Playa Norte is not in Cancún itself: it sits at the north tip of Isla Mujeres, a ferry ride across the bay. Here is how to get there from Cancún with verified 2026 fares and times, how often sargassum reaches it, and the nearby hotels that pass our review floors.
What You Should Know
- Playa Norte is on Isla Mujeres, not on the Cancún mainland. From Cancún you take a ferry (Ultramar from Puerto Juárez, Playa Tortugas or Playa Caracol, or Xcaret Xailing from El Embarcadero), then walk about 0.9 km, roughly 11 minutes, from the island's ferry dock to the sand.
- Puerto Juárez has by far the most sailings: the schedule we pulled listed departures from 5:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., against seven a day from each Hotel Zone pier. The adult fare is the same 290 MXN one way at all three Ultramar piers.
- The water is shallow and calm because the beach faces west into the sheltered bay. That same orientation keeps sargassum rare to light here, and puts the sun setting over the sea in front of you.
- Catamaran tours from Cancún stop here around the middle of the day, so the sand is quietest early. Take one of the first ferries if you want it calm, and stay for sunset if you want the atmosphere.
Playa Norte Cancún: Where It Actually Is
Travelers search for Playa Norte Cancún, but the beach is not on the Cancún mainland. It wraps around the northern tip of Isla Mujeres, about 10 km across the Bahía de Mujeres from Cancún's main ferry pier at Puerto Juárez. Getting there takes a passenger ferry and a short walk, and in return you get some of the calmest, shallowest swimming water in the Cancún area, on a beach where the sun sets over the sea.
This guide covers the practical side: which Cancún pier to use and what it costs (fares and schedules checked on the operators' own sites on October 5, 2026), the walk or golf cart ride from the island's dock, what the beach is like, how often sargassum reaches it and how to check today's conditions, and which nearby hotels pass our review floors. For everything else on the island, our guide to things to do in Isla Mujeres covers the rest of the day, and our guide to the best beaches in Cancún compares Playa Norte with the mainland options.
How to Get to Playa Norte from Cancún
The short answer: take the Ultramar ferry from Puerto Juárez (290 MXN one way for an adult, departures roughly every 30 minutes through the day), then walk about 11 minutes from the Isla Mujeres dock to the beach. If you are staying in the Hotel Zone, Playa Tortugas, Playa Caracol and El Embarcadero are closer to your hotel but have far fewer sailings.
Step 1: the ferry from Cancún to Isla Mujeres
Four piers serve the island. Three are run by Ultramar and one by Xcaret Xailing. The fares and schedules below come from each operator's own website, checked on October 5, 2026, using the departures listed for October 15, 2026.
| Cancún Pier | Operator | Where | Adult Fare | Departures to the Island | Last Boat Back |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Puerto Juárez (Gran Puerto) | Ultramar | Av. López Portillo, north of downtown | 290 MXN one way, 580 MXN round trip | 5:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., about every 30 minutes until 6:00 p.m., then hourly | Listed until midnight |
| Playa Tortugas | Ultramar | Boulevard Kukulcán km 6.5, Hotel Zone | 290 MXN one way, 580 MXN round trip | 7 a day: 9:15 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. | 7:00 p.m. |
| Playa Caracol | Ultramar | Boulevard Kukulcán km 9.5, Hotel Zone | 290 MXN one way, 580 MXN round trip, plus a dock fee paid at the pier | 7 a day: 9:00 a.m. to 6:15 p.m. | 7:00 p.m. |
| El Embarcadero | Xcaret Xailing | Boulevard Kukulcán km 4.5, Hotel Zone | US$14.50 one way, US$28 round trip | Hourly, 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. | 8:00 p.m. |
ℹ️ Fares and schedules verified on the Ultramar and Xcaret Xailing websites on October 5, 2026. Ultramar child fares are 220 MXN one way (from age 1 up to 1.20 m tall), and its fare table also lists a 36.56 MXN environmental sanitation charge required by the municipality. Xailing charges US$11 one way for children aged 6 to 11. Both operators say schedules can change without notice and with the weather.
