Playa Mujeres is the gated resort beach on the mainland north of Cancún, facing Isla Mujeres. Here is what the water and sargassum are really like, how far it is from everything, a map, and an honest check of Excellence, Finest, Atelier, SLS, Dreams and the rest.
What You Should Know
- Playa Mujeres is a gated resort community on the mainland north of Cancún, not a town and not a public beach park. A 24-hour security gate admits hotel guests, residents and golfers, and no public transport runs inside, so in practice this beach is for people staying at its resorts.
- The shore faces Isla Mujeres across the bay, which keeps the water gentle on most days. Sargassum still arrives in summer: guests reported anything from no seaweed to seaweed everywhere in the same season, while winter visitors say it is not an issue.
- Seven of the 8 well-reviewed resorts within 2 km cleared our availability test. Excellence Playa Mujeres is #1 by our weighted score (9.6 on 787 reviews), adults only and all-inclusive from $728 a night for two; SLS and Dreams are not in our reservation system, so we could not rank them.
- It is a 43 to 48 minute drive from Cancún airport and about 35 to 40 minutes from Punta Cancún without traffic. Choose it for a quiet, all-inclusive stay, not for nightlife or walking out to restaurants.
Playa Mujeres Cancún: The Short Answer
Playa Mujeres is the stretch of beach and the gated resort zone on the mainland just north of Cancún, past Puerto Juárez and the Punta Sam ferry terminal, with Isla Mujeres about 6 km across the water. Officially it sits in the continental zone of the Isla Mujeres municipality, but everyone, from airlines to the resorts themselves, sells it as Playa Mujeres Cancún. It holds a row of large all-inclusive resorts, an 18-hole golf course designed by Greg Norman, and very little else.
This guide covers what the beach is actually like, who can get onto it, how exposed it is to sargassum, how far it is from the airport, downtown and the Hotel Zone, and a map of the resort strip. Then it does what most Playa Mujeres pages do not: it checks the resorts people search for by name, Excellence, Finest, Atelier, SLS, Dreams, Secrets and Beloved, against the same review and availability floors we use across this site, and says plainly which ones passed and which did not. It finishes with the most-booked boat trips from this end of Cancún: Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy and, in season, whale sharks.
If you are still choosing an area, our guide to the best beaches in Cancún compares every stretch of sand, and our Cancún all-inclusive resorts guide ranks resorts across the whole area, Playa Mujeres included.

Playa Mujeres Resorts: Compare and Book
We checked every hotel and resort our reservation system lists within 2 km of the Playa Mujeres shoreline. Eight cleared our review floor of 8.0 or higher on at least 300 reviews, and seven of those also returned bookable rates on at least four of our five sample dates. Those seven are ranked below and numbered as on the map. Excellence Playa Mujeres is #1 by our weighted score at 9.6 across 787 reviews, all-inclusive from $728 a night for two. If you want the lowest all-inclusive start, Villa del Palmar Cancun begins at $413 a night for two, and it is also the closest to the water. Three of the seven, Excellence, Atelier and Finest, appear twice in our reservation system; for those, the guest score comes from the listing that carries the reviews and the price and booking link from the listing that sells the all-inclusive rate, as explained under each resort below.

ℹ️ Guest scores, review counts and rates are drawn from our own hotel reservation system and were verified on October 5, 2026. Prices are each resort's cheapest all-inclusive rate for two adults, three nights, across five check-in dates from November 2026 to March 2027, before local taxes and fees. *Excellence Playa Mujeres returned an all-inclusive rate on 3 of the 5 dates and a breakfast-included rate ($803 a night) on one other date; the other six returned all-inclusive rates on all five. For Excellence, Atelier and Finest, the guest score comes from the listing that carries the reviews and the price from the bookable listing for the same resort. Distances are straight-line from each resort's listed location to the mapped shoreline, so the walk from your room may be shorter or longer. Prices change daily, always confirm at checkout.
