Christmas in Cozumel means warm, mostly dry days, more tours running on December 25 than in Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum, and hotels that are filling fast. We priced 24 hotels and the island's all-inclusives date by date and checked which tours actually run on Christmas Day.

What You Should Know

  • Christmas 2026 falls on a Friday. December 25 and January 1 are federal rest days in Mexico, December 24 is not, and Mexico's school winter break runs from December 21, 2026 to January 5, 2027.
  • Rooms are the scarce thing. Of 24 well-rated Cozumel hotels we priced on November 4, 22 quoted a room for a stay from December 13 but only 14 for New Year's Eve, and several of the best-rated all-inclusives returned no all-inclusive rate for check-ins after Christmas.
  • New Year rises less than on the mainland. For the 10 hotels that quoted every date, the median night for two was $107 from December 13, $180 from December 23 and $261 over New Year's Eve, and back to $186 from January 3.
  • Christmas Day is easy to fill. Of the 45 most-reviewed Cozumel tours we checked, 34 could be booked for December 25, 2026, including the beach clubs, ATV and jeep tours, the catamaran, the submarine and Discover Scuba; 11 were closed, among them the food tour and the Mayan ruins tour.
  • Cruise ships keep coming over the holidays. In past years Cozumel's port authority reported 7 ships with 18,618 passengers on Christmas Eve 2022, and 6 ships on New Year's Eve 2025, so the beach clubs and the waterfront are busiest on ship days.

Christmas in Cozumel: The Honest Picture

⭐ Best Christmas window: book now, arrive by Monday, December 21 and check in no later than Wednesday, December 23. In our sample, the median hotel night for two was $142 for a stay from the 21st and $180 from the 23rd, against $210 from December 27 and $261 over New Year's Eve, and fewer hotels had rooms left with every week that passed.

FactorOur Christmas Score
Weather8/10: warm afternoons around 28 to 30°C; a norte can bring a cool, windy day

Crowds4/10: school holidays and cruise-ship days; quiet evenings once the ships leave
Prices4/10: the typical hotel about 1.7 times its mid-December rate, 1.9 times over New Year
Tours on Christmas Day8/10: 34 of 45 top tours bookable
Beaches & Sargassum8/10: the west coast beach clubs face away from the open Caribbean

Couples and divers8/10: warm water and reef dives that run on Christmas Day

💰 Christmas 2026 hotel prices in Cozumel (median per night for two adults, in US dollars):
Mid-December (check in Sunday, December 13): ~$107 · Christmas (December 23 to 26): ~$180 · Check in on Christmas Eve: ~$176 · New Year's Eve (December 30 to January 2): ~$261
Each figure is the median of the cheapest rate on any meal plan at the same 10 Cozumel hotels, rated 8 or more from at least 150 reviews, that quoted a room on all ten of our sample dates, for a three-night stay from that date, pulled November 4, 2026, before the taxes and fees added at checkout. It is a small sample, because many hotels had nothing left to sell for some dates; see the tables below.

Planning Christmas in Cozumel for 2026? Christmas Eve is Thursday, December 24 and Christmas Day is Friday, December 25. Cozumel's weather station recorded an average Christmas Day high of 28.6°C (83°F) and low of 20.5°C (69°F) in 11 years of readings from 1994 to 2012, and Cozumel airport averaged a 29.7°C (85°F) high on the 14 Christmas Days from 2010 to 2024 with a full record. Evenings are milder here than on the mainland. The weather figures on this page are long-term records; the hotel prices, tour schedules and event dates are for Christmas 2026 specifically.

Christmas on Cozumel is a peak-season trip with an island twist. Mexico's schools break up on December 21, cruise ships keep calling through the holidays, and the island has fewer hotel rooms than the mainland, so the real risk is not finding a room rather than the price. In our sample, New Year prices rose by less than in Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum, but the number of hotels with any room left fell steadily from mid-December.