Ultramar's site does not publish a crossing time. The Puerto Juárez crossing, about 10 km in a straight line, is generally quoted at 15 to 20 minutes, while the three Hotel Zone piers sit about 13 km from the island dock, and Xcaret Xailing states 20 to 30 minutes for its crossing. Ultramar asks passengers to reach the terminal 30 minutes before departure, and its tickets are valid for six months on any departure of the same route.
Which pier to use
The table below gives approximate drive times without traffic, calculated with Mapbox directions from the Cancún airport terminals, from downtown (Parque de las Palapas) and from Punta Cancún in the Hotel Zone.
| From | Puerto Juárez | Playa Tortugas | Playa Caracol | El Embarcadero |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cancún airport (CUN terminals) | 22 to 24 km, 30 to 40 min | 24 to 27 km, 32 to 41 min | 24 to 26 km, 35 to 44 min | 23 to 26 km, 31 to 41 min |
| Downtown (Parque de las Palapas) | 4.6 km, 12 min | 8.7 km, 16 min | 11.9 km, 22 min | 7.7 km, 16 min |
| Hotel Zone (Punta Cancún) | 13.5 km, 24 min | 3.3 km, 7 min | 0.6 km, 3 min | 5.6 km, 11 min |
ℹ️ Approximate drive times without traffic, calculated with Mapbox in October 2026. Airport figures are a range across the CUN terminals.
- Staying downtown or arriving with flexible plans: Puerto Juárez is 12 minutes away and has the most departures, including early boats and late returns. Ultramar's own directions say the AUTOCAR R-1 bus runs to Puerto Juárez, and parking is available at the terminal.
- Staying near Punta Cancún: Playa Caracol is a 3-minute drive, and the fare is the same, but there are only seven boats a day and a separate dock fee. Our Playa Caracol guide covers that beach and pier.
- Staying around km 4 to 7: Playa Tortugas and El Embarcadero are the closest. Ultramar says Hotel Zone buses stop at Playa Tortugas.
- Coming straight from the airport: budget 30 to 45 minutes of driving to any pier before you add the crossing. Our Cancún airport transfer guide compares the ways to get from the terminals into town.
Step 2: from the Isla Mujeres dock to Playa Norte
Both Ultramar and Xcaret Xailing land on Avenida Rueda Medina in the island's town centre. From there, walking is the simplest option: Mapbox puts it at about 0.9 km and 11 minutes, west along Rueda Medina, right onto Avenida Madero, left onto Avenida Juárez, right onto Calle Matamoros and left onto Calle Carlos Lazo, which ends at the sand by Buho's beach bar. The route runs through the town centre, past restaurants and shops.
- Taxi: taxis wait at the ferry dock. It is about 1 km and 5 minutes by road. Confirm the fare with the driver before you set off.
- Golf cart: rental shops in town rent carts by the hour or day. Prisma Golf Carts, for example, lists US$26 for an hour and US$75 for 24 hours on a regular cart for most of autumn 2026, and requires a valid driver's licence. A cart only pays off if you also plan to drive to the south of the island; for Playa Norte alone, walking is faster than parking. A lot listed as Estacionamiento Playa Norte sits near the lighthouse end of the beach.
What Playa Norte Is Like
Playa Norte curves around the northern tip of Isla Mujeres, facing west and north into the Bahía de Mujeres rather than out to the open Caribbean. That orientation explains almost everything about it.
Shallow, calm water
The sea floor shelves very gently, and you can walk a long way out while still standing. There is little or no swell on a normal day, which is why families with small children and weak swimmers choose it over the surf on Cancún's south Hotel Zone strip. Calm is not the same as risk-free: check the beach flags on the day, keep children within reach even in knee-deep water, and watch for boat traffic beyond the swimming area.
Sunsets over the sea
Because the beach faces west, the sun sets over the water in front of you, which is unusual on a coast that mostly faces east. Sunset is when Playa Norte is at its liveliest, and the beach bars fill up for it. If you are on a day trip, check the last boat back before you settle in: Ultramar's last listed returns to the Hotel Zone piers were at 7:00 p.m. and Xcaret Xailing's at 8:00 p.m., while boats to Puerto Juárez ran until midnight.
