A week in Cancún fits the island, the ruins, an underground river, Tulum and real beach time without rushing. Here is the order that works, with start times, live prices and what seven days cost for two by month.

What You Should Know

  • Seven days is six nights, with five full days in the middle. That fits four big days out and a full beach day, with a short activity on the last morning.
  • Never put two long days together. Chichén Itzá (about 12 hours) and the Tulum, turtles and cenote combo (8 to 10 hours, and one recent guest was out for 13) sit on days 4 and 6, with shorter days around them.
  • Rio Secreto, the underground river south of Cancún, is the plan's land-based adventure: $89 per person on our check with lunch, lockers and towels, and departures from 7:30 am to noon.
  • For two people, a mid-range hotel, five tours and an airport transfer came to about $2,344 in May and $2,734 in February on our November 4, 2026 checks, before flights and meals.

7 Days in Cancún: The Plan at a Glance

⭐ Our 7-day plan: arrive, sail to Isla Mujeres, a full beach day, Chichén Itzá, Rio Secreto, Tulum with turtles and a cenote, and a speedboat morning before you fly. Two long days, never back to back, a free beach day where you need it, and free time on five of the seven days.

7 days in Cancún is enough to see the region rather than just the Hotel Zone. You can do both major ruins, Chichén Itzá and Tulum, an island, an underground river and still have a day with nothing booked. The skill is in the order: after every long day comes a short one, and the beach day falls straight after the first sea day, before the ruins.

DayPlanStart and lengthPrice per person

Day 7Jungle tour: drive a speedboat, then a last look at Playa Caracol before the airportHourly from 8 am, 2.5 hours$69 + about $20 dock fee

Prices are what we found on November 4, 2026 for two adults travelling in February and July 2027; they were the same in both months. For the planning rules behind this plan, see our Cancún itinerary guide.

7 Days in Cancún, Day by Day

Day 1: Arrive and Settle In

Allow up to 90 minutes for immigration and bags, then 20 to 30 minutes to the Hotel Zone. A private round-trip transfer was $47 per person on our check; see our airport transfer guide.

Day 2: Sail to Isla Mujeres

Cancun Adventures' Isla Mujeres luxury sailing leaves from Puerto Morelos at 8:30 am, 11:30 am or 2:30 pm for about five and a half hours, with an open bar, a light lunch, snorkelling when the sea allows and free time on the island. It was $55 per person, plus $20 for hotel transport and a dock fee. Starting the week with the sea leaves time to move it if a windy day comes. Our Isla Mujeres guide covers the island.

Day 3: A Real Beach Day

No tour, no cost. Take the R1 bus south early to Playa Delfines, the big free public beach at Km 18 with the CANCÚN sign, free palapas and lifeguards from 9 am; it faces east, so you catch the morning light and miss the queue at the sign. The surf is strong, so swim only where the lifeguards say. Walk or ride north to Playa Ballenas, a quiet open-sea beach at Km 14.5 reached by an easy-to-miss path between Hard Rock and Secrets The Vine, then finish the afternoon in the calm, shallow water of Playa Langosta at Km 5. Our guide to Cancún's beaches compares them all.

Day 4: Chichén Itzá

The most-reviewed tour, from Sat Mexico Tours, leaves at 6:30 am for about 12 hours, with Cenote Saamal, a buffet lunch and Valladolid. It was $49 per person, plus the site entrance of about $43 per adult unless you book its all-inclusive option. Our Chichén Itzá tour guide compares the options.

Day 5: Rio Secreto

Rio Secreto, an underground river and cave system south of Playa del Carmen, is a half day with a wetsuit, helmet and water shoes provided, plus lunch, lockers and towels. Cancun Vacation Experts' tour was from $89 per person, with departures from 7:30 am to noon; hotel pickup is an option that costs more. Recent guests loved it, though one weaker swimmer found parts hard going and the walking slippery. See our Rio Secreto guide. A morning start leaves a free afternoon: Playa Tortugas, at Km 6.5, has calm water and the pier for the Isla Mujeres ferry, and the evening is free for Parque de las Palapas and Mercado 28 downtown by R1 bus.