In our view, Christmas in Cozumel is worth it if you want warm water, reef diving or snorkelling and a quiet island evening after the ships leave: book the hotel now, plan the beach club for a day with fewer ships, and keep the boat trips early in the week in case of a norte. If your dates can move, the first half of December has the same weather for less, and our Cozumel in December guide covers that window.

Where to Stay for Christmas in Cozumel

Book now if you have not already. On November 4, 22 of the 24 hotels we priced quoted a room for a stay from December 13, but only 20 for December 23, 15 for December 27 and 14 for New Year's Eve. Several of the best-rated all-inclusives returned no all-inclusive rate for any check-in after Christmas.

Cozumel has three places to stay. San Miguel, the island's only town, has the cheaper hotels, the restaurants and the ferry pier. North of town are a few beachfront hotels within a short taxi ride, and south of town, along the Costera Sur, are the big all-inclusives, the beach clubs and the cruise piers. Cozumel airport is a few minutes from town; our Cozumel airport transfer guide and Playa del Carmen ferry guide cover both ways in.

Compare and Book Cozumel Tours That Run on Christmas Day

These six tours could all be booked for Friday, December 25, 2026 when we checked. Our Christmas pick is the Paradise Beach all-inclusive day pass: it runs every holiday date at the same price, it is an easy, unhurried Christmas Day, and its reviews from last year's holidays held up at 4.7. One guest on New Year's Day 2026 mentioned the heated pool, rocky entry to the sea and some seaweed and jellyfish that day, so bring water shoes. Our best beach clubs in Cozumel guide compares it with the others.

Cozumel Weather at Christmas: Temperature, Rain and Nortes

We read the daily records rather than the monthly averages, because a Christmas trip only cares about one fortnight. The figures below come from the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional's Cozumel station, whose daily records for 1994 to 2012 are archived by NOAA, and from NOAA's daily summaries for Cozumel airport (station 76644) for 2010 to 2024.

Why the sources differ: the island station's record is short and has gaps, with 11 Christmas Days and only 8 complete fortnights, so we checked it against the airport's more recent record. Both put a typical Christmas Day high between 28 and 30°C.

What it feels like: warm, sunny afternoons around 29°C and mild evenings around 20°C, a little warmer at night than on the mainland. A light layer is enough for dinners outdoors.

Nortes: the main weather risk at Christmas is a norte, a cold front from the north that brings one to three days of strong wind, rough sea and a drop in temperature. Christmas Day 2022 reached only 21.4°C at Cozumel airport. Mexico's water authority forecasts 56 cold fronts for the 2026–2027 season, above the 1990–2020 average of 50, with 9 in December, the most of any month. A strong front can cancel boat trips and ferry crossings, so keep the dives and the catamaran early in your stay.

Swimming and diving: the sea stays warm enough to swim and dive comfortably. The nearest long-running NOAA buoy, station 42056, averaged 27.6 to 28.2°C over December 20 to 31 in 2019 to 2025; it sits far out in the Caribbean, so the water at the reefs may be a little cooler, especially after a norte. Our Cozumel diving guide covers the reefs.

Sargassum: the beach clubs and hotels on Cozumel's west coast face the mainland rather than the open Caribbean, which is why the island had far less sargassum than Playa del Carmen in 2026. The University of South Florida's October 31, 2026 outlook expects amounts in the Caribbean to keep falling until about the end of November or December. Our Cozumel sargassum guide has the details.

Crowds and Hotel Prices Over Christmas, Date by Date

How to read the prices: every figure is in US dollars, per night, for two adults in one room, for a three-night stay from the check-in date shown, pulled on November 4, 2026, before the taxes and fees added at checkout. They are sample rates, not quotes.

