Top tours bookable on Christmas Day

Christmas in Tulum means warm, dry days, most tours running on December 25 and quiet ruins after a slow 2026, but beach-zone hotel rates that double for Christmas and triple for New Year. We priced 46 hotels date by date and checked which tours actually run.

What You Should Know

  • Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday. December 25 and January 1 are federal rest days in Mexico, December 24 is not, and Mexico's school winter break runs from December 21, 2026 to January 5, 2027.
  • Where you sleep decides the price. Across 20 well-rated hotels, the median night for two was $140 for a stay from December 13, $240 from December 23 and $508 over New Year's Eve. In the beach zone the Christmas median was $382; in town it was $133.
  • New Year costs far more than Christmas. Hotel by hotel, a New Year's Eve stay cost a median 3.2 times the same hotel's mid-December rate, and a stay from January 3 still cost 3.1 times, during the Zamna festival's ten-day season from December 31 to January 10.
  • Most tours run on Christmas Day. Of the 45 most-reviewed tours we checked, 31 could be booked for December 25, 2026, including several Tulum-based cenote, Sian Ka'an and cooking tours; 10 were closed, among them our December pick and the Tulum walking food tour.
  • 2026 has been a slow year for Tulum. Aeroméxico stopped flying to Tulum airport on September 30, 2026, and Volaris and American Airlines have announced cuts from early January 2027, so check your flight before you book the hotel.

Christmas in Tulum: The Honest Picture

⭐ Best Christmas window: arrive by Monday, December 21, check in no later than Wednesday, December 23, and leave by December 27. In our sample, the median hotel night for two was $198 for a stay from the 21st and $240 from the 23rd, against $290 from Christmas Eve, $340 from December 27 and $508 over New Year's Eve.

💰 Christmas 2026 hotel prices in Tulum (median per night for two adults, in US dollars):
Mid-December (check in Sunday, December 13): ~$140 · Christmas (December 23 to 26): ~$240 · Check in on Christmas Eve: ~$290 · New Year's Eve (December 30 to January 2): ~$508
Each figure is the median of the cheapest rate on any meal plan at the same 20 hotels in Tulum town and the beach zone, rated 8 or more from at least 300 reviews, for a three-night stay from that date, pulled November 4, 2026, before the taxes and fees added at checkout. Beach-zone hotels cost far more than town hotels; see the tables below.

Planning Christmas in Tulum for 2026? Christmas Eve is Thursday, December 24 and Christmas Day is Friday, December 25. Tulum's weather station recorded an average Christmas Day high of 29.5°C (85°F) and low of 17.9°C (64°F) over 38 years from 1964 to 2012, and Cozumel airport, the nearest airport with a long record, averaged a 29.7°C (85°F) high on the 14 Christmas Days from 2010 to 2024 with a full record. That is beach weather on most days, though a cold front can bring a cooler, windy day. The weather figures on this page are long-term records; the hotel prices, tour schedules and event dates are for Christmas 2026 specifically.

Christmas in Tulum is quieter than its New Year. Christmas week brings Mexico's school holidays and higher rates, but the real peak comes after December 27, when the New Year party season starts and beach-zone hotels charge their highest rates of the year. Tulum is also coming off a slow 2026: fewer airlines fly to its airport, and INAH counted 22,100 visitors at the Tulum ruins in September 2026, against 74,385 in September 2024, as reported by Diario de Yucatán.

In our view, Christmas in Tulum is worth it if you want a warm, relaxed Christmas with cenotes, ruins and Sian Ka'an on the doorstep: stay in town to keep costs down, check in by the 23rd, and leave before New Year unless the parties are the point. If your dates can move, the first half of December has the same dry-season weather for much less, and our Tulum in December guide covers that window.

Where to Stay for Christmas in Tulum

Tulum splits into two very different places to stay. The town (Tulum Pueblo, with Aldea Zamá and La Veleta) has the cheaper hotels, the restaurants and the bus station; the beach zone, the road south of the ruins along the sea, has the boutique and design hotels and the beach clubs. In our sample the Christmas median was $133 a night in town and $382 in the beach zone, and over New Year's Eve $217 against $679. Tulum airport is about 30 minutes from town and Cancún airport about two hours; our Tulum airport transfer guide compares both.

Compare and Book Tulum Tours That Run on Christmas Day

These six tours could all be booked for Friday, December 25, 2026 when we checked. Our Christmas pick is the Cenote Triple Adventure: it runs from Tulum on every holiday date at the same price, it is a cenote day that a cold front will not cancel, and its reviews from last year's holidays were all 5 stars. It meets at a central point in town rather than collecting from hotels, so beach-zone guests need a short taxi. Our Tulum cenote tour guide compares it with the others.