Day 6: Tulum, Turtles and a Cenote

Ocean Tours Mexico's Tulum combo, rated 4.8 from 4,341 reviews, covers the Tulum ruins, snorkelling with turtles, a cenote and a Mayan ceremony, with a taco lunch. It was $129 per person, plus the marine conservation and Tulum National Park fees. It is listed at 8 to 10 hours, but one October 2026 guest was out for 13 with traffic and hotel stops, so keep the evening free. Its 30 most recent Viator reviews averaged 4.9.

Day 7: Drive a Speedboat Before You Fly

The jungle tour from Puerto Maya runs hourly from 8 am for about two and a half hours from the Hotel Zone: drive your own two-seat speedboat through the mangroves and snorkel a reef. It was $69 per person plus about $20 cash for the dock and marine park fee. An early slot gets you back for an afternoon flight, with time for a last free swim at Playa Caracol, the small, calm beach at Punta Cancún.

Free Things to Do in 7 Days in Cancún

A week has room for a whole free day and free time on most of the others. Here is where the plan above leaves it, and what to do with it.

WhenFree thingWhereWhy it fits
Day 1 afternoonYour hotel beach or Playa CaracolKm 9, Punta CancúnCalm water close to the restaurants
Day 3, all dayPlaya Delfines, Playa Ballenas and Playa LangostaKm 18, Km 14.5 and Km 5A free beach-hop by R1 bus: the sign and the view, a quiet beach, then calm water

Day 5 eveningParque de las Palapas and Mercado 28Downtown, at the end of the R1 bus lineThe local side of Cancún after a half-day tour

Every beach here is public and free to use; you pay only for loungers or drinks at beach clubs. The R1 and R2 buses run the length of the Hotel Zone and into downtown for about 12 pesos, cash to the driver. Our best beaches in Cancún guide compares the sand, swimming and sargassum at each one, and our guide to things to do in Cancún without a car covers more free sights.

Swaps for a Week in Cancún

SwapWhen it makes sensePrice on our check
Whale sharks for day 2June to September only; 6:00 am pickup, 6 to 10 hours$199 per person
Isla Contoy and Isla Mujeres for day 2Year-round; the protected island has a daily visitor cap, so book early$179 + $20 conservation fee
Turtle and cenote snorkel for day 5If you would rather swim than go underground; skip the Tulum combo's turtles then$99 + $20 fee
Cooking class for day 7If your flight is mid-afternoon and you prefer a calm morning$79

From December to February a norte can cancel boat trips for a day or two; with seven days, swap the beach day and a boat day around. In spring and summer, check our Cancún sargassum guide before you go.

Where to Stay for 7 Days in Cancún

For a week, the Hotel Zone is still the easiest base: every tour here picks up there or nearby. With three days heading south, to Puerto Morelos, Rio Secreto and Tulum, the southern half of the strip saves a little time each way. Six nights is long enough that an all-inclusive pays off if you eat at the hotel; our best all-inclusive resorts in Cancún and family all-inclusives guides compare them.

Book the Tours for 7 Days in Cancún

All of these could be booked for February and July 2027 dates on our November 4, 2026 check, except the whale shark tour, which runs only in season. The Tulum combo is our pick for a week because it adds the coast's second great ruin site, plus turtles and a cenote, in one day, and its recent reviews are the strongest of the long tours we checked.

How Much Does a Week in Cancún Cost?

For two adults, before flights, meals outside an all-inclusive, tips and the taxes and fees added at hotel checkout. The range runs from the cheapest month to the most expensive in our sample.