Check-in (3 nights)Median per nightvs. December 13Hotels with a rate (of 24 priced)

Sunday, January 3, 2027$186+74%17
Sunday, January 10, 2027$160+50%22

The medians are for the 10 hotels that quoted on all ten dates (2 three-star, 5 four-star and 3 five-star), so each row compares the same hotels. Hotel by hotel, the Christmas stay cost a median 1.7 times the same hotel's December 13 rate, similar to the mainland, and New Year's Eve 1.9 times, a smaller jump than we found in Cancún (2.0), Playa del Carmen (2.3) or Tulum (3.2). The bigger story is the last column: the number of hotels with any room fell from 22 to 14 by New Year's Eve.

All-inclusive resorts over Christmas

The cheapest all-inclusive rate for two, per night, for three-night stays, in US dollars. "No rate" means the resort returned no all-inclusive price for that stay.

Only three of the eight all-inclusives, Allegro, Occidental and Cozumel Hotel & Resort, quoted an all-inclusive rate on every date in this table. The Explorean had none for any holiday check-in, and Fiesta Americana only for December 27, at $1,143 a night.

How busy it gets

Mexico's Secretaría de Educación Pública confirms the 2026–2027 winter break runs from December 21, 2026 to January 5, 2027. On top of hotel guests, Cozumel is the busiest cruise port in Mexico: the port authority, APIQROO, reported 7 ships with 18,618 passengers on Christmas Eve 2022, as reported by Palco Quintanarroense, and expected 36 ships from December 29, 2025 to January 4, 2026, with 6 on New Year's Eve and 7 on New Year's Day, as reported by Riviera Maya News. The 2026 holiday schedule had not been published when we checked. On ship days the beach clubs, the waterfront and the popular snorkel spots are busiest from mid-morning to late afternoon; evenings in town are much quieter.

How Much Does Christmas in Cozumel Cost in 2026?

All prices are in US dollars, from our November 4, 2026 checks, for Christmas 2026 dates.

ExpenseChristmas 2026 price
Hotel, median of 10 hotels, check in December 23$180 a night for two ($540 for three nights)
All-inclusive resort, check in December 23$337 (Grand Park Royal) to $858 (Cozumel Palace) a night for two
Paradise Beach all-inclusive day pass$81 per person, plus a taxi of about $18 from the cruise port
Catamaran to El Cielo and The Money Bar$80 per person, plus the marine park fee
Discover Scuba on Paradise Reef$169 per person
Ferry from Playa del CarmenFrom about $16 one way, per our ferry guide

Example: a couple, three nights at Playa Azul Cozumel from December 23. The hotel costs $231 a night, or $693. Add the Paradise Beach day pass for two ($162) and the catamaran to El Cielo for two ($160). That comes to about $1,015 before flights, meals, taxis, the marine park fee, tips and the taxes and fees added at hotel checkout. The same trip at Allegro Cozumel, all-inclusive at $398 a night, would be about $1,516 with meals and drinks at the resort included.

What's Open in Cozumel on Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and New Year's Day

December 25 and January 1 are mandatory rest days under Mexico's federal labour law, as the government's labour advocate, PROFEDET, lists, so banks and government offices close; December 24 and December 12 are not.

We checked each of the 45 most-reviewed tours on Viator's Cozumel listings, rated 4.5 or more and leaving out transfers, for availability on the holiday dates, and against two ordinary Fridays, December 11 and 18, so a tour that simply does not run on Fridays is not counted as closed. Thirty-four could be booked for Christmas Day and 11 were closed, the highest share of the four destinations we checked. Prices are per person, for two adults.

A tour shown as bookable can still sell out, and operators can change their holiday schedules, so book Christmas Day plans early and check your confirmation. Many Cozumel tours are built around cruise schedules, so check the pickup point if you are staying in a hotel.

The ruins and the ferry

  • San Gervasio and the other ruins: the most-reviewed Mayan ruins tour had no dates at all from December 24 to January 1, so plan the ruins for another day and check the site's holiday hours locally.
  • Ferry to Playa del Carmen: the crossing takes 35 to 45 minutes. We found no published Christmas Day or New Year's Day timetable, and a strong norte can stop the crossings, so check with the operator the day before.
  • Restaurants: some restaurants in San Miguel close early or run limited service on Christmas Eve, so book Nochebuena dinner ahead.