Beach clubs on the sand
Beach bars and clubs line the sand, including Buho's Beach Bar, at the end of Calle Carlos Lazo, and Fenix Lounge and Beach Club, toward the hotel end of the beach by Calle Zazil Ha. Loungers and shade usually come with a minimum spend, and 2026 reports put that at roughly 200 to 500 MXN. The stretches of sand between the clubs stay public, so you can spread a towel without spending anything. Hotels such as Na Balam and Casa del Jaguar front the eastern end of the beach.
Crowds
Several of the most-booked catamaran tours from Cancún build their island stop around Playa Norte, so the beach gets busier from late morning, when tour groups arrive, and again at sunset. Early on a weekday it is noticeably quieter. If you want a beach day without the crowds of Cancún's Hotel Zone, the first ferries are the way to get it.
Most Popular Tours
Does Playa Norte Get Sargassum?
Rarely, and usually lightly. Playa Norte faces west, toward the mainland, and sits behind the island itself. Sargassum drifts in from the open Atlantic and Caribbean to the east, so it lands first on the island's exposed east coast, while the north tip stays sheltered. That is the same pattern behind the mainland: Cancún's north Hotel Zone beaches facing the bay stay clearer than the south strip facing the open sea, as our Cancún sargassum season guide explains beach by beach.
Rare is not never. The regional season usually peaks from June to August, and in winter a strong cold front (a norte) can push seaweed around the tip; in the record 2026 season, one March event put more than 50 tons on Playa Norte. Municipal crews clear the beach quickly when that happens. Our Isla Mujeres sargassum guide has the month-by-month pattern for the whole island.
Where to check the official status
- The state sargassum semáforo: Quintana Roo's Secretaría de Ecología y Medio Ambiente (SEMA) publishes a daily traffic-light report of sargassum presence at monitored beaches, with a morning cutoff, through its website and the state government's social channels. Green means little or no sargassum and red very high presence. During the peak of the 2026 season, in mid-June, the semáforo kept Playa Norte in its green or blue categories.
- The Red de Monitoreo del Sargazo de Quintana Roo: this monitoring network posts its own regional reports and beach photos on its Facebook page.
Playa Norte Today: How to Check the Latest Conditions
We do not publish today's conditions, because they change faster than any guide can. Before you head to the pier, three checks cover what matters:
- Sargassum: look at the latest SEMA semáforo and the newest dated beach photos from the Red de Monitoreo del Sargazo (both linked above). A report from the same morning beats any seasonal average.
- The ferry: the Ultramar and Xcaret Xailing websites show the departures for your date, and both say schedules depend on the weather. Ultramar lists customer service on +52 998 460 3084 by phone and WhatsApp. In a strong cold front, check before you travel.
- The water: on the beach, look at the flags and the wrack line. If seaweed has landed overnight, crews usually clear it during the morning.
Best Time to Visit Playa Norte
- Time of day: the first boats from Puerto Juárez (from 5:30 a.m.) get you to the sand before the tour catamarans arrive. Midday is the busiest stretch, and late afternoon into sunset is the most atmospheric.
- November to April: the dry season and the cleanest months for sargassum. The trade-off is that occasional cold fronts can make the crossing choppy and, now and then, push seaweed onto the beach.
- May to October: hotter and more humid, with the regional sargassum peak from June to August, when Playa Norte usually holds up far better than the mainland. Whale shark tours from the island run in this window, roughly mid-May to mid-September.
Our best time to visit Isla Mujeres guide weighs weather, crowds and prices month by month, and Isla Mujeres in October covers this month in detail.

How to choose
If waking up on the sand is the point, Casa del Jaguar and Na Balam are both on Calle Zazil Ha at the beachfront, about 60 m from the water. Casa del Jaguar scores higher (8.9 across 303 reviews, with guests singling out the beach access) but started at $599 a night, more than double Na Balam's $249. At Na Balam, guests praise the staff and the location, and the recurring complaints are cleanliness (7.2 in its category scores) and an inconsistent breakfast.
If you would rather spend less and walk five minutes, The Mermaid and The Pearl is #1 by our weighted score, with a 10 for service and a rooftop pool, about 365 m from the beach in town. Its weaker category scores are cleanliness and room quality, both 8.65. Fitz-Mar is the budget option, room-only from $62, with guests citing location, staff and value, and mentioning water pressure as the main complaint.