Excellence Playa Mujeres
Rated 9.6/10 across 787 reviews, Excellence Playa Mujeres is #1 by our weighted score and the highest-rated resort in this part of Cancún in our system. It is adults only and all-inclusive, at the south end of the strip about 200 m from the water. Our reservation system lists it twice under the same name and address: one listing carries its reviews, the other sells its all-inclusive rates, so we take the score from the first and the price and booking link from the second. Between them, the resort was bookable on four of our five dates. All-inclusive rates came back on three, from $728 to $962 a night for two; on our November date the only rate was $803 a night with breakfast included, and nothing came back for March. Guests describe exceptional, personal service, often naming individual staff, and a beautiful beach and pools. Every one of its category scores is exactly 9.6, which suggests they mirror the overall score rather than being measured separately, so we do not quote them. On the beach, one February 2026 guest reported "some sargasso on the beach and in the water, but never severe or smelly", and a March 2026 guest said sargassum was "not an issue" in early March.
Atelier Playa Mujeres
Rated 9.4/10 across 1,019 reviews, Atelier Playa Mujeres is #2 by our weighted score, an adults-only all-inclusive in the middle of the strip with 9.6 for food and service. It also appears twice in our reservation system: the listing that carries its reviews returned a single room-only rate on our dates, $1,579 a night, which looks like a supplier issue rather than its real price, while a second listing for the same resort returned all-inclusive rates on all five dates, from $730 to $930 a night for two. We price and link that second listing. Guest complaints centre on membership sales pitches during the stay and the cost of golf, and its listed location is about 450 m from the water.
TRS Coral Hotel (Adults Only)
Rated 9.0/10 across 1,253 guest reviews, TRS Coral is #3 by our weighted score and the most-reviewed of the seven. It is adults only and sits at the north end of the strip, on the same Paseo Mujeres address as Grand Palladium Select, about 410 m from the water. Guests score its service 9.7 and its location 9.7, and they praise the staff, the beach and the grounds; one 2026 guest called it a "nice walkable beach" with a calm atmosphere. Cleanliness and food are its weakest scores, both 8.2, and extra charges come up in complaints. All-inclusive was its cheapest board on every date we checked, from $658 to $981 a night for two. Guests mention golf carts and boats for getting around the grounds, though one said they mostly walked.
Finest Playa Mujeres
Rated 9.0/10 across 360 reviews, Finest Playa Mujeres is #4 by our weighted score and the highest-ranked resort here that takes families. It belongs to the same Excellence Collection and sits next door to Excellence, about 220 m from the water, with a near-perfect 9.97 for location, but room quality is its weakest score at 7.9 and mosquitoes come up repeatedly in complaints. Like Excellence, it has two listings in our system: the one with its reviews returned only breakfast-included rates on our November and December dates, while the other returned all-inclusive rates on all five dates, from $759 to $923 a night for two, so that is the one we price and link. Guests in summer 2025 were split on the beach: some found "very little seaweed", others "lots of seaweed", and one said a tractor cleaned it every morning.
Grand Palladium Select Costa Mujeres
Rated 8.7/10 across 500 reviews, this is a family option at the north end of the strip, about 220 m from the water, all-inclusive from $463 to $689 a night for two. Its January to March rates ($484 to $519 on our dates) were the lowest of the seven. Guests rate cleanliness 9.2 and value 9.0, and praise the restaurants and spacious rooms. Service is its weakest score at 7.8, with complaints about concierge errors and slow check-in. The grounds are large: several guests describe waiting for golf carts or boats to get between buildings, especially at night, which matters with tired children.
Villa del Palmar Cancun Luxury Beach Resort & Spa
Rated 8.5/10 across 424 reviews, Villa del Palmar is the closest of the seven to the sand, about 60 m, and the lowest all-inclusive start, from $413 to $649 a night for two. It also sells room-only rates from $217. It sits at Punta Sam, at the south end of Playa Mujeres beside the Punta Sam ferry terminal. Guests score service and amenities 9.5 and like the pools and kids club, but food and value score only 6.5, with complaints about a compulsory tip and confusing resort credits. Several guests over 2025 and 2026 mentioned seaweed on its beach and a thin strip of sand, though others noted it was cleared daily.
Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Cancun
Rated 8.2/10 across 554 reviews, Garza Blanca is next door to Villa del Palmar at Punta Sam, about 260 m from the water, all-inclusive from $638 to $988 a night for two, or room only from $403. Guests rate cleanliness 9.5 and room quality 9.0, and single out the rooftop pool and the restaurants. Value scores 6.5 and amenities 7.5: guests mention tipping pressure, a disappointing kids club and limited English among some staff. One November 2025 guest described the sea in front as "swimmable but has quite a bit of seaweed and rocks when you enter".
