Playa Caracol is the calm, free public beach at km 9 of the Cancún Hotel Zone, with its own Ultramar ferry pier to Isla Mujeres. Here is the ferry timetable and fare, a map, and the six best hotels within 1 km, priced live.

What You Should Know

  • Playa Caracol is a free public beach at km 9 of Boulevard Kukulcán, on the north shore of Punta Cancún. It faces the sheltered Bahía de Mujeres, so the water is calm and shallow rather than the open-Caribbean surf of the south Hotel Zone.
  • The Ultramar ferry to Isla Mujeres leaves from a pier on this beach seven times a day, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:15 p.m., for 290 MXN one way per adult plus a 36.56 MXN environmental fee (checked on Ultramar's own timetable on October 5, 2026).
  • Facilities are thin on the sand itself. Bathrooms and showers are limited and shade is not guaranteed, so bring a towel and plan to use the restaurants and beach clubs nearby.
  • The Punta Cancún nightlife zone, with Coco Bongo, is a 7-minute walk from the ferry terminal entrance. That makes the beach busy and central, and the hotels around it walkable to the bars.

Playa Caracol Cancún: The Short Answer

Playa Caracol is the calm-water public beach at km 9 of the Cancún Hotel Zone, on the north-facing side of Punta Cancún, and one of two Hotel Zone beaches, with Playa Tortugas, where the Ultramar ferry to Isla Mujeres leaves from the sand. If you want to swim without waves, catch the boat to the island without going downtown, and walk to Punta Cancún's bars afterwards, this is the beach that does all three.

This guide covers the Playa Caracol ferry (timetable, fare and crossing time, checked on Ultramar's own site), a map of the beach, the pier, the public access and the nearby beaches, what the sand and water are actually like, how exposed it is to sargassum, and how far it is from the airport, downtown and the rest of the Hotel Zone. It finishes with the six best hotels within 1,000 m of the sand, ranked by verified guest reviews and priced live, and the most-booked boat tours from this part of Cancún.

Playa Caracol is one of several free beaches along Boulevard Kukulcán. Our guide to the best beaches in Cancún compares them all, and our best hotels in the Cancún Hotel Zone guide explains why the north hook, where Caracol sits, is the calm side of the island.

Our Take

The 7:00 p.m. boat is the last one back to Playa Caracol. If you plan to stay on Isla Mujeres for sunset or dinner, book the return to Puerto Juárez instead, which runs far later, and take a taxi back to the Hotel Zone.

Playa Caracol Ferry to Isla Mujeres: Timetable and Fares

The Playa Caracol ferry is run by Ultramar from its terminal at km 9.5 of Boulevard Kukulcán, with boats leaving from a pier on the beach to the APIQROO maritime terminal on Avenida Rueda Medina in Isla Mujeres town. We checked the timetable and fares on Ultramar's booking site on October 5, 2026, for dates from October through early November 2026; the timetable was the same on every date we checked.

Fares

  • Adult: 290 MXN one way, 580 MXN round trip.
  • Child (1 year old up to 1.20 m tall): 220 MXN one way, 440 MXN round trip.
  • Infant (0 to 12 months): free, but still needs a boarding pass.
  • Environmental sanitation fee: 36.56 MXN, required by the municipal authority on top of the fare.

Ultramar lists the same 290 MXN adult fare from its Puerto Juárez and Playa Tortugas terminals. Tickets are non-refundable but valid for six months on any departure of the route you bought, and each ticket includes one piece of luggage up to 25 kg. Ultramar asks passengers to reach the terminal 30 minutes before departure.

Crossing time

Ultramar does not publish a crossing time for this route. Its own timetable gives a clue: the boat that leaves Playa Caracol at 9:00 a.m. is listed to leave Isla Mujeres again at 9:45 a.m., so the crossing is well under 45 minutes. Ferry booking sites list it at about 30 minutes. Our things to do in Isla Mujeres guide covers what to do once you land.

Playa Caracol or Puerto Juárez?

Playa Caracol is the convenient choice if you are staying around Punta Cancún: no taxi downtown, and the beach is next to the pier. Ultramar's other Hotel Zone terminal, at Playa Tortugas (km 6.5), also runs seven boats a day, from 9:15 a.m. The trade-off at both is frequency. Ultramar's Puerto Juárez terminal, about 14 km and 27 minutes by car from Playa Caracol, runs boats roughly every 30 minutes from 5:30 a.m., while Playa Caracol has seven departures and the first leaves at 9:00 a.m. If you want a full day on the island or an early start at Playa Norte, Puerto Juárez gives you more options; if you are happy to go mid-morning and back by 7:00 p.m., Playa Caracol saves the trip across town.