Tulum Weather at Christmas: Temperature, Rain and Nortes

We read the daily records rather than the monthly averages, because a Christmas trip only cares about one fortnight. The figures below come from the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional's Tulum station, whose daily records for 1964 to 2012 are archived by NOAA, and from NOAA's daily summaries for Cozumel airport (station 76644) for recent years.

Sunrise and sunset, December 25About 7:22 am and 6:17 pmOur calculation for Tulum (UTC−5)

Why the averages and sample sizes differ: the fortnight rows average every day from December 20 to January 1, so they run a little cooler than Christmas Day alone. The Tulum record has gaps: 38 Christmas Days have a high and a low, 39 a rainfall reading, and 32 years have a rain reading for every day of the fortnight.

What it feels like: warm, sunny afternoons around 29°C and cool evenings, with less humidity than in summer. Pack a light layer for dinners outdoors, especially in the beach zone, and for the days after a front.

Nortes: the main weather risk at Christmas is a norte, a cold front from the north that brings one to three days of strong wind, rough sea and a sharp drop in temperature. Christmas Day 2022 reached only 21.4°C at Cozumel airport. Mexico's water authority forecasts 56 cold fronts for the 2026–2027 season, above the 1990–2020 average of 50, with 9 in December, the most of any month. Plan on at least one breezy, cooler spell during a Christmas week, and keep sea snorkelling and Punta Allen boat trips flexible.

Swimming: the sea stays warm enough to swim without a wetsuit. The nearest long-running NOAA buoy, station 42056, averaged 27.6 to 28.2°C over December 20 to 31 in 2019 to 2025; it sits far out in the Caribbean, so the water at the beach is likely a little cooler, especially after a norte. The cenotes stay a steady, cooler temperature year-round.

Sargassum: 2026 was a record year for sargassum on the Riviera Maya's beaches. The University of South Florida's October 31, 2026 outlook found amounts fell by more than half in October and expects them to keep falling until about the end of November or December, with some much smaller landings in the Caribbean still likely. Our Tulum sargassum guide links to live beach reports to check before you go.

Crowds and Hotel Prices Over Christmas, Date by Date

How to read the prices: every figure is in US dollars, per night, for two adults in one room, for a three-night stay from the check-in date shown, pulled on November 4, 2026, before the taxes and fees added at checkout. They are sample rates, not quotes.

The medians are for the 20 hotels that quoted on all ten dates (3 three-star, 6 four-star and 11 five-star; 9 in the beach zone and 11 in town), so each row compares the same hotels. Hotel by hotel, the Christmas stay cost a median 1.6 times the same hotel's December 13 rate, New Year's Eve 3.2 times and a stay from January 3 still 3.1 times. That New Year peak is far steeper than we found in Cancún or Playa del Carmen, and it lines up with Tulum's New Year party season. Town hotels barely moved between December 21 and 24, then jumped from the 27th.

How busy it gets

Mexico's Secretaría de Educación Pública confirms the 2026–2027 winter break runs from December 21, 2026 to January 5, 2027, and the Zamna festival's ten-day anniversary season runs from December 31, 2026 to January 10, 2027, as reported by Magnetic Magazine.

Against that, 2026 has been a slow year. According to Diario de Yucatán, passenger traffic at Tulum airport fell 33.2% in the first half of 2026, Aeroméxico has cancelled its Tulum flights since September 30, 2026, Volaris will suspend its service from January 7, 2027 and American Airlines will cut routes from January 5, 2027. The same report says about 70 businesses in town had closed temporarily by July. In practice that means Christmas week should feel less crowded than in past years, but check that your flights and any restaurant you are counting on are still running.

How Much Does Christmas in Tulum Cost in 2026?

All prices are in US dollars, from our November 4, 2026 checks, for Christmas 2026 dates.

