltered Bahía de Mujeres, not the open Caribbean, so the water is shallow and nearly flat. Local beach listings put the depth at about half a metre for the first 10 m, which is why families with small children pick it.
  • The pier is not a public ferry terminal. Dolphin Discovery runs a free 9:00 am ferry from it for guests booked on its Isla Mujeres programs. The public ferries leave from El Embarcadero (km 4.5, about a 12-minute walk west), Playa Tortugas (km 6.5) and Puerto Juárez.
  • Entry is free and the beach has toilets, showers, lifeguards and wheelchair ramps, but the free parking lot is small. Local listings advise arriving before 10 or 11 am in high season.
  • Because it faces north into the bay, Langosta is one of the Hotel Zone beaches least exposed to sargassum. It is not immune, so check the state's daily sargassum traffic light before a summer visit.

Playa Langosta Cancún: The Short Answer

Playa Langosta is a free public beach at around km 5 of Boulevard Kukulcán, on the bay side of Cancún's north Hotel Zone. Its water is among the calmest in Cancún: shallow, warm and almost waveless, with lifeguards, public bathrooms and a pier in the middle of the sand. This guide covers what the pier is actually used for, where the Isla Mujeres ferries really leave from, how exposed the beach is to sargassum, how to get there and park, and the five best-rated hotels within 1 km, ranked by our weighted guest score and priced live.

If you want surf and the famous turquoise postcard view, Langosta is the wrong beach; our Playa Delfines guide covers the open-Caribbean side. If you want calm water for small children or a lazy swim, it is one of the best choices in the city, alongside its neighbour at Punta Cancún covered in our Playa Caracol guide. Our best beaches in Cancún guide compares every public beach side by side.

The Playa Langosta Pier (Muelle) and the Ferry Question

The short answer to "playa langosta cancun ferry" is that no public Isla Mujeres ferry leaves from the Playa Langosta pier. Ultramar lists three Cancún departure points (Puerto Juárez, Playa Tortugas at km 6.5 and Playa Caracol at km 9.5), and Xcaret Xailing sails from El Embarcadero at km 4.5. The Langosta muelle is used by tour boats, most notably Dolphin Discovery, which runs one free ferry departure at 9:00 am from Playa Langosta for guests booked on its swim-with-dolphins programs at its Isla Mujeres park, returning at 5:30 pm to the same pier. Local beach listings also describe it as a departure point for catamaran tours; if you have booked a tour, your voucher names the pier, and it is just as likely to be El Embarcadero or Playa Tortugas.

ℹ️ Terminals and operators verified in October 2026 against Ultramar's published routes, Xcaret Xailing's ferry information and Dolphin Discovery's directions page. Walking and driving distances are approximate, from the Mapbox Directions API, measured from the Playa Langosta parking lot. Timetables change by season: check Ultramar's routes and departures page before you go.

For a hotel near Langosta, El Embarcadero is the closest public ferry: walk west along the boulevard past the Calinda Bridge. The Hotel Zone ferries cost more and run less often than Puerto Juárez, so if you are going over on a budget, the taxi to Puerto Juárez can still pay for itself. What to do once you land is in our things to do in Isla Mujeres guide, and the island's own calm-water beach is covered in our Playa Norte guide.

What Playa Langosta Is Like: Water, Sand and Swimming

Playa Langosta is a calm-water bay beach: the Hotel Zone's north arm faces the Bahía de Mujeres rather than the open sea, so the swell that pounds the long south strip barely reaches it. Local beach listings put the depth at roughly 50 cm for the first 10 m from the shore and describe the waves as minimal. That makes it one of the few Cancún beaches where a toddler can sit in the water and a weak swimmer can wade out without fighting the surf.

Swimming and safety

The beach has a lifeguard station, and the usual Mexican beach flag system applies: check the flag at the tower before you swim, even on a flat day. Calm is not the same as risk-free. The bottom drops off more in places (beach listings note the water is shallower toward Breathless and deeper toward Casa Maya), and boats use the pier in the middle of the beach, so swim to either side of it rather than under it.

Who it suits, and who it does not

  • Families with young children: the shallow shelf and flat water are the main reasons to come. It is also one of the city's designated inclusive beaches, with ramps for wheelchair users.
  • Lazy swimmers and floaters: the water is usually calm enough to swim laps parallel to the shore.
  • Not for surf or the big turquoise view: the open-Caribbean beaches south of Punta Cancún have the colour and the waves. Playa Langosta's appeal is the opposite.
  • Not for snorkelling: there is no reef off the beach. For reef snorkelling, book a boat; the tours below cover the options.

