Playa Gaviota Azul is the free public beach at km 9.5 of the Cancún Hotel Zone, reached by an alley between Coco Bongo and Mandala Beach. Here is how to get on the sand, what the waves and sargassum are like, a map, and the six best hotels within 1 km, priced live.
What You Should Know
- Playa Gaviota Azul is a free public beach at km 9.5 of Boulevard Kukulcán, on the open-Caribbean side of Punta Cancún. The public way in is a short pedestrian alley between Coco Bongo and Mandala Beach, behind Plaza Forum.
- The surf is usually rolling waves, but it can range from calm to red flag. On October 2, 2026, Cancún's authorities flew red flags at eight beaches, Gaviota Azul among them, so read the flag before you swim.
- There are no showers on the sand. Local guides say beachgoers use the restrooms at Plaza Forum and buy water and snacks at the convenience store by the entrance.
- Few hotels sit directly on this stretch. Of the hotels that passed our review and availability floors, only Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach is within about a 6-minute walk; the rest of our six are 11 to 14 minutes away on foot.
Playa Gaviota Azul Cancún: The Short Answer
Playa Gaviota Azul is the open-sea public beach at km 9.5 of the Cancún Hotel Zone, right behind the Punta Cancún nightlife strip. It is where the coast turns from the calm bay to the open Caribbean, so you get wider water and real waves, a free public entrance between Coco Bongo and Mandala Beach, and the bars a couple of minutes' walk from your towel. It suits a swim, a walk and a beach afternoon before a night out, less so small children on a rough day.
This guide covers the Playa Gaviota Azul public access and how to find it, what the sand, waves and facilities are actually like, how exposed it is to sargassum, a map, and how far it is from the airport, downtown and the rest of the Hotel Zone. Because most people searching for this beach are choosing where to stay, the biggest section is the Playa Gaviota Azul Cancún hotels: the six best hotels within 1,000 m, ranked by verified guest reviews, priced live, and measured to the public access.
Gaviota Azul is one of several free beaches along Boulevard Kukulcán. Our guide to the best beaches in Cancún compares them all, and if you want calm water instead, Playa Caracol is on the bay side of the same point, a short walk away.

Playa Gaviota Azul Public Access: How to Find the Entrance
Mexican beaches are federal property, so the sand at Gaviota Azul is open to anyone, not only hotel guests. The hard part is getting to it, because the boulevard here is lined with clubs, bars and Plaza Forum rather than open beachfront.
The public access is a paved pedestrian alley off Boulevard Kukulcán at km 9.5, between Coco Bongo and Mandala Beach. It runs about 110 m from the street to the sand, a 1 to 2 minute walk, and comes out on the beach behind Plaza Forum. OpenStreetMap marks it as a public beach access, and local guides and travellers describe the same entrance. There is a convenience store by the entrance for water and sunscreen.
- On foot from Punta Cancún: the alley's street entrance is about 520 m, a 6-minute walk, from the Ultramar ferry terminal at Playa Caracol.
- By bus: Hotel Zone buses on routes R-1 and R-2 run along Boulevard Kukulcán. The nearest stop we mapped is about 170 m from the alley.
- By car: parking around Punta Cancún is limited, and local guides advise arriving before 11:00 a.m. in high season. A taxi or the bus is usually simpler.
Some maps label the sand directly behind Plaza Forum as Playa Forum. It is the same continuous open-sea beach, reached through the same alley.
The Playa Gaviota Azul Cancún map below plots the beach, the public access alley between Coco Bongo and Mandala Beach, Plaza Forum, the nearest Hotel Zone bus stop and the two neighbouring public beaches: Playa Caracol on the calm bay side of the point, and Playa Chac Mool about 760 m on foot to the south. The line shows the 630 m walk from the sand to the Ultramar ferry terminal at Playa Caracol. Pins 10 to 15 are the hotels ranked further down this page, numbered by our ranking.