ExpenseChristmas 2026 price
Hotel in town, median of 11 hotels, check in December 23$133 a night for two ($399 for three nights)
Hotel in the beach zone, median of 9 hotels, check in December 23$382 a night for two ($1,146 for three nights)
Private transfer from Tulum airport$140 one way per vehicle, booked for December 23
Cenote Triple Adventure$130 per person, plus $15 for lunch
Cooking class in a local home$93 per person, with food, beer, wine and mezcal
Muyil and Sian Ka'an float tour$219 per person
Tulum ruins entrance for foreign visitors265 MXN (about $14) per adult since July 20, 2026; see our Tulum ruins guide

Example: a couple, three nights at Botánica Tulum in town from December 23. The hotel costs $157 a night, or $471. Add private transfers from Tulum airport both ways ($280, if the return costs the same $140 we found for the arrival), the Cenote Triple Adventure for two ($260) and the cooking class for two ($186). That comes to about $1,197 before flights, meals, tips and the taxes and fees added at hotel checkout. The same trip at Hotel Shibari in the beach zone ($257 a night) would be about $1,497.

What's Open in Tulum on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day

December 25 and January 1 are mandatory rest days under Mexico's federal labour law, as the government's labour advocate, PROFEDET, lists, so banks and government offices close; December 24 and December 12 are not.

We checked each of the 45 most-reviewed tours on Viator's Tulum listings, rated 4.5 or more and leaving out whale shark tours and transfers, for availability on the holiday dates, and against two ordinary Fridays, December 11 and 18, so a tour that simply does not run on Fridays is not counted as closed. Thirty-one could be booked for Christmas Day, 10 were closed, and 4 were unclear. Several Tulum-based operators ran on Christmas Day but not on New Year's Day. Prices are per person, for two adults.

The ruins and the parks

  • Tulum ruins: INAH lists the site as open daily, 8 am to 5 pm with last entry at 3:30 pm, but publishes no holiday hours, so we could not confirm December 25 or January 1 officially. Go at opening time to beat the tour buses.
  • Xcaret: the park, about 50 minutes north, says in its official FAQ that it opens every day from 8:30 am to 10 pm, holidays included.
  • Restaurants and beach clubs: we could not check them one by one. Book Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve dinners ahead, and confirm that the place is open, since some businesses in town closed during 2026.

How Tulum Celebrates Christmas: The Town Square, Nochebuena and New Year

Tulum's Christmas is a small-town affair compared with Cancún's or Playa del Carmen's. In 2025 the town lit its Christmas lights from the municipal palace to the kiosk in the central park, held a holiday parade along the main avenue and opened a Christmas village around the kiosk for December, as reported by The Tulum Times.

Christmas Eve in Tulum

Christmas Eve dinner is the big night. Many hotels and restaurants in town and the beach zone put on a special dinner, often with a set menu; ask your hotel what it plans and book a table well ahead. A cooking class in a local home on the 24th, which was bookable on our check, is a good way to see how a Mexican family prepares for Nochebuena.

1. Swim Three Cenotes on the Cenote Triple Adventure

Our Christmas pick runs every holiday date at the same $130 and visits three very different cenotes in about four hours, with caves and snorkelling. Cenotes are sheltered from the wind, so it is the plan least likely to be spoiled by a norte. See our Tulum cenote tour guide.

2. See the Tulum Ruins at Opening Time

The clifftop ruins are the reason most people come, and December is comfortable for walking them. Go at 8 am, before the tour buses. Entry for foreign visitors has been 265 MXN since July 20, 2026. INAH publishes no holiday hours, so plan the ruins for a day other than December 25 or January 1. Our Tulum ruins guide compares a DIY visit with a tour.

3. Float Through the Mangroves at Muyil and Sian Ka'an

Mexico Kan Tours' Muyil trip, rated 4.9 from 846 reviews, combines the quieter Muyil ruins with a float down a canal in the Sian Ka'an biosphere reserve, and was bookable on all four holiday dates at $219. See our Sian Ka'an tour guide.

4. Cook a Mexican Meal in a Local Home

The cooking class in a Tulum family home, rated 4.9 from 613 reviews, includes the food, beer, wine and mezcal, and ran on every holiday date at $93. On Christmas Eve it is a good way into a Mexican Nochebuena. See our Tulum cooking class guide.

5. Climb Into the Jungle at Cobá

The Cobá trip with Punta Laguna and a cenote ran on December 24, 25 and 31 at $184, but not on New Year's Day. Our Cobá ruins guide covers the site.

6. Paddle Sian Ka'an at Sunset

The sunset kayak tour in Sian Ka'an ran on all four holiday dates at $120, plus a reserve entrance fee of 225 MXN per person paid separately. Transport is not included.

7. Take the Boat Trip to Punta Allen

The full day through Sian Ka'an to Punta Allen, rated 4.9 from 1,231 reviews, ran on December 24, 25 and 31 at $254. It goes out to sea, so a norte can cancel the snorkel stop; one recent reviewer could not snorkel because of high waves.