Our Cancún adults-only all-inclusive guide and all-inclusive resorts guide rank resorts across all of Cancún, and our best beach resorts in Cancún page ranks the resorts closest to the waterline. That page uses a strict 150 m test, which left out most Playa Mujeres resorts: their listed locations sit roughly 200 to 500 m from the water, deeper in their grounds, even though guests reach the beach on foot. Villa del Palmar was the exception there too.

Not being ranked here is not a verdict on a stay. If one of these resorts is your first choice, price it on several dates and read its most recent reviews before you book; the seven ranked resorts above are the ones where we could verify both the guest score and the availability.
SLS, Dreams, Secrets and Others: Why They Are Not Ranked
These are the other Playa Mujeres resorts people search for by name. Each one failed at least one of our floors, or is not listed in our reservation system at all, so none appears in the ranking above. That says nothing about how good a stay is; it means we could not verify what the floors require. Here is exactly where each one stands.
| Resort | Guest Score | Bookable Dates (of 5) | Why It Is Not Ranked |
|---|---|---|---|
| SLS Playa Mujeres | — | — | Not listed in our reservation system |
| Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa | — | — | Not listed in our reservation system |
| Secrets Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa (adults only) | 7.9/10 (313 reviews) | 5, via a second listing | Below our 8.0 score floor |
| Majestic Elegance Costa Mujeres | 8.9/10 (2,770 reviews) | 2 | Missed our availability floor |
| Excellence Coral Playa Mujeres (adults only) | 9.2/10 (169 reviews) | 5 | Fewer than 300 reviews |
| Beloved Playa Mujeres (adults only) | No score shown | 3 | No guest score in our system |
ℹ️ Scores, review counts and availability from our hotel reservation system, checked on October 5, 2026, for the same five sample dates (two adults, three nights, November 2026 to March 2027) used for the ranking. Our floors: a guest score of 8.0 or higher on at least 300 reviews, and bookable rates on at least four of the five dates. Where a resort has two listings under the same name and address, a date counts as bookable if either listing had a rate.
SLS Playa Mujeres and Dreams Playa Mujeres
Neither resort appears in our hotel reservation system, so we have no verified guest score or live price for either and cannot rank them. SLS Playa Mujeres is at the Punta Sam end of the complex, and Dreams Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa Resort is at the north end beside Secrets Playa Mujeres; both are pinned on the map below so you can see where they sit.
Secrets, Majestic Elegance, Excellence Coral and Beloved
Secrets Playa Mujeres Golf & Spa has two listings in our system at the same address. The one that carries most of its reviews scores 7.9/10 across 313, below our floor, with complaints about service and food, and returned no rates on our dates; the second shows 8.8 but on only 106 reviews, and returned all-inclusive rates on all five dates from $476 a night. Under our rule the score comes from the listing that carries the reviews, so Secrets stays below the floor even though it was bookable. Majestic Elegance Costa Mujeres, about 1.8 km north of the strip, is 8.9/10 on 2,770 reviews but returned rates on only our November and December dates, and it has no second listing in our system. Excellence Coral Playa Mujeres, a third Excellence resort at the north end, scores 9.2 but on only 169 reviews. Beloved Playa Mujeres, an adults-only resort beside Excellence, has no guest score in our system, though it returned all-inclusive rates on three dates from $676 a night.
Most Popular Tours
The Playa Mujeres map below shows how the resort strip is laid out. Pin 1 marks the shoreline in front of the resorts, taken from the OpenStreetMap coastline because no beach outline is mapped here. Pin 2 is Boulevard Costa Mujeres, the road that continues Avenida Bonampak north into the complex, and pin 3 the Playa Mujeres Golf Club behind the beach. Pin 4 is the Punta Sam ferry terminal at the south end. Pins 5 to 11 are the seven ranked resorts in order, and pins 12 to 17 are the named resorts we could not rank, with the reason in each popup. The resorts at the Punta Sam end (Villa del Palmar, Garza Blanca, SLS) are the closest to Cancún, with Excellence and Finest just north of them; TRS Coral, Grand Palladium Select, Dreams and Secrets are at the far north end.