StyleHotel, 6 nightsTours and transfer for twoTotal for two
Budget hotel$642 to $840$1,042$1,684 to $1,882
Mid-range hotel$1,302 to $1,692$1,042$2,344 to $2,734
All-inclusive resort$2,412 to $3,756$1,042$3,454 to $4,798, meals included

The beach day and the free afternoons add $0 apart from bus fares of about 12 pesos a ride. What goes into it: the private airport transfer ($94 for two), the Isla Mujeres sailing with transport ($150, plus the dock fee), Chichén Itzá with the entrance ($184), Rio Secreto ($178), the Tulum combo ($258, plus park and conservation fees) and the jungle tour with its dock fee ($178). Hotel figures are per-night rates for two: the budget row is the cheapest quarter of the 42 well-rated hotels we priced, $107 to $140 a night; mid-range is their median, $217 in May to $282 in February; all-inclusive is the median of 10 resorts, $402 in September to $626 in February.

Is a Week in Cancún Too Long?

Not if you plan it like this. A week covers both major ruins, an island, the cenotes and an underground river with a full beach day and no back-to-back long days. If you would rather spend more of it on the sand, drop Rio Secreto or the jungle tour; our 5 days in Cancún plan shows the shorter version.

  • Don't book Chichén Itzá and the Tulum combo on consecutive days; together they are over 20 hours, mostly on the road.
  • Don't leave the beach day to the end; put it where you need the rest.
  • Do book Isla Contoy or whale sharks as soon as your dates are set if you want them; both sell out.

Our Take

A week is where Cancún stops feeling like a resort strip and starts feeling like a region. The trap is filling every day because you can. The plan above has two long days and a full day off for a reason: it is the beach day on day 3, not the tours, that people remember feeling good on.

Tips for a Week in Cancún

  • Book the long tours first (Chichén Itzá, Tulum, and Isla Contoy or whale sharks if you want them), then fit the rest around them.
  • Carry pesos for the entrance, dock, park and conservation fees.
  • Pack reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes and a change of clothes for the cenote and river days.
  • Planning a shorter trip? Our 3-day, 4-day and 5-day Cancún itineraries use the same approach, and our best things to do in Cancún guide covers every activity.
  • Basing yourself further south? Our 7 days in Tulum itinerary does the same length from Tulum, with the ruins, cenotes and free public beaches close by.

How We Built This Itinerary

We built this plan around real start times and durations rather than ideal ones. On November 4, 2026 we checked live availability and prices on Viator for two adults on February 10 and July 14, 2027 for each tour in the plan and its swaps, and read each tour's 30 most recent Viator reviews; tours whose recent reviews had slipped, such as the all-inclusive Isla Mujeres catamaran, were left out. The Rio Secreto price is the cheapest option, without hotel pickup. Hotel costs come from our hotel partner's rates for the same 42 Cancún hotels, rated at least 8 out of 10 from at least 500 reviews, for a four-night stay for two starting in the middle of each month from November 2026 to October 2027, pulled the same day, before the taxes and fees added at checkout. The all-inclusive figures are the median of the 10 all-inclusive resorts that quoted every month. Prices change; always confirm with the operator or hotel before booking. We have not taken these tours ourselves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a week too long in Cancún?+

Not if you plan it. Seven days, or six nights, fits Isla Mujeres, Chichén Itzá, Rio Secreto, Tulum and a full beach day with no two long days in a row, and still leaves the last morning free for a short activity before your flight.

What should I do with 7 days in Cancún?+

Arrive on day 1, sail to Isla Mujeres on day 2, take a beach day on day 3, visit Chichén Itzá on day 4, explore Rio Secreto on day 5, do the Tulum, turtles and cenote combo on day 6, and drive a speedboat on the jungle tour before your flight on day 7.

How much does a week in Cancún cost?+

For two people, a mid-range hotel for six nights, an airport transfer and five tours came to about $2,344 to $2,734 on our November 4, 2026 checks, depending on the month, before flights and meals. With an all-inclusive resort it was about $3,454 to $4,798 with meals included.

Can you do Chichén Itzá and Tulum in the same week?+

Yes, but not on consecutive days. Chichén Itzá takes about 12 hours and the Tulum combo 8 to 10, so put a shorter day, such as Rio Secreto, between them.

What is the best month for a week in Cancún?+

For price, May had the lowest median hotel rate in our sample, $217 a night for two, and September the lowest all-inclusive median. For whale sharks, go between June and September. For the driest weather, December to April, when prices are highest.