The Playa Caracol Cancún map below plots the beach, the parking off Boulevard Kukulcán, the Hotel Zone bus stop, the Ultramar terminal entrance at km 9.5 and the ferry pier on the sand. The line shows the 590 m walk from the terminal to the Punta Cancún nightlife zone around Coco Bongo. Two more public beaches are close by: Playa Gaviota Azul, just past the tip of Punta Cancún, and Playa Chac Mool, about 1 km on foot to the south. Both sit on the open-Caribbean side of the point, so expect more waves there than at Caracol. Pins 9 to 14 are the hotels ranked further down this page, numbered by our ranking.

What Playa Caracol Is Like: Sand, Water and Facilities

Playa Caracol is a short stretch of white sand on the north shore of Punta Cancún. The Hotel Zone is shaped like a 7, and the coast turns roughly 90 degrees at Punta Cancún around km 9. North of that turn the beaches face the Bahía de Mujeres, a sheltered bay between Cancún and Isla Mujeres, and that is what makes Caracol different from the long beaches of the south Hotel Zone.

The water

Local guides describe the water as calm, clear and shallow near the shore, with very gentle waves. That makes it one of the easier Hotel Zone beaches for children and weaker swimmers. It is a swimming beach rather than a snorkeling one: there is no reef off the sand, so for coral and fish you need a boat trip, covered in our top Cancún snorkeling tours guide. Even in calm water, watch children closely and respect any flags or roped-off areas, and keep clear of the ferry pier and the boat lanes around it.

Facilities

  • Access: free and public. Mexican beaches are federal property, so the sand is open to anyone, not only hotel guests.
  • Shade and loungers: palapas are not always available. Umbrella and lounger rental is offered on the beach, but bring your own towel and sun protection in case.
  • Bathrooms and showers: limited. Most visitors use the restaurants and plazas a few steps away.
  • Lifeguards: presence varies by season, so do not count on one being on duty.
  • Food and drink: restaurants, beach clubs and convenience stores are all within a short walk around Punta Cancún.
  • Parking: Ultramar says parking is available for ferry passengers, and there is surface parking off the boulevard, but it can fill in high season.

Crowds

Because it combines a ferry pier, a central location and free access, Playa Caracol is busier than its size suggests, with ferry passengers coming and going through the day. Mornings before the first boat at 9:00 a.m. are the quietest time on the sand.

Most Popular Tours

Sargassum at Playa Caracol

Playa Caracol has some of the lowest sargassum exposure in Cancún. The seaweed drifts in from the open Atlantic and Caribbean on the prevailing currents and winds, and lands hardest on the east-facing beaches of the south Hotel Zone. Caracol faces north into the Bahía de Mujeres, with Punta Cancún between it and the open sea, so it is naturally protected. Our Cancún sargassum season guide puts the north Hotel Zone, from Playa Caracol to Playa Tortugas, among the clearest stretches in Cancún.

Low exposure is not zero. In a heavy year some seaweed can still reach the bay, and local guides say it occasionally accumulates here with the currents. The season usually starts in April, builds through May and peaks from June to August, easing through September and October; November to March is usually clean.

How to check today's conditions

We do not report day-to-day conditions on this page. For the current picture, use the sargassum traffic light (semáforo de sargazo) published by the Quintana Roo government's environment department, SEMA Quintana Roo, which rates stretches of coast from green (scarce) through yellow and orange to red (very high), and the daily maps shared by the Red de Monitoreo del Sargazo de Quintana Roo on its social channels. Our Cancún vs Playa del Carmen sargassum comparison explains how the two areas differ.

How to Get to Playa Caracol and Distances

Playa Caracol is on Boulevard Kukulcán, the single road through the Hotel Zone, between km 9 and the Ultramar terminal at km 9.5. Ultramar's directions are simple: drive to km 9.5, where parking is available, or take a Hotel Zone bus to Playa Caracol. Hotel Zone buses stop on the boulevard by the beach.

Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach Cancun

Rated 9.4/10 across 2,678 guest reviews, it is #1 by our weighted score and sits at km 9.5, about 130 m from Playa Caracol and a short walk from both the ferry and the Punta Cancún bars. Guests score its service a perfect 10.0 and its location 9.8. It sells all-inclusive, breakfast and room-only rates, and all-inclusive was its cheapest board on the dates we checked, from $544 to $738 a night for two. The complaints: aggressive vacation-club salespeople, repetitive menus, and extra charges for beach umbrellas. Choose it if you want the strongest guest record and can live with the price.