If you want adults-only, Privilege Aluxes is the most reviewed hotel here (1,525 reviews), by the lighthouse at the west end, with two pools and a spa. Guests rate its location (9.4) and food (9.1) highly, while cleanliness (7.6) and noisy groups around the pool are the recurring complaints. Hotel Bahia Chac Chi is adults-only too and the cheapest of the six on most dates, but it sits by the ferry dock, about 850 m from Playa Norte, and does not include breakfast.
Hotel Villa Kiin, also on Calle Zazil Ha and the closest of the seven to the sand, passed every floor and placed seventh by our weighted score (8.0 across 358 reviews, room-only from $112).

If you would rather not organise the ferry yourself, these are the nine most-reviewed Isla Mujeres tours with a rating of 4.5 or higher, each with reviews posted within the last six months. Six leave from Cancún, two from the island, and one from either. Several build their island stop around Playa Norte: the Cancun Adventures sailing, the all-inclusive catamaran from Playa Tortugas and Boat Trips Club's Cancún catamaran all include free time on the beach.
- Catamarans from Cancún: a sail across the bay with a snorkel stop, lunch and an open bar, then time on the island. Most last five to eight hours, and a private catamaran for up to 13 people is the option for groups. For an evening version, see our Cancún sunset cruise guide.
- Snorkel trips from the island: Island Adventures Mexico runs three-hour snorkel trips from Avenida Hidalgo in town, a short walk from Playa Norte, including a semi-private version. Our Isla Mujeres snorkeling guide compares the reefs and the underwater museum.
- Whale sharks, in season only: Isla Fun Tours runs whale shark trips from the island or Cancún, and Contoy Adventures adds an hour on Playa Norte with ceviche on the way back. Their next listed seasons run from mid to late May until September 17, 2027. Our whale shark tours from Isla Mujeres guide covers the season.

Our Take
For a day trip, we would take an early boat from Puerto Juárez rather than a Hotel Zone pier: the fare is the same, the sailings are far more frequent, and the late returns let you stay for sunset without watching the clock.
Tips for Visiting Playa Norte
- Buy a round-trip ticket only if you are sure of the pier: Ultramar tickets are tied to a route, so a Puerto Juárez return will not take you back to Playa Caracol.
- Carry pesos: Ultramar's fares are set in pesos, and beach club minimum spends are usually in pesos too.
- Pick your spot by the clubs: pay for a lounger at a club if you want shade and a bathroom, or use the public stretches between them with your own towel.
- Mind the shallows: the water stays shallow a long way out, which is ideal for children, but you will wade a while before it is deep enough to swim properly.
- Plan around the tour boats: catamaran groups arrive from late morning. Arrive before them or come back for sunset.
- Pair it with the island: Playa Norte fills half a day. Our things to do in Isla Mujeres guide covers Punta Sur and the rest of the island, and our Playa Langosta guide covers the calm bay beach next to the Playa Tortugas pier if you want a mainland swim before the boat.
How We Selected the Hotels and Tours
Our team reviewed every property our hotel reservation system lists within 1,000 m of Playa Norte, measured in a straight line from each property's listed coordinates to the nearest edge of the beach as mapped in OpenStreetMap. We removed condos, apartments, hostels and duplicate listings, then applied the same floors as our other Cancún-area hotel guides: a guest score of 8.0 or higher on at least 300 reviews, and bookable rates on at least four of five sample check-in dates (two adults, three nights, from November 19, 2026 to March 11, 2027). We did not lower those floors for Isla Mujeres, even though its hotels are smaller.
Seven hotels passed. Most of the rest failed on review volume: Lotus Beach Hotel (9.8 across 188 reviews) and several small guesthouses score highly on too few reviews. MÍA Reef (7.3), Hotel Posada del Mar (7.5), Hotel Bucaneros (7.7) and Hotel Belmar (7.0) fell below the score floor. Ixchel Beach Hotel, Nílu Isla Mujeres by Selina and The Mint Resort returned no guest score. Imperla Hotel (9.1 across 337 reviews) and Casa Barco (9.0 across 353) passed the review floors but returned no bookable rates on our dates, and Hotel Playa La Media Luna returned rates on only two of five.