What Playa Gaviota Azul Is Like: Waves, Swimming and Facilities
The Hotel Zone is shaped like a 7, and Punta Cancún is the corner. North of the point, beaches like Playa Caracol face the sheltered Bahía de Mujeres. Gaviota Azul sits just south of the tip, where the coast turns to face the open Caribbean, so the sea here behaves like the long south strip rather than the bay.
Waves and swimming
Travellers and local guides describe the surf as usually nice rolling waves that, depending on the weather, can range from calm to red flag. That makes it a good beach for a swim and a play in the waves on a calm day, and one to treat with care on a rough one. Red-flag days are not rare: on October 2, 2026, Cancún's authorities restricted swimming at eight beaches for high waves, Gaviota Azul among them. We do not report today's conditions on this page, so check the flag when you arrive.
- Green: normal conditions, swim with the usual care.
- Yellow: caution, waves or currents are stronger.
- Red: stay out of the water, whatever it looks like from the sand.
Do not count on a lifeguard being on duty. If you are with small children or weaker swimmers, Playa Caracol, on the bay side of the same point, is the calmer option. Gaviota Azul has no reef off the sand, so for coral and fish you need a boat trip.
Facilities
- Access: free and public, through the alley between Coco Bongo and Mandala Beach.
- Showers and restrooms: there are no showers on the sand. Local guides say beachgoers use the restrooms at Plaza Forum.
- Shade and loungers: do not count on free shade. Bring a towel and sun protection; walking vendors work the beach.
- Food and drink: a convenience store sits by the entrance, and Plaza Forum and the Punta Cancún strip have restaurants and bars a few steps away.
- Parking: limited around Punta Cancún; arrive before 11:00 a.m. in high season, or take the bus or a taxi.
Crowds
Gaviota Azul is lively rather than quiet. Locals use it on weekends, and it is very popular in March and April, when Spring Break fills the Punta Cancún bars and clubs. Early morning, roughly 8:00 to 10:00 a.m., is the calmest time on the sand.
Most Popular Tours
Punta Cancún Nightlife Next Door
The reason many people end up at Gaviota Azul is what sits behind it. The beach backs onto the Punta Cancún party zone, and Coco Bongo is about 200 m and a 2-minute walk from the sand. Mandala Beach is right beside the access alley, and Plaza Forum and the bars along the boulevard are within a few minutes' walk. That means you can spend the afternoon on the beach, shower at your hotel and be back on the strip without a taxi.
It also means noise and late nights if you stay right here. If you want to be close to both the beach and the clubs, the hotels within a short walk of the access suit you. If you want a calm night, the bay-side hotels further along the map are a quieter base. Our Cancún pub crawl guide covers the strip, and our best things to do in Cancún guide covers the rest.
Sargassum at Playa Gaviota Azul
Playa Gaviota Azul has moderate sargassum exposure. The seaweed drifts in on the open Caribbean from the east and south-east and lands hardest on the beaches of the long south strip, from Playa Marlín to Playa Delfines, which face that drift head-on. The beaches north of Punta Cancún, including Caracol, face the sheltered bay and get the least. Gaviota Azul and Playa Chac Mool, on the corner at km 9.5 to 10, sit in between: they face the open sea, but at the turn of the coast rather than square on to the drift. Our best beaches in Cancún guide rates every Hotel Zone beach on the same scale.
The season usually builds in spring, peaks around June to August and declines through autumn, although a heavy year can bring landings outside that window. November to March is usually the cleanest stretch. Our Cancún sargassum season guide has the month-by-month pattern. On a heavy day, the bay side of the point, at Playa Caracol, is a few minutes' walk away and is usually clearer.