What the Beach at Playa Mujeres Is Like
The beach runs north from Punta Sam for about 3 km in front of the resorts. It faces east toward Isla Mujeres, which lies about 6 km offshore, so the island and the shallow bay between take much of the energy out of the open sea. That is the main difference from the long Hotel Zone beaches south of Punta Cancún, which face the open Caribbean.
The water
Local sources describe the surf as mild and the water as good for swimming and paddleboarding, and most guest reviews agree: "soft sand, soft currents", water that was "always swimmable and wadeable". It is not always flat. A November 2023 guest at Secrets reported "some pretty large waves", and one Excellence Coral guest noted a steep drop-off with very little wave noise. Expect calm, but check the flags at your resort and swim within marked areas.
The sand and the shore
The sand is fine and soft. The shore is not uniform: one guest at Garza Blanca, at the Punta Sam end, described rocks underfoot when entering the water, and Villa del Palmar guests mention a thin beach. Between Finest and Atelier, the beach fronts part of the golf course rather than a resort, and one Excellence guest who walked north noticed more seaweed there, presumably because no resort crew clears it.
Who can use it
Mexican beaches are federal land, so the sand itself is legally open to everyone. Getting to it is another matter. Playa Mujeres is a gated community with 24-hour security, and the gate admits hotel guests, residents, golfers and staff. There is no public transport into the complex, and we could not verify a signposted public access point along the resort strip. In practice, the beach is for people staying at, or holding a day pass for, one of its resorts. If you want a free public beach with calm water, Playa Caracol in the Hotel Zone or Playa Norte on Isla Mujeres are far easier.
Facilities and crowds
Everything on the beach belongs to the resorts: loungers, palapas, beach bars and lifeguards where provided. Because the complex is gated and the resorts are spread out, the sand is quiet compared with the Hotel Zone, and guests mention easily finding chairs. The trade-off is isolation: several guests say it is far from restaurants, shopping and nightlife, and that taxis into Cancún are expensive.
The golf course
Playa Mujeres Golf Club is an 18-hole, par-72 championship course designed by Greg Norman, set behind the resorts with nine holes beside the Chacmuchuch lagoon and nine through the dunes. Several resorts here market golf packages, and some guests complain that green fees are high even for resort guests, so check the rate before you book a golf-focused stay.
Sargassum at Playa Mujeres
Playa Mujeres has moderate sargassum exposure. Isla Mujeres and the bay give it some shelter from the open sea, and sargassum trackers and local guides generally rate it lighter than the south Hotel Zone and the Riviera Maya. But the strip is not closed off: the open water to the northeast, between the north tip of Isla Mujeres and the coast, still lets seaweed in during the season. Our Cancún sargassum season guide explains the regional pattern, and our Isla Mujeres sargassum guide covers the island across the water.
Guest reviews from 2025 and 2026 show how variable it is. In July to September, guests at the same resorts reported everything from "no seaweed and perfect sand" to "seaweed everywhere"; others said it changed day to day, or that their resort raked it every morning. Winter visitors at Excellence wrote that sargassum was light or "not an issue". The season usually starts in April, peaks from June to August and eases through September and October; November to March is usually clean. 2026 has been a heavy year across Quintana Roo, with the state reporting record volumes collected by early October.
How to check today's conditions
We do not report day-to-day conditions on this page. For the current picture, use the sargassum traffic light (semáforo de sargazo) published by Quintana Roo's environment department, SEMA Quintana Roo, which rates monitored stretches of coast from green (scarce) to red (very high), and the dated beach photos shared by the Red de Monitoreo del Sargazo de Quintana Roo. A report from the same morning beats any seasonal average, and your resort's front desk can tell you what its beach looks like today.

How Far Is Playa Mujeres from Cancún?
Playa Mujeres is reached by driving north from Cancún on Avenida Bonampak, which becomes Boulevard Costa Mujeres past Punta Sam. Because the resorts are spread along about 3 km, the drive depends on which end you are going to, so the table gives both: the south end (Excellence Playa Mujeres) and the north end (TRS Coral).