Riu Palace Las Americas (Adults Only)

Rated 9.0/10 across 1,614 reviews, this adults-only all-inclusive at km 8.5 is the closest of the six to the sand, about 110 m from Playa Caracol, from $324 to $495 a night for two. Guests rate the staff 9.9 and the value 9.4. Room quality is its weak point at 7.9, with guests mentioning dated fittings. Not an option for families.

Fiesta Americana Cancun Villas

Rated 9.0/10 across 897 reviews, it is the lowest starting rate here, room only from $121 to $151 a night for two, about 230 m from the beach at km 8.5. Location scores a perfect 10.0. Guests describe large but dated rooms, and food is its weakest score at 7.6, which matters less if you eat out around Punta Cancún. Choose it if you want a cheap, walkable base for the beach and the ferry.

Presidente InterContinental Cancun Resort

Rated 8.8/10 across 3,447 reviews, the most of any hotel here, the Presidente sits at km 7.5, about 690 m west of Playa Caracol on its own calm beach, room only from $177 to $293. Guests praise the calm beach and the heated pool. Food and drink prices draw the most criticism, and food scores 7.8.

Dreams Sands Cancun Resort & Spa

Rated 8.6/10 across 979 reviews, Dreams Sands is the lowest all-inclusive rate here, from $263 to $393 a night for two, about 340 m from Playa Caracol at km 8.5. Service scores 10.0 and guests like the organised activities. Food scores only 6.7, the lowest category score of the six, and some guests describe run-down facilities and a small beach.

Krystal Grand Cancun All Inclusive

Rated 8.4/10 across 846 reviews, Krystal Grand sits at the tip of Punta Cancún, about 170 m from Playa Caracol, from $318 to $381 a night for two, all-inclusive. It returned rates on four of our five dates. Guests name individual staff members and rate service 10.0, but food scores 5.5 and value 7.0, with guests saying the better items cost extra. Several of its other category scores are identical (8.4), which suggests they mirror the overall score rather than being measured separately, so we have not quoted them.

Most Popular Boat Tours Near Playa Caracol

Playa Caracol sits on the bay that most of Cancún's boat trips cross, so the tours below are the ones that fit a day based here: Isla Mujeres catamarans, Isla Mujeres snorkel trips that start in the island's town (a ferry ride from Caracol), and the most-reviewed snorkel and speedboat trips in Cancún. All nine have a rating of at least 4.6 out of 5 and fresh reviews from the past month. Whale shark trips run only in season; the Isla Mujeres trip below takes bookings from mid-May to mid-September 2027. Best Time to Visit Playa Caracol, and Tips

For beach quality, November to April is the safest window: dry season, and outside the usual sargassum season. Our best time to visit Cancún guide covers weather, crowds and prices month by month. Within the day, early morning is quietest, before the first ferry at 9:00 a.m. and before day visitors arrive.

  • Pair the beach with the ferry: swim in the morning, take the 10:30 a.m. or 12:00 p.m. boat to Isla Mujeres, and come back on a later boat. The last one back to Playa Caracol leaves the island at 7:00 p.m.
  • Carry pesos for the ferry fee: the 36.56 MXN environmental fee is charged on top of the fare, so check how it is collected when you buy your ticket.
  • Bring your own shade: palapas are not guaranteed and bathrooms are limited, so pack a towel, water and reef-safe sunscreen.
  • Go by bus if you can: parking near the terminal can fill in high season, and the Hotel Zone buses stop by the beach.
  • Check the semáforo in summer: Caracol's exposure is low, but between May and October look at the SEMA Quintana Roo sargassum traffic light before you go.
  • Nightlife is next door: Coco Bongo and the Punta Cancún bars are a 7-minute walk away. Our Cancún pub crawl guide covers the strip, and our best things to do in Cancún guide covers the rest.

How We Researched This Guide

Most pages about Playa Caracol repeat a ferry timetable from a booking site and never say how far the beach is from anything. Our team reviewed Ultramar's own timetable and fares, mapped the beach from OpenStreetMap and Mapbox data, and ranked nearby hotels from verified guest reviews and live prices.

Ferry, map and distances

The ferry timetable and fares come from Ultramar's official booking site, checked on October 5, 2026, for several dates through early November 2026. Map positions come from OpenStreetMap (the beach outline, the ferry terminal, parking, bus stops and the neighbouring beaches) and Mapbox place search (the terminal entrance, Coco Bongo and the hotels' surroundings). Drive and walking times come from the Mapbox Directions API, without traffic. Facilities and water conditions are drawn from local beach guides; we do not report day-to-day sea or sargassum conditions.