How to check today's conditions
We do not report day-to-day conditions on this page. For the current picture, use the sargassum traffic light (semáforo de sargazo) published by the Quintana Roo government's environment department, under "Sargazo en el Estado de QRoo" on the SEMA Quintana Roo website, which colour-codes monitored stretches of coast from low to very high presence. The citizen-science Red de Monitoreo del Sargazo de Quintana Roo also posts regular beach reports. Check both in the days before a beach day, because conditions change with the wind. Our Cancún vs Playa del Carmen sargassum comparison explains how the two areas differ.
How to Get to Playa Gaviota Azul and Distances
Playa Gaviota Azul is on Boulevard Kukulcán, the single road through the Hotel Zone, at km 9.5. Head for Coco Bongo or Plaza Forum and walk down the public alley beside Mandala Beach. Hotel Zone buses on routes R-1 and R-2 run along the boulevard, and a taxi can drop you at the alley entrance.

Playa Gaviota Azul Cancún Hotels: Compare and Book
We ranked every hotel within 1,000 m of Playa Gaviota Azul that cleared our review and availability floors, which left eight; the six below are the top of that list, numbered as on the map. Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach is #1 by our weighted score at 9.4 across 2,678 reviews, and it is also the closest of the six, about a 6-minute walk to the public access. If you want the lowest nightly rate, Fiesta Americana Cancun Villas starts at $116 room only. If you want the cheapest all-inclusive, Dreams Sands starts at $263. The price basis differs between hotels, so check the board column before comparing.
One thing to know before you book: very little of the Gaviota Azul beachfront is hotel. The nearest lodging listings are condo and apartment buildings at km 9 to 9.5, which our hotel-only rule excludes. Most of the ranked hotels sit on the calm bay side of Punta Cancún, so their own beaches are bay water, and Gaviota Azul is a walk away. If walking to Gaviota Azul matters most, choose Grand Fiesta Americana; if a quieter, calmer beach at the hotel matters more, the bay-side hotels suit you better.

Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun
Rated 9.4/10 across 2,678 guest reviews, it is #1 by our weighted score and the closest of the six to Gaviota Azul, at km 9.5 about 345 m in a straight line and a 6-minute walk from the public access. Guests score its service a perfect 10.0 and its location 9.8. All-inclusive ran from $544 to $738 a night for two on the dates we checked. The complaints: aggressive vacation-club salespeople, repetitive menus, and extra charges for beach umbrellas. Choose it if you want the strongest guest record and to walk to both the open-sea beach and the clubs.

Rated 9.0/10 across 1,837 reviews, this adults-only all-inclusive sits at km 9.7, south of the point on the open-Caribbean side toward Playa Chac Mool, about an 11-minute walk from the Gaviota Azul access. It runs from $483 to $640 a night for two. Guests rate service 9.75 and room quality 9.25, the best room score of our six. Food and cleanliness are its weaker scores at 8.25, and guests mention inconsistent food and upselling pressure. Not an option for families.
Riu Palace Las Americas (Adults Only)
Rated 9.0/10 across 1,614 reviews, this adults-only all-inclusive at km 8.5 is on the bay side of the point, about an 11-minute walk from Gaviota Azul, from $324 to $495 a night for two all-inclusive. Its 9.4 for value is the best value score of our six, and staff score 9.9. Room quality is its weak point at 7.9, with guests mentioning dated fittings. It is all-inclusive on four of our five dates; on the fifth (November 19) only a breakfast-included rate came back, at a similar price.
Fiesta Americana Cancun Villas
Rated 9.0/10 across 897 reviews, it is the lowest starting rate here, room only from $116 to $151 a night for two, at km 8.5 about a 12-minute walk from the beach. Location scores a perfect 10.0. Guests praise the cleanliness and service. Food and drink prices draw the most criticism, and food scores 7.8. Choose it if you want a calm beach at the hotel and Gaviota Azul's waves as an outing.
Dreams Sands Cancun Resort & Spa
Rated 8.6/10 across 979 reviews, Dreams Sands is the lowest all-inclusive rate here, from $263 to $393 a night for two, at km 8.5 about a 12-minute walk from Gaviota Azul. Service scores 10.0 and guests like the organised activities. Food scores only 6.7, the lowest category score of the six, and some guests describe run-down facilities.