ℹ️ Driving distances and times calculated with Mapbox Directions on October 5, 2026. They are approximate drive times without traffic; allow more at rush hour and in high season. Villa del Palmar and Garza Blanca, at Punta Sam, are about 27 km and 39 minutes from the airport.
Guest reviews give similar figures: "about 45 minutes from the airport", "35 to 40 minutes north from Cancún airport". There is no public bus into the gated complex, so plan on a resort transfer, a private transfer or a taxi. Our Cancún airport transfer guide compares the options. For a day on Isla Mujeres, the Puerto Juárez terminal, about 20 minutes away, has the most frequent passenger ferries; our Playa Norte guide covers the crossing and the beach you land near.
Most Popular Tours from Playa Mujeres
Playa Mujeres sits closer to Isla Mujeres, Isla Contoy and the whale shark grounds than any part of the Hotel Zone, and several of the tours below leave from marinas on the Punta Sam road, a few minutes south of the resorts. These are the nine most-reviewed tours that fit a Playa Mujeres stay: Isla Mujeres sailing and snorkel trips, the Isla Contoy day trip, and whale shark tours. All nine are rated at least 4.5 out of 5 and have reviews from the past five weeks.
Whale shark tours run only in season: Isla Fun Tours says the experience happens from May to September, so outside those months those trips will show no dates. Two of the snorkel trips start in Isla Mujeres town, a ferry ride away. Most of the others include hotel pickup in Cancún, but Playa Mujeres is farther out than most pickup zones, so confirm pickup from your resort when you book. For more choice, see our guides to whale shark tours from Isla Mujeres, the Isla Contoy tour from Cancún and Isla Mujeres snorkeling.

Best Time to Visit Playa Mujeres, and Tips
For the beach, November to April is the safest window: dry season, and outside the usual sargassum months. Guests visiting in February and March describe warm, low-humidity weather and little or no seaweed. Summer brings whale sharks (roughly May to September) but also the sargassum season, so a summer stay is a trade-off. Our best time to visit Cancún guide covers weather, crowds and prices month by month.
- Price several dates: Excellence Playa Mujeres had no rate at all on our March date, and prices for the same resort swung by up to $350 a night between November and March.
- Pick your end of the strip: Villa del Palmar, Garza Blanca and SLS at Punta Sam are 5 to 10 minutes closer to Cancún; TRS Coral, Grand Palladium and Dreams at the north end are the most secluded.
- Pack for mosquitoes: guests at several resorts complain about mosquitoes, especially in the evenings.
- Budget for taxis: there is no public transport into the complex, and guests describe taxis into Cancún as expensive. Book your airport transfer in advance.
- Plan one boat day: Isla Mujeres and Isla Contoy are right across the water, and offshore trips are a good plan B if seaweed reaches your beach. Our things to do in Isla Mujeres guide covers the island.
- Check the semáforo in summer: from May to October, look at the SEMA Quintana Roo sargassum traffic light before you go, and ask your resort for a photo of its beach if it matters to you.
How We Researched This Guide
Most Playa Mujeres pages are resort sales pages that call the beach perfect and seaweed-free. Our team reviewed reservation-system data for every resort here, more than 4,000 guest reviews for what they say about the beach, OpenStreetMap and Mapbox map data, and the state's sargassum monitoring, and we say where a resort people search for did not meet our standards.
Map and distances
No beach outline is mapped at Playa Mujeres, so the beach pin uses the OpenStreetMap coastline in front of the resort strip. The road, the golf course and the Punta Sam ferry terminal also come from OpenStreetMap, and the positions of resorts that are not ranked come from Mapbox place search. Ranked resorts are pinned at the location listed in our reservation system (for a merged resort, the listing that carries its reviews). Drive times come from the Mapbox Directions API, without traffic. Access, golf and beach conditions come from local sources and guest reviews, which we quote.
Resorts
We pulled every property our reservation system lists within 2 km of the Playa Mujeres shoreline, from Punta Sam to the north end of the strip, measured in a straight line. We removed condos, apartments and hostels, kept hotels and resorts with a guest score of 8.0 or higher on at least 300 verified reviews (eight passed), and required bookable rates on at least four of five sample check-in dates (two adults, three nights, from mid-November 2026 to mid-March 2027). Seven passed both.