Our take (bay side or ocean side): If anyone in your group is under about six or not a confident swimmer, we would plan beach days on the bay side (Langosta, Tortugas or Caracol) and treat the ocean-side beaches as a photo stop. Coming from downtown, Playa Las Perlas at km 2 is the first calm bay-side beach on the boulevard, with a playground and lifeguards. Our Cancún with kids guide covers the rest of a family itinerary.

Facilities, Public Access and Parking

Playa Langosta is a public beach with free entry. There is no ticket, no wristband and no time limit, and the main access is straight off Boulevard Kukulcán at the parking lot.

  • Facilities: public bathrooms and showers next to the parking area, lifeguards, ramps for wheelchairs, a children's play area, a snack bar and restaurant, and umbrella, lounger and kayak rental. Shade on the sand is limited, so bring your own or rent.
  • Parking: a small free lot by the beach. It fills quickly, and local listings advise arriving before 10 or 11 am in high season; a small tip for the attendant is appreciated. There is also paid parking at El Embarcadero, about 1 km west.
  • Accessibility: Langosta is one of Cancún's designated inclusive beaches, with ramps for wheelchairs. Our Cancún for seniors guide covers the other accessible beaches and getting around.
  • Hotels on the sand: the beach is public, but loungers, pools and bars belonging to the resorts behind it are for hotel guests.

Sargassum at Playa Langosta: How Exposed Is It?

Playa Langosta is one of the Hotel Zone beaches least exposed to sargassum. The north arm of the Hotel Zone, from Playa Caracol and Punta Cancún west through Playa Tortugas and Langosta, faces north into the Bahía de Mujeres. The large seaweed rafts arrive from the open Caribbean to the east, so the long south-facing strip that includes Playa Delfines takes the brunt, while the bay beaches sit in its lee. That is an argument from orientation, not a guarantee: in a heavy week, some seaweed can still reach the bay.

The season usually runs from about April to October and peaks from June to August, with November to April normally the clearest months. 2026 has been a record year across Quintana Roo, which is a good reason to check before a summer beach day rather than assume.

How to check today's conditions

We do not report live conditions on this page. For today, use the sargassum traffic light (semáforo): green for little or no seaweed, yellow for moderate, orange for high and red for very high. The Quintana Roo government issues it with the Navy (SEMAR) through the state environment ministry, SEMA, and the Red de Monitoreo del Sargazo de Quintana Roo publishes regular beach-by-beach traffic-light maps. Our Cancún sargassum season guide covers the month-by-month pattern, and our Isla Mujeres sargassum guide covers the island across the bay.

How to Get to Playa Langosta

Playa Langosta sits around km 5 of Boulevard Kukulcán, the single road along the Hotel Zone, on the bay side between El Embarcadero and Playa Tortugas. Drive times below are approximate and assume no traffic; the boulevard is slow at rush hour and on weekends.

Hotels Near Playa Langosta: Compare and Book

We ranked every hotel within 1,000 m of the Playa Langosta pier that met our floors: a guest score of 8.0 or higher on at least 300 reviews, and bookable rates on at least four of five sample check-in dates. Five passed. The order is our weighted score (the formula is in the methodology at the end of this guide), so it measures guest satisfaction, not distance or price.

ℹ️ Mixed price bases: four of the five "from" prices are each hotel's cheapest board, which was all-inclusive or breakfast on most dates, while The Sens's lowest rate is room only (its all-inclusive rate was about $6 a night more on our November date). Guest scores, review counts and boards come from our hotel reservation system and were verified on October 5, 2026. Prices are per night for two adults on a three-night stay, before local taxes and fees, across five check-in dates from November 19, 2026 to February 18, 2027. 1. Holiday Inn Club Vacations The Royal Cancun

Rated 9.0/10 across 1,441 guest reviews, The Royal Cancun is #1 by our weighted score and the strongest all-round record near Playa Langosta, with 9.7 for service and 9.5 for cleanliness, location and rooms. It is a suites resort at km 4.5 with fully equipped kitchens, a kids' club and a sheltered bay beach, and guest reviews single out the beach for children. All-inclusive was its cheapest board, from $231 a night for two in November, but $929 on our mid-February date, the widest swing on this page. Amenities and value both score 8.0, and guests mention limited evening entertainment and extra charges for some menu items. We would book it for a family that wants room to spread out within a short walk of the calm water.

