Eleven Cancún-area beaches compared side by side on sargassum exposure, swimming conditions, facilities, public access, crowds and drive time, with the top-rated hotel near each one.

What You Should Know

  • Every beach in Cancún is public by federal law, but access is not equal: ten of the eleven beaches below have a public entrance from Boulevard Kukulcán or the street, so you do not need to walk through a hotel lobby. Playa Mujeres is the exception: its shore is fronted by resorts inside a gated development.
  • Direction decides the water. The Hotel Zone turns at Punta Cancún around km 9: north of the turn the beaches face the sheltered Bahía de Mujeres and stay calm, south of it they face the open Caribbean with real waves and currents.
  • The same turn decides sargassum. The bay-facing beaches and Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres take the least seaweed in a heavy year; the open south strip, Playa Delfines included, takes the most.
  • Playa Delfines is the closest beach to the airport (about 14 km, 16 minutes without traffic), while the calm north-end beaches are 21 to 24 km and around half an hour away.

Best Beaches in Cancún: The Short Answer

The best beaches in Cancún split cleanly into two groups, and which one suits you depends on whether you want to swim or to look. For calm, shallow water, Playa Langosta at km 5 is our pick, with Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol close behind. For the classic wide, open-Caribbean beach and the photo, it is Playa Delfines at km 17.5, where the waves are strong enough that you should check the flag before swimming. And for the beach most likely to be clear in a bad sargassum week, take the ferry to Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres. If you would rather stay somewhere quieter than the Hotel Zone, Playa Mujeres on the mainland north of downtown is a resort-fronted beach for an all-inclusive stay rather than a day trip.

Below, eleven Cancún beaches are compared side by side on six things: sargassum exposure, swimming conditions, facilities, public access, crowds and how far each is from the airport, downtown and Punta Cancún. Each one gets a use-case label rather than a single "best overall" winner, because the best beach in Cancún for a family with a toddler is the wrong beach for a bodyboarder. Every beach also gets the hotel with the highest weighted guest score within 1,000 m, and the best beach resorts in Cancún page ranks the full field if you are choosing where to stay first.

Cancún Beaches Compared Side by Side

Beaches 1 to 10 are listed north to south from Playa Norte to Playa Delfines, and 11 is Playa Mujeres on the mainland north of downtown, matching the numbered pins on the map below. Sargassum exposure describes each beach's natural position, not today's conditions; see the sargassum section for where to check the current report.

Our Take

If we had one beach day in Cancún, we would split it: a morning swim at Playa Langosta while the bay is at its calmest, then the drive south to Playa Delfines in the late afternoon for the view from El Mirador. That gets you the best of both coasts in one day.

The 11 Best Beaches in Cancún, Mexico, by What You Want

We grouped these beaches by use rather than ranking them on one scale, and the criteria are simple. Best for calm swimming means bay-facing, shallow and sheltered. Least sargassum means the beach's orientation keeps it out of the main seaweed drift. Best for photos means open sea, wide sand and a viewpoint. Best for quiet means a public entrance that sees little foot traffic. Facilities, public access and lifeguards decide the order within each use. Under each beach is the hotel with the highest weighted guest score within 1,000 m, using the method in How We Selected.

1. Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres: Best for the Least Sargassum

Playa Norte is the beach to plan around if seaweed is your worry. It faces north and west at the tip of Isla Mujeres, out of the open-Caribbean drift that loads Cancún's south strip, and the water is so shallow you can wade a long way out and still stand. Beach clubs and restaurants sit on the sand, and loungers are for hire. The trade is the trip: it is a ferry ride from Cancún rather than a drive, so it is a day out rather than a quick swim. Our Playa Norte guide covers the ferry, the best stretch and the sunset.

Where to stay nearby: The Mermaid and The Pearl Boutique Hotel, a bed and breakfast about 430 m from the beach, is #1 by our weighted score here (9.3 across 322 reviews).

2. Playa Las Perlas: Best for a Quick Swim Near Downtown

At km 2.5, Las Perlas is the first beach you reach from the downtown bridge and the one locals use most. The water is bay-side and gentle, and there is a playground, palapas, showers and free parking. It is small and plain next to the beaches further along, but at 5.4 km from Parque de las Palapas it is the easiest swim if you are staying downtown. Full details, including its exact location, are in our Playa Las Perlas guide.

Where to stay nearby: no hotel within 1,000 m passed our floors (8.0 guest score on 300 reviews with steady rates). Our Playa Las Perlas guide widens the search to 2.5 km and ranks five, most of them closer to Playa Langosta.

