Christmas in Playa del Carmen means warm, mostly dry days, free shows and an ice rink downtown, and hotel rates about double their mid-December level. We priced 36 hotels date by date and checked which of the top tours actually run on December 25.
What You Should Know
- Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday. December 25 and January 1 are federal rest days in Mexico, December 24 is not, and Mexico's school winter break runs from December 21, 2026 to January 5, 2027, so Mexican families arrive alongside visitors from the US and Canada.
- Playa's holiday price jump is steep. Across 24 well-rated hotels in town and Playacar, the median night for two was $102 for a stay from December 13, $198 from December 23 and $271 over New Year's Eve, and it was still $201 for a stay from January 3.
- Christmas Day is a closing day for many Playa-based tours. Of the 45 most-reviewed tours we checked, 23 could be booked for December 25, 2026, but 19 that run on ordinary Fridays were closed, including the Fifth Avenue food tour, the jungle buggy and ATV tours from Playa and the biggest Chichén Itzá tour.
- The weather is warm and usually dry. Christmas Day averaged a 28°C high at Playa's own weather station and 30°C at Cozumel airport across the channel, and a typical Christmas fortnight had only one wet day. A strong cold front can still bring a cool, windy day and cancelled boat trips.
Christmas in Playa del Carmen: The Honest Picture
⭐ Best Christmas window: arrive by Monday, December 21 and check in no later than Wednesday, December 23. In our sample, the median hotel night for two was $153 for a stay from the 21st and $198 from the 23rd, against $217 from Christmas Eve, $255 from December 27 and $271 over New Year's Eve, and you are in town for the free shows, the Fifth Avenue lights and Christmas Day itself.
| Factor | Our Christmas Score |
|---|---|
| Weather | 8/10: warm afternoons around 28 to 30°C; a norte can bring a cool, windy day |
| Rain (10 = none) | 9/10: about one wet day in a typical Christmas fortnight |
| Crowds | 3/10: Mexico's school break plus the busiest flight days of the year at Cancún airport |
| Prices | 2/10: the typical hotel about 1.7 times its mid-December rate, 2.3 times over New Year |
| Tours on Christmas Day | 5/10: 23 of 45 top tours bookable; many Playa-based tours closed |
| Beaches & Sargassum | 7/10: after a record 2026 season, sargassum is forecast to keep falling into December |
| Festive Atmosphere | 8/10: free shows, an ice rink and a parade on Fifth Avenue in 2025 |
| Families | 8/10: school holidays line up; Playacar has the family all-inclusives |
| Couples | 7/10: warm and lively, but busy and priced for peak |
💰 Christmas 2026 hotel prices in Playa del Carmen (median per night for two adults, in US dollars):
Mid-December (check in Sunday, December 13): ~$102 · Christmas (December 23 to 26): ~$198 · Check in on Christmas Eve: ~$217 · New Year's Eve (December 30 to January 2): ~$271
Each figure is the median of the cheapest rate on any meal plan at the same 24 hotels in central Playa del Carmen and Playacar, rated 8 or more from at least 500 reviews, for a three-night stay from that date, pulled November 4, 2026, before the taxes and fees added at checkout. All-inclusive resorts are counted at their cheapest rate. Individual hotels range far wider; see the tables below.
Planning Christmas in Playa del Carmen for 2026? Christmas Eve is Thursday, December 24 and Christmas Day is Friday, December 25. Playa del Carmen's own weather station recorded an average Christmas Day high of 28.0°C (82°F) in 9 years of readings from 1998 to 2012, and Cozumel airport, across the channel, averaged 29.7°C (85°F) on the 14 Christmas Days from 2010 to 2024 with a full record. That is beach weather on most days, though a cold front can knock a day back to the low 20s. The weather figures on this page are long-term records; the hotel prices, tour schedules and event dates are for Christmas 2026 specifically.
Christmas in Playa del Carmen is a peak-season trip. Mexico's schools break up on December 21, flights into Cancún airport hit their yearly high around the Saturday before Christmas, and in our sample the typical hotel's rate climbed from mid-December to New Year's Eve and stayed high into the first week of January. Christmas Eve (Nochebuena) is the main celebration in Mexico, with a late family dinner, and in 2025 the town put on free shows, an ice rink and a Christmas parade along Fifth Avenue.