Just outside our six, Krystal Grand Cancun All Inclusive at the tip of Punta Cancún placed seventh by our weighted score (8.4 across 846 reviews). It is the second-closest hotel that passed our floors, about 410 m and a 7-minute walk from the access, all-inclusive from $318 a night for two, so it is worth a look if being close to Gaviota Azul outranks review scores for you. Best Time to Visit Playa Gaviota Azul, and Tips
For beach quality, November to April is the safest window: dry season, and outside the usual sargassum season. Our best time to visit Cancún guide covers weather, crowds and prices month by month. Within the day, 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. is the quietest time on the sand, before day visitors arrive and long before the strip wakes up. March and April bring Spring Break crowds.
- Read the flag first: Gaviota Azul faces the open sea and red-flag days happen. On a red flag, walk over to the bay side at Playa Caracol for a calmer swim.
- Use the alley: the public access is the pedestrian alley between Coco Bongo and Mandala Beach. You do not need to go through a club or hotel.
- Bring what you need: there are no showers on the sand and shade is not guaranteed, so pack a towel, water and reef-safe sunscreen. The convenience store by the entrance covers the basics.
- Go by bus or taxi: parking around Punta Cancún is limited, and R-1 and R-2 buses run along the boulevard.
- Check the semáforo in summer: exposure here is moderate, so between May and October look at the SEMA Quintana Roo sargassum traffic light before you go.
- Pair it with the ferry: the Ultramar terminal at Playa Caracol is a 7-minute walk away. Our things to do in Isla Mujeres guide covers the day out, and Playa Norte is the island's calm-water beach.
How We Researched This Guide
Most pages about Playa Gaviota Azul say it is "near Coco Bongo" and stop there. Our team reviewed local beach guides and recent news reports for the access, waves and facilities, mapped the beach from OpenStreetMap and Mapbox data, and ranked nearby hotels from verified guest reviews and live prices.
Access, map and distances
The public access alley, the beach, Plaza Forum, the bus stop and the neighbouring beaches come from OpenStreetMap; Coco Bongo comes from Mapbox place search. Drive and walking distances and times come from the Mapbox Directions API, without traffic. Facilities, waves and crowds are drawn from local beach guides and traveller reports, and the October 2, 2026 red flags from a local news report; we do not report day-to-day sea or sargassum conditions.
Hotels
We pulled every property our reservation system lists within 1,000 m in a straight line of Playa Gaviota Azul. We kept hotels and resorts with a guest score of 8.0 or higher on at least 300 verified reviews, removed apartments, condos and hostels, and required bookable rates on at least four of five sample check-in dates (two adults, three nights: November 19 and December 10, 2026, and January 14, February 11 and March 11, 2027). Eight hotels passed at 1,000 m, so we did not need to widen the radius. All six shown returned rates on all five dates.
Where our system lists the same property more than once, we merged the listings: the guest score and review count come from the listing with the reviews, the rates and booking link from the bookable listing, and a date counts as bookable if either listing has a rate. We applied this to Krystal Grand Cancun (three listings) and to Hotel Riu Cancun (two listings); even merged, Hotel Riu Cancun returned rates on only two of our five dates and did not pass. Le Blanc Spa Resort (9.6) sits about 1,004 m away, just outside our radius, and Turquoize at Hyatt Ziva Cancun (9.1) fell below the review floor with 217 reviews.
Weighted score = (reviews × guest score + 300 × 8.8) ÷ (reviews + 300)
Every hotel starts as if it already had 300 reviews at a baseline of 8.8, and its real reviews pull it away from that baseline. The ranking uses guest score and review count only; distance, board and price shape what we say about each hotel, not where it ranks.
| # | Hotel | Guest score | Reviews | Weighted score |