8. Snorkel With Turtles Off the Tulum Coast

The two-hour Tulum snorkel ran on every holiday date at $49, the cheapest tour on our list. Book it for a calm day. See our Tulum snorkelling guide.

9. Visit the Christmas Village in Town

In 2025 the town opened a Christmas village around the kiosk in the central park, with lights from the municipal palace. It is small, free and where local families go in the evening.

10. Stay for New Year's Eve, If the Parties Are the Point

Zamna's tenth-anniversary season runs from December 31, 2026 to January 10, 2027, and the beach clubs hold their own New Year's Eve parties. Expect the year's highest hotel rates: the beach-zone median was $679 a night over New Year's Eve.

A Tulum Christmas Itinerary: December 20 to 27, 2026

This week-long plan puts the ruins and the long day trips before Christmas, keeps Christmas Day for things that actually run on the 25th, and gets you home before the New Year rates. Prices are from our November 4, 2026 checks, per person; the opening information is from the tables above.

Staying for New Year's Eve instead? Book now and budget for it: on November 4, only 27 of the 46 hotels we priced had any room for a December 30 check-in, and the median for the same 20 hotels was $508 a night.

New Year Prices, Flight Cuts and Closed Tours: What to Watch Out For

  • New Year costs about three times mid-December. Hotel by hotel, a New Year's Eve stay cost a median 3.2 times the same hotel's December 13 rate, and a stay from January 3 was still 3.1 times, so plan to leave by December 27 if price matters.
  • Check your flight first. Aeroméxico has cancelled its Tulum flights since September 30, 2026, Volaris suspends from January 7, 2027 and American Airlines cuts routes from January 5, 2027, according to Diario de Yucatán. Flying into Cancún adds about two hours each way.
  • Some favourites close on Christmas Day. Our December pick, the Tulum ruins, Akumal turtles and cenote tour, the walking food tour and the Selva Maya zipline park were all bookable on December 24 and 31 but closed on December 25 and January 1.
  • Beach-zone hotels cost about three times as much as town at Christmas. The Christmas median was $382 a night in the beach zone and $133 in town; taxis between the two add up over a week.
  • Extra fees. The Sian Ka'an reserve fee (225 MXN per person on the sunset kayak), the ruins entry (265 MXN) and lunch on the cenote tour ($15) are paid on top. Hotel rates on this page exclude the taxes and fees added at checkout.

Our Take

Tulum's Christmas surprised us twice: more tours run on December 25 than in Cancún or Playa del Carmen, and hotel prices barely move in town until the 27th, then triple for the New Year party season. Book a town hotel for Christmas week, plan the cenotes or Sian Ka'an for the 25th, and leave before New Year unless the parties are the point.

Tips for Christmas in Tulum

  • Stay in town for value. Town hotels had a Christmas median of $133 a night against $382 in the beach zone.
  • Leave by December 27. The median hotel night rose from $240 for a stay from the 23rd to $340 from the 27th and $508 over New Year's Eve.
  • Do the ruins before Christmas, at 8 am. INAH publishes no holiday hours, and opening time beats the tour buses.
  • Book Christmas Day plans first. Thirty-one of the 45 top tours we checked ran on December 25, but our December pick and the food tour did not.
  • Book your airport transfer with your flights, and check whether your airline still flies to Tulum airport.
  • Pack a light layer. Evenings in the Christmas fortnight averaged about 18°C, and a norte can bring a 21°C day.
  • Spending Christmas elsewhere on the coast? Our Christmas in Cancún guide, Christmas in Playa del Carmen guide and Christmas in Cozumel guide use the same date-by-date hotel prices and Christmas Day tour checks.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Tulum in December guide covers the quieter first half of the month, our Tulum in January guide covers the dry season after the holidays, and our guide to the best time to visit Tulum compares the whole year.