In our view, Christmas in Playa del Carmen is worth it if you want a warm, walkable Christmas with a town to explore rather than a resort strip: book the hotel now, check in by the 23rd, and plan Christmas Day around the tours and places that actually open. If your dates can move, the first half of December has the same dry-season weather for about half the hotel price, and our Playa del Carmen in December guide covers that window.

Where to Stay for Christmas in Playa del Carmen
Book now if you have not already. On November 4, 31 of the 36 hotels we priced quoted a room for a stay from December 6, but only 26 for December 27 and 27 for New Year's Eve, and the rates that are left are the higher ones. Check in by December 23 if you can: hotel by hotel, a stay from the 24th cost a median 13% more than one from the 23rd.
Playa splits into three areas. Central Playa, around Fifth Avenue (Quinta Avenida), puts you within walking distance of the Christmas program, restaurants and the ferry pier, and is where most of the boutique and condo hotels are. Playacar, the gated resort area south of the ferry pier, holds most of the big all-inclusives. North of the centre, around Coco Beach, is quieter but still walkable to Fifth Avenue. The town is 50 to 60 minutes from Cancún airport by road. Our Playa del Carmen hotels guide compares more places to stay, and the grid below prices our seven town picks live for Christmas.
Playa del Carmen All-Inclusives for Christmas: Which to Book
Each rate is the cheapest all-inclusive price per night for two adults, for a three-night stay from December 23, pulled November 4, 2026, before the taxes and fees added at checkout. Guest scores are out of 10, from our hotel partner's reviews; facilities are from the resorts' own listings.
| Best for | Resort | Christmas rate | vs. its Dec 13 rate | Guest score |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cheapest for families | Riu Lupita, Playacar, with a kids' club and kids' pool | $291 | +63% | 8.1 (874 reviews) |
| Families in town | The Reef Coco Beach, optional all-inclusive, with a kids' club | $326 | +86% | 8.0 (1,565 reviews) |
| Best value adults-only | Hyatt Vivid | $364 | +17% | 8.5 (750 reviews) |
| Most for kids | Allegro Playacar, with a kids' club, kids' pool and playground | $387 | +136% | 8.1 (868 reviews) |
| Best luxury (adults only) | Devossion by Live Aqua | $684 | +66% | 9.6 (551 reviews) |
| Best luxury for families | Playacar Palace | $838 | +85% | 9.4 (460 reviews) |
Hyatt Vivid barely moved for Christmas, so it was cheaper than Wyndham Alltra ($407), its adults-only neighbour on Avenida Constituyentes, even though Wyndham Alltra was $178 against Hyatt Vivid's $310 in mid-December. Allegro Playacar charges a supplement at reception for children aged 2 to 12. Playacar Palace returned no all-inclusive rate for any check-in after December 23, and The Reef Coco Beach none from December 27, so book them early if you want them.

Compare and Book Tours That Run on Christmas Day
These six tours could all be booked for Friday, December 25, 2026 when we checked, which matters because many of the best-known tours from Playa close that day. Our Christmas pick is Grupo Xcaret's Xenotes tour: it runs on every holiday date at the same price, it is a land day that a cold front will not cancel, and all three of its Viator reviews posted over last year's holidays gave it 5 stars. Our Playa del Carmen cenote tour guide compares it with the other cenote trips.
Playa del Carmen Weather at Christmas: Temperature, Rain and Nortes
We read the daily records rather than the monthly averages, because a Christmas trip only cares about one fortnight. Playa del Carmen has its own Servicio Meteorológico Nacional station, whose daily records for 1998 to 2012 are archived by NOAA. Its record is short and patchy, so we checked it against the longer Tulum station record (1964 to 2012) and against NOAA's daily summaries for Cozumel airport (station 76644) for recent years.