How Cozumel Celebrates Christmas: The Community Tree, Posadas and Nochebuena

Christmas on Cozumel is a small-island affair, centred on San Miguel rather than the resorts. In 2025 the island's parks and museums foundation held its sixth Christmas festival and community tree lighting on Thursday, December 4, at 6 pm at the BiblioAvión Gervasio, free, with a cantata, a dance workshop and a paper Christmas village made by local students, as reported by La Verdad Noticias.

Christmas Eve in Cozumel

Christmas Eve dinner is the big night. The all-inclusives hold special dinners, and some charge extra for them or for the New Year's Eve gala, so ask what is included before you book. In town, book a table ahead, since some restaurants close early or run limited service that evening. The Mayan cooking class at Ix Kool ran on December 24 at $61, a good daytime plan before dinner.

1. Spend Christmas Day at a Beach Club

Our Christmas pick, the Paradise Beach all-inclusive day pass, ran on every holiday date at $81 with food, beer and a large heated pool, and Mr. Sanchos was $79. Pick a day with fewer cruise ships if you can, take water shoes for the rocky entry, and budget for a taxi each way. Our best beach clubs in Cozumel guide compares the five we cover.

2. Dive or Try Discover Scuba

Cozumel's reefs are the reason many people come, and the water is still warm at Christmas. Scuba Life's Discover Scuba on Paradise Reef, rated 5.0 from 840 reviews, was bookable on all four holiday dates at $169. See our Cozumel diving guide.

3. Sail to El Cielo on a Catamaran

The catamaran to the El Cielo sandbar and The Money Bar, with snorkelling at Colombia and Palancar reefs, ran on all four holiday dates at $80, plus the marine park fee. Book it early in your stay in case a norte closes the sea. See our Cozumel catamaran guide.

4. Drive an ATV or Jeep to a Cenote

Coco Adventours' ATV tour with a cenote, snorkelling, a beach club and lunch ran on every holiday date at $95, with pickup anywhere on the island. Another jeep operator was closed on Christmas Day. See our Cozumel ATV guide.

5. Go Down in the Atlantis Submarine

The submarine ran on all four holiday dates at $125, plus the marine park fee, and is a good way to see the reef without getting wet. See our Atlantis submarine guide.

6. Cook a Mayan Meal

The cooking class at Ix Kool ran on every holiday date at $61, a good plan for Christmas Eve before dinner. See our Cozumel cooking class guide.

7. Watch Lucha Libre

The lucha libre experience, with tacos and two margaritas, rated 5.0 from 190 reviews, ran on all four holiday dates at $100. See our lucha libre guide.

8. Snorkel From a Glass-Bottom Boat

At $35, the glass-bottom boat snorkel was the cheapest tour we found running on Christmas Day, plus the marine and pier fee. See our clear boat snorkel guide.

9. See the Island's Christmas in San Miguel

In 2025 the community tree was lit on December 4 at the BiblioAvión Gervasio, and posadas run in the neighbourhoods from December 16 to 24. The 2026 dates were not announced when we checked.

A Cozumel Christmas Itinerary: December 20 to 27, 2026

This week-long plan keeps the boat days early in case of a norte, leaves Christmas Day for the beach, and gets you home before the New Year rates. Prices are from our November 4, 2026 checks, per person; the opening information is from the tables above.

If a norte arrives: swap the boat days for the ATV tour, the cooking class or lucha libre, and move the dive or catamaran to the calm day after the front passes. Tour prices for December 21 to 23 were not part of our check; the figures shown are the prices we found on the holiday dates.

Staying for New Year's Eve instead? Book now: on November 4, only 14 of the 24 hotels we priced had any room for a December 30 check-in.