2. Breathless Cancun Soul Resort & Spa

Rated 8.8/10 across 1,570 reviews, Breathless is adults only and the ranked hotel closest to the pier, about 130 m away, with the beach directly in front. Service scores 9.13 and rooms 8.92. It is the most expensive hotel here, from $430 to $639 a night for two, and food (8.36) and value (8.41) are its lowest scores. We would book it for couples who want an adults-only resort on the calm side of the Hotel Zone; families should look at the other four.

3. Meliá Casa Maya Cancún

Rated 8.4/10 across 303 reviews, the smallest review base on this page, Casa Maya sits about 250 m east of the pier at km 5.5, with a water park, water slide and kids' pool that families praise. Location scores 9.3 and service 9.26. Its weak spots are clear in the data: food and beverage scores 6.79 and cleanliness 7.79, with reviews mentioning mould in a room. It priced between $335 and $384 a night for two, and the cheapest board changed from date to date. We would choose it for children who will spend more time on slides than on the sand, and eat out some nights.

4. The Sens Cancun by Oasis

Rated 8.4/10 across 1,260 reviews, The Sens is about 440 m west of the pier at km 4.5, and the only hotel here whose cheapest rate was room only, from $219 to $264 a night for two, with all-inclusive only a few dollars more. Service scores 9.65 and location 9.15, but room quality scores 7.65 and food 7.15, and guests mention too few pool loungers. It is the lowest-priced option within 500 m of the beach.

5. Occidental Costa Cancún

Rated 8.3/10 across 3,093 reviews, the most reviewed hotel on this page, Occidental Costa is an all-inclusive at km 4.5, about 870 m west of the pier and close to El Embarcadero. It had the lowest starting rate in our sample, $201 a night for two all-inclusive in January, and value scores 9.55. Cleanliness scores 5.55, the lowest category score on this page, and guests describe dated rooms. We would book it only if budget is the deciding factor, and would walk to Langosta for the calmest water.

Best Time to Visit Playa Langosta

  • Time of day: morning. The parking lot fills by late morning in high season, and the sun is less punishing before midday on a beach with little natural shade.
  • Season: November to April is dry and usually the clearest of sargassum. May to October is hotter, wetter and the sargassum season, though the bay side is less exposed than the ocean side.
  • Hurricane season: June to November. A storm warning can close the port, which stops the ferries and boat tours.

Our best time to visit Cancún guide covers weather, crowds and prices month by month.

Most Popular Tours Near Playa Langosta

These are the nine most-reviewed tours that suit a Playa Langosta base: Isla Mujeres catamarans and snorkel trips that leave from the north Hotel Zone, plus Cancún's most-booked water tours. Every one is active, rated 4.5 or higher, and has guest reviews from the past month.

  • Leaving within walking distance: Grupo Xcaret's Isla Mujeres catamaran departs El Embarcadero at km 4.5 at 9:00 am. The Dancer Cruise checks in at 9:00 am at its pier by the Calinda Bridge, with a $20 cash dock fee per person aged five and up. Oceanix's all-inclusive Isla Mujeres catamaran and Joluga's premium catamaran both check in at Playa Tortugas, as does the adults-only hip hop boat party (18 and over).
  • With hotel pickup: Cancun Adventures' Isla Mujeres sailing (pickup about $20 extra), the reef snorkel with beach club, and Total Snorkel's five-in-one snorkel trip all offer transport from Hotel Zone hotels.
  • On the lagoon: the drive-your-own speedboat jungle tour leaves from km 16.2 on the lagoon side, a taxi ride south.
  • Watch for dock fees: most boat tours here charge a separate dock or marine park fee at check-in, so budget for it on top of the price.

Our guides to Cancún snorkeling tours, sunset cruises and catamarans and the hip hop boat party compare these in detail.

Tips for Visiting Playa Langosta

  • Arrive before 10 am if you are driving: the free lot is small and fills fast in high season.
  • Do not expect a public ferry at the pier: for Isla Mujeres, walk about 12 minutes west to El Embarcadero or go to Playa Tortugas, where the Ultramar ferry leaves from the beach, or Puerto Juárez. The Langosta pier's 9:00 am ferry is for Dolphin Discovery guests.
  • Bring shade: umbrellas can be rented, but there is little natural shade on the sand.
  • Swim beside the pier, not under it: tour boats come and go from it in the morning and late afternoon.
  • Check the sargassum traffic light in summer: Langosta is sheltered, but a heavy week can still bring seaweed into the bay.
  • Carry cash: for the parking attendant, the snack bar and dock fees if you are joining a boat tour nearby.
  • Pair it with the island: the calm water continues across the bay at Playa Norte, and our Isla Mujeres snorkeling guide covers the reefs.