| Measure | December 20 to January 1 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Average high | 28.1°C (83°F) | Playa del Carmen station, 1998–2012 |
| Average low | 18.1°C (65°F) | Playa del Carmen station, 1998–2012 |
| Christmas Day high | 28.0°C (82°F) on average; 21.7 to 31.7°C (71 to 89°F) over 9 years | Playa del Carmen station, 1998–2012 |
| Christmas Day high, longer record | 29.5°C (85°F) on average over 38 years | Tulum station, 1964–2012 |
| Christmas Day high, recent years | 29.7°C (85°F) on average; 21.4°C (71°F) in 2022 to 34.0°C (93°F) in 2015 | Cozumel airport, 2010–2024 (14 years) |
| Days with 1 mm of rain or more | A median of 1 in the fortnight, from none to 5; about 1 day in 8 | Playa del Carmen station, the 9 years with every day recorded |
| Days with 1 mm of rain or more, longer record | A median of 1 in the fortnight; about 1 day in 6 | Tulum station, the 32 years with every day recorded |
| Rain on Christmas Day | 2 of 12 Christmases, neither above 4 mm | Playa del Carmen station, 1998–2012 |
| Sea temperature | 27.6 to 28.2°C (82 to 83°F) on average, December 20 to 31 | NOAA buoy 42056, open Caribbean, 2019–2025 |
| Sunrise and sunset, December 25 | About 7:21 am and 6:14 pm | Our calculation for Playa del Carmen (UTC−5) |
Why the sources differ: the Playa station has Christmas Day highs for only 9 years, so one cool or hot day moves its average a lot; Tulum, 60 km south, has 38 years, and Cozumel airport covers the most recent Christmases. All three put a typical Christmas Day high between 28 and 30°C. We left out one Playa reading of 38.9°C on December 25, 1998, which sits between readings of 28.9°C on the days either side and is almost certainly a recording error.
What it feels like: warm, sunny afternoons around 28°C and cooler evenings, with less humidity than in summer. Pack a light layer for dinners outdoors and for the days after a front.
Nortes: the main weather risk at Christmas is a norte, a cold front from the north that brings one to three days of strong wind, rough sea and a sharp drop in temperature. Christmas Day 2022 reached only 21.4°C at Cozumel airport. Mexico's water authority forecasts 56 cold fronts for the 2026–2027 season, above the 1990–2020 average of 50, with 9 in December, the most of any month. Not every front reaches the Riviera Maya with force, but plan on at least one breezy, cooler spell during a Christmas week, and expect boat trips and the Cozumel ferry to be the first things affected.
Swimming: the sea stays warm enough to swim without a wetsuit. The nearest long-running NOAA buoy, station 42056, averaged 27.6 to 28.2°C over December 20 to 31 in 2019 to 2025; it sits far out in the Caribbean, so the water at the beach is likely a little cooler, especially after a norte.
Sargassum: 2026 was a record year for sargassum on the Riviera Maya's beaches. The University of South Florida's October 31, 2026 outlook found amounts fell by more than half in October and expects them to keep falling until about the end of November or December, with some much smaller landings in the Caribbean still likely. Our Playa del Carmen sargassum guide links to live beach reports to check before you go.
Crowds and Hotel Prices Over Christmas, Date by Date
How to read the prices: every figure is in US dollars, per night, for two adults in one room, for a three-night stay from the check-in date shown, pulled on November 4, 2026, before the taxes and fees added at checkout. They are sample rates, not quotes.
| Check-in (3 nights) | Median per night | vs. December 13 | Hotels with a rate (of 36 priced) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunday, December 6 | $104 | +2% | 31 |
| Sunday, December 13 | $102 | lowest | 30 |
| Friday, December 18 | $121 | +19% | 31 |
| Monday, December 21 | $153 | +51% | 30 |
| Wednesday, December 23 (Christmas) | $198 | +95% | 29 |
| Thursday, December 24 | $217 | +114% | 28 |
| Sunday, December 27 | $255 | +151% | 26 |
| Wednesday, December 30 (New Year's Eve) | $271 | +167% | 27 |
| Sunday, January 3, 2027 | $201 | +98% | 29 |
| Sunday, January 10, 2027 | $152 | +49% | 30 |
The medians are for the 24 hotels that quoted on all ten dates (3 three-star, 16 four-star and 5 five-star), so each row compares the same hotels. Hotel by hotel, the Christmas stay cost a median 1.7 times the same hotel's December 13 rate, and New Year's Eve 2.3 times. Unlike in Cancún, where we found rates easing by January 3, Playa's prices were still about double the mid-December level for a stay from January 3 and had not fully settled by January 10. Our Christmas in Cancún guide has the same comparison for the Hotel Zone.