Some resorts appear in our reservation system twice, under the same name and address: one listing carries the guest reviews and the other sells the rates. We treat the two as one resort. The guest score and review count come from the listing that carries the reviews; the rates and the booking link come from the bookable listing; and a sample date counts as bookable if either listing had a rate that day, on any board. Three ranked resorts were merged this way: Excellence Playa Mujeres (bookable on 4 of 5 dates once merged, all-inclusive on 3), Atelier Playa Mujeres and Finest Playa Mujeres (both all-inclusive on all 5 through their second listing). Secrets Playa Mujeres also has a second listing at the same address; merging made it bookable, but its guest score from the listing that carries the reviews is 7.9, so it stays below the floor. We checked Majestic Elegance Costa Mujeres for a second listing and found none; Majestic Mirage next door is a different resort.
One listing for Riu Dunamar is placed inside our radius, but its address is the Costa Mujeres lot it shares with Riu Palace Costa Mujeres, about 4.5 km north, so we left it out. Haven Riviera Cancun and Breathless Cancun Soul, sometimes grouped with these resorts, are not in Playa Mujeres. We then ranked the seven by a weighted score:
Weighted score = (reviews × guest score + 300 × 8.8) ÷ (reviews + 300)
Every resort starts as if it already had 300 reviews at a baseline of 8.8, and its real reviews pull it away from that baseline. The ranking uses guest score and review count only; distance, board and price shape what we say about each resort, not where it ranks.
| # | Resort | Guest score | Reviews | Weighted score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Excellence Playa Mujeres | 9.6 | 787 | 9.38 |
| 2 | Atelier Playa Mujeres | 9.4 | 1,019 | 9.26 |
| 3 | TRS Coral Hotel | 9.0 | 1,253 | 8.96 |
| 4 | Finest Playa Mujeres | 9.0 | 360 | 8.91 |
| 5 | Grand Palladium Select Costa Mujeres | 8.7 | 500 | 8.74 |
| 6 | Villa del Palmar Cancun | 8.5 | 424 | 8.62 |
| 7 | Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Cancun | 8.2 | 554 | 8.41 |
Tours
The nine tours are the most-reviewed trips that fit a Playa Mujeres stay: Isla Mujeres sailing and snorkeling, the Isla Contoy day trip and whale shark tours from Cancún's north marinas. Every one is active, rated at least 4.5 out of 5, and has reviews from the past five weeks. We left out transfer-only products.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where is Playa Mujeres in Cancún?+
Playa Mujeres is on the mainland coast just north of Cancún, past Puerto Juárez and the Punta Sam ferry terminal, facing Isla Mujeres about 6 km across the water. It is officially part of the Isla Mujeres municipality's continental zone but is sold as Playa Mujeres Cancún. It is a gated resort community with a golf course, not a town.
Is Playa Mujeres a public beach?+
The sand is federal land, so legally anyone may use it, but Playa Mujeres is a gated community with 24-hour security that admits hotel guests, residents, golfers and staff. There is no public transport inside and we could not verify a public access point along the resort strip, so in practice the beach is for resort guests or day-pass holders.
Is Playa Mujeres good for swimming?+
Usually, yes. The beach faces Isla Mujeres, which shelters it from the open sea, so the water is generally gentle with soft sand, and guests describe it as swimmable. Waves can still pick up, some stretches have rocks underfoot, and seaweed can be heavy in summer, so check the flags and swim in marked areas.
Does Playa Mujeres have sargassum?+
It gets less than the open south Hotel Zone, but it does get sargassum in season. Guests in July to September 2025 reported anything from no seaweed to seaweed everywhere, often depending on the day and how well their resort cleared it, while winter visitors found it light. Check the SEMA Quintana Roo semáforo for current conditions.
How far is Playa Mujeres from Cancún airport?+
About 28.5 km and 43 minutes by car to Excellence Playa Mujeres at the south end of the strip, and 31.7 km and 48 minutes to TRS Coral at the north end, without traffic (Mapbox Directions, October 2026). Downtown Cancún is 27 to 33 minutes away and Punta Cancún 35 to 40 minutes. There is no public bus into the complex.