Full Hotels, Ship Days and Closed Tours: What to Watch Out For

  • Rooms run out before prices peak. The number of hotels with any room fell from 22 for mid-December to 14 for New Year's Eve, and the Explorean, Cozumel Palace and Iberostar Waves returned no all-inclusive rate for check-ins after Christmas.
  • Cruise-ship days crowd the beach clubs. In past years the port has handled 6 to 7 ships a day over the holidays. Go early or pick a day with fewer ships for the beach club, and plan town for the evening.
  • A norte can cancel boats and the ferry. Book dives, the catamaran and the submarine early in your stay so you can move them.
  • Some favourites close on Christmas Day. The Cozumel Food Tour, the Mayan ruins tour, the private van and minibus excursions and one jeep operator were closed on December 25; several were also closed on New Year's Day.
  • Extra costs. Beach club passes exclude transport and towels, boat tours add the marine park fee, and hotel rates on this page exclude the taxes and fees added at checkout.

Our Take

Cozumel surprised us in two ways: more tours run on Christmas Day than in Cancún, Playa del Carmen or Tulum, and New Year prices rise less than on the mainland, but rooms run out. If Cozumel is your Christmas, book the hotel first and the tours second.

Tips for Christmas in Cozumel

  • Book the hotel first. On November 4, only 14 of the 24 hotels we priced had any room for New Year's Eve, and 20 for December 23.
  • Check in by December 23 and leave by the 27th. The median hotel night was $180 for a stay from the 23rd and $210 from the 27th.
  • Do the boat trips early. A norte can close the sea for a day or two, so keep the dives and the catamaran early in the week.
  • Time the beach club for fewer ships, and go early in the day.
  • Book your airport transfer or check the ferry timetable the day before you travel.
  • Bring water shoes. Recent guests at Paradise Beach warn of rocks at the entry to the sea.
  • Spending Christmas elsewhere on the coast? Our Christmas in Cancún guide, Christmas in Playa del Carmen guide and Christmas in Tulum guide use the same date-by-date hotel prices and Christmas Day tour checks.
  • Visiting at a different time of year? Our Cozumel in December guide covers the quieter first half of the month, our Cozumel in January guide covers the dry season after the holidays, and our guide to the best things to do in Cozumel covers the whole island.

How We Put This Guide Together

Weather: we used daily observations rather than monthly averages, and took every day from December 20 to January 1. Our main sources are the Servicio Meteorológico Nacional's Cozumel station (SMN 23048), whose daily records for 1994 to 2012 are archived in NOAA's Global Historical Climatology Network, and NOAA's Global Summary of the Day for Cozumel airport (station 76644) for 2010 to 2024, used for temperature only; 2014 is missing from that archive. The station record has gaps: 11 Christmas Days have a high, a low and a rainfall reading, and 8 years have a rain reading for every day of the fortnight. Sea temperatures are our averages of NOAA buoy 42056 for December 20 to 31, 2019 to 2025. Cold-front figures are CONAGUA's September 4, 2026 forecast, and sargassum is the University of South Florida's October 31, 2026 outlook. Hotels: on November 4, 2026 we priced every Cozumel hotel in our hotel partner's data rated at least 8 out of 10 from at least 150 reviews, with 3 to 5 stars (24 hotels), for two adults on three-night stays from ten check-in dates between December 6, 2026 and January 10, 2027. Cozumel has fewer heavily reviewed hotels than the mainland, so we used a lower review threshold than on our Cancún page. The medians use the 10 hotels that quoted on all ten dates. The all-inclusive table covers the island's all-inclusive resorts with at least 100 reviews, at the cheapest rate on the all-inclusive board only; Grand Park Royal, rated 7.9, is included because it is one of the island's largest all-inclusives. Guest scores are our hotel partner's review averages on the same day. Tours: on November 4, 2026 we took the 45 most-reviewed experiences on Viator's Cozumel listings rated 4.5 or more, leaving out transfers, and checked live availability and price for two adults on December 24, 25 and 31, 2026 and January 1, 2027, plus December 10, 11, 18 and 26 and January 8 for comparison. Holiday-window review averages are Viator reviews posted between December 22, 2025 and January 12, 2026. Events and opening hours come from official sources where they exist (PROFEDET, SEP, APIQROO) and from local press where they do not; dates not yet announced for 2026 are labelled as expected, based on last year. We have not stayed at these hotels or taken these tours ourselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Cozumel good for Christmas?+