All-inclusive resorts over Christmas
The cheapest all-inclusive rate for two, per night, for three-night stays, in US dollars. "No rate" means the resort returned no all-inclusive price for that stay. Riu Palace Riviera Maya returned no rate on any of our dates.

|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Riu Lupita | $178 | $291 | $342 | No rate | $242 |
| The Reef Coco Beach | $175 | $326 | No rate | No rate | $274 |

| Allegro Playacar | $164 | $387 | $379 | $443 | $247 |
| Wyndham Alltra (adults only) | $178 | $407 | $509 | $509 | $215 |
| Riu Yucatan | $262 | $443 | $502 | No rate | $325 |
| Riu Playacar | $281 | $476 | $559 | No rate | $341 |
| Riu Palace Mexico (adults only) | No rate | $489 | $587 | No rate | $464 |
| Devossion by Live Aqua (adults only) | $412 | $684 | $608 | $613 | $498 |
| Playacar Palace | $453 | $838 | No rate | No rate | $575 |
Most all-inclusives cost one and a half to two times their mid-December rate for Christmas. The exception was Hyatt Vivid, 17% above its mid-December rate, while Allegro Playacar and Wyndham Alltra more than doubled.
How busy it gets
Mexico's Secretaría de Educación Pública confirms the 2026–2027 winter break runs from December 21, 2026 to January 5, 2027, so Mexican families arrive alongside the North American holiday crowd. Most visitors fly into Cancún airport, which handled 2,716,484 passengers in December 2025, according to its operator ASUR, and Saturday, December 20, 2025, with 686 scheduled flights, was the airport's busiest day of the year, as reported by El Congresista. Expected, based on last year: Saturday, December 19, 2026 will be one of the busiest days at the airport, so allow extra time for the drive to Playa.
The ruins fill up too. Chichén Itzá had 18,663 visitors on Sunday, December 28, 2025, as reported by Por Esto, so go before Christmas or early in the morning.
How Much Does Christmas in Playa del Carmen Cost in 2026?
All prices are in US dollars, from our November 4, 2026 checks, for Christmas 2026 dates.
| Expense | Christmas 2026 price |
|---|---|
| Hotel, median of 24 hotels, check in December 23 | $198 a night for two ($594 for three nights) |
| All-inclusive resort, check in December 23 | $291 (Riu Lupita) to $838 (Playacar Palace) a night for two |
| Private transfer from Cancún airport | $121 one way for two people, booked for December 23 |
| Xenotes cenote tour | $159 per person |
| Chichén Itzá, cenote and Valladolid day trip (Amigo Tours) | $39 to $59 per person on December 24 to 26, cheapest option; check whether the entrance fees are included |
| Maroma catamaran with snorkelling and beach club | $85 per person, plus a $15 marina fee in cash |
| Christmas shows at Plaza 28 de Julio | Free in 2025 |
Example: a couple, three all-inclusive nights at Riu Lupita from December 23. The resort costs $291 a night, or $873. Add private airport transfers both ways ($242, if the return costs the same $121 we found for the arrival) and the Xenotes tour for two ($318). That comes to about $1,433 before flights, tips and the taxes and fees added at hotel checkout. The same trip at the median town hotel ($198 a night, meals not included) would be about $1,154 before you eat.
What's Open in Playa del Carmen on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day
December 25 and January 1 are mandatory rest days under Mexico's federal labour law, as the government's labour advocate, PROFEDET, lists, so banks and government offices close; December 24 and December 12 are not.
We checked each of the 45 most-reviewed tours on Viator's Playa del Carmen listings, rated 4.5 or more and leaving out whale shark tours, for availability on the holiday dates, and against two ordinary Fridays, December 11 and 18, so a tour that simply does not run on Fridays is not counted as closed. Twenty-three could be booked for Christmas Day, 19 were closed, and 3 were unclear. New Year's Day looked much the same. Many of these tours also pick up in Cancún. Prices are per person, for two adults.

A tour shown as bookable can still sell out, and operators can change their holiday schedules, so book Christmas Day plans early and check your confirmation. Rancho Bonanza's Viator calendar showed no dates after December 31 when we checked, so New Year's Day may simply not be loaded yet.