3. Playa Langosta: Best for Calm Swimming With Kids

Playa Langosta is our answer to "which beach in Cancún is calmest?" It sits at km 5 on the bay side, the sea is shallow and sheltered, and a long pier splits the beach. Restrooms, showers and lifeguards are on site, which is why families favour it. The free car park is small (around 40 spaces), so arrive early on weekends. The Playa Langosta guide has the access points and best times.

Where to stay nearby: Holiday Inn Club Vacations The Royal Cancun, about 250 m away, is #1 by our weighted score near Langosta (9.0 across 1,441 reviews).

4. Playa Tortugas: Best for Activity and the Isla Mujeres Ferry

Tortugas at km 6.5 is calm, bay-side water with the most going on: restaurants, restrooms, water sports and a ferry pier with boats to Isla Mujeres. That pier is also the drawback, because the sand gets crowded around departures and the boat traffic makes it less of a lounging beach than Langosta next door. Ferry times, fares and the boats that leave from here are in our Playa Tortugas guide.

Where to stay nearby: Riu Palace Peninsula, about 350 m away, is #1 by our weighted score near Tortugas (8.8 across 2,164 reviews).

5. Playa Caracol: Best for Calm Water at Punta Cancún

Caracol is a small beach of about 75 m between two docks near Punta Cancún, and it is the last calm, bay-facing water before the coast turns to the open sea. It puts shallow swimming within walking distance of the Punta Cancún hotels and the ferry to Isla Mujeres. Do not count on public restrooms on the sand; Plaza Caracol is a short walk. More in our Playa Caracol guide.

Where to stay nearby: Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach, about 390 m away, is #1 by our weighted score near Caracol (9.4 across 2,678 reviews).

6. Playa Gaviota Azul: Best for a Swim Near the Nightlife

Gaviota Azul at km 9.5 is the open-Caribbean beach behind the Punta Cancún party strip, reached by a public alley between Coco Bongo and Mandala Beach. The surf is usually rolling waves but can swing from calm to red flag, so this is a beach for a swim and a walk rather than for small children. Our Playa Gaviota Azul guide maps the public access alley and ranks the hotels nearby.

Where to stay nearby: Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach again, about 350 m away (9.4 across 2,678 reviews).

7. Playa Chac Mool: Best for Bodyboarding Waves

Just south at km 10, Chac Mool takes the full open-sea swell, and its reliable waves draw bodyboarders. There is a lifeguard tower and a small free car park. It tends to be quieter than Gaviota Azul. If you are a weak swimmer, this is a beach to admire from the sand on a red-flag day.

Where to stay nearby: Le Blanc Spa Resort, adults-only, about 520 m away, is #1 by our weighted score near Chac Mool (9.6 across 546 reviews).

8. Playa Marlín: Best for a Mid-Strip Beach With Direct Access

Marlín at km 13 has direct access from the boulevard, restrooms, lifeguards and moderate waves, which makes it the practical public beach for the middle of the Hotel Zone. It is on the south-facing strip, so its sargassum exposure is higher than anything north of Punta Cancún.

Where to stay nearby: Live Aqua Cancun, adults-only, about 440 m away, is #1 by our weighted score near Marlín (9.4 across 1,476 reviews).

9. Playa Ballenas: Best for a Quiet Open-Caribbean Beach

Ballenas at km 14.5 is the beach to choose if you want the wide south-strip sand without the crowd. The public entrance sits between the Hard Rock and Secrets The Vine and is easy to miss, so it sees a fraction of the traffic. Facilities are basic (restrooms and showers, no restaurants or rentals), and the water is open sea. Our Playa Ballenas guide shows how to find the entrance.

Where to stay nearby: Secrets The Vine, adults-only, about 220 m away, is #1 by our weighted score near Ballenas (9.2 across 1,378 reviews).

10. Playa Delfines: Best for Photos and the Big Open-Sea View

Delfines at km 17.5 is the beach on most postcards: a long sweep of sand below the El Mirador lookout and the colourful Cancún sign, with free palapas, restrooms, showers, several lifeguard towers and free parking for more than 300 cars. It is also Cancún's most exposed beach, both to strong waves and currents and to sargassum. On a red-flag day, enjoy the view and swim somewhere calmer. Full details are in our Playa Delfines guide.

Where to stay nearby: Crown Paradise Club Cancun, about 660 m away, is the only hotel within 1,000 m that passed our floors (8.2 across 2,245 reviews). Our Playa Delfines guide widens the search to 1.5 km and ranks five.