How We Put This Guide Together

Weather: we used daily observations rather than monthly averages, and took every day from December 20 to January 1. Our main source is the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional's Tulum station (SMN 23025), whose daily records for 1964 to 2012 are archived in NOAA's Global Historical Climatology Network. Its record has gaps: 38 Christmas Days have a high and a low, 39 a rainfall reading, and 32 years have a rain reading for every day of the fortnight. For recent years we used NOAA's Global Summary of the Day for Cozumel airport (station 76644) for 2010 to 2024, for temperature only; 2014 is missing from that archive. Sea temperatures are our averages of NOAA buoy 42056 for December 20 to 31, 2019 to 2025. Cold-front figures are CONAGUA's September 4, 2026 forecast, and sargassum is the University of South Florida's October 31, 2026 outlook. Hotels: on November 4, 2026 we priced every hotel in Tulum town and the beach zone in our hotel partner's data rated at least 8 out of 10 from at least 300 reviews, with 3 to 5 stars, leaving out hostels and duplicate listings (46 hotels), for two adults on three-night stays from ten check-in dates between December 6, 2026 and January 10, 2027. The medians use the 20 hotels that quoted on all ten dates. We count as beach zone the hotels along the coast road south of the ruins; the rest are town. Guest scores are our hotel partner's review averages on the same day. Tours: on November 4, 2026 we took the 45 most-reviewed experiences on Viator's Tulum listings rated 4.5 or more, leaving out whale shark tours and transfers, and checked live availability and price for two adults on December 24, 25 and 31, 2026 and January 1, 2027, plus December 10, 11, 18 and 26 and January 8 for comparison. Holiday-window review averages are Viator reviews posted between December 22, 2025 and January 12, 2026. Events and opening hours come from official sources where they exist (PROFEDET, SEP, INAH, Xcaret) and from local and music press where they do not; dates not yet announced for 2026 are labelled as expected, based on last year. We have not stayed at these hotels or taken these tours ourselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tulum good for Christmas?+

Yes, if you want a warm, relaxed Christmas and can stay in town or book early. Christmas Day averaged a 29.5°C (85°F) high over 38 years of records, a typical Christmas fortnight has about one wet day, and 31 of the 45 top tours we checked could be booked for December 25. The trade-off is price, especially on the beach: across 20 hotels the median night for two was $240 for a stay from December 23, against $140 from December 13, and $382 in the beach zone.

What is the weather like in Tulum at Christmas?+

Warm and usually dry. From December 20 to January 1, Tulum's weather station averaged highs of 29.0°C (84°F) and lows of 17.6°C (64°F), with a median of one day of 1 mm of rain or more in the fortnight, and none at all in 9 of 32 years. The main risk is a norte, a cold front with strong wind and a cooler day: Christmas Day 2022 reached only 21.4°C (71°F) at nearby Cozumel airport.

How much more expensive is Tulum at Christmas?+

On our November 4, 2026 check of 20 hotels, the median night for two was $140 for a stay from December 13, $240 from December 23 and $508 over New Year's Eve, and still $478 from January 3. Hotel by hotel, Christmas cost a median 1.6 times the same hotel's mid-December rate and New Year's Eve 3.2 times. Town hotels were much cheaper than the beach zone: a Christmas median of $133 against $382.

What is open in Tulum on Christmas Day?+

Hotels, many restaurants, and most tours: of the 45 most-reviewed tours we checked, 31 could be booked for December 25, 2026, including the Cenote Triple Adventure, the Muyil and Sian Ka'an float, a cooking class in a local home and the two-hour Tulum snorkel. Ten were closed, including the Tulum ruins, Akumal turtles and cenote tour and the walking food tour. INAH publishes no holiday hours for the Tulum ruins, and banks and government offices close.

Are the Tulum ruins open on Christmas Day?+

INAH lists the Tulum ruins as open daily from 8 am to 5 pm, with last entry at 3:30 pm, but publishes no holiday hours, so we could not confirm December 25 or January 1 officially. The safest plan is to visit on another day of your trip, at opening time. Entry for foreign visitors has been 265 MXN since July 20, 2026.

What is a good Christmas itinerary for Tulum?+

Arrive on December 20, see the Tulum ruins at 8 am on the 21st, do Cobá on the 22nd and Muyil and Sian Ka'an on the 23rd, take a cooking class in a local home on Christmas Eve before dinner, and spend Christmas Day on the Cenote Triple Adventure, which runs on December 25. Keep the 26th for snorkelling or a sunset kayak, and fly home on the 27th before the New Year rates.

Is Tulum busy at Christmas?+

Busier than early December, but 2026 has been a slow year. Mexico's school winter break runs from December 21, 2026 to January 5, 2027, and the Zamna festival season runs from December 31 to January 10. Against that, passenger traffic at Tulum airport fell 33.2% in the first half of 2026 and several airlines have cut flights, so Christmas week should feel less crowded than New Year.

When should I book Christmas in Tulum?+

As soon as possible for New Year's Eve; on November 4, 2026, only 27 of the 46 hotels we priced had a room for a December 30 check-in. Christmas week is easier, especially in town, but book Christmas Day tours early, since operators can sell out or change their holiday schedules.