The ruins, the parks and the ferry
- Chichén Itzá, Tulum and Cobá: INAH, which runs the sites, lists them as open Monday to Sunday (Tulum 8 am to 5 pm, last entry 3:30 pm) but publishes no holiday hours. Some Chichén Itzá and Tulum tours sell December 25 and January 1, but we found no official confirmation for the holidays themselves, so ask your operator.
- Xcaret: the park, about 6 km south of Playa, says in its official FAQ that it opens every day from 8:30 am to 10 pm, holidays included.
- Cozumel ferry: the crossing takes 35 to 45 minutes, with adult fares from about $16 one way as of October 2026; see our Playa del Carmen to Cozumel ferry guide. We found no published Christmas Day or New Year's Day timetable, and a strong norte can stop the crossings, so check with the operator the day before.
- Church services: we found no published Christmas mass times for Playa del Carmen; ask your hotel closer to the date.
How Playa del Carmen Celebrates Christmas: Fifth Avenue, Posadas and Playa Fest
Playa del Carmen's council runs a Christmas program each year, which it called Navidad Mágica (Magical Christmas) in 2025. Most of it happens in the centre, at Plaza 28 de Julio and along Fifth Avenue, so it is easy to reach from the hotels in town.
| Event | 2026 date | What happens |
|---|---|---|

Christmas Eve in Playa del Carmen
Christmas Eve dinner is the big night. Most all-inclusives and many restaurants on and around Fifth Avenue put on a special dinner, and some resorts charge extra for it or for the New Year's Eve gala. Ask your hotel what is included before you book, and reserve a restaurant table well ahead if you are staying in town.
Playa del Carmen Christmas Activities: The Best Things to Do, Ranked
Ranked for a Christmas trip: how well each one suits the weather and the crowds, and whether it runs on the holiday itself.
| # | Activity | Open on Dec 25? | Price on our check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Xenotes cenote tour | Yes | $159 |
| 2 | Chichén Itzá day trip | Some tours | $29 to $59 |
| 3 | The Christmas program on Fifth Avenue and Plaza 28 de Julio | Expected | Free in 2025 |
| 4 | Xcaret | Yes, daily | Not checked |
| 5 | Tulum ruins | Some tours | $59 to $121 |
| 6 | Catamaran, snorkel and beach club at Maroma | Yes | $85 + $15 fee |
| 7 | Cozumel by ferry | Ask the operator | From about $16 one way |
| 8 | Horseback riding and a cenote | Yes | $120 |
| 9 | Fifth Avenue food tour | No; book another day | $78 |
| 10 | A private yacht | Yes | $1,170 per boat |
1. Swim, Kayak and Zipline at Four Cenotes
Our Christmas pick runs every holiday date at the same $159, picks up from Playa hotels and spends the day at four cenotes, with swimming, kayaking and a zipline. Cenotes are sheltered from the wind, so it is the plan least likely to be spoiled by a norte. Our cenote tour guide compares the cheaper half-day options too.
2. See Chichén Itzá Before the Holiday Rush
Christmas weather is ideal for the long day at Chichén Itzá, but the site gets crowded from Christmas to New Year. Go on December 21 to 23 if you can. The most-reviewed tours, including the one that leaves from Playa with a Mayan cuisine stop, were closed on Christmas Day; Amigo Tours' trip was bookable on the 25th at $59, and its 95 Viator reviews posted over last year's holidays averaged 4.45. Our Chichén Itzá tours from Playa guide compares the options and the entrance fees.
3. Catch the Free Christmas Shows and the Fifth Avenue Parade
In 2025 the town ran free shows at Plaza 28 de Julio from December 5 to 28, opened an ice rink on December 12 and held a Christmas parade along Fifth Avenue the weekend before Christmas. The 2026 program was not announced when we checked; expect something similar, and check the council's announcements in early December.
4. Spend Christmas Day at Xcaret
Xcaret is about 6 km south of Playa and says it opens every day, holidays included, which makes it one of the surest options for December 25 itself.
5. Visit Tulum on a Tour That Runs
Tulum is an hour south, and the ruins are comfortable in December. Amigo Tours' Tulum and Cobá trip was bookable on every holiday date at $59, but the full-day Tulum, cenote and sea turtle tour we recommend in December was closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day. Our Tulum tours from Playa guide covers the rest.