11. Playa Mujeres: Best for a Resort Stay Away From the Hotel Zone

Playa Mujeres is the long, quiet stretch of mainland coast north of downtown Cancún, facing Isla Mujeres across the channel. The island screens it from the full open-Caribbean swell, so the surf is usually mild. It is not a beach-hopping stop, though: the sand is federal like every beach in Mexico, but the shore is fronted by resorts inside a gated development with a 24-hour security gate, and we could not verify a public street entrance. Treat it as a place to stay rather than a day trip. It is about 29 km (45 minutes) from the airport and 13 km (29 minutes) from downtown. Our Playa Mujeres guide covers the area in detail.

Where to stay nearby: Excellence Playa Mujeres, an adults-only all-inclusive about 220 m from the shoreline, is #1 by our weighted score here (9.6 across 787 reviews). Our reservation system lists it twice, so we take the score from the listing with the reviews and the rates from the bookable one; our Playa Mujeres guide compares every resort on the strip.

Sargassum: Which Cancún Beaches Get the Most and the Least

Sargassum exposure in Cancún follows the shape of the coast. The Hotel Zone is a barrier island shaped like a 7, and the seaweed rafts arrive on the open Caribbean from the east and south-east. The beaches on the long south strip, from Playa Marlín down to Playa Delfines, face that drift square on and take the most. The beaches north of Punta Cancún (Las Perlas, Langosta, Tortugas and Caracol) face the sheltered Bahía de Mujeres and take the least. Gaviota Azul and Chac Mool, on the corner at km 9.5 to 10, sit in between. So does Playa Mujeres, on the mainland north of downtown: it faces open water toward Isla Mujeres, which screens some of the drift but gives less shelter than the bay, and the resorts there clear their own beaches.

Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres is the most reliably clear beach in the area: it faces north and west at the end of the island, away from the main drift. That is why a ferry day to Isla Mujeres is the standard fallback in a heavy week, and our Isla Mujeres sargassum guide looks at that beach on its own.

ExposureBeachesWhy
Very lowPlaya Norte (Isla Mujeres)Faces north and west, away from the open-Caribbean drift
LowLas Perlas, Langosta, Tortugas, CaracolFace the sheltered Bahía de Mujeres north of Punta Cancún
ModerateGaviota Azul, Chac Mool, Playa MujeresOn the corner where the coast turns to the open sea; Playa Mujeres faces open water partly screened by Isla Mujeres

The season usually builds in spring, peaks around June to August and declines through autumn, although a heavy year can bring landings outside that window. Our Cancún sargassum season guide has the month-by-month pattern, and Cancún vs Playa del Carmen sargassum compares the two bases if you have not booked yet.

How to check today's conditions: the Quintana Roo state government's environment ministry (SEMA), working with the Mexican Navy, publishes a daily sargassum traffic light, the semáforo de sargazo, which colour-codes monitored beaches from low to very high presence. Find it under "Sargazo en el Estado de QRoo" on the SEMA website. The citizen-science Red de Monitoreo del Sargazo de Quintana Roo also posts regular beach-by-beach reports. Check both in the days before a beach day, because conditions change with the wind.

Playa Norte, the ferry leg: passenger ferries from Gran Puerto in Puerto Juárez take roughly 20 minutes to Isla Mujeres, and from the island's ferry terminal Playa Norte is a flat 0.9 km walk (about 11 minutes). Ferries also leave from the Hotel Zone piers at Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol, with fewer departures. Allow around 1 to 1.5 hours door to door from the Hotel Zone once you add waiting time.

By bus: the R-1 city buses run the length of Boulevard Kukulcán between downtown and the Hotel Zone, stopping near the public beach entrances, and are the cheapest way to beach-hop. Our guide to things to do in Cancún without a car covers getting around without a rental.

Best Time of Day and Year for Cancún's Beaches

For calm swimming, go in the morning. The bay-side beaches are usually at their flattest early, before the afternoon breeze picks up, and the small car parks at Langosta and Las Perlas still have space. Save Playa Delfines and the El Mirador lookout for late afternoon, when the light is softer for photos, and Playa Norte for sunset, which sets over the water toward Cancún.

  • December to April: the driest, most reliable beach months and the busiest. Sargassum is usually lowest early in this window.
  • May to August: hot, with the sargassum season building to its usual peak. This is when the bay-side beaches and Playa Norte earn their place.
  • September to November: September and October are the wettest months and the peak of hurricane season; sargassum eases through the autumn and the sand is quieter.

Our best time to visit Cancún guide has the month-by-month weather and prices.