Hotels

We pulled every property our reservation system lists within 1,000 m of the Playa Caracol shoreline, measured in a straight line. We kept hotels and resorts with a guest score of 8.0 or higher on at least 300 verified reviews, removed apartments, condos, hostels and duplicate listings of the same property, and required bookable rates on at least four of five sample check-in dates (two adults, three nights, from mid-November 2026 to mid-March 2027). Seven hotels passed. Hotel Riu Cancun cleared the score floor but returned rates on only two of our five dates, and Turquoize at Hyatt Ziva (9.1) fell below the review floor with 217 reviews. Beachscape Kin Ha Villas & Suites placed seventh and is not shown.

Weighted score = (reviews × guest score + 300 × 8.8) ÷ (reviews + 300)

Every hotel starts as if it already had 300 reviews at a baseline of 8.8, and its real reviews pull it away from that baseline. The ranking uses guest score and review count only; distance, board and price shape what we say about each hotel, not where it ranks.

Tours

The nine tours are the most-reviewed boat tours relevant to this part of Cancún: Isla Mujeres catamarans and snorkel trips, and Cancún's most-booked snorkel and speedboat tours. Every one is active, rated at least 4.6 out of 5, and has dozens of reviews from the past 12 months, the newest within the last month. We included one whale shark trip, the Isla Mujeres-based one, because it fits a ferry day from Playa Caracol.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the Isla Mujeres ferry leave from Playa Caracol?+

Yes. Ultramar runs a ferry to Isla Mujeres from its Playa Caracol terminal at km 9.5 of Boulevard Kukulcán, with seven departures a day at 9:00, 10:30 a.m., 12:00, 1:30, 3:00, 4:45 and 6:15 p.m. Boats back leave Isla Mujeres from 9:45 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. This is the timetable on Ultramar's site on October 5, 2026; it can change without notice.

How much is the Playa Caracol ferry to Isla Mujeres?+

290 MXN one way or 580 MXN round trip per adult, and 220 MXN or 440 MXN for a child up to 1.20 m tall, plus a 36.56 MXN environmental sanitation fee. Infants under 12 months travel free with a boarding pass. These are Ultramar's fares as checked on October 5, 2026.

How long is the ferry from Playa Caracol to Isla Mujeres?+

Ultramar does not publish a crossing time for this route, but its timetable has the 9:00 a.m. boat from Playa Caracol leaving Isla Mujeres again at 9:45 a.m., so the crossing is well under 45 minutes. Ferry booking sites list it at about 30 minutes. Arrive at the terminal 30 minutes before departure.

Where is Playa Caracol in Cancún?+

Playa Caracol is at km 9 to 9.5 of Boulevard Kukulcán, on the north-facing shore of Punta Cancún in the Hotel Zone. It is about 23 km and 34 minutes by car from Cancún airport, about 12 km and 23 minutes from downtown, and a 7-minute walk from the Punta Cancún nightlife zone around Coco Bongo.

Is Playa Caracol good for swimming?+

Yes. Playa Caracol faces the sheltered Bahía de Mujeres, so the water is calm, clear and shallow near the shore, which suits children and weaker swimmers. It has no reef, so it is better for swimming than snorkeling. Lifeguard presence varies by season, so watch children closely and keep away from the ferry pier.

Does Playa Caracol have sargassum?+

Its exposure is low. Playa Caracol faces north into the bay, protected by Punta Cancún, so it gets far less sargassum than the open-Caribbean beaches of the south Hotel Zone, though some can still arrive in a heavy year. The season usually peaks from June to August. For today's conditions, check the SEMA Quintana Roo sargassum traffic light.

What are the best hotels near Playa Caracol?+

Grand Fiesta Americana Coral Beach is #1 by our weighted score, 9.4/10 across 2,678 reviews, about 130 m from the beach, all-inclusive from $544 a night for two. Riu Palace Las Americas is the closest of our six to the sand and adults-only from $324, and Fiesta Americana Cancun Villas has the lowest starting rate, room only from $121.

Is Playa Caracol a public beach?+

Yes. Playa Caracol is a free public beach, open to anyone, not only hotel guests. Hotel Zone buses stop on Boulevard Kukulcán by the beach, and there is parking near the Ultramar terminal, though it can fill in high season. Bathrooms and showers are limited, so most visitors use nearby restaurants.