6. Sail to Maroma for Snorkelling and a Beach Club
The Maroma catamaran runs on every holiday date for $85, plus a $15 marina fee in cash; it was $135 from January 1. Recent Viator reviews were mixed about space on board, with one guest calling it the smallest catamaran they had been on. Book it early in your stay in case a norte cancels it. See our Playa del Carmen catamaran guide.
7. Cross to Cozumel
The ferry leaves from the pier next to Parque Fundadores and takes 35 to 45 minutes. It is a good calm-day trip, but it is the first thing a norte stops, and we found no published holiday timetable. Our ferry guide has fares and terminals.
8. Ride to a Cenote on Horseback
Rancho Bonanza's horseback and cenote ride, rated 4.9 from 2,005 reviews, was bookable on December 24, 25 and 31 at $120. See our horseback riding guide.
9. Eat Your Way Down Fifth Avenue
The Playa del Carmen walking food tour we checked was closed on Christmas Day and New Year's Day but ran on the other holiday dates, so book it for December 23, 24 or 26.
10. Charter a Private Yacht
The 47 ft Azimut yacht we checked cost $1,170 for a three-hour charter on December 23, and the same on Christmas Day, New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. Our Playa del Carmen boat tours guide compares the shared options.

A Playa del Carmen Christmas Itinerary: December 20 to 27, 2026
This week-long plan puts the busy day trips before Christmas, keeps Christmas Day for things that actually run on the 25th, and gets you home before the New Year's Eve rates. Prices are from our November 4, 2026 checks, per person; the opening information is from the tables above.
| Date | Plan | Why this day | Price on our check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunday, December 20 | Arrive, transfer to Playa, evening on Fifth Avenue | Avoids Saturday the 19th, expected to be one of Cancún airport's busiest days | Private transfer $121 one way for two |
| Monday, December 21 | Chichén Itzá, cenote and Valladolid day trip | Before the Christmas-to-New-Year crowds at the ruins | $29 to $59 |
| Tuesday, December 22 | Catamaran, snorkel and beach club at Maroma, or Cozumel by ferry | A boat day early in the trip leaves spare days if a norte cancels it | $85 + $15 marina fee |
| Wednesday, December 23 | Walking food tour; the Christmas shows at Plaza 28 de Julio in the evening | The food tour is closed on the 25th | $78; shows free in 2025 |
| Thursday, December 24 | Slow beach day; Christmas Eve dinner | Nochebuena is Mexico's main Christmas celebration | Ask whether your resort's dinner costs extra |
| Friday, December 25 | Xenotes cenote tour, or a full day at Xcaret | Both run on Christmas Day; many Playa-based tours do not | Xenotes $159 |
| Saturday, December 26 | Tulum ruins, or a boat trip moved from a windy day | Your spare day for anything a norte cancelled | Tulum tours $59 to $121 |
| Sunday, December 27 | Fly home | The median hotel night was $255 for stays from the 27th, and $271 over New Year's Eve | — |
If a norte arrives: swap the boat day for Chichén Itzá, Tulum or the cenotes, and move the catamaran or Cozumel to the calm day after the front passes. Tour prices for December 21 to 23 were not part of our check; the figures shown are the prices we found on the holiday dates.
Staying for New Year's Eve instead? Keep the same order and add the extra days at the end, but book the hotel now: on November 4, only 27 of the 36 hotels we priced had any room for a December 30 check-in, and rates stayed high for stays from January 3.
Closed Tours, Windy Days and January Prices: What to Watch Out For
- Most Playa-based tours close on Christmas Day. The walking food tour, the jungle buggy and ATV tours from Playa, the half-day turtle snorkel and the full-day Tulum and turtles tour were all bookable on December 24 and 31 but closed on December 25 and January 1. Plan those for other days.
- A norte can change boat trips. On the Riviera Maya luxury snorkel cruise, an October 2026 Viator reviewer wrote that "the water was too rough to snorkle at the reef", and the crew moved to a second spot. Book boat trips early in your stay and keep a land day for the windy ones.
- Isla Mujeres sailings struggled last Christmas. The luxury sailing to Isla Mujeres from Puerto Morelos averaged 4.6 stars overall, but its 12 Viator reviews posted from December 22, 2025 to January 12, 2026 averaged 3.5, with 4 at one or two stars.
- Prices stay high into January. In our sample, a stay from January 3 was still a median $201 a night, about double mid-December, and $152 from January 10.