Tips for Cancún's Public Beaches

  • Read the flags before you swim: lifeguards fly coloured flags, and on the open-Caribbean beaches (Gaviota Azul to Delfines) red-flag days are common. A red flag means stay out, whatever the water looks like from the sand.
  • Use the public entrances: beaches are federal land, so the sand in front of a resort is open to everyone, but resort loungers, towels and palapas are for guests. Bring your own shade to the beaches without free palapas.
  • Arrive early for parking: Playa Langosta's free car park holds only around 40 cars, while Playa Delfines has space for more than 300.
  • Swap beaches with the wind: if the south strip is rough or carrying sargassum, the bay-side beaches between km 2.5 and km 9 are a short bus ride away and are usually calmer.
  • Keep Isla Mujeres in reserve: a ferry to Playa Norte is the most dependable clean-water day in the area. Our things to do in Isla Mujeres guide covers the rest of the island.
  • Go out on the water for the reef: none of these beaches is a reef-snorkelling spot from the shore. For reefs and the underwater museum, a boat trip from our Cancún snorkeling tours guide is the way to go.

How We Selected These Beaches

Our team reviewed the public beaches of the Cancún Hotel Zone and the nearest island beach, Playa Norte, and kept ten that have a verified public entrance. We also include Playa Mujeres, the resort-fronted beach on the mainland north of downtown, as an eleventh beach for readers choosing a resort base, and we flag that we could not verify a public street entrance there. We compared them on what decides a beach day here: which way the beach faces, how calm the water is, sargassum exposure, facilities, crowds and drive time. Coordinates come from OpenStreetMap and Mapbox, and drive times from Mapbox driving directions. For hotels, we pulled every property our reservation system lists within 1,000 m of each beach (466 records, plus 56 within 1,000 m of the Playa Mujeres shoreline), removed condos, apartments, hostels and duplicates, and kept those scoring 8.0 or higher on at least 300 guest reviews with bookable rates on at least four of five sample dates. Thirty-three qualified around the first ten beaches and seven along Playa Mujeres. For Playa Mujeres we used the same five sample dates as our Playa Mujeres guide (November 19 to March 11), because availability there varies sharply through the high season, and where a resort has two listings we take the guest score from the listing with the reviews and count a date as bookable if either listing has a rate. We rank them by a weighted score that pulls small review counts toward the average, and name the top one per beach. Tours are the nine most-reviewed water and island trips from Cancún rated 4.5 or higher, each confirmed as currently running with recent reviews.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best beach in Cancún?+

It depends on what you want. For calm, shallow swimming, Playa Langosta at km 5 is the best beach in Cancún. For the classic wide open-Caribbean view, it is Playa Delfines at km 17.5, though its waves and currents are strong. For the least sargassum, take the ferry to Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres. For a quiet resort stay away from the Hotel Zone, look at Playa Mujeres, north of downtown.

Which beaches in Cancún have the calmest water?+

The beaches north of Punta Cancún: Playa Las Perlas, Playa Langosta, Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol. They face the sheltered Bahía de Mujeres rather than the open Caribbean, so the water is shallow and usually flat. Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres is just as calm. South of km 9, waves and currents grow.

Which Cancún beach has the least sargassum?+

Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres is the most reliably clear, because it faces north and west away from the open-Caribbean drift. In Cancún itself, the bay-side beaches from Las Perlas to Caracol take the least. Check the state's daily semáforo de sargazo on the SEMA website before you go. Our Cancún sargassum season guide has the monthly pattern.

Are the beaches in Cancún public?+

Yes. Beaches in Mexico are federal land, so the sand is open to everyone, including in front of resorts. What is not public is the resort's own loungers, towels and palapas, and the hotel grounds. Ten of the eleven beaches on this page have a public entrance from Boulevard Kukulcán or the street; Playa Mujeres is fronted by resorts inside a gated development, so in practice it suits resort guests.

Is Playa Delfines safe for swimming?+

It can be, but it is Cancún's roughest popular beach. Playa Delfines faces the open Caribbean with strong waves and currents. Swim only near a staffed lifeguard tower and follow the flags: on a red-flag day, stay out of the water. Families with small children usually do better at Playa Langosta or Playa Tortugas.

What is the best beach in Cancún for families?+

Playa Langosta. It has calm, shallow, sheltered water, restrooms, showers and lifeguards, at km 5 on the bay side. Playa Tortugas next door is similar but busier because of its ferry pier, and Playa Las Perlas at km 2.5 adds a playground.

How far is Playa Delfines from Cancún airport?+

About 14 km by road, roughly 16 minutes without traffic, which makes it the closest major beach to Cancún International Airport. The bay-side beaches at the north end of the Hotel Zone are 21 to 24 km and around half an hour away.

How do I get to Playa Norte from Cancún?+

Take a passenger ferry from Gran Puerto in Puerto Juárez (about 15 minutes' drive from downtown) or from the Hotel Zone piers at Playa Tortugas and Playa Caracol. The crossing takes roughly 20 minutes from Gran Puerto, and Playa Norte is a 0.9 km walk from the Isla Mujeres terminal.