Yes, if you book early. Christmas Day averaged a 28.6°C (83°F) high at Cozumel's weather station and 29.7°C (85°F) at the airport, a typical Christmas fortnight has about two wet days, and 34 of the 45 top tours we checked could be booked for December 25. The catch is rooms: on November 4, 2026 only 14 of the 24 well-rated hotels we priced had a room for New Year's Eve, and several top all-inclusives had no all-inclusive rate after Christmas.

What is the weather like in Cozumel at Christmas?+

Warm and mostly dry. From December 20 to January 1, Cozumel's weather station averaged highs of 28.9°C (84°F) and lows of 20.2°C (68°F), with a median of 2 days of 1 mm of rain or more in the fortnight. The main risk is a norte, a cold front with strong wind and a cooler day: Christmas Day 2022 reached only 21.4°C (71°F) at Cozumel airport.

Can you dive in Cozumel at Christmas?+

Yes. The sea stays warm, around 27.6 to 28.2°C on average at the nearest long-running NOAA buoy, and Discover Scuba on Paradise Reef could be booked on December 24, 25 and 31 and January 1 at $169. A strong norte can close the sea for a day or two, so book dives early in your stay.

How much more expensive is Cozumel at Christmas?+

On our November 4, 2026 check, the median night for two at the 10 hotels that quoted every date was $107 for a stay from December 13, $180 from December 23 and $261 over New Year's Eve. Hotel by hotel, Christmas cost a median 1.7 times the mid-December rate and New Year's Eve 1.9 times, a smaller New Year jump than on the mainland. All-inclusives ranged from $337 (Grand Park Royal) to $858 (Cozumel Palace) a night for two from December 23.

What is open in Cozumel on Christmas Day?+

Most things tourists use: of the 45 most-reviewed tours we checked, 34 could be booked for December 25, 2026, including the Paradise Beach and Mr. Sanchos beach club passes, the catamaran to El Cielo, the Atlantis submarine, Discover Scuba, ATV tours and a Mayan cooking class. The Cozumel Food Tour, the Mayan ruins tour and several private excursions were closed. Banks and government offices close, because December 25 is a federal rest day.

Do cruise ships come to Cozumel at Christmas?+

Yes. The port authority reported 7 ships with 18,618 passengers on Christmas Eve 2022, and 36 ships from December 29, 2025 to January 4, 2026, with 6 on New Year's Eve and 7 on New Year's Day. The 2026 holiday schedule had not been published when we checked. Ship days crowd the beach clubs and the waterfront from mid-morning to late afternoon.

What is a good Christmas itinerary for Cozumel?+

Arrive on December 20, dive or try Discover Scuba on the 21st, take the catamaran to El Cielo on the 22nd, do an ATV tour with a cenote on the 23rd, take a Mayan cooking class on Christmas Eve before dinner, and spend Christmas Day at the Paradise Beach Club, which runs on December 25. Keep the 26th for the submarine, lucha libre or a boat trip moved by wind, and leave on the 27th.

When should I book Christmas in Cozumel?+

Now. On November 4, 2026, 20 of the 24 hotels we priced had a room for December 23 and only 14 for New Year's Eve, and the Explorean, Cozumel Palace and Iberostar Waves returned no all-inclusive rate for check-ins after Christmas. Tours are easier: most run on Christmas Day, but book them once the hotel is confirmed.