- The cheaper Christmas rooms are going. On November 4, 4 fewer of the hotels we priced quoted a room for New Year's Eve than for early December, and 6 of the 11 all-inclusives we priced returned no all-inclusive rate for a December 30 check-in.
- Not everything is included. Hotel rates on this page exclude the taxes and fees added at checkout, boat tours add marina fees in cash, and some all-inclusives charge extra for the Christmas Eve dinner or New Year's Eve gala.
Our Take
Two things surprised us in Playa: how many of the town's own tours close on Christmas Day, and how long the holiday prices last, with hotel rates still about double the mid-December level for a stay from January 3. Plan the 25th around a tour that runs or Xcaret, and if your dates are flexible, leave before New Year rather than after it.
Tips for Christmas in Playa del Carmen
- Check in by December 23. Hotel by hotel, a stay from the 24th cost a median 13% more than one from the 23rd, and the median kept rising to $271 over New Year's Eve.
- Book Christmas Day plans first. Nineteen of the 45 top tours we checked were closed on December 25; Xenotes, Xcaret, Amigo Tours' Chichén Itzá and Tulum trips and the Maroma catamaran were open.
- Do Chichén Itzá before Christmas. The site had 18,663 visitors on December 28 last year; December 21 to 23 should be calmer.
- Allow extra time for the airport on the Saturdays either side of Christmas, December 19 and 26, 2026, and book your transfer from Cancún airport when you book your flights.
- Ask about the Christmas Eve dinner and New Year's Eve gala when you book an all-inclusive: whether they are included, and whether you need a reservation.
- Pack a light layer. Evenings in the Christmas fortnight averaged about 18°C at Playa's station, and a norte can bring a 21°C day.
- Spending Christmas elsewhere on the coast? Our Christmas in Cancún guide, Christmas in Tulum guide and Christmas in Cozumel guide use the same date-by-date hotel prices and Christmas Day tour checks.
- Visiting at a different time of year? Our Playa del Carmen in December guide covers the quieter, cheaper first half of the month, our Playa del Carmen in January guide covers the dry season after the holidays, and our guide to the best time to visit Playa del Carmen compares the whole year.
How We Put This Guide Together
Weather: we used daily observations rather than monthly averages, and took every day from December 20 to January 1. Our main source is the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional's Playa del Carmen station (SMN 23163), whose daily records for 1998 to 2012 are archived in NOAA's Global Historical Climatology Network. Its record has gaps: 9 Christmas Days have a high, 10 a low and 12 a rainfall reading, and 9 years have a rain reading for every day of the fortnight. We left out one Christmas Day high of 38.9°C in 1998, an isolated reading between days of 28.9°C that is almost certainly an error. We checked the Playa figures against the longer SMN Tulum station record (SMN 23025, 1964 to 2012) and NOAA's Global Summary of the Day for Cozumel airport (station 76644) for 2010 to 2024, used for temperature only; 2014 is missing from that archive. Sea temperatures are our averages of NOAA buoy 42056 for December 20 to 31, 2019 to 2025. Cold-front figures are CONAGUA's September 4, 2026 forecast, and sargassum is the University of South Florida's October 31, 2026 outlook. Hotels: on November 4, 2026 we priced every hotel in central Playa del Carmen and Playacar in our hotel partner's data rated at least 8 out of 10 from at least 500 reviews, with 3 to 5 stars (36 hotels), for two adults on three-night stays from ten check-in dates between December 6, 2026 and January 10, 2027. The medians use the 24 hotels that quoted on all ten dates. The all-inclusive tables cover the all-inclusive resorts in the same area rated at least 8 from at least 300 reviews, at the cheapest rate on the all-inclusive board only; guest scores are our hotel partner's review averages, and facilities come from the resorts' listings on the same day. Tours: on November 4, 2026 we took the 45 most-reviewed experiences on Viator's Playa del Carmen listings rated 4.5 or more, leaving out whale shark tours, which do not run in December, and checked live availability and price for two adults on December 24, 25 and 31, 2026 and January 1, 2027, plus December 10, 11, 18 and 26 and January 8 for comparison. Holiday-window review averages are Viator reviews posted between December 22, 2025 and January 12, 2026. Events and opening hours come from official sources where they exist (PROFEDET, SEP, INAH, Xcaret, ASUR) and from local press where they do not; dates not yet announced for 2026 are labelled as expected, based on last year. We have not stayed at these hotels or taken these tours ourselves.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is Playa del Carmen good for Christmas?+
Yes, if you want warm weather and a walkable town on December 25 and can book early. Christmas Day averaged a 28°C (82°F) high at Playa's own weather station and 30°C (85°F) at Cozumel airport, and in 2025 the town put on free shows, an ice rink and a Christmas parade on Fifth Avenue. The trade-offs are peak crowds, with Mexico's school break running December 21 to January 5, and prices: across 24 hotels, the median night for two was $198 for a stay from December 23, against $102 from December 13.