How We Selected the Hotels and Tours

Our team reviewed the facts on this page against primary sources where they exist: Ultramar's published routes, Xcaret Xailing's ferry information and Dolphin Discovery's directions for the pier and ferries, the state's sargassum monitoring for the traffic light, and local beach listings and OpenStreetMap for facilities. Distances come from the Mapbox Directions API. Where a source could not confirm a detail, such as a fixed public ferry timetable from the Langosta pier, we left it out.

Hotels

We started from every property our hotel reservation system lists within 1,000 m (straight line) of the Playa Langosta pier and public access, and removed condos, apartments, villas, guesthouses and duplicate records: 14 hotels. We kept those with a guest score of 8.0 or higher on at least 300 reviews (seven passed), then required bookable rates on at least four of five sample check-in dates (November 19 and December 10, 2026, and January 7, January 28 and February 18, 2027; two adults, three nights). Real Inn Cancún returned no rates on any date and Riu Caribe on only three, so five hotels remain. Riu Palace Peninsula, 8.8 across 2,164 reviews, sits just outside the radius at about 1,030 m.

The order uses two inputs only, guest score and review count, with no editorial adjustments:

Weighted score = (reviews × guest score + 300 × 8.8) ÷ (reviews + 300)

Tours

For the nine tours, we took the most-reviewed tours from Cancún that fit this beach: Isla Mujeres catamarans and snorkel trips that leave from the north Hotel Zone (El Embarcadero, the Calinda Bridge pier and Playa Tortugas) or pick up from Hotel Zone hotels, plus Cancún's most-booked water tours. Each had to be active, rated 4.5 or higher, and have recent guest reviews; we checked departure points against each listing's own meeting-point details.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Playa Langosta good for swimming?+

Yes. Playa Langosta faces the sheltered Bahía de Mujeres, so the water is calm and shallow, about half a metre deep for the first 10 m according to local beach listings. It has lifeguards, which makes it one of the easiest swimming beaches in Cancún. Check the flag at the lifeguard tower and swim beside the pier, not under it.

Does the Isla Mujeres ferry leave from Playa Langosta?+

No public ferry does. Ultramar sails from Puerto Juárez, Playa Tortugas (km 6.5) and Playa Caracol (km 9.5), and Xcaret Xailing from El Embarcadero (km 4.5), about a 12-minute walk west of Langosta. The Langosta pier is used by Dolphin Discovery's free 9:00 am ferry for guests booked on its Isla Mujeres programs, returning at 5:30 pm, and by some tour boats.

Is Playa Langosta free, and is there parking?+

Entry is free, with no time limit. There is a small free parking lot at the beach, which fills quickly in high season, so arrive before 10 or 11 am. Public bathrooms, showers, lifeguards and wheelchair ramps are on site, and umbrellas and loungers can be rented.

Does Playa Langosta have sargassum today?+

We do not report live conditions. Langosta faces north into the bay, so it is among the Hotel Zone beaches least exposed to sargassum, but heavy weeks can still bring some in, mainly from June to August. For today, check the Quintana Roo sargassum traffic light, issued with the Navy through the state environment ministry (SEMA), or the Red de Monitoreo del Sargazo's beach maps.

What are the best hotels near Playa Langosta?+

Holiday Inn Club Vacations The Royal Cancun is #1 by our weighted score, 9.0/10 across 1,441 reviews, from $231 a night for two all-inclusive. Breathless Cancun Soul (adults only) is the closest ranked hotel to the pier, Meliá Casa Maya has a water park, The Sens starts at $219 room only, and Occidental Costa Cancún had the lowest starting rate at $201.

How far is Playa Langosta from Cancún airport?+

About 23 km by road from Terminal 3 at Cancún International Airport, roughly 30 minutes by car without traffic. Downtown Cancún is about 8.3 km away (around 18 minutes) and Punta Cancún about 4.6 km (around 8 minutes). The R-1 and R-2 buses run along Boulevard Kukulcán past the beach.

Is Playa Langosta good for kids?+

It is one of the best beaches in Cancún for young children: shallow, nearly waveless water, lifeguards, bathrooms, showers and a children's play area. It has no reef and no surf, so older kids who want waves or snorkelling will prefer a boat trip or an ocean-side beach. Our Cancún with kids guide covers family activities.