How the ranking is calculated
The order is set by a formula, with no editorial adjustments. Distance, board and price shape what we say about each hotel, not where it ranks.
Weighted score = (reviews × guest score + 300 × 8.8) ÷ (reviews + 300)
Every hotel starts as if it had 300 reviews at a baseline of 8.8, and its real reviews pull it away from that baseline, so a high score on few reviews does not outrank a slightly lower score on many.
| # | Hotel | Guest score | Reviews | Weighted score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | The Mermaid and The Pearl Boutique Hotel | 9.3 | 322 | 9.06 |
| 2 | Casa del Jaguar Beach Hotel | 8.9 | 303 | 8.85 |
| 3 | Fitz-Mar | 8.6 | 423 | 8.68 |
| 4 | Privilege Aluxes Adults Only | 8.6 | 1,525 | 8.63 |
| 5 | Na Balam Hotel | 8.4 | 648 | 8.53 |
| 6 | Hotel Bahia Chac Chi | 8.3 | 1,353 | 8.39 |
| 7 | Hotel Villa Kiin | 8.0 | 358 | 8.37 |
For the tours, we pulled every Isla Mujeres listing and every Cancún listing that visits the island, kept those rated 4.5 or higher that are currently bookable and have reviews posted within the last six months, and took the nine with the most reviews, leaving out airport and ferry transfers. Ferry fares and schedules come from the Ultramar and Xcaret Xailing websites, drive and walk times from Mapbox directions, and the sargassum sources are named in the section above. Everything was checked on October 5, 2026.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Playa Norte in Cancún?+
No. Playa Norte is on Isla Mujeres, the island across the bay from Cancún, though many people search for it as Playa Norte Cancún. From Cancún it takes a ferry, about 15 to 30 minutes depending on the pier, plus an 11-minute walk from the island's ferry dock to the beach.
How do you get to Playa Norte from Cancún?+
Take a ferry to Isla Mujeres, then walk. Ultramar sails from Puerto Juárez (5:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. on the schedule we checked), Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol, and Xcaret Xailing from El Embarcadero. From the island dock, Playa Norte is about 0.9 km on foot through town, or a short taxi or golf cart ride.
How much is the ferry from Cancún to Playa Norte?+
On October 5, 2026, Ultramar listed 290 MXN one way and 580 MXN round trip for adults from all three of its Cancún piers, and 220 MXN one way for children. Its fare table also lists a 36.56 MXN municipal sanitation charge, and Playa Caracol adds a dock fee. Xcaret Xailing from El Embarcadero charged US$14.50 one way.
How far is Playa Norte from the Isla Mujeres ferry?+
About 0.9 km, roughly an 11-minute walk on Mapbox's walking directions, through the town grid and along Calle Carlos Lazo to the sand. Taxis wait at the dock if you have luggage, and golf carts rent nearby by the hour or day.
Does Playa Norte have sargassum?+
Rarely, and usually lightly. The beach faces west into the sheltered bay, away from the open sea where sargassum arrives. Winter cold fronts can push some onto the beach, as in one March 2026 event, but crews clear it quickly. Check the Quintana Roo SEMA semáforo for current conditions.
How can I check Playa Norte conditions today?+
Check the latest Quintana Roo SEMA sargassum semáforo and the newest dated photos from the Red de Monitoreo del Sargazo, then the ferry operator's website for your sailing, since schedules depend on the weather. On the beach itself, look at the flags. We do not publish same-day conditions because they change too quickly.
Is Playa Norte good for kids?+
Yes, it is one of the best family beaches in the Cancún area. The water is shallow a long way out and usually calm, because the beach faces the sheltered bay. Keep children within reach anyway, check the flags, and come early to avoid the midday tour-boat crowds.
What are the best hotels near Playa Norte?+
By our weighted score, The Mermaid and The Pearl (9.3 across 322 reviews, about 365 m from the beach) ranks first, followed by Casa del Jaguar (8.9, beachfront), Fitz-Mar (8.6, from $62), Privilege Aluxes (8.6, adults-only) and Na Balam (8.4, beachfront). Seven hotels within 1 km passed our floors.