What is the weather like in Playa del Carmen at Christmas?+
Warm and mostly dry. From December 20 to January 1, Playa del Carmen's weather station averaged highs of 28.1°C (83°F) and lows of 18.1°C (65°F), and a typical Christmas fortnight had just one day with 1 mm of rain or more. The main risk is a norte, a cold front with strong wind and a cooler day: Christmas Day 2022 reached only 21.4°C (71°F) at Cozumel airport, and Mexico's weather service forecasts 9 cold fronts for December 2026.
Is it warm enough to swim in Playa del Carmen at Christmas?+
Yes. The nearest long-running NOAA buoy averaged 27.6 to 28.2°C (82 to 83°F) from December 20 to 31 in 2019 to 2025, though it is far out in the Caribbean and the water at the beach is likely a little cooler after a cold front. During a norte, the sea can be too rough for snorkelling trips for a day or two.
How much more expensive is Playa del Carmen at Christmas?+
On our November 4, 2026 check of 24 hotels, the median night for two was $102 for a stay from December 13, $198 from December 23 (about double), $217 from December 24 and $271 over New Year's Eve, and still $201 from January 3. Hotel by hotel, the Christmas stay cost a median 1.7 times the same hotel's mid-December rate. All-inclusive resorts ranged from $291 (Riu Lupita) to $838 (Playacar Palace) a night for two from December 23, before taxes and fees.
What is open in Playa del Carmen on Christmas Day?+
Hotels and resorts, Xcaret, which says it opens every day including holidays, and about half of the top tours. Banks and government offices close, because December 25 is a federal rest day. Of the 45 most-reviewed tours we checked, 23 could be booked for December 25, 2026, including Grupo Xcaret's Xenotes cenote tour, Amigo Tours' Chichén Itzá and Tulum trips and the Maroma catamaran. Nineteen were closed, including the Fifth Avenue food tour, the jungle buggy and ATV tours from Playa and the biggest Chichén Itzá tour.
What is a good Christmas itinerary for Playa del Carmen?+
Arrive on December 20, do Chichén Itzá on the 21st before the holiday crowds, take a boat trip or the Cozumel ferry on the 22nd while you still have spare days if a cold front cancels it, do the food tour and the Christmas shows on the 23rd, keep the 24th for the beach and Christmas Eve dinner, and spend Christmas Day on the Xenotes cenote tour or at Xcaret. Use the 26th for Tulum or a rescheduled boat trip, and fly home on the 27th before New Year's rates.
Is there a New Year's Eve party in Playa del Carmen?+
In 2025 the town held Playa Fest at Parque Fundadores, by the ferry pier, from 7 pm to 1 am on December 31, with DJs, neon lighting and cold pyrotechnics. The 2026 event had not been announced when we checked. Many resorts also hold their own New Year's Eve galas, sometimes at an extra charge.
Is Playa del Carmen busy at Christmas?+
Very. Mexico's school winter break runs from December 21, 2026 to January 5, 2027, and Cancún airport, where most visitors to Playa arrive, handled 2.7 million passengers in December 2025, with its busiest day of the year on Saturday, December 20, 2025. Fifth Avenue, the beach clubs and restaurants are at their busiest, and the hotels we priced had fewer rooms left for the days after Christmas.
When should I book a Christmas vacation in Playa del Carmen?+
As soon as possible. On November 4, 2026, 6 of the 11 all-inclusives we priced returned no all-inclusive rate for a New Year's Eve check-in, and the hotel rates left were at peak levels. Book Christmas Day tours early too, since many Playa-based operators close on December 25 and those that run can sell out.
